Nicotine 2,6-dihydroxybenzoate is a nicotine salt that can be used as the nicotine source in tobacco products. X-ray powder diffraction data, unit-cell parameters, and space group for nicotine 2,6-dihydroxybenzoate, C10H15N2⋅C7H5O4, are reported [a = 7.726(8) Å, b = 11.724(3) Å, c = 9.437(1) Å, α = 90°, β = 109.081(3)°, γ = 90°, unit-cell volume V = 802.902 Å3, Z = 2, ρcal = 1.309 g cm−3, and space group P21] at room temperature. All measured lines were indexed and were consistent with the P21 space group.

The present study aimed to explore the association between dietary patterns in abdominal obesity obtained by reduced-rank regression (RRR) with visceral fat index (VFI) as a dependent variable and dyslipidemia in rural adults in Henan, China. A total of 29538 people aged 18–79 were selected from the Henan Rural Cohort Study. RRR analysis was used to identify dietary patterns; logistic regression analysis and restricted cubic spline regression models were applied to analyze the association between dietary patterns in abdominal obesity and dyslipidemia. VFI was used as a mediator to estimate the mediation effect. The dietary pattern in abdominal obesity was characterized by high carbohydrate and red meat intake and low consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables, milk, etc. After full adjustment, the highest quartile of dietary pattern scores was significantly associated with an increased risk of dyslipidemia (OR: 1·33, 95 % CI 1·23–1·44, P trend < 0·001), there was a non-linear dose–response relationship between them (P overall-association < 0·001, P non-lin-association = 0·022). The result was similar in dose-response between the dietary pattern scores and VFI. The indirect effect partially mediated by VFI was significant (OR: 1·07, 95 % CI 1·06–1·08). VIF explained approximately 53·3 % of odds of dyslipidemia related to the dietary pattern. Abdominal obesity dietary pattern scores positively affected VFI and dyslipidemia; there was a dose-response in both relationships. Dyslipidemia progression increased with higher abdominal obesity dietary pattern scores. In addition, VFI played a partial mediating role in relationship between abdominal obesity dietary pattern and dyslipidemia.

The very high frequency data exchange system (VDES) is promising in promoting electronic navigation (E-navigation) and improving navigation safety. The multiple access control (MAC) protocol is crucial to the transmission performance of VDES. The self-organising time division multiple access (SOTDMA) protocol, as the only access mode given by current recommendations, leads to a high rate of transmission collisions in the traditional automatic identification system (AIS), especially with heavy traffic loads. This paper proposes a novel feedback based time division multiple access (FBTDMA) protocol to address the problems caused by SOTDMA, such that collision of transmissions can be avoided in information transmission among vessels. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed FBTDMA outperforms the traditional SOTDMA in terms of channel utilisation and throughput, and significantly reduces the transmission collision rate. The study is expected to provide insights into VDES standardisation and E-navigation modernisation.

The various vision-based tactile sensors have been developed for robotic perception in recent years. In this paper, the novel soft robotic finger embedded with the visual sensor is proposed for perception. It consists of a colored soft inner chamber, an outer structure, and an endoscope camera. The bending perception algorithm based on image preprocessing and deep learning is proposed. The boundary of color regions and the position of marker dots are extracted from the inner chamber image and label image, respectively. Then the convolutional neural network with multi-task learning is trained to obtain bending states of the finger. Finally, the experiments are implemented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Sterol regulatory element binding protein 1 (SREBP1) has a central regulatory effect on milk fat synthesis. Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) can induce mastitis and cause milk fat depression in cows. SREBP1 is also known to be associated with inflammatory regulation. Thus, in the current study, we hypothesized that LPS-induced milk fat depression in dairy cow mammary epithelial cells (DCMECs) operates via decreased SREBP1 expression and activity. To examine the hypothesis, DCMECs were isolated and purified from dairy cow mammary tissue and treated with LPS (10 µg/ml). LPS treatment of DCMECs suppressed lipid-metabolism-related transcription factor SREBP1 mRNA expression, nuclear translocation and protein expression, leading to reduced triglyceride content. The transcription levels of acetyl-CoA carboxylase-1 and fatty acid synthetase were significantly down-regulated in DCMECs after LPS treatment, suggesting that acetyl-CoA carboxylase-1 and fatty acid synthetase involved in de novo milk fat synthesis was regulated by SREBP1. In summary, these results suggest that LPS induces milk fat depression in dairy cow mammary epithelial cells via decreased expression of SREBP1 in a time-dependent manner.

