Introduction: Dementia and cognitive impairment are major causes of admission to Nursing Homes. These conditions also lead to caregiver burden and decrease quality of life. Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) is an evidence-based psychosocial intervention for people with dementia, recommended and implemented in many countries, including Brazil.

Objectives: The aim of the current study is to explore the feasibility and preliminary results of CST protocol in nursing homes for elders with cognitive impairment or dementia in Brazil.

Methods: Older adults with cognitive impairment were invited to participate in this study. Thirteen participants from two nursing homes were assessed at baseline with the Cambridge Cognitive Examination (CAMCOG), Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia (CSDD), Pfeffer Functional Activities Questionnaire, Katz Activities of Daily Living Scale, Quality of Life in Alzheimer’s Disease (Qol-AD) and Clinical Dementia Rating Scale Sum of Boxes (CDR-SOB). They were assigned to Usual Care/Waiting List and followed up for 7 weeks, being reassessed at the end of this period. Then, they underwent 14 CST sessions throughout 7 weeks and were reassessed at the end of the protocol. Repeated Measures ANOVA was selected to assess differences in time. This study was approved by the Ethics committee of the Federal University of Minas Gerais.

Results: There were no dropouts from the study, the CST protocol has shown to be feasible to be implemented in nursing homes. We found that the CST protocol had no statistically significant impact in CDR-SOB (F = 1.21, p = 0.315), CSDD (F = 1.61, p = 0.221), CAMCOG (F = 0.914, p = 0.414), but showed a statistically significant change in the Qol-AD scale (F = 3.618, p = 0.042). However, Mauchly’s test of sphericity is violated, and since it may lead to increased type I error, it is still premature to define a positive outcome.

Conclusions: These preliminary results are consistent with the previous literature, suggesting that the CST could be a useful psychosocial intervention to improve the quality of life of people with dementia living in nursing homes. Nevertheless, more participants need to be enrolled to address further consistent.

The objective of this study is to prospect ISSR primers (Inter Simple Sequence Repeats) and, further genetic characterization in Paratecoma peroba. For this, leaf samples of 20 individuals were collected in a forest fragment, located in a private area, close to the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Espírito Santo, in the city of Alegre, ES, Brazil. For this, 43 ISSR primers were tested, and 10 primers were selected, which provided a total of 91 bands, with 57 polymorphic bands, resulting in 62.63% polymorphism. The polymorphic information content (PIC = 0.27) indicated moderate informativeness of the primers and, therefore, they are efficient in studies with the species. However, the values found for genetic parameters such as the number of observed (AO = 1.68) and effective (AE = 1.41) alleles and, the genetic diversity indices of Nei (H* = 0.23) and Shannon (I* = 0.35) indicate the occurrence of homozygous loci and low genetic diversity in the population. On the other hand, the genetic structure evaluated by the Bayesian approach revealed the formation of three genetic groups distributed in all sampled individuals, inferring once again about the occurrence of loci in homozygosity. Therefore, the connection of neighbouring fragments and the establishment of individuals obtained from other sources could increase the genetic diversity of the population and reduce the possible effects of depression by inbreeding and genetic drift.

This paper aims to analyze how governance and management of strategic networks (SNs) composed of small firms differ according to network size and length of existence. We analyzed 20 Brazilian SNs, comparing oldest to youngest and largest to smallest. The results show that large SNs have a more robust management structure, automated process control system, and centralized strategic decision-making power. Only small and younger SNs are not centralized and lack incentive mechanisms for members. Moreover, older SNs have a centralized strategic formulation and implementation process, whereas younger SNs have a more inclusive and participatory one. The results confirm previous studies and offer a fine-grained comprehension of the governance of SNs according to the number of members. The findings contribute to the nascent network governance theory and offer insights to network managers who have to reconfigure the governance as the number of members grows.

Zinc is an important nutrient involved in cell division, physical growth, and immune system function. Most studies evaluating the nutritional status related to zinc and prematurity were conducted with hospitalized preterm infants. These studies show controversial results regarding the prevalence of deficiency, clinical implications, and the effect of zinc supplementation on mortality, infectious diseases, and growth in these groups. This study aimed to compare serum and erythrocyte zinc levels in a group of preterm and full-term infants after 9 months of age, and related the zinc levels to dietary intake and anthropometric indicators in both groups. This cross-sectional study compared 43 preterm infants (24 to 33 weeks) aged 9–24 months to 47 full-term healthy infants. Outcome measures: anthropometric indicators and dietary intake. Blood sample for serum and erythrocyte zinc levels (ICP-MS, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry). There was no difference between the groups regarding the mean of serum and erythrocyte zinc. Variables associated with higher serum zinc levels were breastfeeding at evaluation (β = 20.11 µg/dL, 95% CI 9.62–30.60, p < 0.001) and the later introduction of solid foods (β = 6.6 µg/dL, 95% CI 5.3–11.4, p < 0.001). Breastfeeding was also associated with higher erythrocyte zinc levels. The zinc levels were adequate in both groups, there was no association with anthropometric indicators or dietary intake and were slightly influenced by breastfeeding and time of solid food introduction.

