The submarine channel-fill system of the Cambrian Spurs Formation exhibits unique metre-scale cycles of breccia and diamictite. The studied sections, Eureka Spurs, are located at the Mariner Glacier in the central-eastern part of northern Victoria Land, Antarctica. A facies analysis of the channel-fill deposit has led to the recognition of four main lithofacies: breccia, diamictite, thin-bedded sandstone and mudstone. The channel-fill deposit consists of two architectural elements: hollow-fill (HF) and sheet-like (SL) elements. The SL has wide convex-up geometry and consists solely of a very thick bed of diamictite, and is interpreted as a submarine channel lobe. The HF has a concave-up erosional base and flat upper surface. The HF consists of nine cyclic alternations of underlying breccia (cohesionless debris flow) and overlying diamictite (cohesive debris flow). The deposition of breccia is interpreted to have been controlled by repeated allogenic processes such as earthquakes. In contrast, the abrupt vertical transition from breccia to diamictite in each cycle is interpreted to have resulted from an autogenic, slope instability-related process. The interaction of the allogenic and autogenic factors recorded in the metre-scale unique cyclic deposits provides new criteria to interpret cycles of submarine debris flow.

A life-threatening cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)-related injury can cause recurrent arrest after return of circulation. Such injuries are difficult to identify during resuscitation, and their contribution to failed resuscitation can be missed given the limitations of conventional CPR. Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR), increasingly being considered for selected patients with potentially reversible etiology of arrest, may identify previously occult CPR-related injuries by restoring arterial pressure and flow. Herein, we describe two cases of severe CPR-related injuries contributing to recurrent arrest. Each case had ECPR implemented within 60 minutes of the start of CPR. After the presumed cardiac etiology had been addressed with percutaneous coronary intervention, life-threatening cardiovascular injuries with recurrent arrest were noted, and resuscitative thoracotomy was performed under ECPR. One patient survived to hospital discharge.

ECPR may provide an opportunity to identify and correct severe resuscitation-related injuries causing recurrent arrest. Chest compression depth >6 cm, especially in older women, may contribute to these injuries.

The Sewol ferry disaster is one of the most tragic events in Korea’s modern history. Among the 476 people on board, which included Danwon High School students (324) and teachers (14), 304 passengers died in the disaster (295 recovered corpses and 9 missing) and 172 survived. Of the rescued survivors, 72 were attending Danwon High School, located in Ansan City, and residing in a residence nearby. Because the students were young, emotionally susceptible adolescents, both the government and the parents requested the students be grouped together at a single hospital capable of appropriate psychiatric care. Korea University Ansan Hospital was the logical choice, as the only third-tier university-grade hospital with the necessary faculty and facilities within the residential area of the families of the students. We report the experiences and the lessons learned from the processes of preparing for and managing the surviving young students as a community-based hospital. We previously demonstrated that the chronic consumption of a high-fat diet (HFD) promotes lung and liver metastases of 4T1 mammary carcinoma cells in obesity-resistant BALB/c mice. To examine early transcriptional responses to tumour progression in the liver and lungs of HFD-fed mice, 4-week-old female BALB/c mice were divided into four groups: sham-injected, control diet (CD)-fed; sham-injected, HFD-fed (SH); 4T1 cell-injected, CD-fed (TC); 4T1 cell-injected, HFD-fed (TH). Following 16 weeks of either a CD or HFD, 4T1 cells were injected into the mammary fat pads of mice in the TC and TH groups and all mice were continuously fed identical diets. At 14 d post-injection, RNA was isolated from hepatic and pulmonary tissues for microarray analysis of mRNA expression. Functional annotation and core network analyses were conducted for the TH/SH Unique gene set. Inflammation in hepatic tissues and cell mitosis in pulmonary tissues were the most significant biological functions in the TH/SH Unique gene set. The biological core networks of the hepatic TH/SH Unique gene set were characterised as those genes involved in the activation of acute inflammatory responses (Orm1, Lbp, Hp and Cfb), disordered lipid metabolism and deregulated cell cycle progression. Networks of the pulmonary Unique gene set displayed the deregulation of cell cycle progression (Cdc20, Cdk1 and Bub1b). These HFD-influenced alterations may have led to favourable conditions for the formation of both pro-inflammatory and pro-mitotic microenvironments in the target organs that promote immune cell infiltration and differentiation, as well as the infiltration and proliferation of metastatic tumour cells.