A facile synthesis procedure of nitrogen-self-doped porous carbon (NPC) derived from abundant natural biological materials has been presented. The pyrolysis temperature and the weight ratio of Co3O4 to carbon play a key role in determining microscopic structure and electrochemical performances of the final materials. The ordered mesostructures with nanopores in the channel walls provided support for immobilization of well-dispersed Co3O4 nanoparticles. They also served as a highly conductive substrate for effectively alleviating severe particle aggregation during the charge/discharge processes, which prevented capacity fading from deteriorated electric contact between the components. Taking advantage of the interconnected porous structures and high specific surface area (1799 m2/g) of carbon substrate, the Co3O4/NPC composite as anode in lithium-ion battery delivers a stable reversible capacity of 903 mA h/g after 400 cycles. It is expected that by loading other electrode active materials on such carbon material, the manufacture of the promising anode materials with excellent cycle stability is highly possible.

Microscopy studies were performed over a series of metal-organic-framework (MOF) imbedded electrospun fibers. Analysis of as-spun fibers revealed five different MOF particle-fiber imbedded morphologies including complete particle encasement, over-filled, surface-bound, welded, and agglomerated. To mitigate issues with fiber breakup during electrospinning (ES) due to MOF particle incorporation, secondary growth method was used. Secondary growth was performed on both Matrimid and polysulfone fibers impregnated with a MOF, ZIF-8, in either water or methanol solvents. Results show that when water was used, crystal formation was limited to formation on the top layer of the fiber mat due to hydrophobicity. When methanol was used in place of water, MOF crystal growth occurred in a patchwise manner, where crystals grow across fibers and span the entire fiber mat. From this work, it was determined that successful secondary growth of MOF imbedded electrospun fibers can be accomplished when particles are either highly exposed along the fiber surface for adequate exposure to solvent, or the solvent used promotes reactant penetration into the polymer to allow access to the seeded MOF crystals.

The microstructural evolution of spray-formed high speed steel during hot deformation was investigated as well as the effects of spray forming parameters on the porosity formation. Four distinct zones are identified in the as-deposited material, and interstitial porosity is present in the bottom and peripheral zones, while gas-related porosity is mainly found in the central zone. It can keep the porosity at a minimum value by using the optimum parameters, e.g., the average porosity of central zone is 3.7% for a superheat of 170 °C and a gas-to-metal flow rate of 0.7. During hot deformation at 1150 °C, the amount of porosity can be obviously decreased by increasing the height reduction which also plays a key role in breaking up eutectic carbides. The critical height reduction for the breakdown of the eutectic carbides is 50%, the dominant mechanism being mechanical fragmentation.

X-ray powder diffraction data for 1-(4-aminophenyl)-5,6-dihydro-3-(4-morpholinyl)-2(1H)-pyridinone, C15H19N3O2, are reported [a = 14.877(4) Å, b = 5.893(6) Å, c = 18.984(3) Å, α = 90°, β = 122.298(3)°, γ = 90°, unit-cell volume V = 1406.86 Å3, Z = 4, and space group P21/c]. All measured lines were indexed and are consistent with the P21/c space group. No detectable impurities were observed.

To determine whether plastic-hardening behavior occurs in metal nanowires, an atomistic simulation was performed to investigate the tension process in a bicrystal Cu nanowire. The results indicate that bicrystal Cu nanowires exhibit strain-hardening behavior, unlike their single-crystal counterparts. The strain-hardening behavior is related to the orientation of two crystal grains, and the number of atoms determines whether strain-hardening behavior occurs in the asymmetrically tilted bicrystal Cu nanowires. Strain hardening occurs in almost bicrystal Cu nanowires with different orientation angles. The initial yield stress is determined by the grain whose orientation angle is closer to 45° among the two crystal grains, resulting in a high value of the tilting tendency factor, and thus making it easier to generate slip.

Atomic layer deposition has attracted much attention recently in fabricating noble metal nanoparticles for a wide range of applications. We have explored synthesizing palladium nanoparticles via atomic layer deposition on self-assembled monolayers modified silicon substrate. Using alkyltrichlorosilanes as the passivating agents, our results show the method is capable of fabricating Pd nanoparticles with well controlled density and particle diameter on the modified silicon substrate.

Spectroscopic Ellipsometry (SE) was chosen to study thin film growth in atomic layer deposition (ALD). It was shown that Cauchy model had limitations in predicting the ultrathin film thickness at initial few deposition cycles, and the fitting results depend on wavelengths range greatly. Effective Medium Approximation (EMA) model is capable of predicting ultrathin film’s physical properties. Our experiments on Al2O3 growth give supporting evidence on the applicability of EMA model, where it is used to successfully explain the initial nucleation and island like growth. EMA model can be extended to be used for Palladium thin film, which can give reasonable thickness and void content.

