The Minnesota Longitudinal Study of Risk and Adaptation (MLSRA) is a landmark prospective, longitudinal study of human development focused on a sample of mothers experiencing poverty and their firstborn children. Although the MLSRA pioneered a number of important topics in the area of social and emotional development, it began with the more specific goal of examining the antecedents of child maltreatment. From that foundation and for more than 40 years, the study has produced a significant body of research on the origins, sequelae, and measurement of childhood abuse and neglect. The principal objectives of this report are to document the early history of the MLSRA and its contributions to the study of child maltreatment and to review and summarize results from the recently updated childhood abuse and neglect coding of the cohort, with particular emphasis on findings related to adult adjustment. While doing so, we highlight key themes and contributions from Dr Dante Cicchetti’s body of research and developmental psychopathology perspective to the MLSRA, a project launched during his tenure as a graduate student at the University of Minnesota.

We assessed whether paternal demographic, anthropometric and clinical factors influence the risk of an infant being born large-for-gestational-age (LGA). We examined the data on 3659 fathers of term offspring (including 662 LGA infants) born to primiparous women from Screening for Pregnancy Endpoints (SCOPE). LGA was defined as birth weight >90th centile as per INTERGROWTH 21st standards, with reference group being infants ⩽90th centile. Associations between paternal factors and likelihood of an LGA infant were examined using univariable and multivariable models. Men who fathered LGA babies were 180 g heavier at birth (P<0.001) and were more likely to have been born macrosomic (P<0.001) than those whose infants were not LGA. Fathers of LGA infants were 2.1 cm taller (P<0.001), 2.8 kg heavier (P<0.001) and had similar body mass index (BMI). In multivariable models, increasing paternal birth weight and height were independently associated with greater odds of having an LGA infant, irrespective of maternal factors. One unit increase in paternal BMI was associated with 2.9% greater odds of having an LGA boy but not girl; however, this association disappeared after adjustment for maternal BMI. There were no associations between paternal demographic factors or clinical history and infant LGA. In conclusion, fathers who were heavier at birth and were taller were more likely to have an LGA infant, but maternal BMI had a dominant influence on LGA.

Bohdanowiczite was first described in 1967 but incomplete data prevented its acceptance as a new mineral at that time. Additional data on the same material now characterize bohdanowiczite as a new species with the formula:

The mineral occurs in intimate intergrowths with clausthalite and wittichenite in polymetallic mineralization at Kletno in Poland. In reflected light bohdanowiczite has a creamy-yellow colour and short polysynthetic twinning is frequently observed. Cell parameters indexed on a hexagonal lattice are a = 4.183±0.008 Å and c = 19.561± 0.016 Å. Pm1 is the most likely space group. The strongest lines of the powder pattern are 2.91(100), 2.03(30), 3.40(20), 6.54(20), 2.09(18), 3.26(18). The calculated density is 7.72 gm/cm3 and the VHN between 63 and 96 kg/mm2.

It is well established that pregnant women are at an increased risk of Plasmodium falciparum infection when compared to non-pregnant individuals and limited epidemiological data suggest Plasmodium vivax risk also increases with pregnancy. The risk of P. falciparum declines with successive pregnancies due to the acquisition of immunity to pregnancy-specific P. falciparum variants. However, despite similar declines in P. vivax risk with successive pregnancies, there is a paucity of evidence P. vivax-specific immunity. Cross-species immunity, as well as immunological and physiological changes that occur during pregnancy may influence the susceptibility to both P. vivax and P. falciparum. The period following delivery, the postpartum period, is relatively understudied and available epidemiological data suggests that it may also be a period of increased risk of infection to Plasmodium spp. Here we review the literature and directly compare and contrast the epidemiology, clinical pathogenesis and immunological features of P. vivax and P. falciparum in pregnancy, with a particular focus on studies performed in areas co-endemic for both species. Furthermore, we review the intriguing epidemiology literature of both P. falciparum and P. vivax postpartum and relate observations to the growing literature pertaining to malaria immunology in the postpartum period.

The paper identifies two major trends in the economic and social history of the last 150 years, and discusses their effect on the actuarial profession. The major economic trend is globalisation, with which is associated specialisation of function. The major social trend is the gradual collectivisation of society. Neither of these trends has developed monotonically. Both have developed in a ratchet-like movement over time. Globalisation is reflected in the overseas expansion of British life assurance companies up to 1914, followed by an extended period of retrenchment before expansion was resumed in the last quarter of the 20th century. The effect of the collectivisation of society on the actuarial profession has been felt most acutely in an intensification of the regulation of financial services.

In the field in India, most eggs of Chilo partellus (Swinh.) hatched in the morning soon after first light. Laboratory experiments show that in continuous light hatching occurs after 250 hour-degrees of development above 12°C from the time at which the head capsule darkens (blackheading). Hatching may be advanced by a lights-on stimulus or retarded by darkness, and these effects account for the extensive hatching at dawn. Hatching is not entrained by a circadian rhythm. The significance of hatching at this time of day is discussed.

