It is now over three years since I published a list of Albertan butterflies under the above title. The list gave promise “to be continued,” and it was fully intended at the time to publish the continuation the same year, but for a variety of reasons it had to be postponed. The delay, however, has not been without advantages. Not only have a number of species come to hand that had not been recorded here up to that time, but many that were then standing under names by which I had known them for years, have been found to be wrongly named, and several of them have been described as new species. Closer study, too, of long series, has resulted in a better understanding of nearly allied forms; and it is hoped that some of the notes here appended, though they have no claim to perfection, will enable some obscure species to be more easily separated than they have been hitherto. At the same time, I much regret that I have not been able to make more comparison of local material with that from other districts. Not only has it been hard to spare the time which much exchanging calls for, but it has often proved a very difficult, if not impossible matter, to get by exchange some of the commonest species, their very commonness seeming to render them, so to speak, scarce, at least in collections. I hope, however, to pay more attention to exchange in the future, and when more forms from other localities have come to hand the result of their study, and comparison with their Alberta representatives will probably be published from time to time.

267. Euxoa nesilens, Smith(Jour. N.Y. Ent. Soc. XI., 192, Dec., 1903). —Described from Calgary and from Brandon, Man. The type is a Calgary specimen in Prof. Smith's collection, and a ♀ co-type is in my own. The description says: “In general appearance it resembles siles, but does not have the black basal streak, nor the blackish suffusion between the ordinary spots. On the other hand, it does have more complete, better marked median lines … Its distinctness is clear, and its association is with basalis, from which, however, it differs obviously in colour.”

Perhaps the following short account of a few days' spring collecting here may be of interest to readers of the Canadian Entomologist.

The locality I have worked from during the two years that I have been in the country, is close to the mouth of Fish Creek, about twelve miles south of Calgary, and a mile from the right bank (south) of Bow River. I have a fellow worker about nine miles further west, near the head of Pine Creek, by name Mr. Arthur Hudson, a keen observer, and, I believe, the only entomologist besides myself who has ever collected here for a whole season, and between us we are at present almost daily increasing the list of macro-lepidoptera found around Calgary. We have already over fifty species of butterflies on the list, with three or four more doubtful species, and are confident that we shall be able to make several additions during the coming season. Of the moths, more particularly the Noctuidæ (and their name here is certainly Legion!), new comers never cease, as I think Prof. Smith can testify. When Mr. Elwes paid me a visit in July, 1893, he asked: “Treacle is not much used here, is it?” I replied that I had only been “at it” for a month, and was fairly well pleased with the result, though of course my take might have been exceptional. Were I asked the same question now, I should, without hesitation, reply: “Well, just isn't it, that's all, and from June to October, too!” During last July I not unfrequently counted from sixty to eighty moths on a treacle patch about eighteen inches long and three or four wide, comprising about fifteen or sixteen species. A sight such as that, however, certainly is exceptional. However, I have other modes of collecting to speak of now, as at this early date treacle is scarcely worth working.

309. M. Dodii, Smith.—(Can. Ent., XXXVU., 152, June, 1904). Described from Calgary and from Bullion Park, Colo. The type is a Calgary specimen at Rutger's College, and I have two ♂ co-types.

452. Rachela Bruceata, Hulst.— Not observed previous to 1898. It appeared in millions in 1902, and in the following year was still more abundant. In those two years hundreds of acres of Populus tremuloides were completely denuded by the larv♀ during June. It appeared to be aided in its depredations by a Tortix, the name of which I have not yet discovered, but subsequent observation brings me to belive that by far the greater part of the denudation was caused by this species.