The transport properties of the atomic scale side contact between different metals (Au, Ag, Pt, Cu, Ni, Pd) and graphene with open zigzag ends have been studied from first-principles electron transport calculations. According to the contact configurations, we find the weakly interacting metals (Au, Ag, Pt and Cu) can form chemical bonds at the open graphene’s atomic edges, while the strongly interacting ones form chemical bonds in the whole contact region. Comparing with the case of end contact which could effectively decrease the contact resistance, the atomic scale side contact shows better transport properties than the end contact. And the graphene/metal side contact with hydrogen terminated graphene edge show obviously large resistance than the ones with open graphene edge, which signifies the importance of the termination of graphene edge in graphene/metal contact.

Bimetallic Pd-Au nanoparticles have received much attention due to their potential applications in catalysis. We have developed a Pd-Au alloy potential based on Chen-Mobius lattice inversion method and applied it to the investigation of the melting of Pd-Au binary nanoparticles via molecular dynamics simulations. Our simulation results show the particle size dependence of the melting point and an enrichment of Au atoms to the surface near melting temperature.

Metal-graphene contact is of critical significance in graphene-based nanoelectronics. There are two possible metal-graphene contact geometries: side-contact and end-contact. In this paper, we apply first-principles calculations to study metal-graphene end-contact for these three commonly used electrode metals (Ni, Pd and Ti) and find that they have distinctive stable end-contact geometries with graphene. Transport properties of these metal-graphene-metal (M-G-M) end-contact structures are investigated by density functional theory non-equilibrium Green’s function (DFT-NEGF) algorithm. The Transmission as a function of chemical potential (E-EF) shows asymmetric curves relative to the Fermi level. Transmission curves of Ni-G-Ni and Ti-G-Ti contact structures indicate that bulk graphene sheet is n-doped by Ni and Ti electrodes, but that of Pd-G-Pd shows p-doping of graphene by Pd electrode. The contact behaviors of these electrodes are consistent with experimental observations.

Alloying has been one of the strategies to develop alternatives to Pt based CO oxidation catalyst. PdAu bimetallic alloy has recently been shown to have better reactivity and thermal stability toward CO oxidation for diesel engine applications as compared to pure metal catalysts. The key factor for low temperature light off in diesel engine catalysis is reactivity of alloy catalysts under CO environment, which in turn depends on the alloy surface composition and morphology. We explored the segregation processes in bimetallic Pd-Au alloy using first-principles calculations, assisted by a Monte-Carlo (MC) scheme that combines an improved Embedded Atom Method (EAM) and an atomistic treatment for adsorbed CO molecules for searching low energy states. Our simulation results show that PdAu surface changes from Au-rich to Pd-rich with increase in CO coverage up to 0.75 ML, beyond which additional CO adsorption is no longer favorable. A quantitative relationship between CO coverage and Pd concentrations on the surface is also revealed.

It is generally accepted that CO oxidation on transition metals follows a Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism. The oxidation reaction takes place in two sequential steps where the oxygen molecule first dissociates into atomic oxygen and then reacts with an adsorbed CO to form CO2. One critical question concerning the reaction kinetics under high pressure is the probability of oxygen dissociation on a highly CO covered surface. On bare transition metal surfaces, molecularly adsorbed oxygen readily dissociates with little or no apparent activation barrier. In industrial diesel engine catalysis, the metal surface is initially packed with CO. Subsequent reactions such as oxygen dissociation must take place on a CO covered surface. In this paper, we performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations for O2 dissociation on Pt(111) in the presence of different CO adsorption environments. While several stable O2 molecular precursor states (top-bridge-top, top-fcc-bridge, and top-hcp-bridge) exist on a clean Pt(111) surface, these precursors become endothermic beyond a critical CO coverage of ∼0.44 ML. Furthermore, the reaction path for CO oxidation via dissociated atomic oxygen becomes less favorable at higher CO coverage, primarily due to competitive adsorption and lateral repulsion. It was found that the oxygen dissociation barrier and the binding energies of atomic oxygen are well correlated via the Evans-Polanyi relationship.

CO saturation coverage on Pt(111) is crucially important in diesel oxidation catalysis. We systematically studied high coverage CO adsorption on the Pt(111) surface using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and classical Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. The zero-coverage limit CO adsorption energy at different binding sites is almost degenerate at the revised Perdew–Burke–Erzernhof functional (RPBE) level. As CO populates the surface, strong through-space repulsion and substrate-mediated metal sharing tends to dominate the stability of adsorbates and alter their binding preferences. The calculated differential binding energy curve and adsorption patterns compare well with experiments.