Self-sensing and interfacial evaluation were investigated with different dispersion solvents for single carbon fiber/carbon nanotube (CNT)-epoxy composites by electro-micromechanical technique and acoustic emission (AE) under loading/subsequent unloading. Optimized dispersion procedure was set up to obtain improved mechanical and electrical properties. Apparent modulus and electrical contact resistivity for CNT-epoxy composites were correlated with different dispersion solvents for CNT. CNT-epoxy composites using good dispersion solvent showed higher apparent modulus because of better stress transferring effect due to relatively uniform dispersion of CNT in epoxy and enhanced interfacial adhesion between CNT and epoxy matrix. However, good solvent showed high apparent modulus but low thermodynamic work of adhesion, Wa for single carbon microfiber/CNT-epoxy composite. It is because hydrophobic high advanced contact angle was shown in good solvent, which can not be compatible with carbon microfiber well. Damage sensing was also detected simultaneously by AE combined with electrical resistance measurement. Electrical resistivity increased stepwise with progressing fiber fracture due to the maintaining numerous electrical contact by CNT.

We propose a pre-electrical bias aging to reduce threshold voltage (Vth) shift of hydrogenated- amorphous silicon thin-film transistor (a-Si:H TFT) for AMOLED display. The quantity of Vth shift in the sample subjected to a bias-aging is reduced due to the reduction of created dangling bond density, compared with a sample without a bias-aging. When an identical stress duration of 50,000 sec is applied to a-Si:H TFT with or without a pre-electrical bias-aging, the created dangling bond density (ΔNDB) after a pre-electrical bias-aging is decreased from 1.38 × 1011/cm2 to 0.685 × 1011/cm2. Our experimental results indicate that after the pre-electrical bias aging, a newly created dangling bond during an electrical stress is decreased because a weak bond density and hydrogen diffusion may be decreased.

Assessment of nuclear status is important when a biopsied single blastomere is used for embryo sexing. In this study we investigated the nuclear status of blastomeres derived from 8- to 16-cell stage in vitro fertilised bovine embryos to determine the representativeness of a single blastomere for embryo sexing. In 24 embryos analysed, the agreement in sex determination between a biopsied single blastomere and a matched blastocyst by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was 83.3%. To clarify the discrepancies, karyotypes of blastomeres in 8- to 16-cell stage bovine embryos were analysed. We applied vinblastine sulfate at various concentrations and for different exposure times for metaphase plate induction in 8- to 16-cell stage bovine embryos. The 1.0 mg/ml vinblastine sulfate treatment for 15 h was selected as the most effective condition for induction of a metaphase plate (>45%). Among 22 embryos under these conditions, only 8 of 10 that had a normal diploid chromosome complement showed a sex chromosomal composition of XX or XY (36.4%) and 2 diploid embryos showed mosaicism of the opposite sex of XX and XY in blastomeres of the embryo (9.1%). One haploid embryo contained only one X-chromosome (4.5%). Four of another 11 embryos with a mixoploid chromosomal complement contained a haploid blastomere with a wrong sex chromosome (18.2%). In conclusion, assessment of nuclear status of 8- to 16-cell stage bovine embryos revealed that morphologically normal embryos had a considerable proportion of mixoploid blastomeres and sex chromosomal mosaicism; these could be the cause of discrepancies in the sex between biopsied single blastomeres and matched blastocysts by PCR.

For a diffusion barrier against Cu, tantalum nitride (TaN) films have been successfully deposited by both conventional thermal atomic layer deposition (ALD) and plasma assisted atomic layer deposition (PAALD), using pentakis (ethylmethlyamino) tantalum (PEMAT) and ammonia (NH3) as precursors. The growth rate of PAALD TaN at substrate temperature 250° was slightly higher than that of ALD TaN (0.80 Å/cycle for PAALD and 0.75 Å/cycle for ALD). Density of TaN films deposited by PAALD was as high as 11.0 g/cm3, considerably higher compared to the value of 8.3 g/cm3 obtained by ALD. The N: Ta ratio for ALD TaN was 44: 37 in composition and the film contained approximately 8∼10 atomic % carbon and 11 atomic % oxygen impurities. On the other hand, the ratio for PAALD TaN layers was 47: 44 and the respective carbon and oxygen contents of TaN layers decreased to 3 atomic % and 4 atomic %. The stability of 10 nm-thick TaN films as a Cu diffusion barrier was tested through thermal annealing for 30 minutes in N2 ambient and characterized by XRD, which proves the PAALD deposited TaN film to maintain better barrier properties against Cu below 800°.

