Soiled white. Antennal depression, a dot on each ocellus, a pair of large round spots on the vertex, an angular spot behind each eye, the basal angles of the scutellum, the tergum and disc of the pleural pieces, black; the elytra whitish hyaline generally with fuscous nervures. Length about 6 mm.

These notes refer to a small but interesting collection of Hemiptera taken about Lake Temagami in August, 1906, by my friend, Mr. William J. Palmer, of Buffalo. Before starting for a brief vacation trip to northern Ontario, Mr. Palmer very kindly offered to collect Hemiptera for me as time and circumstances would permit. On four days only was he able to do any collecting, but considering the unfavourable conditions, the results were remarkably good, both as to the amount and character of the material brought home.

Gnathodus impictus, n. sp.

Green, or yellow greein in the dried specimen; scutellum and all beneath quite strongly tinged with yellow. Corium whitish hyaline, nervures green and strong, especially in the male. Wings white, iridescent, nervures pale. Eyes balckish. Anetnnæ and legs soilded yellow tinged with green, especially on the posterior tibiæ. Otherwise immaculate.

The small group of Homopterous insects included by Fabricius in his genus Derbe, but now separated as a sub-family from the other Fulgoridæ under the name of Derboides Spinola or Derbida, Stal have always been objects of interest to students of this order, partly on accoutn of their delicate from and peculiar strutcure, but their almos universal rarity has doubtless added much to their atractiveness.

This list is presented as a slight contribution to our knowledge of the geographical distribution of the North American Hemiptera. As our literature of this order is by no means overburdened with faunal lists, I trust that the present will find sufficient excuse for its appearance in the mater it contains. I have made every effort to have the list as accurate and complete as possible, under the circumstances. The material was accumulated during brief collecting tour in the Muskoka Lake District of Canada, in the interval from July 25th of August 3rd, 1888.

1. Amalopota Fitchi, n. sp.

Closely allied to A. Uhleri. Smaller; elytra smoky, about twice banded with white; nervures carmine, ocelli apparently wanting. Length, 6 mm.

Male: Vertex shorter and broader posteriorly than in Uhleri, hind margin very feebly emarginate, apex of the pronotum not advanced beyond the base of the lateral keels; frontal keel, viewed from the side, broader and more strongly rounded, with a more conspicuous notch at the base of the clypeus than in Uhleri.

1. Athysanus Anthracinus, n. sp.

Head shorter and more rounded before than in plutonius, closely punctured. Vertex ⅓ longer on the middle than next the eye, sloping and strongly rounded to the base of the front, median carina very feeble; ocelli and two dots on the hind margin fulvous.

Male: From of Th.quadrinotata, Fab., but with the vertex shorter and more depressed. Greenish-yellow; head yellow with a transverse black band on the anterior edge; body black the segments edged with yellow. Length 4½ mm.

Head rounded before, very little longer at the middle than next the eye. Vertex a little depressed, anterior edge subacute; apex of the front two-thirds the width of the base, sides nearly parallel below the antennæ. Clypeus strongly widened apically where the width is but slightly less than the length, edge of the cheek rectilinear either side of the prominent lateral angle. Pronotum rather long, hind edge but moderately concave, the angles obvious.

1. Idiocerus Amœmus, n. sp.

Allied to I. suturalis, but smaller. Female of a uniform pale yellow colour, pronotum and scutellum tin gedwith fulvous or ferruginous, the former with a spot behind the inner angle of each eye and a median vitta, pale. Mesonotum with a black band bordering the scutellum, at least posteriorly; extreme tip of scutellum yellow. Elytra hyaline very slightly tinged with fulvous, becoming smoky toward the apex; nervures pale yellow. Wings hyaline, highly iridescent. Eyes rufous. Oviduct ferruginous.

Lamenia Californica, n. sp.

Form and size of L. vulgaris. Black, shining, densely pruinose; head, pectoral pieces, and legs fulvos. Length, 4 mm.

Front but little wider across the middle than next the vertex. Head fulvous, tinged with brown on the vertex, apex of the clypeus, margins of the cheeks, and on the front each side of the central carina. Eyes dark brown. Pronotum fulvous, more or less embrowned on the disc; propleura, base of the intermediate femora and the claws dusky or blackish.

This pernicious insect has been very abundant here for many years. As early as 1874 I found it in considerable numbers among moss on dry, grassy hill-sides at Lancaster, N. Y. This season (1886) it was remarkably abundant in a dry upland hay field near the same locality. I have also taken it at Ridgeway, Ont. Ordinarily the short winged form predominates, but in hot, dry summers, such as those of 1881 and 1886, they mostly acquire fully developed membranes. I find on comparison with a lot of perhaps one hundred fully developed examples from Kansas, that ours are quite uniformly larger and more robust, with longer hairs on the pronotum.

For the last two seasons I have turned my attention more particularly to collecting the Hemiptera; and very naturally became deeply interested in the family of the Phytocoridæ, or Capsidæ, as they are generally called. They are the most distinctively northern family of the Heteroptera, as the Jassidæ are of the Homoptera; but they seem to have been neglected by European as well as American Entomologists, probably because of the variability of the species, and their frail structure which makes them difficult of preservation.

Otiocerus Wolfii, Kirby. A pale specimen of this frail little form was beaten by me from a beech tree September 3, 1888, at Lancaster, N. Y., and Mr. Uhler has kindly sent me a fully colored individual, presumably from Md., taken on the 6th of August. The antennæ in this species are very short, with a single appendage.
