Antarctic ice-free areas are dominated by wind-dispersed organisms. However, which organisms arrive and circulate in Antarctica and how remain poorly understood. Due to their proximity to South America and less extreme conditions, the South Shetland Islands are likely to receive higher diaspore numbers. One possible consequence of climate change is that newcomers will be able to colonize ice-free areas, altering community compositions and impacting the native biota. We used DNA metabarcoding to identify non-fungal eukaryotic DNA present in the air that could potentially reach and circulate in Antarctica. Air was sampled near the Brazilian Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Station on King George Island between December 2019 and January 2020. Sequences representing a total of 35 taxa from 10 phyla and 3 kingdoms were assigned: Chromista (Ciliophora, Cercozoa, Haptophyta and Ochrophyta), Plantae (Chlorophyta, Bryophyta and Magnoliophyta) and Animalia (Mollusca, Arthropoda and Chordata). The most diverse group were the plants (26 taxa), followed by Chromista (6 taxa). The most abundant sequences represented the green algae Chlamydomonas nivalis. The two angiosperm sequences represent exotic taxa; Folsomia is also exotic and was recorded only on Deception Island. Metabarcoding revealed the presence of previously undocumented airborne diversity, suggesting that the Antarctic airspora includes propagules of both local and distant origin.

Despite the considerable advances in the last years, the health information systems for health surveillance still need to overcome some critical issues so that epidemic detection can be performed in real time. For instance, despite the efforts of the Brazilian Ministry of Health (MoH) to make COVID-19 data available during the pandemic, delays due to data entry and data availability posed an additional threat to disease monitoring. Here, we propose a complementary approach by using electronic medical records (EMRs) data collected in real time to generate a system to enable insights from the local health surveillance system personnel. As a proof of concept, we assessed data from São Caetano do Sul City (SCS), São Paulo, Brazil. We used the “fever” term as a sentinel event. Regular expression techniques were applied to detect febrile diseases. Other specific terms such as “malaria,” “dengue,” “Zika,” or any infectious disease were included in the dictionary and mapped to “fever.” Additionally, after “tokenizing,” we assessed the frequencies of most mentioned terms when fever was also mentioned in the patient complaint. The findings allowed us to detect the overlapping outbreaks of both COVID-19 Omicron BA.1 subvariant and Influenza A virus, which were confirmed by our team by analyzing data from private laboratories and another COVID-19 public monitoring system. Timely information generated from EMRs will be a very important tool to the decision-making process as well as research in epidemiology. Quality and security on the data produced is of paramount importance to allow the use by health surveillance systems.

Depression in older adults with multiple medical comorbidities can contribute to clinical deterioration, and increased mortality. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the first-line treatment for these patients. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of subcutaneous (SC) ketamine as an alternative to ECT. We reviewed the medical records of all consecutive older inpatients with severe depression and multiple medical comorbidities who were referred for ECT but treated with SC ketamine over 1 year in our institution. Demographic data, DSM-5 diagnosis, MÅDRS score, and CGI score were analyzed. Twelve patients aged 67–94 years were included. All patients were rated as severely ill, 83% were women, with a mean of 12.6 (SD, 1.4) medical comorbidities. Remission was achieved in 75% of the intention-to-treat population and 100% of treatment completers. The number of sessions ranged from 1 to 6, and days until remission from 1 to 16. Patients remained without relapse for 8–28 months. SC ketamine was safe and well tolerated, and most adverse events were mild and transient. Although limited by the retrospective open-label design of the study and small sample size, our findings provide a potential new indication for ketamine: treatment of severe depression, not necessarily resistant to antidepressants, in older patients with multiple medical comorbidities, at risk of clinical deterioration, and referral for ECT. SC ketamine was highly effective in this population, with no relapse and good tolerance. Randomized controlled trials are needed to adequately test the use of ketamine in this specific group.

