The flow in and around a pair of plumes from sources that are vertically and horizontally offset is investigated. An analytical potential flow model is developed using an adapted version of the Milne–Thomson circle theorem to represent the flow due to adjacent circular and point sinks. This approximates the horizontal section through offset plumes, which have differing radii at the same vertical position. The predictions of this model are compared against Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulations of the same system. These yield time-averaged results and so are particularly suitable for investigating the relatively weak entrainment field. Single and double plume results from RANS are also presented to compare with known results. Good agreement is found between the features in the analytical model and in the numerical solutions including the location of the stagnation point between the two plumes.

High-temperature X-ray diffraction with concurrent gas chromatography (GC) was employed in the study of iron disulfide (FeS2) cathode pellets disassembled from thermal batteries. When FeS2 cathode materials were analyzed in an air environment, reaction of the KCl and LiCl salt phases led to the formation of Li2(SO4) and KFe2S3 phases beginning at ~230 °C. These phases subsequently reacted to generate various forms of potassium iron sulfates in the 280–500 °C range, with the final products resulting in a β-Fe2O3 phase and K2(SO4). Independent simultaneous thermal analysis coupled with mass spectroscopy (MS) augmented the diffraction results and supported the overall picture of FeS2 decomposition. Both gas analysis measurements (i.e. GC and MS) from the independent experiments confirmed the formation of SO2 off-gas species during the breakdown of the FeS2. In contrast, characterization of the same cathode material under inert conditions showed the persistence of the initial FeS2 phase throughout the entire temperature range of analysis.

Ferrites are promising materials for enabling solar-thermochemical cycles. Such cycles utilize solar-thermal energy to reduce the metal oxide, which is then re-oxidized by H2O or CO2, producing H2 or CO, respectively. Mixing ferrites with zirconia or yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) greatly improves their cyclabilities. In order to understand this system, we have studied the behavior of iron oxide/8YSZ (8 mol-% Y2O3 in ZrO2) using in situ X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analyses at temperatures up to 1500 °C and under controlled atmosphere. The solubility of iron oxide in 8YSZ measured by XRD at room temperature was 9.4 mol-% Fe. The solubility increased to at least 10.4 mol-% Fe when heated between 800 and 1000 °C under inert atmosphere. Furthermore iron was found to migrate in and out of the 8YSZ phase as the temperature and oxidation state of the iron changed. In samples containing >9.4 mol-% Fe, stepwise heating to 1400 °C under helium caused reduction of Fe2O3 to Fe3O4 to FeO. Exposure of the FeO-containing material to CO2 at 1100 °C re-oxidized FeO to Fe3O4 with evolution of CO. Thermogravimetric analysis during thermochemical cycling of materials with a range of iron contents showed that samples with mostly dissolved iron utilized a greater proportion of the iron atoms present than did samples possessing a greater fraction of un-dissolved iron oxides.

Forty-two female anorexia nervosa patients, with onset of first illness at 25 or more years of age, are described and compared with 143 patients with onset of first illness between the ages of 15 and 20 years. The data support the view that the older group forms part of the total population of anorexia nervosa patients, but that age exerts a pathoplastic influence on psychopathology and psychosocial stressors. Older patients lost more weight, but did not have significantly higher rates of concurrent mood disorder.
