  • Summary

    This chapter explores the relationship between climate distress – particularly fear and sadness about climate change – and clinical-level psychiatric symptoms in children and young people, focusing on pediatric anxiety and depression. In response to societal tendencies to under- or overplay the mental health risks of climate emotional impacts, it describes the spectrum of healthy and unhealthy pediatric anxiety and depression, the role that chronic stress and direct climate impacts play on child and adolescent brain development and clinical syndromes, and the ways that responding emotionally to climate change can influence youth identity development and emotional strength. The chapter provides a template for how to assess young people’s climate emotions clinically, offering several detailed case descriptions to illustrate how stress, psychopathology, psychological and brain development, and climate emotions can weave together to influence the sum of a young person’s presentation. As parents’ and other adults’ responses play a key role in whether these emotions evolve to a clinical level, it also suggests some best practices for interacting with climate-distressed youth to minimize poor clinical outcomes.

    This chapter by Jennifer Uchendu and Elizabeth Haase is dedicated to children and youth-led activism, with a focus on Jennifer’s journey as a youth climate activist leading work at SustyVibes in Nigeria. SustyVibes is a youth-led and youth-focused organization making sustainability actionable and relatable for young people through community-led projects. The chapter chronicles aspects of Jennifer’s journey that may be significant for young people and researchers of youth activism. We also discuss the main types of activism and highlight principles that have been adopted by youth climate activist groups to help them be most inclusive and effective, preventing burnout and group devolution. Drawing from Jennifer’s experience with eco-anxiety and related stress, we review the literature on the risks and benefits of activism – for youth mental health and for youth climate activists in particular – in hopes that her story can be generalizable and empowering to others.

  • Climate change is the biggest threat of our century, one that will impact every aspect of children's lives: their physical, emotional, moral, financial, and social health and well-being. The relationship between the climate crisis and mental health in young people is therefore by definition multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural, requiring multiple perspectives on how to understand and guide younger generations. This book provides a unique synthesis of those perspectives - the science, psychology, and social forces that can be brought to bear on supporting young people's psychological well-being. No matter the setting in which an adult may interact with younger people, this book provides the intellectual rigor and tools to ensure those interactions are as helpful and supportive as they can be.

  • Unconventional agents and conventional viruses provide model systems to investigate the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The essay which follows examines the hypothetical role of herpes simplex in AD and presents some generally applicable experimental approaches to detecting genes in brain tissues. The concluding section, on parallels between AD and diseases of the brain caused by unconventional viruses, defines strategies for isolating genes related to pathology.

  • Summary

    This chapter describes the major anxiety disorders and their associations with headache, the increased burden of comorbid anxiety and headache, the mechanisms hypothesized to explain the connection between anxiety and headache, and the behavioral treatments and strategies for managing anxiety and headache. Anxiety disorders are a separate category of psychiatric disorders in The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV-TR (DSM-IV-TR), which contains six major anxiety disorders, namely generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, specific phobias, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Anxiety disorders and primary headache are commonly occurring conditions, both independently and as co-occurring conditions. The presence of anxiety and anxiety disorders in individuals with headache negatively impacts quality of life, functioning, and response to headache treatment. Effective management of headache necessitates understanding, identifying, and addressing anxiety, anxiety-related disorders, and their underlying factors that are related to headache.
