Distributional semantic representations were used to investigate crossmodal correspondences within language, offering a comprehensive analysis of how sensory experiences interconnect in linguistic constructs. By computing semantic proximity between words from different sensory modalities, a crossmodal semantic network was constructed, providing a general view of crossmodal correspondences in the English language. Community detection techniques were applied to unveil domains of experience where crossmodal correspondences were likely to manifest, while also considering the role of affective dimensions in shaping these domains. The study revealed the existence of an architecture of structured domains of experience in language, whereby crossmodal correspondences are deeply embedded. The present research highlights the roles of emotion and statistical associations in the organization of sensory concepts across modalities in language. The domains identified, including food, the body, the physical world and emotions/values, underscored the intricate interplay between the senses, emotion and semantic patterns. These findings align with the embodied lexicon hypothesis and the semantic coding hypothesis, emphasizing the capacity of language to capture and reflect crossmodal correspondences’ emotional and perceptual subtleties in the form of networks, while also revealing opportunities for further perceptual research on crossmodal correspondences and multisensory integration.

The recent discovery of an exceptionally rich grave at La Almoloya in south-eastern Spain illuminates the political context of Early Bronze Age El Argar society. The quantity, variety and opulence of the grave goods emphasise the technological, economic and social dimensions of this unique culture. The assemblage includes politically and ideologically emblematic objects, among which a silver diadem stands out. Of equally exceptional character is the building under which the grave was found—possibly one of the first Bronze Age palaces identified in Western Europe. The architecture and artefacts from La Almoloya provide new insight into emblematic individuals and the exercise of power in societies of marked economic asymmetry.

The article discusses statistical inference in parametric models for panel data. The models feature dynamics of a general nature, individual effects, and possible explanatory variables. The focus is on large-cross-section inference on Gaussian pseudo maximum likelihood estimates with temporal dimension kept fixed, partially complementing and extending recent work of the authors. We focus on a particular kind of initial condition but go on to discuss implications of alternative initial conditions. Some possible further developments are briefly reviewed.

Nanocomposites of polysaccharide matrices, chitosan-starch and carboxymethyl cellulose-starch reinforced with graphene oxide and graphene grafted with keratin were developed. Composites films had been prepared for the casting/solvent evaporation method. The nanocomposites of chitosan/starch matrix improved substantially their mechanical properties with respect to the film without reinforcing, obtaining an increase of 929 % in the storage modulus (E’ 35°C) with only 0.5 wt% of graphene oxide and outstanding increments in E’ at 150°C and 200°C when keratin grafted graphene oxide is incorporated (0.1 wt%). In contrast, the graphene oxide incorporated into the carboxymethyl cellulose-starch matrix tends to decrease the stiffness of the film behaving in opposite way to nanocomposite of chitosan/starch matrix.

This paper proposes bootstrap assisted specification tests for the autoregressive fractionally integrated moving average model based on the Bartlett Tp-process with estimated parameters whose limiting distribution under the null depends on the estimated model and the estimation method employed. The computation of the asymptotic critical values is not easy if at all possible under these circumstances. To circumvent this problem Delgado, Hidalgo, and Velasco (2005, Annals of Statistics 33, 2568–2609) proposed an asymptotically pivotal transformation of the Tp-process with estimated parameters. The aim of this paper is twofold. First, to examine alternative methods based on bootstrap algorithms for estimating the distribution of the test under the null, showing its validity. And second, to study the finite-sample performance of the different alternative procedures via Monte Carlo simulation.

We propose tests of the null of spurious relationship against the alternative of fractional cointegration among the components of a vector of fractionally integrated time series. Our test statistics have an asymptotic chi-square distribution under the null and rely on generalized least squares–type of corrections that control for the short-run correlation of the weak dependent components of the fractionally integrated processes. We emphasize corrections based on nonparametric modelization of the innovations' autocorrelation, relaxing important conditions that are standard in the literature and, in particular, being able to consider simultaneously (asymptotically) stationary or nonstationary processes. Relatively weak conditions on the corresponding short-run and memory parameter estimates are assumed. The new tests are consistent with a divergence rate that, in most of the cases, as we show in a simple situation, depends on the cointegration degree. There is tremendous interest in using low loadings of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) to enhance the multifunctional properties of polymers, with functionalization often pursued to increase the dispersion and effective reinforcement of MWNTs within the polymer. In our interest to understand the effect of MWNT functionalization on Poly (butylene terephthalate) (PBT) crystallization kinetics, morphology and mechanical properties, nanocomposites were fabricated with both as-received and carboxyl group (-COOH) functionalized MWNTs. Initial results indicate as-received and functionalized nanotubes alter the crystallization temperature and crystal size for quiescent samples. In addition, isothermal crystallization studies using an Advanced Rheometric Expansion System (ARES) show that the addition of MWNTs increases the rate of PBT crystallization. However, functionalization was found to decrease the rate of nanocomposite crystallization as compared to nanocomposites samples prepared using pristine MWNTs, suggesting that nanotube functionalization weakens the nucleation effect observed in the nanocomposite samples. These results suggest that semicrystalline polymer nanocomposite crystallization kinetics and morphology can be significantly influenced by nanoparticle functionalization and chemistry. Further study of how these changes impact the rheological and multifunctional properties of semicrystalline nanocomposite systems are ongoing.

This paper considers testing for normality for correlated data. The proposed test procedure employs the skewness-kurtosis test statistic, but studentized by standard error estimators that are consistent under serial dependence of the observations. The standard error estimators are sample versions of the asymptotic quantities that do not incorporate any downweighting, and, hence, no smoothing parameter is needed. Therefore, the main feature of our proposed test is its simplicity, because it does not require the selection of any user-chosen parameter such as a smoothing number or the order of an approximating model.We are very grateful to Don Andrews and two referees for useful comments and suggestions. We establish valid Edgeworth expansions for the distribution of smoothed nonparametric spectral estimates, and of studentized versions of linear statistics such as the sample mean, where the studentization employs such a nonparametric spectral estimate. Particular attention is paid to the spectral estimate at zero frequency and, correspondingly, the studentized sample mean, to reflect econometric interest in autocorrelation-consistent or long-run variance estimation. Our main focus is on stationary Gaussian series, though we discuss relaxation of the Gaussianity assumption. Only smoothness conditions on the spectral density that are local to the frequency of interest are imposed. We deduce empirical expansions from our Edgeworth expansions designed to improve on the normal approximation in practice and also deduce a feasible rule of bandwidth choice.
