In 2020, HR 6819 was reported to be a triple system containing the closest black hole to Earth. However, these results were contested, with an alternative explanation of a post-interaction binary suggested. Using new integral field spectroscopic and interferometric data, we have been able to determine the true nature of this exotic source.

FN CMa is visually double with a separation of ~0.6 arcsec. Sixty high-cadence VLT/UVES spectra permit the A and B components to be disentangled, as the relative contribution of each star to the total light entering the spectrograph fluctuates between exposures due to changes in seeing. Component A exhibits rapid line-profile variations, leading us to attribute the photometric variability seen by HIPPARCOS (with a derived P = 0.08866 d) to this component. From a total of 122 archival and new echelle spectra it is shown that component A is an SB1 binary with an orbital period of 117.55 days. The eccentricity of 0.6 may result in tidal modulation of the pulsation(s) of component Aa.

Among the emission-line stars, the classical Be stars known for their extreme properties are remarkable. The Be stars are B-type main sequence stars that have displayed at least once in their life emission lines in their spectrum. Beyond this phenomenological approach some progresses were made on the understanding of this class of stars. With high-technology techniques (interferometry, adaptive optics, multi-objects spectroscopy, spectropolarimetry, high-resolution photometry, etc) from different instruments and space mission such as the VLTI, CHARA, FLAMES, ESPADONS-NARVAL, COROT, MOST, SPITZER, etc, some discoveries were performed allowing to constrain the modeling of the Be stars stellar evolution but also their circumstellar decretion disks. In particular, the confrontation between theory and observations about the effects of the stellar formation and evolution on the main sequence, the metallicity, the magnetic fields, the stellar pulsations, the rotational velocity, and the binarity (including the X-rays binaries) on the Be phenomenon appearance is discussed. The disks observations and the efforts made on their modeling is mentioned. As the life of a star does not finish at the end of the main sequence, we also mention their stellar evolution post main sequence including the gamma-ray bursts. Finally, the different new results and remaining questions about the main physical properties of the Be stars are summarized and possible ways of investigations proposed. The recent and future facilities (XSHOOTER, ALMA, E-ELT, TMT, GMT, JWST, GAIA, etc) and their instruments that may help to improve the knowledge of Be stars are also briefly introduced.

For early type magnetic stars slow, at most moderate rotational velocities have been considered an observational fact. The detection of a multi-kilogauss magnetic field in the B2Vpn star with P ≈ 0.52 d and v sin i ≈ 300 km/s has brought down this narrative. We have obtained more than 100 high-resolution, high-S/N echelle spectra in 2009. These spectra provide the most detailed description of the variability of any He-strong star to date. The circumstellar environment is dominated by a rotationally locked magnetosphere out to several stellar radii, causing hydrogen emission. The photosphere is characterized by surface chemical abundance inhomogeneities, with much stronger amplitudes, at least for helium, than slower rotating stars like σ Ori E. The highly complex rotational line profile modulations of metal lines are probably a consequence the equatorial gravity darkening of HR 7355, and thus may offer an independent measurement of the von Zeipel parameter β.

Identifying seven activities and activity-carrying properties and nine classes of Active OB Stars, the OB Star Activity Matrix is constructed to map the parameter space. On its basis, the occurrence and appearance of the main activities are described as a function of stellar class. Attention is also paid to selected combinations of activities with classes of Active OB Stars. Current issues are identified and suggestions are developed for future work and strategies.

First results of near-IR adaptive optics (AO)-assisted imaging, interferometry, and spectroscopy of this Luminous Blue Variable (LBV) are presented. They suggest that the Pistol Star is at least double. If the association is physical, it would reinforce questions concerning the importance of multiplicity for the formation and evolution of extremely massive stars.

At low metallicity B-type stars rotate faster than at higher metallicity, typically in the SMC. As a consequence, a larger number of fast rotators is expected in the SMC than in the Galaxy, in particular more Be/Oe stars. With the ESO-WFI in its slitless mode, we examined the SMC open clusters and found an occurence of Be stars 3 to 5 times larger than in the Galaxy. The evolution of the angular rotational velocity seems to be the main key on the understanding of the specific behaviour and stellar evolution of such stars at different metallicities. With the results of this WFI study and using observational clues on the SMC WR stars and massive stars, as well as the theoretical indications of long gamma-ray burst progenitors, we identify the low metallicity massive Be and Oe stars as potential LGRB progenitors. Therefore the expected rates and numbers of LGRB are calculated and compared to the observed ones, leading to a good probability that low metallicity Be/Oe stars are actually LGRB progenitors.