Understanding how and why exotic species use their habitats is crucial for defining effective conservation strategies. We aimed to investigate habitat use by an exotic population of squirrel monkeys living in an Atlantic Forest fragment and identify factors associated with their habitat preferences. Over 6 months of scan sampling observations, we collected data on native and exotic plants consumed by the squirrel monkeys, food availability, and interactions between the squirrel monkeys and the native common marmosets. We also georeferenced the estimated centroid point of the study group during each scan. Squirrel monkeys used Secondary Old Forest habitats more often than the other habitats available. The consumption of native and exotic plants and the association with common marmoset appear to have influenced the habitat use of the exotic squirrel monkeys; however, the choice habitat did not demonstrate to be associated with food availability. The exotic squirrel monkeys preferred to use less disturbed habitats to consume a high amount of food (often associated with the common marmoset), potentially optimizing their food intake. Our findings demonstrated the adaptive success of an exotic primate in its non-natural habitat and the key role of the plant community in maintaining this population.

Oxidative stress along the gut-kidney axis is a risk factor for developing arterial hypertension in offspring from dams fed a high-fat diet. Considering the antioxidant capacity of probiotic strains, this study evaluated the effects of a daily multistrain formulation with Limosilactobacillus fermentum 139, 263, and 296 on blood pressure (BP), renal function, and oxidative stress and along the gut-kidney axis in male offspring from dams fed a high-fat high-cholesterol (HFHC) diet during pregnancy and lactation. Dams were fed a diet control or HFHC diet during pregnancy and lactation. At 100 days of age, part of the male offspring from dams fed a HFHC diet received Limosilactobacillus fermentum formulation for 4 weeks (HFHC + Lf) daily. After the 4-week intervention, BP (tail-cuff plethysmography) and urinary and biochemical variables were measured. In addition, malondialdehyde levels, enzymatic activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione-S-transferase, and nonenzymatic antioxidant defense (thiols content) were measured in the colon and renal cortex. Male offspring from dams fed a HFHC had increased blood pressure, impaired renal function, and oxidative stress along the gut-kidney axis. Administration of Limosilactobacillus fermentum reduced systolic, diastolic, and mean blood pressure levels and alleviated renal function impairment and oxidative stress along the gut-kidney axis in male offspring from dams fed a HFHC diet. Administration of Limosilactobacillus fermentum formulation attenuated programmed hypertension in the HFHC group through oxidative stress modulation along the gut-kidney axis.

Aetiologic agents of diseases such as malaria and toxoplasmosis are found in representatives of the phylum Apicomplexa. Therefore, apicomplexan parasites are known to have a significant impact on public health. Epigenetic factors such as histone acetylation/deacetylation are among the main mechanisms of gene regulation in these parasites. Histone deacetylases (HDACs) have aroused a great deal of interest over the past 20 years for being promising targets in the development of drugs for treating several diseases such as cancer. In addition, they have also been shown to be effective for parasitic diseases. However, little is known about the structure of these proteins, as well as their interactions with specific ligands. In this paper, we modelled 14 HDACs from different apicomplexan parasites and performed molecular docking with 12 ligands analogous to the HDAC inhibitors FR235222 and apicidin, which had previously been tested against Toxoplasma gondii and Plasmodium falciparum. In this in silico study, we were able to gather relevant structural data regarding these proteins as well as insights into protein–ligand interactions for testing and developing drugs for these diseases.

This work presents the results of the physical characterization of palygorskite and its adsorptive behaviour for three solvatochromic dyes (Nile blue chloride (NBC), methylene blue (MTB) and dithizone (DTZ)). Adsorption isotherms were used to determine the maximum adsorption of the solvatochromic dyes on the palygorskite. The characterization of palygorskite was carried out via mineralogical and chemical analysis with X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, surface-charge measurement (ζ-potential), thermogravimetric analysis, textural analysis and cation-exchange capacity analysis. The material consists of palygorskite and quartz and its chemistry is dominated by SiO2, MgO and Fe2O3. The specific surface area and cation-exchange capacity of the palygorskite are 142 m2 g–1 and 41 cmol(+) kg–1, respectively. The SEM and TEM analyses showed a fibrous structure with fibres 20–100 nm long. The thermogravimetric analysis showed three endothermic events at 57.3°C, 171.8°C and 439.6°C. The adsorption capacities of the palygorskite for NBC (basic pH), MTB (basic pH) and DTZ (neutral pH) were 0.082, 0.013 and 0.102 g g–1, respectively. The adsorptions of NBC and MTB were fitted with the Langmuir isotherm model and the adsorption of DTZ was fitted with the Sips model.

