To compare the effect of right- or left-sided cochlear implantation on listening skills in a paediatric population.
A retrospective analysis was conducted on the listening skills performance data of children who were operated on and followed up at the Çukurova University Department of Otorhinolaryngology between 2007 and 2011. Sixty-three patients were included in the study. Patients were evaluated using the Listening Progress Profile, the Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale and the littlEARS test.
The mean age of the children was two years (range of one to five years). Twenty-nine patients were male and 34 were female. Twenty-eight patients were implanted in the right ear and 35 in the left ear. There were no statistically significant differences between right and left ear implantees in terms of listening skills performance.
This study indicates that the choice of cochlear implant side is not crucial for the development of listening skills.
To discuss the histopathogenesis and treatment choices for synchronous tumours of the larynx.
We present two cases of synchronous laryngeal leiomyosarcoma and squamous cell carcinoma. The first case was an early-stage tumour and the second an advanced-stage tumour of the larynx. Selection of adequate treatment for synchronous tumours is difficult because of different spreading rates and metastatic patterns. Treatment choices for both the primary tumour site and the neck should be related to the stage of the squamous component of the tumour.
In such cases, the tumour location, tumour stage and lymphatic metastases must be carefully evaluated in order to make the optimum treatment choice. Treatment evaluation of the neck should be related to the stage of the squamous component of these synchronous tumours. Partial laryngectomy techniques may be preferred if the extent of the disease permits.
Leishmaniasis comprises a group of diseases transmitted by the bite of infected sand flies. There are three basic clinical forms of leishmaniasis: cutaneous, mucocutaneous and visceral. Leishmaniasis may mimic neoplastic lesions and other infectious diseases because of similar disease localisation, physical characteristics and histopathological findings.
A 35-year-old man was referred to our clinic with a presumed diagnosis of angiolymphoid hyperplasia of the auricle; however, this lesion proved to be cutaneous leishmaniasis. The definitive diagnosis was reached by identifying the parasites on smears obtained from the lesion.
It should be borne in mind that cutaneous leishmaniasis presenting as isolated auricular lesions may mimic neoplasia. In the present case report, we discuss auricular cutaneous leishmaniasis and we review the relevant literature.
In this report a 13-year-old girl with characteristic clinical and pathological features of alveolar soft part sarcoma of the tongue is presented. Alveolar soft part sarcoma is a rare malignant tumor of unknown origin. Forty eight cases of alveolar soft part sarcoma have so far been reported in the head and neck region. Median survival reported for all sites of the body is 79 months following various modes of therapy. In this case, the treatment was surgical excision of the mass combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The patient has been asymptomatic for the past 12 months.
