The geographic origin of Antarctic precipitation is important for ice-core isotopic interpretation as well as ice-sheet mass-balance calculations. Here we estimate these moisture origins with the NASA/Goddard Institute of Space Studies atmospheric general circulation model, under different climatic conditions. This model reasonably simulates the broad features of the present-day observed hydrological cycle, and indicates a subtropical to subglacial (30-60° S) latitudinal origin for the Antarctic precipitation. We use different climatic reconstructions, all based on CLIMAP, for the Last Glacial Maximum (about 21000 years ago), which differ by the latitudinal sea-surface temperature gradient and seasonality. CLIMAP conditions increase the latitudinal gradient and the sea-ice extent, with the consequence of slightly enhancing the low-latitude origins. Shifting the seasonal cycle of oceanic prescribed conditions has an important effect on the hydrological cycle but less on the precipitation origin. Prescribing cooler tropical sea-surface temperatures, which decreases the latitudinal gradient, makes the latitudinal contributions closer to modern ones and increases the dominant oceanic sources. Globally the origins of Antarctic precipitation do not change significantly, either annually or seasonally.

To assess the cause/effect relationship between climatic and environmental changes, we report high-resolution chemical profiles of the Dome C ice core (788m, 45 kyr), drilled in the framework of the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA). Snow-concentration and depositional-flux changes during the last deglaciation were compared with climatic changes, derived by δD profile. Concentration and temperature profiles showed an anticorrelation, driven by changes in source intensity and transport efficiency of the atmospheric aerosol and by snow accumulation-rate variations. The flux calculation allowed correction for accumulation rate. While sulphate and ammonium fluxes are quite constant, Na+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ underwent the greatest changes, showing fluxes respectively about two, three and six times lower in the Holocene than in the Last Glacial Maximum. Chloride, nitrate and methanesulphonic acid (MSA) also exhibited large changes, but their persistence depends on depositional and post-depositional effects. The comparison between concentrations and δD profiles revealed leads and lags between chemical and temperature trends: Ca2+ and nitrate preceded by about 300 years the δD increase at the deglaciation onset, while MSA showed a 400 year delay. Generally, all components reached low Holocene values in the first deglaciation step (18.0–14.0 kyr BP), but Na+, Mg2+ and nitrate show changes during the Antarctic Cold Reversal (14.0– 12.5 kyr BP).

The contribution of social sciences to risk assessment has often been confined to dimensions of risk perception and communication. This article relates an effort to promote knowledge from the social sciences that addresses other dimensions of risk issues. A sociological checklist produced for ANSES in France helps to identify and analyse social dimensions that should be given attention during the process of risk assessment.

The Vavilov ice cap was perforated in 1988 by a drilling which reached the underlying frozen sediments. In contrast to the overlying glacier ice, the basal ice is composed of different ice layers with a variable debris load. The stable-isotope composition of these layers shows δ values much lower than everywhere else in the core or in the Vavilov ice cap. This is most probably the signature of a remnant of Pleistocene ice which, for the first time, is shown to occur in the Russian Arctic.

The basal ice layer of surge-type Variegated Glacier, Alaska, appears to have formed by a combination of (i) open-system freezing of subglacial meltwaters over both rigid and unconsolidated substrates; (ii) apron over-riding during surge-induced glacier advance; (iii) incorporation of glacier ice by recumbent folding, thrust-faulting and nappe over-riding during down-glacier propagation of a surge front; and (iv) post-formational metamorphism involving recrystallization, partial internal melting and squeezing out of meltwaters and dissolved gases. Structural evidence and the characteristics of debris entrained in ice facies formed by basal freezing suggest that the layer includes a lower element formed under surge conditions and an upper element formed during the quiescent phase of a surge cycle. The lower element is depleted in comminution products and enriched in medium gravel, while the upper element contains comminution products but virtually no medium gravel. This distinction is attributed to the efficiency of bedrock fracture and meltwater flushing of comminution products under surge conditions. The basal ice layer thickens from <1 m to >13 m down-glacier in a manner consistent with the magnitude of horizontal shortening induced by the 1982–83 surge. Thickening is largely tectonic in origin, and the style and intensity of folding and thrust faulting change down-glacier as the magnitude of horizontal shortening increases. Tectonic processes associated with the down-glacier propagation of surge fronts therefore appear to be capable of creating thick basal ice layers which allow extensive supraglacial sedimentation of subglacially derived debris.

