A controversy at the 2016 IUCN World Conservation Congress on the topic of closing domestic ivory markets (the 007, or so-called James Bond, motion) has given rise to a debate on IUCN's value proposition. A cross-section of authors who are engaged in IUCN but not employed by the organization, and with diverse perspectives and opinions, here argue for the importance of safeguarding and strengthening the unique technical and convening roles of IUCN, providing examples of what has and has not worked. Recommendations for protecting and enhancing IUCN's contribution to global conservation debates and policy formulation are given.

A general circulation model (GCM) of the ocean is used to study the effects of changes in the monsoon winds of present day and 9000 yr B.P. on the upwelling in the Arabian Sea. The vertical transport from the ocean GCM is used as a measure of upwelling strength to assess the relative abundance of Globigerina bulloides at present and 9000 yr B.P., during the climatic optimum. The high abundance of G. bulloides at 9000 yr B.P. is probably a result of a doubling of the vertical transport at that time.

Background. Anxious depression, defined as Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) with high levels of anxiety symptoms, may represent a relatively common depressive subtype, with distinctive features.

Objective. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of anxious depression and to define its clinical correlates and symptom patterns.

Method. Baseline clinical and sociodemographic data were collected on 1450 subjects participating in the STAR*D study. A baseline Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D) Anxiety/Somatization factor score of [ges ]7 was considered indicative of anxious depression. The types and degree of concurrent psychiatric symptoms were measured using the Psychiatric Diagnostic Screening Questionnaire (PDSQ), by recording the number of items endorsed by study participants for each diagnostic category. MDD symptoms were assessed by clinical telephone interview with the 30-item Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (IDS-C30).

Results. The prevalence of anxious depression in this population was 46%. Patients with anxious MDD were significantly more likely to be older, unemployed, less educated, more severely depressed, and to have suicidal ideation before and after adjustment for severity of depression. As far as concurrent psychiatric symptoms are concerned, patients with anxious depression were significantly more likely to endorse symptoms related to generalized anxiety, obsessive compulsive, panic, post-traumatic stress, agoraphobia, hypochondriasis, and somatoform disorders before and after adjustment for severity of depression. Anxious-depression individuals were also significantly less likely to endorse IDS-C30 items concerning atypical features, and were significantly more likely to endorse items concerning melancholic/endogenous depression features.

Conclusion. This study supports specific clinical and sociodemographic correlates of MDD associated with high levels of anxiety (anxious depression).

The Tiebout model, which theorizes that residential choice can regulate the supply of local collective goods, has generated much criticism, but few empirical tests of its behavioural assumptions. The article presents the findings of the first British micro-level test of the effect of local taxes and services on geographical mobility, a postal survey of households' moving decisions in four London boroughs during the years of the poll tax. Taxes and services are found to be important factors in the moving decision, corroborating the behavioural assumptions of the model. Respondents acted Tiebout-rationally as those moving into low tax/good service quality boroughs are more likely to cite low taxes and good services as a moving factor than those doing the reverse. The policy implications, however, remain contingent on political orientation.

The Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (ZSDS) correlated well (0·69) with the treating physician's global rating in 26 depressed out-patients during the six weeks of treatment with a tricyclic antidepressant. In a larger sample of 41 patients, a high correlation was found between the ZSDS and the Hamilton Rating Scale. The sensitivity of the ZSDS was found to be adequate. The scale was able to differentiate, at the 0·05 level, four severity groups classified on the basis of the global rating. The importance of the direct relationship between the range of severity studied and the value of the correlation coefficient was discussed. Previous investigations and the results of this study indicate that the ZSDS is a valid and sensitive measure of clinical severity in depressed patients and support its continued use as a research instrument.

Nortriptyline plasma levels and the incidence and severity of the common subjective side effects of the tricyclic antidepressants were determined in 26 patients during six weeks of treatment with nortriptyline. The total corrected (treatment minus pre-treatment) score of the eight side effects most independent of the severity of depression correlated (0 · 60) with the nortriptyline plasma level. Increased perspiration (o · 59) and dry mouth (o · 54) were the individual corrected side effects which most consistently correlated with the plasma level. These subjective side effects may serve as clinically useful guides to dosage adjustments during treatment, though their value is limited by the magnitude of the correlations and the need to correct for their presence prior to treatment.

Plasma levels of amitriptyline and nortriptyline were similar in ten depressed patients after administration of amitriptyline hydrochloride in three divided doses or as a single daily dose. Maximum comparability of the plasma levels is achieved by sampling 12 to 16 hours after the single daily dose, or 3 to 7 hours after the morning dose on a thrice-daily schedule. Owing to the long biological half-life of these drugs, therapeutic plasma levels are maintained on a once a day dosage schedule, and the need for sustained release preparations appears questionable.
