The new wermlandite-group mineral erssonite, ideally CaMg7Fe3+2(OH)18(SO4)2⋅12H2O (or [Mg7Fe3+2(OH)18][Ca(SO4)2]⋅12H2O), was discovered in a late-stage, low-temperature assemblage in cavities of a magnetite-bearing dolomitic rock from the Långban deposit, Värmland county, Bergslagen ore province, Sweden. The associated minerals are dolomite, calcite, members of the magnetite–magnesioferrite solid-solution series, phlogopite, chrysotile, pyroaurite and norbergite. Erssonite has a vitreous lustre and forms colourless, platy hexagonal crystals flattened on [0001], up to 0.5 mm across and up to 10 μm thick, occurring mainly as aggregates in cavities of dolomitic rock. Erssonite is malleable; separate crystals are flexible and non-elastic, with a perfect, mica-like cleavage on {0001}. The calculated density is equal to 2.02 g⋅cm–3. Raman spectroscopy shows the presence of typical bands for S–O bonds attributed to intercalated SO42– anions and structural OH– anions together with the absence of C–O bonds, attributed to carbonate anions. The chemical composition is (wt.%, electron microprobe, H2O content is calculated from structure data): MgO 28.67, CaO 2.76, Al2O3 0.23, Cr2O3 0.23, Fe2O3 16.00, SiO2 0.48, SO3 14.80, H2O 35.58, total 98.75. The empirical formula based on 38 O atoms is H41.48Ca0.52Mg7.47Fe3+2.11Al0.05Cr0.03S1.94Si0.08O38. The ideal formula is CaMg7Fe3+2(OH)18(SO4)2⋅12H2O or {Mg7Fe3+2(OH)18}{[Ca(H2O)6](SO4)2(H2O)6}. The crystal structure was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and refined to R = 0.093. Erssonite is trigonal, P$\bar{3}$c1, with a = 9.3550(6), c = 22.5462(14) Å, V = 1708.8(2) Å3 and Z = 2. The strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d, Å (I, %)(hkl)] are: 11.22 (90)(002), 5.63 (64)(004), 4.670 (100)(110, 104, 014), 2.626 (64)(032, 302), 2.435 (66)(034, 304) and 1.951 (45)(038, 308). The mineral is named in honour of the Swedish amateur mineralogist Dr. Anders Ersson (b. 1971).

A new member of the gadolinite supergroup, gadolinite-(Nd), IMA2016-013, ideally Nd2FeBe2Si2O10, was found in the Malmkärra mine, ~3.5 km WSW of Norberg, south-central Sweden, where it occurs in association with fluorbritholite-(Ce), västmanlandite-(Ce), dollaseite-(Ce), bastnäsite-(Ce) and tremolite. Gadolinite-(Nd) forms anhedral grains up to 150 µm in size, commonly occurring as aggregates of olive green colour. The crystals are transparent with vitreous to adamantine lustre. Gadolinite-(Nd) is brittle with conchoidal fracture, no cleavage or parting was observed. It has a white streak, the Mohs hardness is 6.5–7 and the calculated density is 4.86 g cm–3. Optically, the mineral is weakly pleochroic in shades of olive green, biaxial (–), nα = 1.78(1), nβ(calc.) = 1.80, nγ = 1.81(1) measured in white light, 2V(meas.) = 62(3)°. Electron-microprobe and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis [in wt.%] provided SiO2 21.77, Y2O3 5.49, La2O3 2.78, Ce2 O3 14.04, Pr2O3 3.28, Nd2O3 19.27, Sm2O3 5.30, Eu2O3 0.24, Gd2O3 4.10, Tb2O3 0.36, Dy2O3 1.32, Ho2O3 0.18, Er2O3 0.38, MgO 0.51, CaO 0.14, MnO 0.10, FeO 10.62, B2O3 0.10, BeOcalc. 8.99, H2Ocalc. 0.55 and total 99.52 giving the following empirical formula (based on 2 Si): (Nd0.632 Ce0.472Y0.268Sm0.168Gd0.125Pr0.110La0.094Dy0.039Ca0.014Er0.011Tb0.011Eu0.008Ho0.008)∑1.957(Fe0.816Mg0.070Mn0.008)∑0.894(Be1.984B0.016)∑2.000Si2O9.660OH0.337. A weak Raman vibration band at ~3525 cm–1 confirms the presence of water in the structure. Gadolinite-(Nd) is monoclinic, P21/c, with a = 4.8216(3) Å, b = 7.6985(4) Å, c = 10.1362(6) Å, β = 90.234(4)°, V = 376.24(6) Å3 and Z = 2. The strongest X-ray diffraction lines are [dobs in Å (hkl) Irel]: 4.830 (100) 72, 3.603 (021) 37, 3.191(-112) 52, 3.097 (013) 35, 2.888 (121) 100, 2.607(113) 49, 2.412 (200) 24. Along with the Malmkärra mine, gadolinite-(Nd) was also recorded also at Johannagruvan and Nya Bastnäs. The minerals of the gadolinite subgroup together with fluorbritholite-(Ce) incorporate the highest fraction of medium-to-heavy rare-earth elements among associated rare-earth element minerals in the Malmkärra mine and possibly in all Bastnäs-type deposits.