The last interglacial, commonly understood as an interval with climate as warm or warmer than today, is represented by marine isotope stage (MIS) 5e, which is a proxy record of low global ice volume and high sea level. It is arbitrarily dated to begin at approximately 130,000 yr B.P. and end at 116,000 yr B.P. with the onset of the early glacial unit MIS 5d. The age of the stage is determined by correlation to uranium–thorium dates of raised coral reefs. The most detailed proxy record of interglacial climate is found in the Vostok ice core where the temperature reached current levels 132,000 yr ago and continued rising for another two millennia. Approximately 127,000 yr ago the Eemian mixed forests were established in Europe. They developed through a characteristic succession of tree species, probably surviving well into the early glacial stage in southern parts of Europe. After ca. 115,000 yr ago, open vegetation replaced forests in northwestern Europe and the proportion of conifers increased significantly farther south. Air temperature at Vostok dropped sharply. Pulses of cold water affected the northern North Atlantic already in late MIS 5e, but the central North Atlantic remained warm throughout most of MIS 5d. Model results show that the sea surface in the eastern tropical Pacific warmed when the ice grew and sea level dropped. The essentially interglacial conditions in southwestern Europe remained unaffected by ice buildup until late MIS 5d when the forests disappeared abruptly and cold water invaded the central North Atlantic ca. 107,000 yr ago.

The total air content (V) of ice has been measured along the Dome Summit South (DSS) core from Law Dome, East Antarctica. The main features of this record are the very well-preserved sub-annual fluctuations of V (down to at least 900 m depth) and the significant increase of the V values during the last deglaciation. The sub-annual variations reflect changes in close-off porosity, and we interpret the V seasonal peaks as tracers of depth-hoar layers. For the longer time-scale, the large V fluctuations observed are interpreted in terms of elevation and/or close-off porosity changes under different assumptions. We analyze the possible influence of a different global pressure field and/or a change in seasonal temperature and precipitation cycles during the last glacial period. Our estimates of surface elevation changes derived from the V data are then compared with independent reconstructions of past elevations.

A comparison is made of the Holocene records obtained from water isotope measurements along 11 ice cores from coastal and central sites in east Antarctica (Vostok, Dome B, Plateau Remote, Komsomolskaia, Dome C, Taylor Dome, Dominion Range, D47, KM105, and Law Dome) and west Antarctica (Byrd), with temporal resolution from 20 to 50 yr. The long-term trends possibly reflect local ice sheet elevation fluctuations superimposed on common climatic fluctuations. All the records confirm the widespread Antarctic early Holocene optimum between 11,500 and 9000 yr; in the Ross Sea sector, a secondary optimum is identified between 7000 and 5000 yr, whereas all eastern Antarctic sites show a late optimum between 6000 and 3000 yr. Superimposed on the long time trend, all the records exhibit 9 aperiodic millennial-scale oscillations. Climatic optima show a reduced pacing between warm events (typically 800 yr), whereas cooler periods are associated with less-frequent warm events (pacing >1200 yr).

Climatic reconstruction of glacial to interglacial episodes from oxygen isotopes in sediment cores from the Nordic seas is complicated by strong local meltwater contributions to the oxygen isotope changes. Combination of benthic and planktic foraminiferal isotope data with foraminiferal abundances and ice-rafted debris (IRD) allows separation of local and global effects and subdivision of the marine oxygen isotope events 6.2–5.4, which include the last interglaciation, into: (1) a meltwater phase after glacial stage 6, recorded by large amounts of IRD and low foraminiferal abundance, indicating surface water warming; (2) an IRD-free period with high deposition rates of subpolar foraminifera and other CaCO3 pelagic components, recognized here as the “full” interglaciation; and (3) a phase with the recurrence of IRD and the demise of subpolar species. Comparison of ice-core records and marine data implies that the global climate during the last full interglaciation and that during the postdeglacial Holocene were similar. The records show no significantly different variations in the proxy data. In contrast, the oxygen isotopes of planktic foraminifera and ice cores indicate significant differences during each of the deglacial transitions (Terminations I and II) that preceded these two interglaciations. These suggest that during Termination II the climatic evolution in the Nordic seas was less affected by abrupt changes in ocean–atmosphere circulation than during the last glacial to interglacial transition.

The Laschamp excursion is a period of reduced geomagnetic field intensity occurring 40.7 ± 1.0 kyr ago. As a consequence, cosmogenic isotope production increased dramatically and its sensitivity to solar activity was enhanced during this period. The latter occurs because a larger fraction of the lower-energy interstellar galactic cosmic-ray particles, normally excluded by the geomagnetic field, is able to reach Earth's atmosphere. This produces a cosmogenic isotope production signal with a significant structure. As high-resolution 10Be profiles from both Antarctica (EDC) and Greenland (NGRIP-GRIP) during this crucial period are now available, one can use them as input into a box carbon cycle model in order to predict atmospheric 14C variations due to the Laschamp excursion. For this purpose, 10Be data are converted into 14C, using production calculations for the 10Be-14C conversion, after correction for the estimated difference of sensitivity between polar and global 10Be deposition. Several scenarios of carbon cycle state are simulated, from preindustrial to glacial conditions. Applying two recent cosmogenic isotope production calculations for the 10Be to 14C conversion, we found that the resulting atmospheric Δ14C variations are very sensitive to which of these two are employed. For example, Δ14C amplitude under glacial conditions varies from 260‰ (EDC) and 320‰ (Greenland) to 430‰ (EDC) and 510‰ (Greenland) depending on the formulation used for 10Be-14C conversion.
