This research communication reports the relative abundance of fatty acids in mammary fat pad (MFP) and subcutaneous adipose (SCA) tissues for Holstein heifer calves receiving 0, 3, or 12 daily injections of estradiol immediately prior to tissue collection. The objective of this study was to determine if the MFP and SCA fatty acid profiles were affected by estradiol administration and if such a response differs between adipose tissue depots. Twelve Holstein heifer calves were reared on a common diet and administered 12 daily injections prior to euthanasia. Injections were either daily injections of corn oil (n = 4; CON), 9 injections of corn oil followed by 3 injections of estradiol (n = 4; SHORT), or 12 injections of estradiol (n = 4; LONG). Fatty acids were extracted from collected MFP and SCA tissues samples and analyzed using gas chromatography. The MFP tissues contained a greater abundance of saturated fatty acids than SCA tissues which complemented a reduced abundance of mono-unsaturated fatty acids in the MFP than SCA. Extended duration of estradiol administration increased the abundance of total omega 3 fatty acids in both MFP and SCA tissues. There was a treatment by tissue interaction for several of the C18:1 and C18:2 isomers indicating that estradiol's effects on fatty acid uptake and metabolism are tissue specific. Additionally, C18 uptake and metabolisms may have important roles in mammary growth and development. Together, these results indicate that the MFP responds differently to estradiol administration than SCA tissues and that these alterations are associated with different degrees of induced mammary growth via estradiol.

Bentonite is one of the more safety-critical components of the engineered barrier system in the disposal concepts developed for many types of radioactive waste. It is used due to its favourable properties (including plasticity, swelling capacity, colloid filtration, low hydraulic conductivity, high retardation of key radionuclides) and its stability in relevant geological environments. However, bentonite is unstable under alkaline conditions and this has driven interest in low-alkali cements (leachate pH of 10–11). To build a robust safety case, it is important to have supporting natural analogue data to confirm understanding of the likely long-term performance of bentonite. In Cyprus, the presence of natural bentonite in close proximity to natural alkaline groundwaters permits the zones of potential bentonite/alkaline water reaction to be studied as an analogy of the potential reaction zones in the repository. Here, the results indicate minimal volumetric reaction of bentonite, with production of a palygorskite secondary phase.

Biological weathering is a function of biotic energy expenditure. Growth and metabolism of organisms generates acids and chelators, selectively absorbs nutrient ions, and applies turgor pressure and other physical forces which, in concert, chemically and physically alter minerals. In unsaturated soil environments, plant roots normally form symbiotic mycorrhizal associations with fungi. The plants provide photosynthate-carbohydrate-energy to the fungi in return for nutrients absorbed from the soil and released from minerals. In ectomycorrhiza, one of the two major types of mycorrhiza of trees, roots are sheathed in fungus, and 15—30% of the net photosynthate of the plants passes through these fungi into the soil and virtually all of the water and nutrients taken up by the plants are supplied through the fungi. Here we show that ectomycorrhizal fungi actively forage for minerals and act as biosensors that discriminate between different grain sizes (53—90 μm, 500—1000 μm) and different minerals (apatite, biotite, quartz) to favour grains with a high surface-area to volume ratio and minerals with the highest P content. Growth and carbon allocation of the fungi is preferentially directed to intensively interact with these selected minerals to maximize resource foraging.

The Cyprus Natural Analogue Project was carried out due to the requirement to support ongoing laboratory and modelling efforts on the potential reaction of the bentonite buffer with cementitious leachates in the repository engineered barrier system. Although it is known that the higher pH (12.5–13) leachates from ordinary Portland cement will degrade bentonite, it is unclear if this will also be the case for the lower pH (10–11) leachates typical of low alkali cements. Ongoing laboratory and underground rock laboratory programmes, which are currently investigating this, face the obstacle of slow kinetics and the production of short-lived metastable phases, meaning obtaining unambiguous results may take decades. It was therefore decided to implement a focussed natural analogue study on bentonite/low alkali cement leachate reactions to provide indications of the probable long-term reaction products and reaction pathways to provide feedback on the existing short-term investigations noted above and to ascertain if any critical path research and development needs to be instigated now. The results of the analyses presented here, in this short overview of the project, suggest that there has been very limited alkaline groundwater reaction with the bentonite. This is generally supported by both the geomorphological evidence and the natural decay series data which imply groundwater/rock interaction in the last 105 a.

