Language fluency often impacts on patients’ behaviors. It might affect their pathways, how they find an available psychiatric clinic, and the clinical outcomes, if they continue their treatments. Multicultural services deficiency is serious concern in Japanese psychiatric fields. According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in 2014, more than two million of foreign visitors live in Japan, however, the psychiatric institutions providing multilingual services are rare and inadequate comparing the situation in Europe. The research sets the objective of analyzing the status quo in a multi-language providing psychiatric clinic, how the pathways and outcomes of language diffluent patients differ from these of the local patients. It further aims to find the significance of foreign patients, and strives the improvement of language services for non-native patients in Japanese mental health cares. The research utilized and quantitatively analyzed the retrospective research data among 900 Japanese patients and 902 non-Japanese patients, who have visited a psychiatric clinic located in Tokyo. The analysis revealed that the significant proportion of foreign patients relied on their acquaintances as their pathways, and that the lower their language levels were, the higher proportion they had this path. For the outcomes, the lower their language levels were, the higher continuity status they had. Our research suggested that two of the common ways to find a psychiatric service when local patients suffer from psychopathological maladjustments are researching Homepages and neighboring clinics, however, the foreigners with limited language abilities tended to follow the different pathways and outcome patterns.

Manufacturing of advanced functional materials should also rely on the green chemistry principles like utilization of natural renewable resources. Marine environment offers plenty of renewable raw materials like chitin and its derivative chitosan. The paper presents how urea treatment has influenced several textural, chemical, and electrocatalytic properties of N-doped activated carbons (N_ACs) obtained from chitosan and chitin. The materials were subjected to an activation procedure (with different activators) as well as nitrogenation by premixing the precursors with water solutions of urea. Raw and premixed precursors were carbonized in the temperature range of 700–800 °C. The urea treatment resulted in a spectacular increase in the nitrogen content by weight (up to 68%) and an improvement of the surface area (up to 42%) along with total/micro-/mezo-pore volume (up to 49%). Some urea-modified N_ACs were capable of reducing oxygen in an alkaline solution as effectively as a Pt-loaded carbon material. The highest number of electrons transferred to O2 molecule was found to be equal to 3.76 for a chitosan derived sample. This ability of chitosan and chitin derived N-rich activated carbons was studied by means of the method named rotating ring disc electrode.

Spin-transfer-torque magnetoresistive random-access memory (STT-MRAM) is an emerging nonvolatile memory that uses magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) to store information. MTJs with a crystalline MgO(001) tunnel barrier sandwiched between ferromagnetic layers, such as CoFeB, exhibit giant tunnel magnetoresistance, which is used to readout the STT-MRAM. Writing of STT-MRAM is based on current-induced magnetization reversal, called STT switching. STT-MRAM with perpendicular magnetization is especially important for high-density and low-power-consuming memory applications such as embedded memory for large-scale integrated circuit. For STT-MRAM to replace ultrahigh-density dynamic random-access memory, however, there are still technological challenges concerning the materials and fabrication processes of MTJs. This article reviews the physics and materials science of MTJs for STT-MRAM. We also discuss the importance of new MTJ materials and processes for next-generation ultrahigh-density MRAM.

Molecular dynamics simulations of compression deformation of $\left[ {11\bar 20} \right]$-textured 2-dimensional polycrystalline pure Mg, Mg–0.1 at.%Al, and Mg–1.0 at.%Al models were performed at 5 and 300 K. A $\left\{ {10\bar 11} \right\}$ twin nucleated before formation of a $\left\{ {10\bar 12} \right\}$ twin in the simulations at 5 K, while a $\left\{ {10\bar 11} \right\}$ twin nucleated after formation of a $\left\{ {10\bar 12} \right\}$ twin in the simulations at 300 K. The formation of a $\left\{ {10\bar 11} \right\}$ twin was the result of the glide of pyramidal 〈c + a〉 partial dislocations of ${1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 6}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 6}\left\{ {10\bar 11} \right\}\left[ {\bar 2023} \right]$. $\left\{ {10\bar 11} \right\}$ twin formation was suppressed at the sites around the Al atoms because the strong Mg–Al bond suppresses atomic shuffling. However, formation was not suppressed at the sites away from the Al atoms because the effect of strong Mg–Al bond is short range. On the other hand, because $\left\{ {10\bar 12} \right\}$ twinning requires the simultaneous glide of zonal dislocations, Al inevitably suppressed $\left\{ {10\bar 12} \right\}$ twinning.

