We present recent observation results of Sgr A* at millimeter obtained with VLBI arrays in Korea and Japan.

7 mm monitoring of Sgr A* is part of our AGN large project. The results at 7 epochs during 2013-2014, including high resolution maps, flux density and two-dimensional size measurements are presented. The source shows no significant variation in flux and structure related to the G2 encounter in 2014. According to recent MHD simulations by kawashima et al., flux and magnetic field energy can be expected to increase several years after the encounter; We will keep our monitoring in order to test this prediction.

Astrometric observations of Sgr A* were performed in 2015 at 7 and 3.5 millimeter simultaneously. Source-frequency phase referencing was applied and a combined ”core-shift” of Sgr A* and a nearby calibrator was measured. Future observations and analysis are necessary to determine the core-shift in each source.

A study of thermal instability for the two-dimensional stagnation flow for Prandtl numbers ranging from 0.7 to infinity is presented. The analysis represents an exact solution since neither the boundary-layer approximation nor the parallel-flow assumption was invoked. Of particular interest is that the critical Rayleigh number and the critical wavenumber, when defined on the basis of the thermal boundary-layer lengthscale, are found to be relatively insensitive to the Prandtl number for the range of Prandtl numbers studied.

The reaction mechanism between electroless Ni–P and Sn was investigated to understand the effects of Sn on solder reaction-assisted crystallization at low temperatures as well as self-crystallization of Ni–P at high temperatures. Ni3Sn4 starts to form in a solid-state reaction well before Sn melts. Heat of reaction for Ni3Sn4 was measured during the Ni–P and Sn reaction (241.2 J/g). It was found that the solder reaction not only promotes crystallization at low temperatures by forming Ni3P in the P-rich layer but also facilitates self-crystallization of Ni–P by reducing the transformation temperature and heat of crystallization. The presence of Sn reduces the self-crystallization temperature of Ni–P by about 10 °C. The heat of crystallization also decreases with an increased Sn thickness.

The flow of a slurry in a CMP process has been investigated. This wafer-scale model provides the three dimensional flow field of the slurry, the spatial distribution of the local shear rate imposed on the wafer surface, and the streamline patterns which reflect the transport characteristics of the slurry.

A microwave based “wall probe” has been developed which is capable of nondestructive evaluation of architectural structures. By using microwaves in the 8 to 12 GHz range this probing instrument can detect subsurface characteristics through concrete, brick, wood or other building materials to depths in excess of 12 inches.

The instrument interrogates a structure from a single side by transmitting a microwave signal into the surface at some angle of incidence and receiving the reflected signal some distance away on the same side of the structure. The transmitted signal is partially reflected at each internal boundary of different dielectric constant, giving a composite reflection which contains information from each internal layer. The reflected composite signal is compared in phase and amplitude to the transmitted signal and that reading is considered the “signature” of the structure under test. Computer algorithms analyze the signature for recognizable features and nonstandard construction.

Molecular second-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities (β) based on EFISH measurements in dimethylsulfoxide of selected donor-acceptor substituted organic compounds are reported. Enhanced values were noted for compounds containing highly ionizable substituents. Compounds possessing the highest susceptibilities were dissolved in polymer films and electric-field poled, leading to corresponding enhancements in the nonlinear optical coefficients. The data are consistent with molecular and thermodynamic models.
