During an electron microscope study of the weathering of granite from southern New South Wales, Australia, an assemblage of minerals including florencite and rhabdophane was discovered replacing apatite. Light rare earth elements released from allanite early in weathering apparently combined with P released by leaching of primary apatite to form secondary phases exhibiting a range of morphologies and compositions. Chondrite normalized fractionation patterns La > Nd > Sm > Ce; La > Ce > Nd ≥ Sm and La = Sm = Nd > Ce were identified. The rare earth elements were present in very small crystals and aggregates of secondary minerals (< 10 μm) and coexisted with clays and secondary Fe-Ti oxides. The weathered granite was enriched about 6 to 10 times in all rare earth elements except Ce relative to fresh granite if the abundances were corrected for apparent enrichment due to reduction in density. The rare earth elements were probably derived from higher in the weathering profile, possibly by destruction of florencite and rhabdophane in very intensively weathered rock. Ce remained relatively immobile during weathering, probably due to its oxidation to Ce4+.

Transmission electron microscopy suggests that biotite transforms to vermiculite primarily by direct structural modification, involving the replacement of K+ by hydrated interlayer cations, and only minor reorganization of the 2:1 layer. A second relatively uncommon mechanism appears to involve redistribution of components from two biotite sheets to form a single vermiculite layer. Distortion of the surrounding structure initially inhibits growth of vermiculite in the surrounding biotite, and promotes the propagation of vermiculite layers in opposite directions. This phenomenon may contribute to the development of relatively regular, widely spaced interstratifications of biotite and vermiculite. Additional components and space are provided by the dissolution of biotite where access of solutions is greater.

During weathering, biotite and vermiculite become increasingly replaced by kaolinite, which crystallizes epitactically onto existing layers, and goethite, which develops from a poorly crystalline iron oxyhydroxide precursor to form oriented laths. In areas parts of strongly weathered samples kaolinite and goethite appear to develop in proportions consistent with a reaction that conserves both Al and Fe.

Analytical and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy of weathered plagioclase and K-feldspar provided microtextural and chemical data that suggest a sequential formation of weathering products. An alteration layer < 1 µm thick on feldspar surfaces had short-range order and was termed protocrystalline. Relative to the parent feldspars the protocrystalline layer was depleted in Ca, Na, K, and Si and significantly enriched in Fe. On plagioclase, the protocrystalline material was replaced by Ca-Fe-K-smectite, another protocrystalline material, and spherical halloysite. Abundant tubular halloysite on the corroded surface apparently formed by reprecipitation of components released by plagioclase dissolution. The K-feldspar was markedly more resistant to weathering than the plagioclase.

Recrystallization of the patchily developed protocrystalline rind produced Fe-bearing, aluminous smecrite, which was ultimately replaced by spherical halloysite and laths of kaolinite. Muscovite laths within plagioclase crystals were converted initially to illite by loss of K, then to randomly interstratified illite/smectite, and then to smectite that contained Mg, little K and Fe, and was more aluminous and contained less Ca than the smectite that originally replaced the plagioclase. Smectite was replaced epitactically by kaolinite. Kaolinite was the stable weathering product of the feldspars and muscovite in the profiles. It probably formed in equilibrium with a solution whose composition was no longer controlled by the microenvironment within the feldspar, but approached that of meteoric water.

The structure, chemistry and distribution of hydrothermal alteration and weathering products of feldspars and glass in 3 samples of Yucca Mountain tuffs (GSW G4 borehole at a depth of 1531 ft (464 m) and USW GU3 borehole at 1406 ft (426 m) from the Calico Hills Formation and USW G4 at a depth of 272 ft (82.4 m) from the Topobah Springs Member) were examined by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and analytical electron microscopy (AEM). Alteration products are of interest because they may influence the form and distribution of contaminants released from the proposed high-level nuclear waste repository. Samples from the Calico Hills Formation contain alkali-bearing aluminosilicate glass and its alteration products. Zeolites appear to have formed from compositionally similar glass by recrystallization, probably under hydrothermal conditions. Crystals are fibrous and frequently no more than a few tens of nanometers in diameter. Porous aggregates of few-nanometer-diameter, poorly crystalline silica spheres (probably opal C-T) develop adjacent to corroded glass surfaces and zeolite crystals. Finely crystalline Fe-rich smectites coat etched glass surfaces, zeolites and feldspar crystals and occur within opal-like silica aggregates. Microstructures in the clay-dominated coatings and details of smectite-glass interfaces suggest that clays grow in orientations controlled by heterogeneously retreating surfaces and from constituents released at associated glass dissolution sites. The alteration assemblage also includes finely crystalline hematite, goethite, Mn-oxide films and illite formed by alteration of muscovite. The zeolitized sample contains abundant opal-like silica whereas glass in the unzeolitized sample is weathered to smectite-like clays. These differences may be attributed to hydrological and consequent geochemical factors resulting from the higher porosity of zeolitized samples. Exsolved alkali feldspar, which occurs as micron-sized crystals in the Calico Hills Formation and as phenocrysts and in the groundmass of the devitrified Topobah Springs Member, are almost unaltered. Feldspar alteration is confined to cracks and grain boundaries, where minor, poorly crystalline, Fe-bearing aluminosilicate alteration products are developed. In these tuffs, most of the porosity, permeability, high surface area and capacity to affect solution chemistry are associated with products of glass alteration.

