We used interferometric observations made with the CHARA Array of 25 B-type stars and 6 O-type stars to obtain precise measurements of angular size, radius, and effective temperature to test stellar atmospheric models for massive stars. Our measured angular diameters range from 1.09 milli-arcseconds (mas) for β Tau down to 0.11 mas for 10 Lac, the smallest star yet resolved with the CHARA Array. The rotational oblateness of the rapidly rotating star ζ Oph is directly measured for the first time. We collected ultraviolet to infrared spectrophotometry for all sample stars and derived temperatures, angular diameters, and reddening estimates that best fit the spectra. There is generally good agreement between the observed and spectral fit angular diameters for the O and B stars, indicating that the fluxes predicted from model atmospheres are reliable. The derived and model temperatures for the O stars are also in fair agreement, however the sample size is small and several of the O stars results we consider to be preliminary. On the other hand, the temperatures derived from angular diameters and fluxes tend to be larger (by ≈ 4%) for the B stars than those from published results based on analysis of the line spectrum (Gordon et al. 2018, 2019).

We are observing a sample of 10 O-type stars and 60 B-type stars to determine angular diameters using the Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy (CHARA) Array, the foremost optical long baseline interferometer in the world. Our goal is to establish accurate stellar parameters to test modern theories of stellar evolution that include rotation. We will combine our stellar angular diameter measurements with flux and line measurements from spectroscopy, projected rotational velocities, and distances to determine radius, effective temperature, luminosity, equatorial rotational velocity, and evolutionary mass. Knowing these properties will allow us to place the stars in a Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and obtain estimates for the age and evolutionary state.

Exoplanet transit events are attractive targets for the ultrahigh-resolution capabilities afforded by optical interferometers. The intersection of two developments in astronomy enable direct imaging of exoplanet transits: first, improvements in sensitivity and precision of interferometric instrumentation; and second, identification of ever-brighter host stars. Efforts are underway for the first direct high-precision detection of closure phase signatures with the CHARA Array and Navy Precision Optical Interferometer. When successful, these measurements will enable recovery of the transit position angle on the sky, along with characterization of other system parameters, such as stellar radius, planet radius, and other parameters of the transit event. This technique can directly determine the planet's radius independent of any outside observations, and appears able to improve substantially upon other determinations of that radius; it will be possible to extract wavelength dependence of that radius determination, for connection to characterization of planetary atmospheric composition & structure. Additional directly observed parameters - also not dependent on transit photometry or spectroscopy - include impact parameter, transit ingress time, and transit velocity.

We present interferometric observations of the Be star ζ Tau obtained using the MIRC beam combiner at the CHARA Array during four epochs in 2007–2009. Fitting a geometric model to the data reveals a nearly edge-on disk with a FWHM of ~1.8 milli-arcsec in the H-band. The non-zero closure phases indicate an asymmetry in the brightness distribution. Interestingly, when combining our results with previously published interferometric observations of ζ Tau, we find a correlation between the position angle of the disk and the spectroscopic V/R ratio, suggesting that the tilt of the disk might be precessing. This work is part of a multi-year monitoring campaign to investigate the development and outward motion of asymmetric structures in the disks of Be stars.

Long baseline interferometry now offers us the opportunity to measure the dimensions of Be star circumstellar disks across the spectrum. This includes the near-infrared continuum where the emission is dominated by bound-free and free-free emission from the ionized disk gas. Here we present the results of calculations of the disk sizes and continuum flux excesses for a simple version of the viscous decretion model of the disk. We compare these results to recent 18 μm flux measurements from the AKARI infrared satellite all-sky survey.

We present the first spatially resolved observations of circumstellar envelopes of 25 bright northern Be stars. The survey was performed with the CHARA Array interferometer in the K-band at intermediate and long baselines. The interferometric visibilities are well fitted by a viscous disk model where the gas density steeply decreases with the radius. Physical and geometrical parameters such as the density profile, the inclination, and the position angles of the circumstellar disks are determined. We find that the density radial exponent ranges between n ≈ 2.4 − 3.2, which is consistent with previous IRAS measurements. We have also obtained simultaneous optical and near-IR spectrophotometric measurements, and found that the model reproduces well the observed disk IR-continuum excess emission. By combining the projected rotational velocity of the Be star with the disk inclination derived from interferometry, we give estimates of the equatorial rotational velocities of these Be stars.

Polaris, the nearest and brightest classical Cepheid, is a member of at least a triple system. It has a wide (18″) physical companion, the F-type dwarf Polaris B. Polaris itself is a single-lined spectroscopic binary with an orbital period of ∼30 years (Kamper 1996). By combining Hipparcos measurements of the instantaneous proper motion with long-term measurements and the Kamper radial-velocity orbit, Wielen et al (2000) have predicted the astrometric orbit of the close companion. Using the Hubble Space Telescope and the Advanced Camera for Surveys' High-Resolution Channel with an ultraviolet (F220W) filter, we have now directly detected the close companion. Based on the Wielen et al orbit, the Hipparcos parallax, and our measurement of the separation (0″.176 ± 0″.002), we find a preliminary mass of 5.0 ± 1.5 M⊙ for the Cepheid and 1.38 ± 0.61 M⊙ for the close companion. These values will be refined by additional HST observations scheduled for the next 3 years.

We have also obtained a Chandra ACIS-I image of the Polaris field. Two distant companions C and D are not X-rays sources and hence are not young enough to be physical companions of the Cepheid. There is one additional stellar X-ray source in the field, located 253″ from Polaris A, which is a possible companion. Further investigation of such a distant companion is valuable to confirm the full extent of the system.
