The Variables and Slow Transients Survey (VAST) on the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) is designed to detect highly variable and transient radio sources on timescales from 5 s to $\sim\!5$ yr. In this paper, we present the survey description, observation strategy and initial results from the VAST Phase I Pilot Survey. This pilot survey consists of $\sim\!162$ h of observations conducted at a central frequency of 888 MHz between 2019 August and 2020 August, with a typical rms sensitivity of $0.24\ \mathrm{mJy\ beam}^{-1}$ and angular resolution of $12-20$ arcseconds. There are 113 fields, each of which was observed for 12 min integration time, with between 5 and 13 repeats, with cadences between 1 day and 8 months. The total area of the pilot survey footprint is 5 131 square degrees, covering six distinct regions of the sky. An initial search of two of these regions, totalling 1 646 square degrees, revealed 28 highly variable and/or transient sources. Seven of these are known pulsars, including the millisecond pulsar J2039–5617. Another seven are stars, four of which have no previously reported radio detection (SCR J0533–4257, LEHPM 2-783, UCAC3 89–412162 and 2MASS J22414436–6119311). Of the remaining 14 sources, two are active galactic nuclei, six are associated with galaxies and the other six have no multi-wavelength counterparts and are yet to be identified.

We apply a new method of eclipse mapping to the light curves of eclipsing polars. The technique aims to locate the bright emission associated with the accretion stream, using a technique that makes the fewest prior assumptions about the location of the accretion stream material. We have obtained data of EP Dra and HU Aqr with the S-Cam 2 superconducting tunnel junction camera using the William Herschel Telescope. The location of emission regions in both systems show that previously assumed trajectories are consistent with those found using our technique. Most of the emission is located in a region where we expect material to be confined to magnetic field lines, particularly for HU Aqr, while there appears to be a lack of emission from where we conventionally expect material to follow a ballistic trajectory from the L1 point.

We present here phase-resolved optical spectroscopy and X-ray light curves of the asynchronous polar RX J2115–58 as they change on the beat period.

A hydrodynamic formulation for accretion flow channeled by a dipolar magnetic field is constructed using a curvi-linear coordinate system natural to the field structure. We solve the hydrodynamic equations and determine the velocity, density and temperature profiles of the post-shock accretion flow. The results are applied to accretion flows in intermediate polars. We have found that for systems with massive white dwarfs (~ 1 M⊙) the temperature profiles in the flow can differ significantly to those obtained from models in which the accretion column is assumed to be cylindrical.

We review the current observational status of the ROSAT sources RX J1914.4+2456 and RX J0806.3+1527, and the evidence that these are ultra-short period (< 10 min) binary systems. We argue that an Intermediate Polar interpretation can be ruled out, that they are indeed compact binaries with a degenerate secondary, and that the period seen in the X-ray and optical is the orbital period. A white dwarf primary is preferred, but a neutron star cannot be excluded. We examine the capability of the three current double-degenerate models (Polar, Direct Accretor and Electric Star) to account for the observational characteristics of these systems. All models have difficulties with some aspects of the observations, but none can be excluded with confidence at present. The Electric Star model provides the best description, but the lifetime of this phase requires further investigation. These ultra-short period binaries will be strong gravitational wave emitters in the LISA bandpass, and because of their known source properties will be important early targets for gravitational wave studies.

The XMM-Newton-MSSL survey of polars is a snapshot survey of nearly 40 polars. We present the initial results, with an emphasis on the energy balance in these systems and the number of systems which were observed in a low accretion state. In contrast to the ROSAT results we find that the vast majority of polars show no ‘soft X-ray excess’. We find that half of our sample were observed in low or off accretion states. We find no evidence that these systems were biased towards certain orbital periods.

A method to determine the masses of white dwarfs in magnetic cataclysmic variables from X-ray observations is presented. The method is appropriate for both eclipsing and non-eclipsing systems, for it is insensitive to the orbital inclination of the systems.

We have used the hard X-ray spectrum obtained from Ginga to determine the mass of the white dwarf primary star in 13 magnetic CV systems. Our model for the spectral fit includes the temperature and density structure in the post-shock accretion flow, taking into account the additional cooling of the cyclotron radiation. We obtain good fits to the data, and we compare our derived masses to those determined by other means.

The CV PQ Gem is thought by many to be the first truly ‘Intermediate’ Polar in that it displays characteristics typical of the synchronous and high magnetic field strength (B ~10–230MG) AM Her systems as well as those of the asynchronous (and much weaker magnetic field strength) Intermediate Polar systems. Here we present the results of quasi-simultaneous optical photopolarimetric and EUVE observations.

We present preliminary results of an analysis of X-ray and optical data of the asynchronous AM Her star BY Cam [1]. We use X-ray data from EXOSAT (0.1… 50 keV), Ginga (1.5… 50 keV) and ROSAT (0.1…2.0 keV) and optical data obtained during a 45-day campaign in 1994.

There are 4 known periods: the orbital period (201.30 m), the spin period of the white dwarf (199.3303 m), a spin-orbit beat period (14.15 d) and a side-band period (197.4 m). The detection of this side-band period lends credence to the theory of [2], who suggest that for a stream accreting, diskless, magnetic CV a frequency, f = 2ωspin − Ωorb (=197.399 m), will appear as a strong spike in the power spectrum for certain systems. Wu & Mason (this volume) discuss a competing model where Pspin = 197.4 m.