Clay swelling, an important phenomenon in natural systems, can dramatically affect the properties of soils and sediments. Of particular interest in low-salinity, saturated systems are osmotic hydrates, forms of smectite in which the layer separation greatly exceeds the thickness of a single smectite layer due to the intercalation of water. In situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies have shown a strong link between ionic strength and average interlayer spacing in osmotic hydrates but also indicate the presence of structural disorder that has not been fully described. In the present study the structural state of expanded smectite in sodium chloride solutions was investigated by combining very low electron dose, high-resolution cryogenic-transmission electron microscopy observations with XRD experiments. Wyoming smectite (SWy-2) was embedded in vitreous ice to evaluate clay structure in aqua. Lattice-fringe images showed that smectite equilibrated in aqueous, low-ionic-strength solutions, exists as individual smectite layers, osmotic hydrates composed of parallel layers, as well as disordered layer conformations. No evidence was found here for edge-to-sheet attractions, but significant variability in interlayer spacing was observed. Whether this variation could be explained by a dependence of the magnitude of long-range cohesive (van der Waals) forces on the number of layers in a smectite particle was investigated here. Calculations of the Hamaker constant for layer-layer interactions showed that van der Waals forces may span at least five layers plus the intervening water and confirmed that forces vary with layer number. Drying of the disordered osmotic hydrates induced re-aggregation of the smectite to form particles that exhibited coherent scattering domains. Clay disaggregation and restacking may be considered as an example of oriented attachment, with the unusual distinction that it may be cycled repeatedly by changing solution conditions.

Rare earth elements (REEs, ‘lanthanides’) constitute a vital commodity for technological applications. Although these elements occur at trace levels in many minerals, they can comprise major constituents of low abundance phosphate, carbonate, silicate and oxide minerals, some of which form during granite weathering. REE-phosphate phases can be a source of phosphorus for essential biomolecules and certain REEs are required by some bacterial enzymes involved in the oxidation of methanol, an important compound in the global biogeochemical carbon cycle. The mechanisms that promote the dissolution of lanthanide phosphate minerals are largely unknown, but probably vary with the lanthanide phosphate mineralogy of weathered rock and soil. Here, we studied weathering of five I-type, three S-type and one A-type granite to determine the extent of weathering of primary REE- and/or P-bearing minerals apatite, allanite and monazite, and the formation of secondary REE/P-bearing minerals. We found evidence for greater mobilisation of REE and P in weathered I-type and A-type granites than in S-types, reflecting the higher solubility of apatite and allanite relative to monazite. Although monazite persisted in highly weathered S-type granites, some alteration was detected. Secondary REE/P-bearing minerals were not detected in two S-type profiles, while spherical secondary REE/P-bearing mineral aggregates were abundant throughout the third S-type profile. Secondary euhedral REE/P-bearing crystals were abundant even in the slightly weathered I-type and A-type granite material, yet they were not detected in the highly weathered material, indicating that these minerals had dissolved. Our findings indicate that mineralogy constrains substantially, but does not control completely, lanthanide availability as a function of degree of weathering. These results have implications for predicting REE and phosphate bioavailability in soils derived from granitic rock types and suggest that highly weathered I-type granites may provide inocula for bioleaching experiments.