17α-Ethinylestradiol is an endocrine-disrupting chemical that make up most contraceptive pills and can be found in the environment. Exposure to ethinylestradiol in different development periods may promote changes in morphophysiological parameters of reproductive and endocrine organs. Considering that the effects of low doses (15 µg/kg/day) of ethinylestradiol in ovaries from 12-month-old female gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) were investigated. Four experimental groups used were control (without treatment), EE/PRE (treated from the 18th to the 22nd gestational day), EE/PUB (treated from the 42nd to the 49th day of life), and EE/PRE-PUB (treated in the both periods). The animals were euthanized at 12 months. Testosterone and 17β-estradiol levels were measured. The ovaries were stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin, Periodic Acid Schiff, and Gomori’s Trichome. The follicles, corpus luteum, interstitial gland, lipofuscin, ovarian epithelium, and tunica albuginea were analyzed. Estradiol was higher in EE/PRE and EE/PUB groups, while testosterone was higher only in EE/PUB group. The main changes in follicle count occurred in EE/PUB and EE/PRE-PUB groups, with higher primordial follicle count and lower maturation of follicles. The corpus luteum was more evident in EE/PRE group. No differences were found in atretic follicles count. A higher area occupied by interstitial gland cells and lipofuscin deposit in these cells was noted in EE/PUB and EE/PRE-PUB groups. Higher epithelium height and thicker tunic albuginea were showed in treated groups. These results suggest that exposure to doses of EE2 in prenatal and pubertal periods of the development leads to morphological changes in senile ovaries.

Sex selection through sperm sorting offers advantages in regards selection pressure in high-producing livestock. However, the sex-sorting process results in sperm membrane and DNA damage that ultimately decrease fertility. We hypothesized that given the role of protamines in DNA packaging, protamine deficiency could account, at least partially, for the DNA damage observed following sperm sex sorting. To test this, we compared protamine status between unsexed and sexed spermatozoa from two bulls using the fluorochrome chromomycin A3 (CMA3) and flow cytometry. Then, we assessed embryo development following in vitro fertilization (IVF) using the same sperm treatments. Overall, sperm protamination was not different between sexed and unsexed semen. However, one of the two bulls displayed higher rates of protamine deficiency for both unsexed and sexed semen (P < 0.05). Moreover, unsexed semen from this bull yielded lower blastocyst (P < 0.05) and blastocyst hatching rates than unsexed sperm from the other bull. CMA3-positive staining was negatively correlated with cleavage (R2 85.1, P = 0.003) and blastocyst hatching (R2 87.6, P = 0.006) rates in unsexed semen. In conclusion, while the sex-sorting process had no effect on sperm protamine content, we observed a bull effect for sperm protamination, which correlated to embryo development rates following IVF.

Early weaning can lead to changes in the morphology of organs in adulthood, and the consumption of functional foods during lactation and postnatal life is believed to prevent these changes. However, it is not known if early weaning affects testicular morphology and if the use of cocoa can prevent that. We studied the effects of maternal and postnatal supplementation of cocoa powder on the testicular morphology of early weaned adult rats. The animals were divided into four groups (n = 6 each), control group, cocoa control group, early weaning (EW) group, and cocoa early weaning (EWCa) group, and were analyzed for 90 d, after which they were euthanized. The animals from the EW group showed a reduction in the tubular diameter and height of the seminiferous epithelium, a decrease in epithelial surface density (Sv), and an increase in the lumen and proper tunic. However, the animals from the EWCa group showed an increase in the diameter and height of the epithelium, an increase in the epithelium Sv, and a decrease in the lumen and the proper tunic. The early weaning promotes morphological changes in the testicles; however, supplementation with cocoa powder can preserve the testicular histoarchitecture.