Using type material from the Österby pegmatite in Dalarna, Sweden, the chemical composition and structural parameters of thalénite-(Y) [ideally Y3Si3O10(OH)] were examined by wavelength dispersive spectroscopy electron microprobe (WDS EMP) analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. High contrast back-scatter electron images of the Österby material show at least two generations of thalénite-(Y). The formula of the primary thalénite-(Y) normalized to 11 anions is (Y2.58Dy0.11Yb0.09Gd0.06Er0.06Ho0.02Sm0.02Tb0.02Lu0.02Nd0.01Tm0.01)Σ3.00Si3.01O10F0.97OH0.03. The secondary thalénite-(Y), replacing the primary material, is weakly enhanced in Y and depleted in the lightest and the heaviest rare-earth elements, yielding the formula (Y2.63Dy0.12Yb0.06Gd0.06Er0.05Ho0.02Sm0.02Tb0.02Tm0.01Nd0.01Lu0.01)Σ3.00Si3.01O10F0.98OH0.02. Structural data for thalénite-(Y) from Österby clearly indicate the monoclinic space group P21/n, with a = 7.3464(4), b = 11.1726(5), c = 10.4180(5) Å, β = 97.318(4)°, V = 848.13(7) Å3, Z = 4, which is consistent with previous investigations. The structure was refined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data to R1 = 0.0371 for 1503 unique observed reflections, and the final chemical composition obtained from the refinement, (Y2.64Dy0.36)Σ3.00F0.987[Si3O10], Z = 4, is in good agreement with the empirical formula resulting from electron microprobe (EMP) analysis. Both techniques reveal a strong dominance of F over OH, which means that the type material actually corresponds to the fluorine analogue. Moreover, new EMP analyses of samples of thalénite-(Y) from an additional seven localities (Åskagen and Reunavare in Sweden; White Cloud and Snow Flake in Colorado, USA; the Guy Hazel claim in Arizona, USA; Suishoyama and Souri in Japan) clearly show the prevalence of F over OH as well. Based on these observations, the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association has recommended a redefinition of the chemical composition of thalénite-(Y) to represent the F-dominant species with the ideal formula Y3Si3O10F, as it has historical priority. Consequently, the later described fluorthalénite-(Y) has to be discredited.

Studies in Sweden and Australia have examined the relationship between number of CAG repeats in the androgen receptor gene and psychological traits — three Masculinity-Femininity (M-F) measures in Australia, and the Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP) in Sweden. The present study derived M-F scales from the KSP items, and scales corresponding to several KSP scales from the items of the inventories used in Australia, to permit cross-validation of the Australian results in the Swedish sample, and vice versa. The derivation of scales was facilitated by the fact that items from both inventories had been used with a large twin sample in the US. Correlation of the derived scales with androgen receptor gene CAG-repeat scores for women in the Australian and Swedish samples failed to provide clear evidence of replication of either set of original correlations in the other sample, although there were a few hints of consistency. It was concluded that if the number of CAG repeats on this gene is related to psychological traits at all, the relationship is a weak one.

