We investigate the formation of stellar clusters from a Galactic scale SPH simulation. The simulation traces star formation over a 5.6 Myr timescale, with local gravitational instabilities resulting in ~ 105 solar masses of star formation in the form of sink particles. We investigate the time evolution of the physical properties of the forming clusters including their half-mass radii, their energies and the depletion time of the gas. Star formation is driven by the large scale flows which compress the gas to higher densities where self gravity takes over and collapse occurs. We show that the more massive clusters (up to ~ 2 × 104 solar masses) gather their material from of order 10 pc due to these large scale motions associated with the spiral arm passage and shock. The bulk of the gas becomes gravitationally bound near 1-2 Myr before sink formation, and in the absence of feedback, significant accretion ongoing on longer timescales. We trace the hierarchical merging process of cluster formation which naturally results in age spreads of order the crossing time of the original region which provides the gas reservoir for the cluster.

The innermost parsec around Sgr A* has been found to play host to two disks or streamers of O and W-R stars. They are misaligned by an angle approaching 90°. That the stars are approximately coeval indicates that they formed in the same event rather than independently. We have performed smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulations of the infall of a single prolate cloud towards a massive black hole. As the cloud is disrupted, the large spread in angular momentum can, if conditions allow, lead to the creation of misaligned gas disks. In turn, stars may form within those disks. We are now investigating the origins of these clouds in the Galactic center (GC) region.

There has been considerable progress in our understanding of how massive stars form but still much confusion as to why they form. Recent work from several sources has shown that the formation of massive stars through disc accretion, possibly aided by gravitational and Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities is a viable mechanism. Stellar mergers, on the other hand, are unlikely to occur in any but the most massive clusters and hence should not be a primary avenue for massive star formation. In contrast to this success, we are still uncertain as to how the mass that forms a massive star is accumulated. there are two possible mechanisms including the collapse of massive prestellar cores and competitive accretion in clusters. At present, there are theoretical and observational question marks as to the existence of high-mass prestellar cores. theoretically, such objects should fragment before they can attain a relaxed, centrally condensed and high-mass state necessary to form massive stars. Numerical simulations including cluster formation, feedback and magnetic fields have not found such objects but instead point to the continued accretion in a cluster potential as the primary mechanism to form high-mass stars. Feedback and magnetic fields act to slow the star formation process and will reduce the efficiencies from a purely dynamical collapse but otherwise appear to not significantly alter the process.

Super-star clusters are probably the largest star-forming entities in our local Universe, containing hundreds of thousands to millions of young stars usually within less than a few parsecs. While no such systems are known in the Milky Way (MW), they are found especially in pairs of interacting galaxies but also in some dwarf galaxies like R 136 in the Large Magelanic Cloud (LMC). With the use of SPH calculations we show that a natural explanation for this phenomenon is the presence of shear in normal spiral galaxies which facilitates the formation of low-density loose OB associations from giant molecular clouds (GMC) instead of dense super-star clusters. In contrast, in interacting galaxies and in dwarf galaxies, regions can collapse without having a large-scale sense of rotation. This lack of rotational support allows the giant molecular clouds to concentrate into a single, dense and gravitationally bound system.

We present numerical simulations of the passage of clumpy gas through a galactic spiral shock, the subsequent formation of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) and the triggering of star formation. The spiral shock forms dense clouds while dissipating kinetic energy, producing regions that are locally gravitationally bound and collapse to form stars. In addition to triggering the star formation process, the clumpy gas passing through the shock naturally generates the observed velocity dispersion size relation of molecular clouds. In this scenario, the internal motions of GMCs need not be turbulent in nature. The coupling of the clouds' internal kinematics to their externally triggered formation removes the need for the clouds to be self-gravitating. Globally unbound molecular clouds provides a simple explanation of the low efficiency of star formation. While dense regions in the shock become bound and collapse to form stars, the majority of the gas disperses as it leaves the spiral arm.

