Examining the role of arts and culture in regional Australia often focuses on economic aspects within the creative industries. However, this perspective tends to disregard the value of unconventional practices and fails to recognise the influence of regional ecological settings and the well-being advantages experienced by amateur and hobbyist musicians who explore ubiquitous methods of music creation. This article presents the results of a survey conducted among practitioners in regional Australia, exploring their utilisation of creative technology ecosystems. This project marks the first independent, evidence-based study of experimental electronic music practices in regional Australia and how local and digital resource ecosystems support those activities. Spanning the years 2021 and 2022, the study involved interviewing 11 participants from many Australian states. In this article, we share the study’s findings, outlining the diverse range of experimental electronic music practices taking place across regional Australia and how practitioners navigate the opportunities and challenges presented by their local context.

A significant number of young people throughout the world are experiencing mental health concerns. Many young people will develop their first mental health concerns or will be managing their symptoms while enrolled in institutions of higher education. Although many colleges and universities are aware of the significant mental health needs among their students, the mental health and psychosocial needs of students often exceed the availability of resources and cultural and contextual barriers, such as stigma, may further impede access to care. Such gaps and barriers in mental health may lead to poor prognosis as well as negative educational and social outcomes. We propose that non-specialist delivered mental health and psychosocial interventions may play a critical role in reducing the gaps in care for students in higher education. In particular, non-specialist delivered care can complement existing specialized services to provide stepped models of care. Importantly, the adaptation and implementation of non-specialist delivered mental health and psychosocial support interventions in higher education may lead to innovative strategies for increasing access to care in this context, but may lead to adaptations that could apply to contexts outside of higher education as well.

The emergence of and reaction to policy scandals has been usefully studied through comparative case studies. Far less attention has been devoted, however, to the study of such scandals in long-term historical context. With the aim of illuminating longer-term social processes which shape the likelihood that (health)care scandals emerge, we delineate three areas where such changes are visible: a) changing formats of social relations and emotions within and around care provision, and thereby understandings of and demands for compassionate care; b) heightened organisational and political sensitivity to failings; and c) changes in media reporting on healthcare failings, as well as in policy-makers’ responsiveness to and manipulation of media. We consider the 2013 Mid Staffordshire scandal in the English National Health Service and the extant policy literature on this scandal to help illuminate the added analytical value of our long-term approach. In the final section we explore the interconnection of the three processes and how longer-term approaches open up new vistas for policy analysis.

There are relatively few comparisons between synthetic aperture radar (SAR) observations and glacier mass-balance measurements. More typically, SAR has been deployed to identify changes in the end-of-summer snowline and other facies boundaries. In this paper, we analyze the geophysical processes affecting SAR amplitude data over two Arctic glacier systems in northern Scandinavia to assess the potential of SAR observations for the retrieval of surface balance parameters. Using a backscatter model and in situ data, we identify the controls on SAR imagery in terms of mass-balance measurement and discuss the glaciological parameters which can reasonably be derived from multi-temporal SAR data. Our results show that amplitude SAR imagery, in the absence of in situ measurements, is not capable of providing meaningful mass-balance data. We show that backscatter from temperate glaciers is affected primarily by snow grain-size and density, and therefore processes such as firnification or depth-hoar formation can complicate the analysis of imagery. We conclude that SAR imagery over temperate glaciers can provide valuable proxy information but not direct mass-balance terms.

The General Medical Council suggests that leadership skills are a core requirement for all doctors. The NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement goes further, stating that doctors have not only an intrinsic leadership role but also a responsibility to contribute to the effective running of healthcare organisations. The Medical Leadership Competency Framework (MLCF) outlines a structure with domains, elements and competency outcomes, all of which are clearly spelled out with examples and methods of learning for different stages of a medical career. The revised curriculum for postgraduate training in psychiatry contains many aspects of the MLCF, both complementing and supplementing its emphasis on the development of personal qualities and skills. This article highlights this approach and describes how the development of leadership and management skills fits with the current structures for training in psychiatry.

Motivated by the increasing need for observational resources for the study of time varying astronomy, the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope (LCOGT) is a private foundation, whose goal is to build a global network of robotic telescopes for scientific research and education. Once completed, the network will become a unique tool, capable of continuous monitoring from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The network currently includes 2 × 2.0 m telescopes, already making an impact in the field of exoplanet research. In the next few years they will be joined by at least 12 × 1.0 m and 20 × 0.4 m telescopes. The increasing amount of LCOGT observational resources in the coming years will be of great service to the astronomical community in general, and the exoplanet community in particular.

Animal evidence indicates that green tea may modulate insulin sensitivity, with epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) proposed as a likely health-promoting component. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation with EGCG on insulin resistance and associated metabolic risk factors in man. Overweight or obese male subjects, aged 40–65 years, were randomly assigned to take 400 mg capsules of EGCG (n 46) or the placebo lactose (n 42), twice daily for 8 weeks. Oral glucose tolerance testing and measurement of metabolic risk factors (BMI, waist circumference, percentage body fat, blood pressure, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, TAG) was conducted pre- and post-intervention. Mood was evaluated weekly using the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology mood adjective checklist. EGCG treatment had no effect on insulin sensitivity, insulin secretion or glucose tolerance but did reduce diastolic blood pressure (mean change: placebo − 0·058 (se 0·75) mmHg; EGCG − 2·68 (se 0·72) mmHg; P = 0·014). No significant change in the other metabolic risk factors was observed. The EGCG group also reported feeling in a more positive mood than the placebo group across the intervention period (mean score for hedonic tone: EGCG, 29·11 (se 0·44); placebo, 27·84 (se 0·46); P = 0·048). In conclusion, regular intake of EGCG had no effect on insulin resistance but did result in a modest reduction in diastolic blood pressure. This antihypertensive effect may contribute to some of the cardiovascular benefits associated with habitual green tea consumption. EGCG treatment also had a positive effect on mood. Further studies are needed to confirm the findings and investigate their mechanistic basis.