Financial conditions existing in agriculture are placing severe pressure on lenders as well as borrowers. Data from both good and foreclosed Federal Land Bank loans were analyzed to determine the most important characteristics leading to the failure of loans. The analysis was completed by comparing means through t-tests and the development of a discriminant model. The ratio of total debt service to total income, the debt to asset ratio, the ratio of total loan amount to appraised value, and the ratio of acres in security to acres owned were determined to be the most important discriminating variables.

In mice homozygous for the asebia mutation (abJ/abJ) the sebaceous glands were small and the sebaceous cells abnormal, the fully grown hair follicles were twice as long as those in wild-type (+ / +) mice, the catagen and telogen follicles were abnormal and, because the active phase of the hair cycle was longer than in + / + mice, the initiation of the second hair cycle was delayed. The abnormalities in the sebaceous glands and in catagen and telogen follicles were also present in abJ/abJ embryonic skin grown on a nude host but anagen of the second hair cycle commenced at about the same time in abJ / abJ and + / + grafts. When recombinants incorporating mutant or wild-type epidermis and dermis were grown on a nude host, the abnormalities in the sebaceous glands and the catagen and telogen follicles were only observed in the recombinants incorporating abJ / abJ epidermis. It was concluded that mutant activity in the epidermis was responsible for the abnormalities in the sebaceous glands and in catagen and telogen follicles and that mutant activity at some site distant from the skin was responsible for the abnormalities in the timing of the hair cycles.

We report the results of our project devoted to study the chemical enrichment history of the field population in the Magellanic Clouds using Ca II triplet spectroscopy.

Background. Jacobs and Bovasso reported (Psychological Medicine 2000, 30, 669–678) that maternal death in childhood and chronic severe depression in adulthood were associated with subsequent breast cancer. We have examined the effects of parental loss in childhood and psychiatric disorder in adult life on breast cancer risk using a national birth cohort study.

Method. Eighty-three cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in a study of 2253 women followed from birth to age 59 years. Cox proportional hazards models were used to test whether breast cancer rates were higher in women who experienced parental death and divorce before age 16, psychiatric disorders between 15 and 32 years, symptoms of anxiety and depression at 36 years, or use of antidepressant medication at 31 or 36 years than in women who did not have these experiences.

Results. There was no overall association between parental death, parental divorce or psychiatric disorder and the incidence of breast cancer. There was some evidence that women with more severe psychiatric disorders between the ages of 15 and 32 years were more likely to develop breast cancer early. The interaction between parental divorce and severe psychiatric disorder was non-significant (p=0·1); however, the group who experienced both these events had an increased breast cancer risk compared with those who experienced neither [hazard ratio (HR) 2·64, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1·13–6·19].

Conclusions. Our study does not provide strong support for the hypothesis that early loss or adult psychiatric disorders are associated with breast cancer. A meta-analysis is needed that uses data from all available cohort studies and investigates possible interactive effects on breast cancer risk.

We present VLT-FORS1 color–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) reaching the oldest main-sequence turnoffs for three fields at two galactocentric distances in the Fornax dSph galaxy. We derive the star formation history (SFH) for each field through comparison with synthetic CMDs and show that the main epoch of star formation has extended to more recent epochs toward the center of the galaxy. A small burst of star formation about 2 Gyr ago is a robust feature in the SFH of all fields. It might be related to the shell structure found in Fornax by Coleman et al. (2004), which in turn has been interpreted as the relic of a merger event that occurred in Fornax about 2 Gyr ago.

The issue of public health ethics has received much attention in recent years and is seen as a new field, distinct from medical ethics. Faculty from the University of Virginia, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, Georgetown University, the University of Minnesota, and others received a grant from the Greenwall Foundation to examine this new field of public health ethics and identify the unique principles that distinguish it from the study of medical ethics. In the course of that study, which included exploring the field with public health practitioners, a number of distinguishing ethical principles emerged. The moral principles appropriate for public health officials included producing benefits; avoiding, preventing and removing harms; producing a maximum balance of benefits over harms; and distributing benefits and burdens fairly.

A current controlled HTS switch (CCSS) has been fabricated using the Si-YBCO reactive patterning technique. The Si films were deposited on MgO substrates by e-beam evaporation and patterned via a lift-off process. The YBCO films were deposited thereafter by pulsed laser deposition to form micron-sized HTS strip lines with different widths and lengths. A typical line has a normal resistance ranging from 10 Ω to 100 KΩ. A CCSS was constructed using such a HTS line as a resistor in parallel with a load resistor. The operation of CCSS is similar to that of a current divider. Applications of CCSS includes HTS logic gates and circuit breakers.