I review the formation of massive stars in the context of a forming stellar cluster. High-mass stars form in the centre of stellar clusters and thus must be understood in the context of low-mass star formation. Furthermore, they are predominantly in binary systems making further constraints on the formation mechanism. The fragmentation of a turbulent molecular cloud produces a large number of stars with initial masses close to the Jeans mass of the cloud. These stars fall together to form small-N clusters that grow through the infall of gas and stars into the cluster's potential well. Competitive accretion in clusters produces high-mass stars in the cluster centre and a full initial mass function of lower-mass stars. Massive star formation is a process that occurs in the cores of stellar clusters and commonly produces close binary systems. Accretion also forces the cluster to contract, increasing the stellar densities to the point where stellar collisions may occur. Furthermore, accretion in clusters reproduces the high binary frequency of massive stars. Systems evolve from low-mass wide binaries to high-mass close binaries due to gas accretion. This evolution can produce very tight binaries that are expected to merge to form the most massive stars. Binary mergers require stellar densities of order 106 stars pc−3, 100 times smaller than is required for single-star collisions.

We present numerical investigations into the formation of massive stars from turbulent cores of density gradient $\rho \propto r^{-1.5}$. The results of five hydrodynamical simulations are described, following the collapse of the core, fragmentation and the formation of small clusters of protostars. We generate two different initial turbulent velocity fields corresponding to power-law spectra $P \propto k^{-4}$ and $P \propto k^{-3.5}$, and apply two different initial core radii. Calculations are included for both completely isothermal collapse, and a non-isothermal equation of state above a critical density ($10^{-14}$gcm$^{-3}$). Our calculations reveal the preference of fragmentation over monolithic star formation in turbulent cores. Fragmentation was prevalent in all the isothermal cases. Although disc fragmentation was largely suppressed in the non-isothermal runs due to the small dynamic range between the initial density and the critical density, our results show that some fragmentation still persisted. This is inconsistent with previous suggestions that turbulent cores result in the formation of a single massive star. We conclude that turbulence cannot be measured as an isotropic pressure term.

We review recent results from hydrodynamical calculations of the formation of young stellar clusters. The calculations present a highly dynamical picture of star formation where the mass function of stars originates from competitive accretion between protostars and dynamical ejections which halt accretion. Large star clusters form hierarchically; a molecular cloud forms many small clusters that later merge into one large cluster, erasing the initial substructure. Using calculations that resolve fragmentation down to the opacity limit, we examine the implications of dynamical star formation for the IMF, the formation of brown dwarfs and close binaries, and the sizes of protoplanetary discs. Finally, we discuss the dependence of the results on the initial conditions.

We present results from the most complex hydrodynamical star formation calculation performed to date. It follows the collapse and fragmentation of a large-scale turbulent molecular cloud to form dozens of stars and brown dwarfs. It resolves all fragmentation down to the opacity limit, binary stars with separations as small as 1 AU, and circumstellar disks with radii down to ≈ 10 AU. In this proceedings, we examine the formation mechanism of the brown dwarfs and compare the initial mass function and the properties of the brown dwarfs with observations.

The orbital elements of extreme mass ratio binaries will be modified by interactions with surrounding circumstellar disks. For brown dwarf companions to Solar-type stars the resulting orbital migration is sufficient to drive short period systems to merger, creating a brown dwarf desert at small separations. We highlight the similarities and the differences between the migration of brown dwarfs and massive extrasolar planets, and discuss how observations can test a migration model for the brown dwarf desert.

I review the possible formation mechanisms of close binary stars. The formation of close binary systems is problematic in that there is no theory that does not encounter significant difficulties or unknowns. Fission does not appear to occur in stars. Capture is unlikely to form many close binary systems except possibly amongst massive stars. Fragmentation can form close binary systems but these need to accrete the majority of their eventual mass. Furthermore, there appears to be a limited window in initial conditions that may preclude forming sufficient systems in this way. Possible alternatives include the orbital migration of a binary due to its circumbinary disk and the disintegration of a non-hierarchical multiple system.

Calculations of the formation of non-equal mass binary and multiple systems are presented. Binary formation results from the elongated shape of the initial cloud, one fragment forming on each side of the equatorial plane. Slight linear density gradients along the cloud’s major axis are sufficient to form non-equal mass fragments. Resultant mass ratios range from 0.1 to 1.0, in agreement with observations.

In the presence of rotation, the fragments form with surrounding disks. The primary forms with a larger disk than does the secondary. Due to it’s orbital motion around the primary, the secondary can directly accrete the matter that has gathered in the primary’s disk. The secondary is thus less likely to have an appreciable disk, accounting for a redder primary. The binary system’s initially high eccentricity decreases with the continued accretion of higher specific angular momentum at apastron and lower specific angular momentum matter at periastron. Non-coplanar multiple systems with unequal mass components are also formed. The systems are composed of an inner binary and a more distant companion. The mass ratio of the companion binary system is usually less than that of the binary.