Optical and IR spectra, optical to sub-mm photometry, visual imaging polarimetry, and IR high-resolution spectro-interferometry are being used to monitor the new outburst of 28 CMa, which started in 2008 and so far closely resembles previous ones. First modeling based on viscous decretion and focused on constraining the disk viscosity parameter, α, is presented.

At low metallicity, B-type stars show lower loss of mass and, therefore, angular momentum so that it is expected that there are more Be stars in the Magellanic Clouds than in the Milky Way. However, till now, searches for Be stars were only performed in a very small number of open clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. Using the ESO/WFI in its slitless spectroscopic mode, we performed a Hα survey of the Large and Small Magellanic Cloud. Eight million low-resolution spectra centered on Hα were obtained. For their automatic analysis, we developed the ALBUM code. Here, we present the observations, the method to exploit the data and first results for 84 open clusters in the SMC. In particular, cross-correlating our catalogs with OGLE positional and photometric data, we classified more than 4000 stars and were able to find the B and Be stars in them. We show the evolution of the rates of Be stars as functions of area density, metallicity, spectral type, and age.

Spectropolarimetry has a broad spectrum of applications, for which there are mostly no substitute observing techniques. They range from the measurement of the strength and structure of magnetic fields via the detection of scattered light from sources obscured by high-density matter or lost in the glare of a nearby bright object to the possibility of individual corrections to the intrinsic luminosities of far-away Type Ia supernovae - and many more. First reconnaissance projects have succeeded with 10m-class telescopes. But the application and extension of the insights gained require substantially larger telescopes. An ELT would in particular enable studies of the formation of structure (AGNs, $\gamma$-ray bursts) in early phases of the universe. At the large distances an ELT will reach, the spatial resolution of point sources, even though only at a very low level, will eventually beat any interferometer. Low cost, the possibility to exploit also not perfectly photometric nights, and the $D^4$ sensitivity of background-limited observations of point sources to telescope diameter are other strong assets.

Core collapse supernovae (SN) are the final stages of stellar evolution in massive stars during which the central region collapses, forms a neutron star (NS), and the outer layers are ejected. Recent explosion scenarios assumed that the ejection is due to energy deposition by neutrinos into the envelope, but detailed models do not produce powerful explosions. There is new and mounting evidence for an asphericity and, in particular, for axial symmetry in several supernovae which may be hard to reconcile within the spherical picture. This evidence includes the observed high polarization and its variation with time, pulsar kicks, high velocity iron-group and intermediate-mass elements material observed in remnants, direct observations of the debris of SN 1987A, etc. Some of the new evidence is discussed in more detail. To be in agreement with the observations, any successful mechanism must invoke some sort of axial symmetry for the explosion. We consider jet-induced/dominated explosions of core collapse supernovae. Our study is based on detailed 3-d hydrodynamical and radiation transport models. We find that the observations can be explained by low velocity, massive jets which stall well within the SN envelope. Such outflows may be produced by MHD-mechanisms, convective dominated accretion disks on the central object or asymmetric neutrino emissions. Asymmetric density/chemical distributions and, for SN 2002ap, off-center energy depositions have been identified as crucial for the interpretation of the polarization.

If observing time and number of photons are not the limit, it will probably be very difficult to find any Be star or BA supergiant that is not variable. Moreover, there is hardly any major set of observations that is not tempting to explain at least partly in terms of nonradial (g-mode) pulsations. Since a few years ago, such conjectures are also theoretically permissible because improved opacity calculations have established the classical к-mechanism as a viable source of pulsation driving (cf. Pamyatnykh, these proceedings).

Contrary to Be stars, it can for any given BA supergiant nevertheless be arbitrarily difficult to diagnose nonradial pulsations (NRP’s) with certainty because they need to be detected against considerable background ‘noise’ of other physical processes, most of which are related to mass loss and/or rotation. To make things worse, there is some evidence that NRP’s can have some effect on the dynamics of the mass loss. On the other hand, variable and non-spherical winds is the subject of this Colloquium, and this paper is accordingly biased towards the interplay between pulsation and mass loss.

