Over the last 25 years, radiowave detection of neutrino-generated signals, using cold polar ice as the neutrino target, has emerged as perhaps the most promising technique for detection of extragalactic ultra-high energy neutrinos (corresponding to neutrino energies in excess of 0.01 Joules, or 1017 electron volts). During the summer of 2021 and in tandem with the initial deployment of the Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland (RNO-G), we conducted radioglaciological measurements at Summit Station, Greenland to refine our understanding of the ice target. We report the result of one such measurement, the radio-frequency electric field attenuation length $L_\alpha$. We find an approximately linear dependence of $L_\alpha$ on frequency with the best fit of the average field attenuation for the upper 1500 m of ice: $\langle L_\alpha \rangle = ( ( 1154 \pm 121) - ( 0.81 \pm 0.14) \, ( \nu /{\rm MHz}) ) \,{\rm m}$ for frequencies ν ∈ [145 − 350] MHz.

The Askaryan Radio Array (ARA) experiment at the South Pole is designed to detect high-energy neutrinos which, via in-ice interactions, produce coherent radiation at frequencies up to 1000 MHz. Characterization of ice birefringence, and its effect upon wave polarization, is proposed to enable range estimation to a neutrino interaction and hence aid in neutrino energy reconstruction. Using radio transmitter calibration sources, the ARA collaboration recently measured polarization-dependent time delay variations and reported significant time delays for trajectories perpendicular to ice flow, but not parallel. To explain these observations, and assess the capability for range estimation, we use fabric data from the SPICE ice core to model ice birefringence and construct a bounding radio propagation model that predicts polarization time delays. We compare the model with new data from December 2018 and demonstrate that the measurements are consistent with the prevailing horizontal crystallographic axis aligned near-perpendicular to ice flow. The study supports the notion that range estimation can be performed for near flow-perpendicular trajectories, although tighter constraints on fabric orientation are desirable for improving the accuracy of estimates.

The general approach to the problem of the real structure of smectites requires an analysis based on the relationship between structural characteristics and diffraction patterns. This paper, which considers only the models corresponding to dioctahedral smectites saturated by K-cations and collapsed, includes: 1. Successive consideration of all models which are crystallochemically possible. These models may differ in (i) the structure and chemical composition of layers and interlayer spaces; (ii) the azimuthal orientations, translations and the mode of alternation of the layers; (iii) independent parameters which describe quantitatively the models (e.g. abundance of each type of layer, probability parameters defining the succession of layers, …). 2. Calculation, in all accessible domains of reciprocal space, of the distribution of intensities and profile variations, obtained by changing only one parameter at a time, that defines one type of structural feature (e.g. cation distribution in individual layers, stacking of the layers, nature of stacking faults, …). 3. A systematical analysis of the calculated diffraction patterns to establish the diffraction criteria which will help to interpret the experimental data explicitly.

Iron-rich dioctahedral 2:1 clays were sampled in metalliferous sediments from Atlantis II Deep (Red Sea), and studied by XRD, TEM, FTIR and Mössbauer spectroscopy. One sample with the structural formula (Si3·94Fe3+0·06)(Fe3+1·90Mg0·10)K0·1(Mg, Ca)0·03 is closer to the theoretical end-member ferripyrophyllite Si4Fe3+2O10(OH)2 than any other Fe-rich clay previously described. Other samples appear as mixed-layered clays: ferripyrophyllite-hydroferripyrophyllite or hydroferripyrophyllite-celadonite.

A trioctahedral, ferrous smectite has been located in the uppermost deposits of Atlantis II Deep, SW basin, Red Sea. This clay is very unstable when removed from its environment of formation and, for example, oxidizes during desiccation under laboratory conditions. Only X-ray transmission diffraction study of the mud itself demonstrates the trioctahedral character of the clay. Electron-optical investigation shows that oxidation within the octahedral sheet creates a juxtaposition of dioctahedral and trioctahedral sub-lattices in the same particle. Ferrous smectite authigenesis is located near the hydrothermal spring outlets of the Atlantis II Deep.

We have determined the in situ electric field attenuation length Lα (defined as the length over which the signal amplitude diminishes by a factor 1/e) for radio-frequency signals broadcast vertically through South Polar ice and reflected off the underlying bed. Conservatively assuming a bedrock field reflectivity for f = 380 MHz, and T = –50°C; the errors incorporate uncertainties in R. This value is consistent with previous estimates that the radiofrequency attenuation length exceeds the attenuation length at optical frequencies by an order of magnitude.

Strained Silicon On Insulator wafers are today envisioned as a natural and powerfulenhancement to standard SOI and/or bulk-like strained Si layers. For MOSFETs applications, thisnew technology potentially combines enhanced devices scalability allowed by thin films andenhanced electron and hole mobility in strained silicon. This paper is intended to demonstrate byexperimental results how a layer transfer technique such as the Smart Cut™ technology can be usedto obtain good quality tensile Strained Silicon On insulator wafers. Detailed experiments andcharacterizations will be used to characterize these engineered substrates and show that they arecompatible with the applications.

Patients with a clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease were studied using MRI, SPECT, and psychometric tests. Significant correlations between focal perfusion deficits and focal cognitive deficits were found. Significant correlations between regional relaxation time of white matter and psychometric tests of diffuse and focal categories were also found. Pathological examination confirmed Alzheimer's disease as the only diagnosis.

The validity of premorbid IQ estimates provided by the National Adult Reading Test (NART) and Vocabulary sub-test of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale were evaluated, by comparison with matched, healthy control subjects, in Korsakoff psychosis, alcoholic dementia, dementia Alzheimer type (DAT), multi-infarct dementia (MID), Huntington's disease, and closed head injury (CHI). There was no significant difference in NART performance between control subjects and the alcoholic dementia, DAT, MID, and CHI groups. Although there appeared to be a decline in NART performance in the Korsakoff and Huntington's groups, it did provide a significantly higher IQ estimate than the Vocabulary sub-test. All clinical groups, with the exception of the CHI group, performed at a significantly lower level than the control group on the Vocabulary sub-test.

Interviews were conducted with the co-resident supporters of 79 elderly subjects. Forty of these elderly subjects had been diagnosed as being demented (20 mildly, 12 moderately and eight severely) following psychiatric assessment. The supporters were screened for psychological well-being with the 60-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) and the Relatives' Stress Scale (RSS). Supporters of demented relatives showed significantly raised levels of stress on the RSS, but no increase in psychiatric morbidity on the GHQ, when compared with the supporters of non-demented relatives. The implications of these findings are discussed.
