As law graduates wield significant influence in public life, law schools’ responsibility for cultivating students’ civic capacities and dispositions remains an important but often neglected project. Taking up this project, this article traces a thread of deliberative democratic aspirations within legal education scholarship and explores the potential of participation within law schools’ own political processes for realising these ideals. To do so, it examines law students’ experiences of an experiment with deliberative democracy’s leading institutional innovation – the deliberative mini-public – and demonstrates the ways in which participation fostered deliberative capacities, a more collective orientation, and increased confidence. Ultimately, the article illustrates the mutually reinforcing nature of civic and legal education, affirms law schools’ broader role within society and offers both theoretical and practical insights into the place of democratic innovation within the law school.

Despite the notion's prominence, scholarship has yet to offer a viable account of the view that crimes constitute public wrongs. Despite numerous attempts, some scholars are now doubting whether a viable account is forthcoming whereas others are reeling back expectations for what the concept itself can offer. This article vindicates crime's public character while asserting the relevance of political theory in doing so. After critiquing prior attempts and clarifying expectations, the article offers a novel account, relying on both key doctrinal features and a deliberative democratic framework through which to interpret their public significance. In doing so, it demonstrates how this framework explains the public nature of censure, and ultimately argues that crimes are public wrongs not because such actions themselves necessarily wrong or harm the public, but instead because they are the type of wrong that the public has a stake in addressing. This gives rise to an understanding of sentencing as public decision-making within which citizens and their representatives decide how best to use public power to manage public interests.

Clozapine is a prototype atypical antipsychotic drug and displays efficacy in 30% to 60% of schizophrenia patients who do not respond to traditional antipsychotics. There is considerable evidence supporting a concentration-response relationship for clozapine. A plasma clozapine concentration >200 to 420 ng/mL increases the probability of antipsychotic effects. Approximately 70% to 80% of variability in clozapine plasma concentration can be attributed to variability in cytochrome P450 1A2 activity. Measurement of caffeine metabolites in plasma or urine can be used as an in vivo index of cytochrome P450 1A2 activity, since caffeine is primarily eliminated by oxidative metabolism through this cytochrome P450 enzyme. Caffeine-based tests may contribute to individualization of clozapine dosages and optimization of its antipsychotic effects in schizophrenia patieents There are several lines of evidence suggesting the potential involvement of the dopamine D4 receptor in pharmacodynamic effects of clozapine. Clozapine has a 10-fold higher affinity for the dopamine D4 receptor in comparison to the D2 and the D3 receptors. Moreover, the free plasma fluid concentration of clozapine is comparable to its binding affinity for the D4 receptor in vitro. Blockade of the D4 receptor in the mesocorticolimbic region, a brain area implicated in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia, may contribute to efficacy of clozapine in negative symptoms. Moreover, the dopamine D4 receptor gene (DRD4) displays an unusual degree of genetic variation (polymorphism). In a recent preliminary study, investigated the (G)n mononucleotide repeat polymorphism within the first intron of the D4 gene in 50 schizophrenia patients refractory to traditional antipsychotics. These patients were prospectively followed for antipsychotic response during clozapine treatment. Analysis of variance found significant differences in antipsychotic response as demonstrated by mean change in Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale scores among the genotype panels for this polymorphism F[3,49]=4.1 (P=0.01). Future studies investigating the mechanistic basis of variability in response to clozapine should focus on both pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic factors.

Diffusion tensor imaging was used to investigate white matter (WM) integrity in adults with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and healthy adults as controls. Adults with TBI had sustained severe vehicular injuries on the average of 7 years earlier. A multivariate analysis of covariance with verbal IQ as the covariate revealed that adults with TBI had lower fractional anisotropy and higher mean diffusivity than controls, specifically in the three regions of interest (ROIs), the centrum semiovale (CS), the superior frontal (SPF), and the inferior frontal (INF). Adults with TBI averaged in the normal range in motor speed and two of three executive functions and were below average in delayed verbal recall and inhibition, whereas controls were above average. Time since injury, but not age, was associated with WM changes in the SPF ROI, whereas age, but not time since injury, was associated with WM changes in the INF ROI, suggesting that the effects of WM on time since injury may interact with age. To understand the utility of WM changes in chronic recovery, larger sample sizes are needed to investigate associations between cognition and WM integrity of severely injured individuals who have substantial cognitive impairment compared to severely injured individuals with little cognitive impairment. Concordant radiocarbon and aspartic acid racemization dates have been obtained for several Holocene aboriginal skeletons from coastal southern California sites. These results further demonstrate the reliability of racemization dating. One of the skeletons (SDM 16709), dated at 8,300 years, was a burial around which several milling stones had been placed. This well-dated burial indicates that the Southern California Milling Stone horizon is significantly older than has previously been accepted.