Improved observing and data analysis strategies have initiated a considerable expansion of the empirical knowledge about the pulsations of OB stars. Possible correlations between physical parameters and associated pulsation characteristics are becoming more clearly perceivable. This starts to include the asteroseismologically fundamental areas of g-modes and rapid rotation. The β Cephei instability strip continues to be the only locus where radial pulsations occur (but apparently not in all stars located in that strip). Except for spectral types B8/B9 near the main sequence, where pulsations are hardly detected even at low amplitudes, any major group of stars in the Galaxy that are obviously not candidate pulsators still remains to be identified. However, the incidence and amplitudes of OB star pulsations decrease steeply with metallicity. The behaviour of high-luminosity stars is less often dominated by very few modes. In broad-lined stars the moving-bump phenomenon is more common than low-order line-profile variability. But its relation to nonradial pulsation is not clear. The beating of low-ℓ nonradial pulsation modes that have identical angular mode indices may be the clockwork of the outbursts of at least some Be stars. The physics of this episodic mass loss process remains to be identified.

Two hypotheses have been put forward for the rôle of binarity in Be stars: (1) All Be stars are interacting binaries. (2) Roughly one-half of the observed Be stars are post-mass exchange binaries with compact companions. Contrary to (1), (2) does not attempt to explain also the existence of disks in Be stars. After the spin-up by mass and angular momentum transfer, the B star somehow has to succeed to form and maintain the disk. Since rapid rotation is only necessary but not sufficient for this transformation, the effect of duplicity would merely be to give more stars the opportunity to become a Be star. Model (1) is not nearly realistic as is also underlined by a new spectroscopic survey for cool companions. The verification of (2) on the basis of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey has just begun; but a serious deficiency of white dwarf companions is already apparent. Binarity currently provides no extra clue on the origin of the Be phenomenon.

Line profile–variability (LPV) is very wide–spread among early–type stars. With the exception of inhomogeneous surface abundance distributions associated with magnetic fields, the LPV of bona fide non–magnetic stars is consistent with (often only with) nonradial pulsation (NRP). Peculiar surface chemistry and NRP may even be mutually exclusive, and there are other indications that in spite of the ubiquity of NRPs the distribution of their characterizing parameters in the HRD is far from being uniform. This may be important for uncovering the driving mechanism of NRPs in early–type stars.

Following a summary of the observations which suggest that the outbursts of classical Be stars are caused by nonradial pulsations, properties, implications and requirements of a model based on this notion are evaluated. A preliminary analysis of new observations of μ Cen is presented which for the first time in a Be star reveals two relatively closely spaced non–commensurate periods. Such a result would render implausible speculations that the variability of Be stars is due to corotating surface features.

The observational status of the ubiquitous rapid variability of Be stars is summarized. The most comprehensive interpretation is obtained with a traveling velocity field and associated temperature variations. But neither the available observations nor theoretical predictions presently allow an unambiguous mode determination of these nonradial pulsations. In addition to rapid rotation, an NRP mode of low azimuthal order, m ≈ 2, seems another prerequisite for a B star becoming a Be star. The amplitudes of these modes are variable and have been observed to decrease with some delay after an outburst. For low-order sectorial modes, NRP's therefore have the potential of explaining the three oldest unsolved problems of Be stars: the difference between Be and Bn stars (the latter do not usually have a low-order mode), the episodic component of the mass loss from Be stars, and the equatorial density maximum of their winds. Mechanisms for the transfer of energy to the atmosphere and its transformation into the kinetic energy of an outburst are discussed.

Spectral line profiles are computed for nonradially pulsating CP2 stars. For a range which currently is thought to be typical for these stars, the influence of six parameters on the line profiles is considered: mode order ℓ and degree m, pulsation velocity amplitude, the angle between the rotation and pulsation axis, the angle between the rotation axis and the line-of-sight, and the phase angle of the rotation. In view of the expected low signal-to-noise ratio of observational data it is investigated to what extent easily measurable, simple quantities can still be useful in discriminating between different modes.

Only a decade ago, this talk could have concerned only the β Cephei stars which however populate a much more precisely defined strip in the Hertzsprung-Russel diagram (MED). But recent reconnaissance surveys (Smith 1977; Smith and Penrod 1984; Waelkens and Rufener 1985; Baade, in preparation) show that perhaps only one, if any, sizeable region of the upper HRD is devoid of nonradially pulsating stars. The identification of the driving mechanism is still pending (cf. the parallel talk by Osaki), and apparently our knowledge about the internal structure of OB stars is incomplete. But, turning that argument around, it also is indicative of how much may be learned about OB stars from and through the solution of that fundamental problem. This seismologial potential, the ubiquity of the phenomenon, and the effect, as suggested by recent observations of some stars, of the pulsations on the mass loss of OB stars make the oscillations of OB stars one of the most important problems of current astrophysics. On the observational side, rotationally broadened spectral lines, large amplitudes, comparatively long periods, and high luminosities permit information to be gathered which otherwise is accessible only for the sun.
