Keller [Stochastic stability in some chaotic dynamical systems. Monatsh. Math.94(4) (1982), 313–333] introduced families of W-shaped maps that can have a great variety of behaviors. As a family approaches a limit W map, he observed behavior that was either described by a probability density function (PDF) or by a singular point measure. Based on this, Keller conjectured that instability of the absolutely continuous invariant measure (ACIM) can result only from the existence of small invariant neighborhoods of the fixed critical point of the limit map. In this paper, we show that the conjecture is not true. We construct a very simple family of W-maps with ACIMs supported on the whole interval, whose limiting dynamical behavior is captured by a singular measure. Key to the analysis is the use of a general formula for invariant densities of piecewise linear and expanding maps [P. Góra. Invariant densities for piecewise linear maps of interval. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys. 29(5) (2009), 1549–1583].

We present a sufficient condition for the existence of ergodic continuous invariant measures (ECIMs) for continuous folding transformations. We apply this result to prove the existence of ECIMs for general set expanding Markov transformations and $n$-dimensional tent maps.

Let X be a space with two metrics d1 and d2. Let S :(X, d1) → (X, d2) be continuous. We say S has the generalized pseudoorbit shadowing property with respect to the metrics d1 and d2 if for every every δ-pseudo-orbit in d1 can be ∊-shadowed by a true orbit in d2, i.e., if {x0, x1,…} satisfies for all i ≧ 0, then for all i ≧ 0. The main result of this note shows that certain Markov operators P : L1→ L1 have the generalized shadowing property on weakly compact subsets of the space of probability density functions, where d1 is the metric of norm convergence and d2 is the metric of weak convergence. An important class of such operators are the Frobenius-Perron operators induced by certain expanding and nonexpanding maps on the interval. When there is exponential convergence of the iterates to the density, we can express δ in terms of ∊. We also show that, unlike the situation in the space X itself, the generalized shadowing property is valid for all parameters in families of maps and that there is stability of the shadowing property.

A random map is a discrete time process in which one of a number of maps, 𝓜, is chosen at random at each stage and applied. In this note we study a random map, where 𝓜 is a set of piecewise linear Markov maps on [0, 1]. Sufficient conditions are presented which allow the determination of the unique absolutely continuous invariant measure of the process.
