The Andromeda galaxy (M 31) has experienced a tumultuous merger history as evidenced by the many substructures present in its inner halo. We use planetary nebulae (PNe) as chemodynamic tracers to shed light on the recent merger history of M 31. We identify the older dynamically hotter thicker disc in M 31 and a distinct younger dynamically colder thin disc. The two discs are also chemically distinct with the PN chemodynamics implying their formation in a ‘wet’ major merger (mass ratio ∼ 1:5) ∼ 2.5–4.5 Gyr ago. From comparison of PN line-of-sight velocities in the inner halo substructures with predictions of a major-merger model in M 31, we find that the same merger event that formed the M 31 thick and thin disc is also responsible for forming these substructures. We thereby obtain constraints on the recent formation history of M 31 and the properties of its cannibalized satellite.

Thanks to the long-term collaborations between nuclear and astrophysics, we have good understanding on the origin of elements in the universe, except for the elements around Ti and some neutron-capture elements. From the comparison between observations of nearby stars and Galactic chemical evolution models, a rapid neutron-capture process associated with core-collapse supernovae is required. The production of C, N, F and some minor isotopes depends on the rotation of massive stars, and the observations of distant galaxies with ALMA indicate rapid cosmic enrichment. It might be hard to find very metal-poor or Population III (and dust-free) galaxies at very high redshifts even with JWST.

In recent years, the discovery of massive quasars at $z\sim7$ has provided a striking challenge to our understanding of the origin and growth of supermassive black holes in the early Universe. Mounting observational and theoretical evidence indicates the viability of massive seeds, formed by the collapse of supermassive stars, as a progenitor model for such early, massive accreting black holes. Although considerable progress has been made in our theoretical understanding, many questions remain regarding how (and how often) such objects may form, how they live and die, and how next generation observatories may yield new insight into the origin of these primordial titans. This review focusses on our present understanding of this remarkable formation scenario, based on the discussions held at the Monash Prato Centre from November 20 to 24, 2017, during the workshop ‘Titans of the Early Universe: The Origin of the First Supermassive Black Holes’.

Cosmological chemodynamical simulations are nowadays among the best tools to study how chemical elements are produced within galaxies, to reconstruct also the spatial distribution of the chemical elements as a function of time within different galaxy environments. Our simulation code includes the main stellar nucleosynthetic sources in the cosmos (core-collapse and Type Ia supernovae, hypernovae, asymptotic giant branch stars, and stellar winds from stars of all masses and metallicities). We present the predictions of our simulation for the evolution of the radial gradients of O/H, N/O and C/N in the gas-phase of a sample of ten star-forming disc galaxies, all characterised by very different star formation histories at the present time (see Figure 1.). On average, our simulated disc galaxies show a clear inside-out growth of the stellar mass as a function of time, and more negative slopes of the radial gas-phase O/H versus radius at earlier epochs of the galaxy evolution; we predict negative slopes of N/O and positive slopes of C/N at almost all redshifts, because of the main secondary origin of N in stars, even though the high-redshift simulation data are highly scattered because of the more turbulent conditions of the interstellar medium. Finally, we show that similar results are found with zoom-in simulations, where a spiral galaxy is re-simulated with a larger number of resolution elements. With zoom-in simulations, we study how stellar migrations (particularly old and metal-poor stellar populations migrating outwards) and radial gas flows are capable of influencing the galaxy chemical evolution at different galactic radii.

Nitrogen is among the most abundant chemical elements in the cosmos, and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are fundamental nucleosynthetic sources of N in galaxies. In this work, we show how the observed N/O versus O/H chemical abundance diagram, both in extragalactic systems and in our own Galaxy, can be used to constrain the nucleosynthetic origin of N in the cosmos. In particular, we review the results of our studies with chemical evolution models, embedded in full cosmological chemodynamical simulations.