Jaguariaíva 1 is a sandstone rockshelter located in Jaguariaíva, Paraná State, Brazil, with rock art on the surface of the walls and ceiling. A stratigraphic analysis of the soil within the shelter showed six occupational layers and a superficial disturbed layer with evidence from the end of the 19th century. The establishment of a rock-art chronology became possible using fallen painted rock sections incorporated into three sedimentary levels underlying this rock shelter. These show superimpositions of several pictures of differently sized animals, such as deer, and lattice motifs, which are generally associated with the Planalto rock art tradition. The chronological study was performed based on radiocarbon (14C) analysis of charcoal collected from six excavated subsurface archaeological contexts. The two oldest layers, associated with hunters and gatherers of the Umbu tradition, were dated to 7680–7516 cal BP and 6913–6656 cal BP. There are four occupational layers from ceramists and farmers related to the south Jê linguistic family, and linked to the Itararé-Taquara archaeological tradition: layer 3 linked to the oldest of such occupation, dated to 3058–2796 cal BP, followed by layer 4, dated to 2080–1701 cal BP. Layers 5 and 6, dated to 1995–1526 cal BP and 540–152 cal BP, respectively.

The Radiocarbon Laboratory of the Universidade Federal Fluminense, in Brazil, has been successfully applying the zinc reduction method for graphitization of carbon samples since the development of its early protocols in 2009. Successive methodological research aiming to improve and, ultimately, optimize the precision and accuracy of our results indicates that graphitization temperatures as low as 460°C promote erratic 13C isotopic fractionation, but an approximately constant fractionation of about –5‰ is achieved at 520°C. In this work, we present isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) δ13C results for 14C reference materials graphitized at 550°C with variable amounts of zinc. Based on the results obtained from the addition of 20, 35, and 50 mg of zinc, we conclude that a slightly lower variation in 13C isotope fractionation during graphitization is obtained with less zinc. Moreover, the average isotopic fractionation is not altered by increasing the graphitization temperature from 520°C to 550°C.

Suppose that red and blue points occur in Rd according to two simple point processes with finite intensities λR and λB, respectively. Furthermore, let ν and μ be two probability distributions on the strictly positive integers with means ν̅ and μ̅, respectively. Assign independently a random number of stubs (half-edges) to each red (blue) point with law ν (μ). We are interested in translation-invariant schemes for matching stubs between points of different colors in order to obtain random bipartite graphs in which each point has a prescribed degree distribution with law ν or μ depending on its color. For a large class of point processes, we show that such translation-invariant schemes matching almost surely all stubs are possible if and only if λRν̅ = λBμ̅, including the case when ν̅ = μ̅ = ∞ so that both sides are infinite. Furthermore, we study a particular scheme based on the Gale-Shapley stable marriage problem. For this scheme, we give sufficient conditions on ν and μ for the presence and absence of infinite components. These results are two-color versions of those obtained by Deijfen, Holroyd and Häggström.

Habitat preference and spatial distribution of Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) in Norte Bay, southern Brazil, was studied from 2001 to 2005. Boat surveys (N = 91) were made to evaluate the spatial distribution of the dolphins. Seven habitat variables were integrated into a geographical information system, and habitat preference was tested using the ‘Neu method’ and a habitat index. The Guiana dolphins did not use all habitat types in the same proportion as were available. Areas used more intensively included, in order of importance: (1) areas with a steep sloping sea-floor; (2) areas further from urban areas; (3) areas further from mangroves; (4) areas near the mouth of the bay; (5) shallow water areas; (6) areas of clayey-silt sediments; and (7) areas close to shore. From 2001 to 2005 there was a shift in spatial distribution and habitat use by the dolphins. The low frequency of use of areas close to urban encroachment and its related impacts to the marine environment raises concern about the coastal habitat destruction. The Guiana dolphin may be considered a habitat specialist, despite its wide latitudinal distribution in the western Atlantic Ocean. The ecological niche of the species may be defined by a narrow strip of shallow coastal waters (mostly < 30 m) bordering the coastline. The shift in the spatial use was probably linked with changes in the abundance of important prey of the species and possibly was caused by the collapse of a fish stock in the study area region. Different habitats may favour different assemblages of prey and consequently different foraging strategies by the dolphins. Human-related habitat alterations throughout the range of this species are likely to affect dolphins' ecology in many ways and, thus, must be evaluated and mitigated to conserve their critical habitats.