Background: Smoking cessation is most needed but, least accessible public health intervention in developing countries. Practicality of smoking cessation interventions determines their feasibility to implement in resource-limited setting.

Objectives: This review aimed at identifying strategic mechanisms to launch accessible smoking cessation services within primary health care settings of developing countries.

Methods: The efficacy of smoking cessation methods were reviewed in Cochrane reviews and clinical trials. Relevant research with an outcome of smoking cessation for six months and articles published after 2000 indexed in the PubMed database were reviewed. The practicality of each intervention was narratively appraised with further reviewing relevant effectiveness trials and observational studies.

Finding and discussion: Contemporary evidence favours multi-components smoking cessation strategy combining more than one efficacy-proven methods such as brief advice, nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and nursing intervention. Future trials to evaluate social and family influences on smoking behaviour in combination with above interventions are necessary. Moreover, training health care professionals in primary health care to implement smoking cessation intervention may overcome human resource insufficiency and ensure smokers’ access to cessation service within the community setting.

Hot-rolled Mg–Zn–Ca alloy, followed by annealing, shows high formability at room temperature because of the reduced intensity of the basal texture. [Y. Chino et al., Mater. Trans. 51, 818 (2010).] In the present work, microstructures of the as-rolled Mg–Zn–Ca alloy were investigated using electron backscattered secondary diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. In addition, first-principles calculations were performed to investigate the twinnability of the Mg–Zn–Ca alloy. The microstructural investigations revealed that fine $\left\{ {10\bar 12} \right\}$ twins and local fine-grained microstructures were formed. It is therefore suggested that the fine twins induce this local fine-grained microstructure, which become the nuclei for recrystallization during annealing. As a result, the intensity of the basal texture is reduced. Calculations revealed that the $\left\{ {10\bar 12} \right\}$ twinnability is enhanced by the addition of Ca because of the increased unstable stacking fault energy (γus) and decreased unstable twin fault energy (γut).

First-principles shear tests were performed on pure Mg, Mg–Li, Mg–Ca, Mg–Al, Mg–Sn, Mg–Ag, and Mg–Zn models to investigate the mechanical and chemical effects of the solute elements on the generalized stacking fault energy (GSFE) of Mg. The mechanical effect increased the unstable stacking fault energy (USFE), independent of the kind of solute element tested. The intensity of the mechanical effect was explained by the average distance between a solute atom and the surrounding Mg atoms, not by a difference in atomic radius between a solute atom and a Mg atom. In contrast, the chemical effect on the USFE was complicated, and the chemical effects of Ag and Zn were lower than expected from their electronegativity. Also, the chemical effect increased the USFE for the Li addition, but it decreased the USFE for the Ca addition although the electronegativity of Li is almost the same as that of Ca.

Images of vertebrates (zebrafish and zebrafish eye) have been obtained by using an X-ray phase-contrast imaging technique, namely, synchrotron-based diffraction-enhanced imaging (SY-DEI) (or analyzer based imaging) and synchrotron-based diffraction imaging in tomography mode (SY-DEI-CT). Due to the limitations of the conventional radiographic imaging in visualizing the internal complex feature of the sample, we utilized the upgraded SY-DEI and SY-DEI-CT systems to acquire the images at 20, 30 and 40 keV, to observe the enhanced contrast. SY-DEI and SY-DEI-CT techniques exploits the refraction properties, and have great potential in studies of soft biological tissues, in particular for low (Z) elements, such as, C, H, O and N, which constitutes the soft tissue. Recently, these techniques are characterized by its extraordinary image quality, with improved contrast, by imaging invertebrates. We have chosen the vertebrate sample of zebrafish (Danio rerio), a model organism widely used in developmental biology and oncology. For biological imaging, these techniques are most sensitive to enhance the contrast. For the present study, images of the sample, in planar and tomography modes offer more clarity on the contrast enhancement of anatomical features of the eye, especially the nerve bundle, swim bladder, grills and some internal organs in gut with more visibility.

