A hexagonal lattice photonic crystal was fabricated inside the metallic microcavity. And a thin film of Alq3 was incorporated inside the textured cavity as an active medium. The microcavity is designed such that the modified photonic modes due to the textured structure can couple to the excited electronic states of Alq3. This leads to changes in the emission characteristics of Alq3. From the angle-resolved transmission (ARTR) results, the photonic bandgap was observed at all angles from normal incident to 60°. The presence of surface plasmon (SP) was observed in both TM and TE modes of the transmission. Compare to the bulk Alq3 photoluminescence spectrum, significant modification of the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum was observed in the angle-resolved photoluminescence (ARPL). The photoluminescence spectra showed clear suppression in luminescence intensity for the range inside the photonic bandgap. We use decouple approximation for the standing wave modes and derive the photonic waveguide characteristics for two-dimensional textured metallic microcavities. The theoretical result is in good agreement to the experimental result.

Photonic microcavity promises to be one of the photonic devices that can have immediate applications such as super bright LED and low threshold laser. Most photonic crystal structures currently used on microcavity are cubic or hexagonal, whose folding symmetry is no greater than 6. In this work, we fabricated 2-D photonic microcavity with Penrose quasicrystal pattern and measured the angular resolved transmission and photoluminescence spectra of the microcacity. From the experimental result it is found that isotropic photonic band gap exists in the microcavity with the Penrose quasicrystal pattern.

We calculated apparent increment values based on the radiocarbon dates of 21 Estonian ombrotrophic mires (raised bogs). For short periods, the values vary significantly, but the integrated increment for the total complex of ombrotrophic peat shows a strong increasing tendency with decreasing peat age. This is probably due to the decay of accumulated organic matter. Our hypotheses concern the mechanisms of decay and methods for increasing the reliability of the interpolation and extrapolation of 14C data.

This list comprises age measurements carried out at the Institute from 1979 to 1981. Anticoincidence variant was applied to attain higher counting efficiency of a 2-channel scintillation device. The introduction of a plastic scintillator as an active guard around the detector in the 2π geometry decreases the influence of high energy cosmic radiation and reduces the background ca 35 to 75% (Rajamäe & Punning, 1980). The application of an active guard with 4π geometry has proved most effective; as a result, the background decreased 85% to 0.65cpm with the volume of scintillation cocktail 5ml. We have improved our methods for decreasing the actual error of the background. The application of a control channel and consideration of barometric effect results in the increase of dating limits of up to 5000–6000 years (Rajamäe, 1981). Samples are calculated using a half-life of 5568 ± 30 years for 14C. Results are reported in years before 1950. δ13C measurements were performed on the mass-spectrometer MI-1201 and are reported with PDB as a reference standard. The reproducibility of results is ±0.2‰.

The following list includes samples dated at the Institute of Geology, Academy of Sciences of the Estonian SSR in 1978. The measurement of natural 14C activity is performed by 1-channel and 2-channel scintillation devices (Punning & Rajamäe, 1977). Ages are calculated using the half-life of 5568 ± 30 years and 0.95 NBS oxalic acid modern standard with ad 1950 as reference year.

The possibilities of widening the ranges of usage of scintillation counters are studied. As a result of the introduction of the active guard, the background in 14C channel reduces 30 to 75 percent and the stability of background increases. The application of quartz vials and a plastic scintillator as an active guard establishes 14C activity in small amounts of scintillation cocktail (up to 0.1g C) and dates samples with older ages (up to 57,000 years). The parameters of devices are given in case of different amounts of scintillation cocktail.

The following list comprises age measurements carried out during 1976 and 1977. The activity of 14C was computed by one- and two-channel scintillation devices (Punning et al, 1976; 1977). Ages are calculated using a half-life of 5568 ± 30 years for 14G with NBC oxalic acid as a reference standard. All dates are reported in years before 1950. 12C/13C measurements were not performed and results are not corrected for 13C fractionation.

The following list includes samples dated in 1975. The measurement of 14C activity was performed with 1-channel and 2-channel scintillation devices. Special attention was paid to the decrease of the background. The effectiveness of the measurement is ca 50% (Punning, Rajamäe, 1975). The “enriched standard” (Alekseejev et al, 1971) has been used as a contemporary reference standard of modern carbon. Age calculations are based on the 14C half-life of 5568 ± 30 yr, with 1950 as the standard year of reference. All samples are calculated to ± 1σ with respect to sample, standard and background after counting times of at least 2800 minutes. 13C/12C measurements and corrections have not been made for these samples.

This list comprises age measurements carried out from 1973 to 1974 In dating the samples reported here as well as in calculating their ages, the same equipment and methods were used as previously described (R, 19/3, v 15, p 586–591; 1974, v 16, p 388–394).

The following list includes samples dated in 1973. Benzene is used as the carrier of natural 14C activity as previously described (Punning et al, 1973). We used both 1-channel and 2-channel scintillation devices. The detector shield comprises 10cm lead. Around the detector we put 16 Geiger-Mueller type counters in anticoincidence circuit with output signals from detector. It decreased the average background ca 20 to 40%.

Preparations for determining absolute age by the radiocarbon method were started at the Institute of Geology, Academy of Sciences of the Estonian SSR in 1971. Dating of samples has been carried out since 1972.

The following list includes samples dated in 1968 and 1969. Wood dating from A.D. 1850 ± 10 yr is used as contemporary reference standard. Background sample is synthesized from anthracite or shungite. All radiocarbon dates were calculated with C14 half-life of 5568 ± 30 yr. All dates are calculated from the year 1950.

The following list includes C14 dates and deals with the results of the methodological investigations carried out at the Geobiochemical Laboratory of the Institute of Zoology and Botany of the Academy of Sciences of the Estonian SSR in 1967–1968.

In dating the samples reported here as well as in calculating their ages, the same equipment and method of processing and counting were used which were previously described in Tartu I and II.

Preparations for the development of a laboratory for the determination of absolute age by the radiocarbon method were started at the Geobiochemical Laboratory of the Institute of Zoology and Botany of the Academy of Sciences of the Estonian SSR in 1957. Dating of various carbon-containing specimens has been carried out since 1959.
