The overarching theme of causality in behavioral genetics is discussed on epistemological grounds. Evidence is offered in favor of a continuum spectrum in causality, in contrast to discrimination between causal factors and associations. The risk of invalidating exploratory studies in behavior genetics is discussed, especially for the potential impact on those fields of medicine interested in complex behaviors.

We took profit of the availability of large catalogs of active galact nuclei (AGNs) selected in the hard X-ray from satellite missions (e. g., INTEGRAL, Swift/BAT) to investigate the relation between the occurrence of water maser emission and the X-ray properties of the nuclei on a statistically meaningful basis. Our studies demonstrate that the hard X-ray selection may significantly enhance the maser detection rate over comparably large optical or infrared surveys. Here, we report on a recent survey to search for water maser emission with the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT) in a sample of heavily absorbed AGN taken from the 70 months Swift/BAT catalog.

Fundamental physical quantities of the nuclear regions of the Active Galactic Nuclei can be obtained using megamaser studies. In particular, disk-masers associated with accretion disks around the supermassive black holes are used, through high angular resolution measurements, to trace the disk geometry, to estimate the BH mass and to measure accurate distances to their host galaxies. In this contribution, we present the first results in continuum and spectral-line mode of a high-sensitivity, multi-epoch VLBI study of the nuclear region of the megamaser LINER galaxy IC 485.

Extragalactic maser sources are unique tools to derive fundamental physical quantities of the host galaxies, e.g, geometry of accretion disks around super-massive black holes and precise black hole masses, and study in detail the interaction region of nuclear jets/outflows with the interstellar medium, in nearby and distant Active Galactic Nuclei. So far, however, extragalactic maser searches have yielded detection of few percent, and only relatively few maser sources have been found. Because of their unprecedented sensitivity, new upcoming facilities, like the SKA and the ngVLA, will allow to significantly increase the number of known (water) maser sources. This will lead to the chance of performing statistically-relevant studies of the maser phenomenon (and its occurrence), derive extragalactic masers luminosity functions, and ultimately (in particular, through the aid of longer-baselines arrays options) to perform the studies described above for larger samples and up to cosmological distances.

This article assesses the Liberal and Fascist administrations’ shifting attitudes towards colonial concubinage during the years of the repression of the anti-colonial resistance in Italian Libya (1911–32). Also known as mabruchismo, concubinage in Libya closely resembled its counterpart in Italian Eastern Africa, as it involved middle- to upper-class Italian officers coercing colonised women into engaging in often exploitative intimate relationships. During the first 20 years of colonisation of the territory, the colony's military administration employed an ambiguous stance regarding the practice, condemning it discursively to ingratiate itself with the local elites while unofficially allowing it to provide safe sex to its officers. When the resistance was defeated in the early 1930s, and the Fascist administration began its demographic colonisation plans, colonial concubinage was prohibited as out of place in a racially segregated settler colony. This article employs an analysis of official archival sources to trace the regulatory framework that shaped the lives of the Libyan women and Italian officers engaged in concubinage in a shifting colonial society. The colonial administrations’’ regulatory efforts toward colonial concubinage testify to the crucial role that Libyan women and racially ‘‘mixed’’ relationships played in shaping categories of race, class, and gender relative to the Italian colonial context.

The dwarf galaxies in the Local Group (LG) reveal a surprising amount of spatial structuring. In particular, almost all non-satellite dwarfs belong to one of two planes that show a very pronounced symmetry. In order to determine if these structures in the LG are dynamically stable or, alternatively, if they only represent transient alignments, proper motion measurements of these galaxies are required. A viable method to derive proper motions is offered by VLBI studies of 22-GHz water (and 6.7-GHz methanol) maser lines in star-forming regions.

In 2016, in the framework of the Early Science Program of the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT), we have conducted an extensive observational campaign to map the entire optical body of all the LG dwarf galaxies that belong to the two planes, at C and K band, in a search for methanol and water maser emission.

Here, we outline the project and present its first results on 3 targets, NGC 6822, IC 1613, and WLM. While no luminous maser emission has been detected in these galaxies, a number of interesting weaker detections has been obtained, associated with particularly active star forming regions. In addition, we have produced deep radio continuum maps for these galaxies, aimed at investigating their star forming activity and providing an improved assessment of star formation rates in these galaxies.

Water megamaser emission is powerful in tracing the inner region of active nuclei, mapping accretion disks and providing important clues on their absorption properties. From the X-ray spectra of AGN it is possible to estimate the intrinsic power of the central engine and the obscuring column density. The synergy between X-ray and water maser studies allows us to tackle the AGN inner physics from different perspectives. For a complete sample of AGN selected in the 20-40 keV energy range, we have investigated the presence of water maser emission and its connection to the X-ray emission, absorption and accretion rate. The hard X-ray selection of the sample results in a water maser detection rate much higher than those obtained from optically-selected samples.