Liposome was synthesized by using mixture of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine and cholesterol in the ultrapure water or physiological saline. Phase transformation temperature and vibrational mode of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine molecule were detected by using transmission Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy for aqueous solution, which we developed. The liposomes were fixed on an amorphous carbon mesh for ultra-high resolution transmission electron microscopy observation and stained with platinum thymidine blue. As-prepared liposomes reinforced with cholesterol were spherical in shape with size larger than 100 nm in diameter and still stable in the vacuum. Under the strong electron irradiation condition, the solution enclosed in the liposomes became unstable and then collapsed. On the other hand, the liposome synthesized in the physiological saline sometimes contains crystallized salt. As a result, the liposome shows proper strength to hold wet material in itself in a vacuum and can be used for the transmission electron microscopy observation.

Grain boundary (GB) sliding is an important deformation mode in polycrystals, and it has been extensively investigated, for example, there are many studies on influences of the atomic geometry in the GB region. However, it is important to investigate GB sliding from the electronic structure of GB for deeper understandings of the sliding mechanisms. In the present work, we investigated the GBs sliding in pure and segregated bicrystals with classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and first-principles calculations. It is accepted that the sliding rate is affected by the GB energy. However, there was no correlation between the sliding rate and the GB energy in either the pure or the segregated bicrystals. First-principles calculations revealed that the sliding rate calculated by the MD simulations increases with decreasing minimum charge density at the bond critical point in the GB. This held in both the pure and segregated bicrystals. It seems that the sliding rate depends on atomic movement at the minimum charge density sites.

First-principles fully relaxed tensile and shear test simulations were performed on tilt Fe grain-boundaries (GBs) with and without hydrogen (H) segregation, to investigate the mechanisms of GB embrittlement enhanced by H segregation. Premature fracture was found in the H-segregated GB, compared with the clean GB, in the tensile test simulations. The Fe–H bond showed covalent-like and ion-like characteristics. The covalent-like characteristics reinforced the Fe–Fe bonds, but the ion-like characteristics weakened the Fe–Fe bonds as a result of charge transfer. The effect of the latter increased with increasing strain, and prevailed over the former, resulting in GB embrittlement. In the shear test simulations, variation in the GB energy for the H-segregated GB was almost the same as that for the clean GB. This is because bond-breaking and rebonding occur concurrently in GB shearing and the variations in charge transfer during shear straining are less than those during tensile straining.

The optical isolator made of diluted magnetic semiconductor and the isolator made of a ferromagnetic-metal/semiconductor hybrid have been developed aiming to integrate nonreciprocal optical devices, such as an optical isolator and optical circulator, into the semiconductor-made optoelectronic integrated circuits,. The Cd1-xMnxTe exhibits a huge Faraday effect and can be grown on a semiconductor substrate. For Cd1-xMnxTe waveguide with a Cd1-xZnxTe/ Cd1-xMnxTe quantum well grown on GaAs substrate we achieved a high Faraday rotation of 2000 deg/cm, a high isolation ratio of 27 dB, a low optical loss of 0.5 dB/cm, and a high magneto-optical figure-of-merit of 2000 deg/dB/kG in a wide 25-nm wavelength range. It was predicted theoretically and proved experimentally the effect of non-reciprocal loss in hybrid semiconductor/ferromagnetic metal waveguides. This effect can be use for new design of waveguide optical isolator. Because of its simplicity and technological compatibility, this design is attractive for the integration into optoelectronic integrated circuits. The magneto-optical figure-of merit of 7% was demonstrated for the AlGaAs passive optical waveguide covered by Co.