An alkoxyphenyl substitutued new polyfluorene derivative, poly(9,9-bis(4'-n-octyloxyphenyl) fluorene) (PBOPF) was synthesized through Ni(0) mediated polymerization. Blue light-emitting PBOPF shows peak PL at 426 nm. No significant excimer emission was observed even after annealing the polymer film at 100 oC for 2h. Aseries of random copolymers of 2,7-dibromo-9,9-bis(4'-n-octyloxyphenyl)) fluorene (BOPF) and 2,7-dibromo-N-(2'-ethylhexyl)carbazole (EHC) were also synthesized through Ni(0) mediated polymerization. Carbazole comonomer was introduced to improve hole-transporting properties of PBOPF. The synthesized poly(BOPF-co-EHC)s showed similar UV-visible absorption and PL emission to PBOPF. EL devices were fabricated in an ITO/PEDOT/polymer/Ca/Al configuration. The EL devices using copolymers showed improved device performance than the device using PBOPF homopolymer due to a more balanced charge transport.

RF MEMS(Micro-Electro-Mechanical-System) switch technology is one of powerful solution for future RF systems. This technology provides low insertion loss, High linearity and broad bandwidth. Wide driving membrane used MEMS switch can reduce driving voltage but it is easy to bend because of the stress gradient. In order to solve this problem we fabricated Au cantilever in various sputtering condition and various substrate materials. As a result of this experiment, we fabricated cantilever which was bent within 1 um, with 2 um thickness and 340 um length. We applied this condition to RF MEMS switch and we fabricated switch membrane within 1 um bend, under 10MPa stress gradient.

For the metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) of copper, (hfac)Cu(VTMS) (hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate, VTMS = vinyltrimethylsilane) and (hfac)Cu(ATMS) (ATMS = allyltrimethylsilane) were compared, and the effect of L ligand in (hfac)Cu–L was examined. It was found by 1H-NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) that the thermal stability of (hfac)Cu(VTMS) was better than that of (hfac)Cu(ATMS) due to the relatively weak Cu–ATMS bond. From in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) experiments, the formation of Cu(hfac)2, the product of disproportion reaction of Cu(hfac), was observed in the gas phase and (hfac)Cu(ATMS) was found to be more reactive to form Cu(hfac)2. The minimum temperature for the deposition of copper films from (hfac)Cu(ATMS) was as low as 60 °C, which was about 70 °C lower than from (hfac)Cu(VTMS). The grain size of the film deposited with (hfac)Cu(ATMS) was substantially larger than that with (hfac)Cu(VTMS), which showed that the chemical reactivity of the precursor had an influence on the microstructure along with the deposition temperature.

The effect of a post plasma treatment on the dielectric properties and reliability of fluorine doped silicon oxide (SiOF) films deposited by electron cyclotron resonance chemical vapor deposition (ECRCVD) was studied. Also, the thermal stability of an electrodeposited Cu / sputtered Ta interconnect system with SiOF intermetal dielectrics was examined by annealing in a vacuum furnace. The stability of the dielectric constant of SiOF films was improved by O2 post plasma treatment. Surface modification by the plasma treatment was effective in prevention of water absorption. The Cu/Ta/SiOF/Si system was thermally stable at least up to 500°C for 3h. For the Cu/Ta/SiOF/Si multilayer structure, the plasma treatment seemed to play a big role in suppressing the interdiffusion between SiOF and metal interconnects. By C-V measurement, the electrical stability of the Cu/Ta/SiOF/Si multilayer structure was found to be stable up to 500°C for 2 h.

The effect of the post plasma treatment on the dielectric properties and reliability of fluorine doped silicon oxide (SiOF) films was studied. Also, the thermal stability of a Cu/WN interconnect system with SiOF intermetal dielectrics was examined by RTA. The surface roughness of SiOF films increased with the increasing plasma treatment power due to ion bombardment effect during the plasma treatment. As the plasma treatment power increased, the dielectric constant increased from 3.16 to 3.43, while the change in the relative dielectric constant of the plasma treated films by the boiling treatment was decreased in magnitude. Furthermore, the chemical properties of the plasma treated SiOF films near the top layer tend to resemble those of thermal oxides by the plasma treatment of sufficient power because of the reduction in the Si-F bonding in the films. In the case of Cu/WN/SiOF/Si multilayer structure, surface oxidation and densification due to the plasma treatment seemed to play an important role in protecting the interdiffusion between SiOF and metal interconnects.