Investigations of H2O maser galaxies at X-ray energies reveal that most harbor highly absorbed AGN. Possible correlations between the intrinsic X-ray luminosity and the properties of water maser emission have been suggested. With the aim of looking into these correlations on a more solid statistical basis, we have search for maser emission in a well-defined sample of Compton-thick AGN. Here we report the results of the survey, which yielded a surprisingly high maser detection rate, with a particular focus on the newly discovered luminous water maser in the lenticular (field) S0 galaxy IRAS 15480-0344. Recently, VLBI observations have been obtained to image the line and continuum emission in the nucleus of this galaxy. The radio continuum emission at VLBI scales is resolved into two compact components that are interpreted as jet knots. Based on the single-dish profile, the variability of the maser emission, and the position of the maser spots with respect to these continuum sources, we favor of a jet/outflow origin for the maser emission, consistent with similar cases found in other radio-quiet AGN. This scenario is consistent with the hypothesis of the presence of strong nuclear winds recently invoked to explain the main characteristics of field S0 galaxies.

We present a search for OH maser emission in galaxies hosting H2O masers with the 100-m Effelsberg radio telescope and the Green Bank Telescope (GBT). This survey is aimed at investigating the apparent rarity and/or possible mutual exclusion of megamaser emission from OH and H2O in the same galaxy. Our study establishes new and better upper limits on the OH maser luminosity. Our work duplicates the number of H2O masers searched for OH emission. No new maser detections have been found. OH absorption, both in the 1667 and 1665 MHz transitions, is instead detected in two galaxies of the sample, IC342 and NGG5793.

Luminous extragalactic masers are traditionally referred to as the ‘megamasers’. Those produced by water molecules are associated with accretion disks, radio jets, or outflows in the nuclear regions of active galactic nuclei (AGN). The majority of OH maser sources are instead driven by intense star formation in ultra-luminous infrared galaxies, although in a few cases the OH maser emission traces rotating (toroidal or disk) structures around the nuclear engines of AGN. Thus, detailed maser studies provide a fundamental contribution to our knowledge of the main nuclear components of AGN, constitute unique tools to measure geometric distances of host galaxies, and have a great impact on probing the, so far, paradigmatic Unified Model of AGN.

So far, few direct sub-arcsecond resolution studies exist of the dense material that, according to the standard unified scheme, should obscure the central engines of radio galaxies. In the following, observations are presented that highlight the nuclear environment of the prototypical X-shaped FR II galaxy 3C 403. To date, it is the only powerful radio galaxy known to host a water megamaser.

We have searched for 22 GHz water maser emission in a sample of FIR bright galaxies and detected two new kilomaser sources. The newly detected masers have been promptly followed-up using interferometric observations to derive positions and constraints on the size and brightness temperature of the emitting spots. Here we report results related to the newly detected kilomasers, also including the well-known kilomaser source in in NGC 253. These are discussed within the framework of the kilomaser/megamaser dichotomy.

Multi-line data of ammonia (NH3) are presented for Maffei 2, IC 342, and the starburst galaxies NGC 253 and M 82. While in M 82 the NH3 emitting gas is cool, presumably arising from well shielded dense cores deeply embedded in an environment dominated by Photon Dominated Regions, the other galaxies show ‘warm’ and ‘hot’ components that may be heated by shocks, ion-slip or cosmic rays. Interferometric observations show the detailed large scale distribution of NH3 in galaxies for the first time. The first multi-line studies of ammonia at significant redshifts (z = 0.65 and 0.89) are also reported and rotational temperatures, measures of the kinetic temperature of the emitting gas, are derived for all sources.

We report new detections of three H2O megamasers and one kilomaser using the Effelsberg 100-m telescope. Isotropic luminosities are ~50, 300, 1, and 230 L⊙ for Mrk 1066, Mrk 34, NGC 3556, and Arp 299, respectively. Mrk 34 contains the most distant H2O megamaser ever detected in a Seyfert. Our targets in this survey were chosen to fit one of the following criteria: 1) to have a high probability of interaction between the radio jet and the ISM within the central few parsecs of the radio galaxy, yielding masers which arise in local molecular clouds; or 2) to have very bright IRAS sources in which massive star forming regions might yield powerful masers. The ‘jet maser’ sources can provide detailed information about the conditions in the ISM in the central 1-10 pc of AGN. The extra-galactic ‘star formation masers’ can be used to pinpoint and characterize locations of high mass star formation in nearby galaxies. In addition, these sources will help to provide a better understanding of the chemical properties of molecular clouds in extra-galactic systems.

At 5 GHz, about 20 point sources were detected earlier by Glendenning & Kronberg (1986) in the central 800 pc of NGC 2146. Our observations with higher sensitivity and resolution made with MERLIN and the VLA confirms the detection of 18 sources, and resolves 7 of them (Fig.1). Additional 1.6-GHz MERLIN observations disclose 9 sources coincident in position with those detected at 5 GHz, which allows us to derive their spectral indices α51.6 (Sv ∼ να). Only 3 sources have indices (α < 0) consistent with synchrotron emission from supernova remnants or radio supernovae, while the others have very steep inverted spectra (α > 0).