There are few reports of cryopreservation and injuries in Macrobrachium amazonicum embryos. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the effects of cryoprotectants agents and cooling on stage VIII of this species. Fertilized eggs from ovigerous females were removed from the incubation chamber, then placed in 10 ml Falcon tubes with a cryoprotectant solution and saline-free calcium solution. Thus, the embryos underwent a cooling curve of 1°C per min until reaching 5°C, and then were stored for 2 h. The tubes containing the embryos were washed to remove the cryoprotectant, acclimated for 5 min and then transferred to 50 ml incubators. At the end of the 24-h period, living embryos from each tube were counted and tabulated. A pool of embryos was fixed with 4% formaldehyde and then subjected to histology using 3-mm thick sections and stained with haematoxylin/eosin. Another pool was used for biometric analysis in which length, width and volume were analyzed. The cryoprotectants agents used were: dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), methyl alcohol, ethylene glycol at 1, 5 and 10% and sucrose (0.5 M). Variance analysis was performed followed by Tukey's honest significant difference (HSD) test at 5% significance level. DMSO cryoprotectant affected embryo survival the least with rates of 71.8, 36.2 and 0% for concentrations of 1, 5 and 10%, respectively. Ethylene glycol caused 100% mortality at all the concentrations used. It was not possible to observe the interference of cooling and cryoprotectants on embryonic structures in this study.

The Saquarema archaeological site, on the Atlantic coast of the Rio de Janeiro State, is one of many shellmounds built on the Brazilian coast by hunter-gatherer populations during the Holocene. We used archaeological material from this site with the aim of evaluating the marine reservoir effect (MRE) in the region. Radiocarbon ages of 45 marine and 6 terrestrial samples from this shellmound provided data for assessing the MRE and the influences of freshwater and seasonal coastal marine upwelling in this specific locality. Samples of charcoal, fish otoliths, and mollusk shells were analyzed and the 14C dates were modeled in the OxCal platform to determine the marine reservoir correction. The result obtained is R = 265 ± 70 14C yr and the offset ΔR was found to be –140 ± 66 14C yr. To support the accuracy of this value for correcting conventional 14C marine ages, taxonomic analyses of the samples were performed.

In this article, the sol-gel methodology was used for coating an acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) polymer prepared by the rapid prototyping technology with a colloid containing the europium III dipicolinic complex, which presents high emission when excited in the ultraviolet region. Either acid or base was used for treatment of the ABS polymer, with a view to activating its surface. The thermal analysis evidenced a residual mass after 600 °C, which indicated that the coating adhered to the substrate. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the structure of the ABS polymer was not affected by the sol-gel treatment. The large band centered at 287 nm, ascribed to ligand-metal charge transfer, can be used to excite the europium III dipicolinic complex in the ultraviolet C and ultraviolet B regions. The emission appears in the characteristic red region of the electromagnetic spectrum. These results indicate that the obtained material is a candidate for use as ultraviolet sensor.

Physical dormancy refers to seeds that are water impermeable. Within the Fabaceae, the structure associated with the breaking of dormancy is usually the lens. This study verified the role of the lens in physical dormancy of seeds of Schizolobium parahyba, a gap species of Fabaceae from the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. The lens in S. parahyba seeds appeared as a subtle depression near the hilum and opposite the micropyle. After treatment of the seeds with hot water, the lens detached from the coat. Blocking water from contacting the lens inhibited water absorption in hot-water-treated seeds. High constant (30°C) and alternating (20/30°C) temperatures promoted the breaking of physical dormancy and germination in non-scarified seeds. Maximum percentage of germination occurred earlier for seeds incubated at 20/30°C than for those incubated at 30°C. Seeds with a blocked lens did not germinate at alternating or high temperatures. This study suggests that alternating temperatures are probably the cause of physical dormancy break of seeds of S. parahyba in gaps in the forest.

The present paper provides the first record of the brachyuran crab species as by-catch from shrimp fishery practices in northern Rio de Janeiro State, south-eastern Brazil (21°30′S–21°50′S). Monthly samples were collected from April 2006 to March 2007 along the coastal fishing ground, from 0 to 4 nautical miles offshore and from 10 to 15 m depth. Eight species and 6833 crab specimens were recorded: Arenaeus cribarius (N = 11), Callinectes ornatus (N = 5613), Cronius rubber (N = 16), Hepatus pudibundus (N = 523), Libinia ferreirae (N = 202), Persephona mediterranea (N = 1), P. punctata (N = 466) and Portunus spinimanus (N = 1). A seasonal pattern of the crabs' occurrence was not found. The catches per unit effort values of C. ornatus were significantly greater than the other crabs and its high number indicates a resident pattern along the coastal fishing ground in the study area. The by-caught specimens of C. ornatus can be used as bait in Balistidae (triggerfish) fishery practice by the local fishermen, but the other crab species are discarded after by-catch.