Populations of grassland birds are declining in Brazil due to profound alterations to grassland habitats. In this paper, we present recent records and range extensions for 12 threatened or little known Brazilian grassland species: Ocellated Crake Micropygia schomburgkii, Sickle-winged Nightjar Eleothreptus anomalus, Campo Miner Geositta poeciloptera, Rufous-sided Pygmy-tyrant Euscarthmus rufomarginatus, Sharp-tailed Grass-tyrant Culicivora caudacuta, Cock-tailed Tyrant Alectrurus tricolor, Cinereous Warbling-finch Poospiza cinerea, Black-masked Finch Coryphaspiza melanotis, Tawny-bellied Seedeater Sporophila hypoxantha, Marsh Seedeater S. palustris, Chestnut Seedeater S. cinnamomea and Black-bellied Seedeater S. melanogaster. We also comment on the biogeography and conservation of these species.

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) affects 3–8% of women of reproductive age and is characterized by severe mood symptoms that cause important functional impairment. Serotonergic antidepressants appear to be an effective treatment for this disorder. The purpose of this study was to collect evidence on the efficacy and tolerability of duloxetine, a dual reuptake inhibitor of serotonin and norepinephrine, in the treatment of PMDD. We conducted a pilot, single-blind, non-controlled, fixed-dose trial. After two cycles for diagnosis confirmation, including a single-blind placebo cycle, 20 women with PMDD were treated continuously for three menstrual cycles with 60 mg/d duloxetine. The primary measure of the efficacy of treatment with duloxetine was the significant reduction in premenstrual symptoms demonstrated by the comparison between the mean Daily Record of Severity of Problems (DRSP) scores at baseline to endpoint (p=0.0002). Statistically significant symptom reduction was observed in the first treatment cycle and throughout all the treatment phase. Clinical response, defined as a reduction ⩾50% of baseline premenstrual symptoms, occurred in 65% of subjects (intention-to-treat population). Significant improvements were demonstrated by secondary measures, including reduction in self-rated functional impairment (p=0.01) and improvement in quality of life (p=0.04). The main side-effects associated with duloxetine were dry mouth, nausea, drowsiness, insomnia, decreased appetite, decreased libido, and sweating. Duloxetine was effective and generally well tolerated in the treatment of PMDD. Further large-scale, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies are needed to evaluate duloxetine as an additional treatment strategy for the management of PMDD.

We set out to investigate the possible beneficial effects on cognitive function of demented patients with cobalamin deficiency after cobalamin replacement. A total of 181 consecutive, demented (DSM-III or DSM-III-R criteria and score below 24 on the Mini-Mental State Examination [MMSE] outpatients (mean age 77.5 years) were prospectively evaluated and had their vitamin B12 level measured by radioimmunoassay. The frequency of vitamin B12 deficiency (less than 200 pg/mL) was 25% (46 patients). Treatment outcome was obtained in 19 patients (19 of 46). Despite cobalamin replacement, 16 of 19 patients persisted in showing progressive decline during follow-up visits (3 to 24 months). The nonresponse to vitamin B12 replacement in most cases seems to reflect the presence of associated irreversible dementia or a follow-up of shorter duration in a few patients. All of the patients who showed some improvement (MMSE returned to normal values) had mild dementia with a history of less than 2 years. Thus, screening for B12 deficiency should be considered in patients with recent onset of mild mental status changes.