Ceramics are strong but brittle. According to the classical theories, ceramics are brittle mainly because dislocations are suppressed by cracks. Here, the authors report the combined elastic and plastic deformation measurements of nanoceramics, in which dislocation-mediated stiff and ductile behaviors were detected at room temperature. In the synchrotron-based deformation experiments, a marked slope change is observed in the stress–strain relationship of MgAl2O4 nanoceramics at high pressures, indicating that a deformation mechanism shift occurs in the compression and that the nanoceramics sample is elastically stiffer than its bulk counterpart. The bulk-sized MgAl2O4 shows no texturing at pressures up to 37 GPa, which is compatible with the brittle behaviors of ceramics. Surprisingly, substantial texturing is seen in nanoceramic MgAl2O4 at pressures above 4 GPa. The observed stiffening and texturing indicate that dislocation-mediated mechanisms, usually suppressed in bulk-sized ceramics at low temperature, become operative in nanoceramics. This makes nanoceramics stiff and ductile.

Recent ex situ observations of crystallization in both natural and synthetic systems indicate that the classical models of nucleation and growth are inaccurate. However, in situ observations that can provide direct evidence for alternative models have been lacking due to the limited temporal and spatial resolution of experimental techniques that can observe dynamic processes in a bulk solution. Here we report results from liquid cell transmission electron microscopy studies of nucleation and growth of Au, CaCO3, and iron oxide nanoparticles. We show how these in situ data can be used to obtain direct evidence for the mechanisms underlying nanoparticle crystallization as well as dynamic information that provide constraints on important energetic parameters not available through ex situ methods.

Chromium-doped (0.5-10 % Cr:Ti molar ratio) nanocrystalline titania (5–6 nm) prepared via sol-gel method was examined by synchrotron-based wide angle x-ray scattering (WAXS) for crystal structure determination. Atomic pair-distribution functions (PDF) for both raw and heat-treated samples were obtained by Fourier transforms of the WAXS data. The PDF data were fitted using structural models of nanocrystalline titania that considered phase compositions, lattice parameters, atomic positions and thermal factors. The unit cell of Cr-doped nanocrystalline titania expanded 1-2 % with respect to bulk titania as a consequence of the substitution of Ti by Cr and the generation of oxygen vacancies. We observed a lattice contraction after heat-treatment that may be caused by the redistribution of Cr atoms to nanoparticle surfaces during phase transformation and particle coarsening.

We interpret recent spectral data of Mars collected by the Mars Exploration Rovers to contain substantial evidence of sulfate minerals and aqueous processes. We present visible/near-infrared (VNIR), mid-IR and Mössbauer spectra of several iron sulfate minerals and two acid mine drainage (AMD) samples collected from the Iron Mountain site and compare these combined data with the recent spectra of Mars. We suggest that the sulfates on Mars are produced via aqueous oxidation of sulfides known to be present on Mars from Martian meteorites. The sulfate-rich rock outcrops observed in Meridiani Planum may have formed in an acidic environment similar to AMD environments on Earth. Because microorganisms are typically involved in the oxidation of sulfides to sulfates in terrestrial AMD sites, sulfate-rich rock outcrops on Mars may be a good location to search for evidence of life on that planet. Whether or not life evolved on Mars, following the trail of sulfate minerals is likely to lead to aqueous processes and chemical weathering. Our results imply that sulfate minerals formed in Martian soils via chemical weathering, perhaps over very long time periods, and that sulfate minerals precipitated following aqueous oxidation of sulfides to form the outcrop rocks at Meridiani Planum.

The kinetics of phase transformation of nanocrystalline anatase samples was studied using x-ray diffraction at temperatures ranging from 600 to 1150 °C. Kinetic data were analyzed with an interface nucleation model and a newly proposed kinetic model for combined interface and surface nucleation. Results revealed that the activation energy of nucleation is size dependent. In anatase samples with denser particle packing, rutile nucleates primarily at interfaces between contacting anatase particles. In anatase samples with less dense particle packing, rutile nucleates at both interfaces and free surfaces of anatase particles. The predominant nucleation mode may change from interface nucleation at low temperatures to surface nucleation at intermediate temperatures and to bulk nucleation at very high temperatures. Alumina particles dispersed among the anatase particles can effectively reduce the probability of interface nucleation at all temperatures.

Initial thermodynamic analysis predicts surface tension of fine solid particles decreases with decrease in particle size. Free energy of fine solid particles increases with decrease in particle size. In the nanocrystalline TiO2 system, the surface tensions and the surface energies of both anatase and rutile were estimated by modeling available thermochemical data and kinetic data. The particle size versus temperature phase diagram of the nanocrystalline TiO2 system was calculated, which reveals 1–8 nm anatase is more stable than rutile of the same size at certain temperatures.