The role of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in chemical enrichment is significant for producing 12,13C, 14N, F, 25,26Mg, 17O and slow neutron-capture process (s-process) elements. The contribution from super-AGB stars is negligible in classical, one-zone chemical evolution models, but the mass ranges can be constrained through the contribution from electron-capture supernovae and possibly hybrid C+O+Ne white dwarfs, if they explode as Type Iax supernovae. In addition to the recent s-process yields of AGB stars, we include various sites for rapid neutron-capture processes (r-processes) in our chemodynamical simulations of a Milky Way type galaxy. We find that neither electron-capture supernovae or neutrino-driven winds are able to adequately produce heavy neutron-capture elements such as Eu in quantities to match observations. Both neutron-star mergers (NSMs) and magneto-rotational supernovae (MRSNe) are able to produce these elements in sufficient quantities. Using the distribution in [Eu/(Fe, α)] – [Fe/H], we predict that NSMs alone are unable to explain the observed Eu abundances, but may be able to together with MRSNe. In order to discuss the role of long-lifetime sources such as NSMs and AGB stars at the early stages of galaxy formation, it is necessary to use a model that can treat inhomogeneous chemical enrichment, such as in our chemodynamical simulations. In our cosmological, chemodynamical simulations, we succeed in reproducing the observed N/O-O/H relations both for global properties of galaxies and for local inter-stellar medium within galaxies, without rotation of stars. We also predict the evolution of CNO abundances of disk galaxies, from which it will be possible to constrain the star formation histories.

The gender† dimension of science and technology has become one of the most important and debated issues worldwide, impacting society at every level. A variety of international initiatives on the subject have been undertaken, including the continued monitoring of the status of women in science by Unesco Institute for Statistics (UIS) or the annual reports “Education at a Glance” by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) as well as field-related working groups and networking in order to collect data in a consistent manner. The majority of the international organizations have made clear statements about their discrimination policies (independently of their main field(s) of action), including the International Council for Science whose regulations are followed by the IAU. Gender equality at large is one of the eight United Nations Millennium Development Goals, which clearly calls for action related to science, technology and gender.

We reviewed chemical evolution of galaxies using our cosmological simulations.

In a galaxy, chemical enrichment takes place in an inhomogeneous fashion, and the Galactic Halo is one of the places where the inhomogeneous effects are imprinted and can be constrained from observations. I show this using my chemodynamical simulations of Milky Way type galaxies. The scatter in the elemental abundances originate from radial migration, merging/accretion of satellite galaxies, local variation of star formation and chemical enrichment, and intrinsic variation of nucleosynthesis yields. In the simulated galaxies, there is no strong age-metallicity relation. This means that the most metal-poor stars are not always the oldest stars, and can be formed in chemically unevolved clouds at later times. The long-lifetime sources of chemical enrichment such as asymptotic giant branch stars or neutron star mergers can contribute at low metallicities. The intrinsic variation of yields are important in the early Universe or metal-poor systems such as in the Galactic halo. The carbon enhancement of extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars can be best explained by faint supernovae, the low [α/Fe] ratios in some EMP stars naturally arise from low-mass (~ 13 - 15M⊙) supernovae, and finally, the [α/Fe] knee in dwarf spheroidal galaxies can be produced by subclasses of Type Ia supernovae such as SN 2002cx-like objects and sub-Chandrasekhar mass explosions.

In our cosmological, chemodynamical simulations, (i) the black hole mass–velocity dispersion relation does not evolve, and black holes actually grow along the relation. (ii) the stellar mass–metallicity relation does not change its shape, while the gas-phase relation has a steeper slope at higher redshifts. (iii) While stellar metallicity gradients are made shallower by galaxy mergers, gas-phase gradients are affected more strongly by AGN feedback.

The predictions of our chemodynamical simulations from cosmological initial conditions are as follows: The disk formed Inside-out. Metallicity radial and vertical gradients exist, but no [α/Fe] radial gradient. Metallicity radial gradient is steeper at higher redshifts. The [α/Fe]-[Fe/H] relation is caused by the delayed enrichment of Type Ia supernovae (not with long lifetimes, but with the metallicity effect). The bulge formed through the assembly of small gas-rich galaxies at high redshifts. [α/Fe] is higher, [Mn/Fe] is lower, [(Na, Al)/Fe] are higher than the disk. Metallicity and [α/Fe] vertical gradients exist, which is caused by the increase of metal-rich and low [α/Fe] populations at lower latitudes. Bars may form later, which may show boxy and cylindrical rotation. Half of thick disk stars (kinetically selected) come from minor mergers. [α/Fe] is higher, and [Mn/Fe] is lower than the thin disk, but [(Na, Al, Cu, Zn)/Fe] are lower than the bulge. There are metallicity vertical, weak metallicity radial, and no [α/Fe] radial gradients. It would be interesting to compare the predictions with other models such as radial mixing, disk heating, and clumpy disks.

