In this work, we present experimental results on the behavior of liquid water at megabar pressure. The experiment was performed using the HIPER (High-Intensity Plasma Experimental Research) laser facility, a uniaxial irradiation chamber of GEKKO XII (GXII) at the Institute of Laser Engineering (ILE), and the PHELIX at GSI (GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research), a single-beam high-power laser facility, to launch a planar shock into solid multilayered water samples. Equation-of-state data of water (H2O are obtained in the pressure range 0.50–4.6 Mbar by tuning the laser-drive parameters. The Hugoniot parameters (pressure, density, etc.) and the shock temperature were simultaneously determined by using VISAR and SOP as diagnostic tools and quartz as the standard material for impedance mismatch experiments. Finally, our experimental results are compared with hydrodynamic simulations tested with different equations of state, showing good compatibility with tabulated SESAME tables for water.

This report is on the synthesis by electrospinning of multiferroic core-shell nanofibers of strontium hexaferrite and lead zirconate titanate or barium titanate and studies on magneto-electric (ME) coupling. Fibers with well-defined core–shell structures showed the order parameters in agreement with values for nanostructures. The strength of ME coupling measured by the magnetic field-induced polarization showed the fractional change in the remnant polarization as high as 21%. The ME voltage coefficient in H-assembled films showed the strong ME response for the zero magnetic bias field. Follow-up studies and potential avenues for enhancing the strength of ME coupling in the core–shell nanofibers are discussed.

Laser–plasma interaction (LPI) at intensities $10^{15}{-}10^{16}~\text{W}\cdot \text{cm}^{-2}$ is dominated by parametric instabilities which can be responsible for a significant amount of non-collisional absorption and generate large fluxes of high-energy nonthermal electrons. Such a regime is of paramount importance for inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and in particular for the shock ignition scheme. In this paper we report on an experiment carried out at the Prague Asterix Laser System (PALS) facility to investigate the extent and time history of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and two-plasmon decay (TPD) instabilities, driven by the interaction of an infrared laser pulse at an intensity ${\sim}1.2\times 10^{16}~\text{W}\cdot \text{cm}^{-2}$ with a ${\sim}100~\unicode[STIX]{x03BC}\text{m}$ scalelength plasma produced from irradiation of a flat plastic target. The laser pulse duration (300 ps) and the high value of plasma temperature (${\sim}4~\text{keV}$) expected from hydrodynamic simulations make these results interesting for a deeper understanding of LPI in shock ignition conditions. Experimental results show that absolute TPD/SRS, driven at a quarter of the critical density, and convective SRS, driven at lower plasma densities, are well separated in time, with absolute instabilities driven at early times of interaction and convective backward SRS emerging at the laser peak and persisting all over the tail of the pulse. Side-scattering SRS, driven at low plasma densities, is also clearly observed. Experimental results are compared to fully kinetic large-scale, two-dimensional simulations. Particle-in-cell results, beyond reproducing the framework delineated by the experimental measurements, reveal the importance of filamentation instability in ruling the onset of SRS and stimulated Brillouin scattering instabilities and confirm the crucial role of collisionless absorption in the LPI energy balance.

The influence of a strong external magnetic field on the collimation of a high Mach number plasma flow and its collision with a solid obstacle is investigated experimentally and numerically. The laser irradiation ( $I\sim 2\times 10^{14}~\text{W}\cdot \text{cm}^{-2}$ ) of a multilayer target generates a shock wave that produces a rear side plasma expanding flow. Immersed in a homogeneous 10 T external magnetic field, this plasma flow propagates in vacuum and impacts an obstacle located a few mm from the main target. A reverse shock is then formed with typical velocities of the order of 15–20 $\pm$ 5 km/s. The experimental results are compared with 2D radiative magnetohydrodynamic simulations using the FLASH code. This platform allows investigating the dynamics of reverse shock, mimicking the processes occurring in a cataclysmic variable of polar type.

This article considers the interaction of a rising bubble and a sedimenting fine particle in an incompressible viscous liquid under vibrations (ultrasound). The particle is subject to Stokes, Basset and buoyancy forces, and average force due to the inhomogeneity of the pulsating field. It is shown that the main contribution to the average force is made by interference of the external field and the field caused by the monopole mode of bubble oscillations. The interaction force is the attraction of the particle to the bubble. It is found that even weak vibrations lead to considerable increase of the effective cross-section of particle capture by the bubble. The evaluation of the efficiency of the flotation process exposed to an ultrasound action is discussed.

The existence of coronal plasmoids has been postulated for many years in order to supply material to streamers and possibly to the solar wind (SW). The W-L SoHO C2 Lasco coronagraph observations were made under the 2.2 solar radii (R0) occulting disk to look at the ultimate sources of the SW; EUV imagers are preferably devoted to the analysis of the corona on and very near the solar disk. Here, in addition to eclipse white-light (W-L) snapshots, we used the new SWAP space-borne imager designed for the systematic survey of coronal activity in the EUV lines near 17.4 nm, over a field of view (FOV) up to 2 R0. Using summed and co-aligned images, the corona can then be evaluated for the 1st time up to the limit of this FOV. At the time of the July 11, 2010, solar total eclipse a 20h continuous run of observations was collected, including images taken during eclipse totality from several ground observing locations where W-L data were collected. When a horizontal force is applied locally to some volume of a viscous densitystratified fluid, flows with high concentration of vertically oriented vorticity (vortex dipoles) are generated. The processes of generation and evolution with time of these unsteady flows in a stratified fluid are studied. A convenient way to produce and study these flows in the laboratory is to use a submerged horizontal jet as a ‘point’ source of momentum. The main governing parameter (the ‘force’) is easily controlled in this case. Two regimes were studied: starting jets with dipolar vortex fronts (the force acts continuously) and impulsive vortex dipoles (the force acts for a short period of time). A conductivity microprobe, aluminium powder, shadowgraph, thymol-blue and other techniques have been used to measure the velocity and density distributions in the flows. It is found that in both regimes the flows are self-similar: the lengthscale of the flows increases with time as t½ for starting jets and as t1/3 for vortex dipoles. Detailed information about the generation mechanism, kinematics and dynamics of the flows is obtained. On the basis of similarity principles a theoretical explanation of the experimental results is given. The theory is in good agreement with the results obtained.

Geometry of the polar magnetic field is changing during the activity cycle. Tangents to polar ray structures are usually crossed near some point below the surface. This point can be named as a “magnetic focus”. The distance $q$ between the focus and the center of the solar disk changes from the maximum value about 0.7 $R_\odot$ at solar minimum activity to the minimum value about 0.5 $R_\odot$ at solar maximum. This behavior has not been understood till now. Really, all tangents to field lines near the pole of the axially symmetric potential magnetic field described by zonal spherical harmonics cross at the same point. However, the greater is the number of a harmonic, the closer to the surface is the crossing point. As far as at activity maximum high harmonics dominate, the behavior of the focuses seems to be in contradiction with the results of the harmonic analysis. A mechanism responsible for directed transport and molecular separation in a symmetric channel is proposed. We found that under the action of spatial harmonic oscillations of the channel, the system exhibits a directed transport in either direction, presenting multiple current reversals as the amplitude and/or frequency of the oscillations are varied. The particles of different masses may be forced to move with different velocities in the same or in the opposite directions by properly adjusting driving parameters. The directed transport can be produced in both directions even in the absence of thermal noise, the latter can speed up or slow down the transport depending on the system parameters.