Experiments started in 1976, 1977 and 1978 on Clay-with-Flints soil at Rothamsted tested the effects of combinations of eight two-level factors on spring-sown field beans. Factors tested, presence v. absence, were irrigation, nitrogen fertilizer, aldicarb, fonofos (dieldrin in 1976), benomyl to the seed bed, permethrin (fenitrothion in 1976), pirimicarb, benomyl foliar spray (not tested in 1976).

The main pests and diseases present were nematodes of the genus Pratylenchus, the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum, the pea and bean weevil Sitona lineatus, root blackening associated with the fungal genera Pythium and Fusarium, the foliar diseases chocolate spot, Botrytis spp., rust, Uromyces fabae and bean leaf roll virus.

Incidence of these pests and diseases varied between years. Controlling those present increased yield by about 0·7 t grain/ha each year. The difficulty of apportioning this increase to particular pests and diseases is discussed.

Irrigation increased total dry-matter production and grain yield in 1976 and 1978 but only total dry-matter production in 1977, when grain yield was lost because of lodging. Nitrogen fertilizer had little or no effect.

The most favourable combinations of treatments gave yields of 3·4, 5·0 and 6·4 t grain/ha in the 3 years respectively. Small yields in 1976, despite irrigation, were attributed to premature senescence caused by exceptionally high temperatures. It is suggested that with good control of pests and diseases yields of at least 5 t/ha should be attainable on Clay-with-Flints soil without irrigation in years of average temperature and rainfall and yields in excess of 6 t/ha when the soil-moisture deficit is lessened by either above-average rainfall or irrigation.

Treatments applied to the beans had little or no effect on two following crops of winter wheat.

Emission-line observations made with the Spitzer Space Telescope are used to test the predicted ionizing spectral energy distributions of various stellar atmosphere models.

Carbon Nitride (CNX) films have been grown by ion-assisted pulsed-laser deposition (IAPLD). Graphite targets were laser ablated while bombarding the substrate with ions from a broad-beam Kaufman-type ion source. the ion voltage, current density, substrate temperature, and feed gas composition (N2 in ar) have been varied. the resultant films were characterized by Raman, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and Rutherford back scattering (RBS) spectroscopy.

Samples with -30% N/C ratio have been fabricated. the corresponding Raman and FTIR spectra indicate that nitrogen is incorporated into the samples by insertion into sp2-bonded structures. a low level of C=N triple bonds is also found. as the ion current and voltage are increased with a pure ar ion beam, Raman peaks associated with nanocrystalline graphite appear in the spectr A. adding low levels of nitrogen to the ion beam first reduces the Raman intensity in the vicinity of the graphite disorder peak without adding detectable amounts of nitrogen to the films (as measured by RBS). at higher nitrogen levels in the ion beam, significant amounts of nitrogen are incorporated into the samples, and the magnitude of the "disorder" peak increases. by increasing the temperature of the substrate during deposition, the broad peak due mainly to sp2-bonded C-N in the FTIR spectra is shifted to lower wavenumber. This could be interpreted as evidence of single-bonded C-N; however, it is more likely that the character of the sp2 bonding is changing.

We are studying carbon thin films by using a pulsed excimer laser to ablate pyrolytic graphite targets to form highly tetrahedral coordinated amorphous carbon (at-C) films. These films have been grown on room temperature p-type Si (100) substrates without the intentional incorporation of hydrogen. In order to understand and optimize the growth of at-C films, parametric studies of the growth parameters have been performed. We have also introduced various background gases (H2, N2 and Ar) and varied the background gas pressure during deposition. The residual compressive stress levels in the films have been measured and correlated to changes in the Raman spectra of the at-C band near 1565 cm−1. The residual compressive stress falls with gas pressure, indicating a decreasing atomic sp3-bonded carbon fraction. We find that reactive gases such as hydrogen and nitrogen significantly alter the Raman spectra at higher pressures. These effects are due to a combination of chemical incorporation of nitrogen and hydrogen into the film as well as collisional cooling of the ablation plume. In contrast, films grown in non-reactive Ar background gases show much less dramatic changes in the Raman spectra at similar pressures.

Highly tetrahedral-coordinated-amorphous-carbon (a-tC) films deposited by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) on silicon substrates are studied. These films are grown at room-temperatures in a high-vacuum ambient. a-tC films grown in this manner have demonstrated stability to temperatures in excess of T = 1000°C, more than sufficient for any post-processing treatment or application. Film surfaces are optically smooth as determined both visually and by atomic-force microscopy. PLD growth parameters can be controlled to produce films with a range of sp2 - sp3 carbon-carbon bond ratios. Films with the highest yield of sp3 C-C bonds have high resistivity, with a dielectric permittivity constant s σ 4, measured capacitively at low frequencies (1 – 100 kHz). These a-tC films are p-type semiconductors as grown. Schottky barrier diode structures have been fabricated.