For the solar neighborhood, the frequency distributions of elements from oxygen to zinc are in excellent agreement not only for the average values but also for the scatter. In chemodynamical simulations, chemical enrichment takes place inhomogeneously, and the scatter originates from a combination of various effects - mergers, migration, and in-situ. The inhomogeneous enrichment is important in reproducing observed nitrogen abundances, and also in understanding elemental abundance patterns of dwarf spheroidal galaxies and carbon-enhanced damped Lyman α systems.

We simulate the chemodynamical evolution of a hundred elliptical galaxies using our GRAPE-SPH code, and succeed in reproducing the radial metallicity gradients and the global scaling relations such as the fundamental plane. These observations cannot be explained by either monolithic collapse or by major merger alone. Rather it requires a model in which both formation processes arise, such as the present CDM scheme.

We have measured Fundamental Plane (FP) parameters in the 2MASS J, H and K passbands for 10,000 ellipticals, lenticulars and early-type spiral bulges in the 6dF Galaxy Survey (6dFGS) – a spectroscopic survey of the southern sky with |b| > 10° (Jones et al. 2009). 6dFGS provides a large near-infrared-selected sample of galaxies for accurately determining the NIR FP and investigating the trends in the FP with stellar population, morphology and environment.

For the formation of elliptical galaxies, two scenarios, monolithic collapse vs. major merger, have been debated. We simulate the formation and chemodynamical evolution of 128 Es from the CDM initial fluctuations, using the GRAPE-SPH code that include star formation, supernovae feedback, and chemical enrichment. In our CDM-based scenario, galaxies form through the successive merging of subgalaxies with various masses.

We simulate the formation and evolution of galaxies with a self-consistent 3D hydrodynamical model including star formation, supernova feedback, and chemical enrichment. Hypernova feedback plays an essential role not only in solving the [Zn/Fe] problem, but also reproducing the cosmic star formation rate history and the mass-metallicity relations. In the Milky-Way type galaxy, the star formation history, and thus the kinematics and chemical abundances are different in bulge, disk, and thick disk.

We simulate the chemodynamical evolution of the Milky Way Galaxy, including the nucleosynthesis yields of hypernovae and a new progenitor model for Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia). In our nucleosynthesis yields of core-collapse supernovae, we use light curve and spectral fitting to individual supernovae to estimate the mass of the progenitor, the explosion energy, and the iron mass produced. A large contribution of hypernovae is required from the observed abundance of Zn ([Zn/Fe] ~0). In our progenitor model of SNe Ia, based on the single degenerate scenario, the SN Ia lifetime distribution spans a range of 0.1–20 Gyr with peaks at both ~ 0.1 and 1 Gyr. A metallicity effect from white dwarf winds is required from the observed trends of elemental abundance ratios (i.e., [(α,Mn,Zn)/Fe]-[Fe/H] relations). In our simulated Milky Way-type galaxy, the kinematical and chemical properties of the bulge, disk, and halo are broadly consistent with observations. 80% of the thick disk stars are older than ~8 Gyr and tend to have larger [α/Fe] than in the thin disk.

We simulate the formation and evolution of galaxies with a hydrodynamical model including supernova and hypernova feedback. The hypernova feedback suppress star formation efficiently, which results in the cosmic star formation rate history peaked at z ~ 4. It also drives galactic outflows efficiently in low mass galaxies, and these winds eject heavy elements into the intergalactic medium. The ejected baryon and metal fraction is larger for less massive galaxies, which results in the mass-metallicity relation of galaxies. We also simulate the chemodynamical evolution of the Milky Way Galaxy, and show the difference of the stellar populations in the bulge and disk.

We simulate cosmic chemical enrichment with a hydrodynamical model including supernova and hypernova feedback. We find that the majority of stars in present-day massive galaxies formed in much smaller galaxies at high redshifts, despite their late assembly times. The hypernova feedback drives galactic outflows efficiently in low mass galaxies, and these winds eject heavy elements into the intergalactic medium. The ejected baryon fraction is larger for less massive galaxies, correlates well with stellar metallicity. The observed mass-metallicity relation is well reproduced as a result of the mass-dependent galactic winds.

We provide new nucleosynthesis yields depending on metallicity and energy (i.e., (normal supernovae and hypernovae), and show the evolution of heavy element abundances from C to Zn in the solar neighborhood. We then show the chemodynamical simulation of the Milky Way Galaxy and discuss the G-dwarf problem. We finally show the cosmological simulation and discuss the galaxy formation and chemical enrichment.

We simulate the chemodynamical evolution of the Milky Way using our GRAPE-SPH code, and reproduce the age-metallicity relation, the [O/Fe]-[Fe/H] relation, and the metallicity distribution.
