Beliefs should conform to some norms. Epistemic instrumentalism holds that your beliefs should conform to these epistemic norms just because conforming is useful. But there seems to be cases where conforming to the epistemic norms isn’t useful at all, as in so-called “too-few-reasons” cases. In response to these cases, universal epistemic instrumentalists argue that despite first appearances, it is always useful to conform to the epistemic norms. I argue that all current versions of this universalist response are objectionable. I conclude with a conjecture about why no version of universalism will succeed.
Statistical genetics and brain imaging are together at the technological forefront of research into human intelligence. While these approaches have historically had little practical overlap, they are united both conceptually and in several broad methodological challenges. In concept, both areas attempt to explain complex human behavior by understanding its biological origins, and in doing so have faced the problems that arise from this complexity. The prospect of finding large-effect predictors, for example, has shaped both histories: statistical genetics, with its study of candidate genes that were once thought to have outsized influence on the development of many traits, and neuroscience, with its search for localized brain properties underlying complex behaviors. Both of these areas have then had to adjust their scope and methodology to address the issue of making valid and meaningful predictions from a large number of predictors with small effects. A key understanding is that larger samples of participants than originally employed may be necessary for these predictions to be accurate and useful.
The history of the book is now recognized as a field of central importance for understanding the cultural changes that swept through Tudor England. This companion aims to provide a comprehensive guide to the issues relevant to theearly printed book, covering the significant cultural, social and technological developments from 1476 (the introduction of printing to England) to 1558 (the death of Mary Tudor). Divided into thematic sections (the printed booktrade; the book as artefact; patrons, purchasers and producers; and the cultural capital of print), it considers the social, historical, and cultural context of the rise of print, with the problems as well as advantages of the transmission from manuscript to print. the printers of the period; the significant Latin trade and its effect on the English market; paper, types, bindings, and woodcuts and other decorative features which create the packaged book; and the main sponsors and consumers of the printed book: merchants, the lay clientele, secular and religious clergy, and the two Universities, as well as secular colleges and chantries. Further topics addressed include humanism, women translators, and the role of censorship and the continuity of Catholic publishing from that time. In 1517 work was begun on a new library-room at Eton College, a grander building for an expanding collection. Chains for the books were bought in three different lengths and the windows were stained with vignettes to signify the various suits of study that were laid out on the shelves below. The provost, Roger Lupton, is credited with the building, and he also gave books to the college, a mixed collection in manuscript and print. Eton has been fortunate: the building, now Election Hall, still stands; Lupton's books are still on College shelves. As such, they serve to remind us that when we come to draw our conclusions on the early circulation and impact of print we should be aware of a slant in the evidence, in that conclusions respective to one constituency or another are easier to make from surviving copies, and survival has favoured the higher secular clergy. The libraries of their colleges at Oxford and Cambridge, at Eton and Winchester, and chapter libraries at the secular cathedrals, more or less stable across the breach of the Reformation, have kept good numbers of books on their shelves, unlike the houses of regular clergy where losses were comprehensive. Where there are not the physical books there is often a substantial archive that can hold catalogues or inventories of the pre-Reformation collection, or there may be testamentary evidence concerning bequests of books to the library, or registers of benefactors. Of course, not every class of secular institution was so fortunate.

A transcript survives of the oath sworn in 1465 by the lay sacristan of the collegiate church of St Mary at Warwick on the occasion of his taking office. His duties are spelled out in detail, and include the striking requirement that he spend each night in the sacristy for the better security of the treasures. This paper prints the oath and aims to place it in its institutional context. The medieval sacristy at Warwick survives and details of the oath illuminate details of the architecture. Similar first-floor vestries are known elsewhere, and the suggestion is made that some other churches might also have had inhabited sacristies.