The gender diagnosticity (GD) approach of Lippa (1995) was used to evaluate the relationship of within-sex differences in psychological masculinity–femininity to a genetic characteristic, the length of a repeated CAG sequence in the X-linked androgen receptor (AR) gene. Previously assessed adult samples in Australia and Sweden were used for this purpose. A weak relationship (correlations in the range .11 to .14) was obtained in both countries. Additional data from adolescent twins from Australia (12-, 14-, 16-year-olds) did not confirm such a relationship at those ages, especially for males. The fact that this sample consisted of twins permitted two kinds of within-pair comparisons: (1) Did the dizygotic twin who had the longer AR sequence have the higher GD score? (2) Was one twin's GD score more highly correlated with the other twin's AR score in MZ than in DZ pairs? The answer in both cases was negative. Clarification of these relationships will require large samples and measurements at additional ages.

Scientific studies of challenges of climate change could be improved by including other sources of knowledge, such as traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), in this case relating to the Sámi. This study focuses on local variations in snow and ice conditions, effects of the first durable snow, and long term changes in snow and ice conditions as pre-requisites for understanding potential future changes. Firstly, we characterised snow types and profiles based on Sámi categories and measured their density and hardness. Regression analysis showed that density can explain much of the variation in hardness, while snow depth was not significantly correlated with hardness. Secondly, we found that whether it is dry/cold or warm/wet around the fall of the first durable snow is, according to Sámi reindeer herders, crucial information for forecasting winter grazing conditions, but this has had limited focus within science. Thirdly, elderly herders’ observations of changes in snow and ice conditions by ‘reading nature’ can aid reinterpretation of meteorological data by introducing researchers to alternative perspectives. In conclusion we found remarkable agreement between scientific measurements and Sámi terminology. We also learnt that TEK/science cooperation has much potential for climate change studies, though time and resources are needed to bridge the gap between knowledge systems. In particular, TEK attention to shifts in nature can be a useful guide for science.

Snow avalanches threaten a large part of the residential area of Bolungarvik, a town of 1100 inhabitants located in the Vestfirðir peninsula, northwest Iceland. Methods for the complete protection of all the houses were requested by the Ministry of Environment. As conventional deflecting and catching dams were not feasible due to avalanche velocities of > 40 m s–1 in the actual defence area, a huge open pit built into the lower mountainside was proposed. The pit is designed to dissipate the energy of avalanches of any expected size. It is 1000 m long, and the upper and lower pit walls are 30–40 and 15–20 m high, respectively. The downhill side of the pit is increased to 30 m by a nearly vertical, 10–15 m high dam. The bottom is 25–40 m wide, and the effective cross-sections are 700–2300 m2. The total storage capacity is approximately 106 m3. Cost-benefit analyses indicate that the development cost of the pit protection is favourable compared to the value of the houses as well as alternative safety solutions.

Interspecific and intraspecific variation in the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA of ectomycorrhizal fungi of 44 species in 17 genera were examined using the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) method. For each species, two to five herbarium vouchers (mainly basidiocarps), collected throughout Fennoscandia, were examined. The ITS region was amplified using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and the universal primers ITS1 and ITS4, and subjected to RFLP analysis with three endonucleases. Intraspecific polymorphisms in the ITS region were found in seven species (in nine of the 132 herbarium vouchers). Polymorphisms were due to length mutations, ranging from 5 to 15 bp in four of the seven polymorphic species and mutations in endonuclease restriction sites in six species, mostly affecting only one endonuclease, but in two species two endonucleases. Using a single endonuclease, a unique RFLP pattern could be obtained for more than half the investigated species. By combining different endonucleases, 34 (77%) of the species could be distinguished from another. The remaining RFLP types occurred in one genus. On the basis of the low intra- but high interspecific variation in the ITS region, it is concluded that most ectomycorrhizas formed by the 44 investigated species should be recognized by comparison with this dataset, if the mycorrhizas are sampled from a site located in Fennoscandia. However, in datasets from even larger geographical areas encompassing a higher degree of intraspecific variation in the ITS region, or when mycorrhizas from several sites distant from each other are compared, it might be necessary to include local reference species.
