This article highlights the successes of the high resolution astrometric VLBI observations used for measuring proper motion of galaxies in the Local group. The required, high accuracies, often in the μ as yr−1 regime, are only attainable through the use of the phase-referencing technique. These require either a compact radio source (AGN) or strong maser emission in the target galaxy and, additionally, some compact extra-galactic radio sources (quasars) to serve as ideal background reference source. The derived proper motions can lead to lower limits on the orbital lower estimates to the mass of the host galaxy, promise a new handle on dynamical models of interacting galaxy systems and offer insights on the spatial distribution of dark matter in the near universe.

The dwarf galaxies in the Local Group (LG) reveal a surprising amount of spatial structuring. In particular, almost all non-satellite dwarfs belong to one of two planes that show a very pronounced symmetry. In order to determine if these structures in the LG are dynamically stable or, alternatively, if they only represent transient alignments, proper motion measurements of these galaxies are required. A viable method to derive proper motions is offered by VLBI studies of 22-GHz water (and 6.7-GHz methanol) maser lines in star-forming regions.

In 2016, in the framework of the Early Science Program of the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT), we have conducted an extensive observational campaign to map the entire optical body of all the LG dwarf galaxies that belong to the two planes, at C and K band, in a search for methanol and water maser emission.

Here, we outline the project and present its first results on 3 targets, NGC 6822, IC 1613, and WLM. While no luminous maser emission has been detected in these galaxies, a number of interesting weaker detections has been obtained, associated with particularly active star forming regions. In addition, we have produced deep radio continuum maps for these galaxies, aimed at investigating their star forming activity and providing an improved assessment of star formation rates in these galaxies.

In our attempt to investigate the basic active galactic nucleus (AGN) paradigm requiring a centrally located supermassive black hole (SMBH), a close to Keplerian accretion disk and a jet perpendicular to its plane, we have searched for radio continuum in galaxies with H2O megamasers in their disks. We observed 18 such galaxies with the Very Large Baseline Array in C band (5 GHz, ~2 mas resolution) and we detected 5 galaxies at 8 σ or higher levels. For those sources for which the maser data is available, the positions of masers and those of the 5 GHz radio continuum sources coincide within the uncertainties, and the radio continuum is perpendicular to the maser disk’s orientation within the position angle uncertainties.

The Central Molecular Zone (CMZ), the inner 450 pc of our Galaxy, is an exceptional region where the volume and column densities, gas temperatures, velocity dispersions, etc. are much higher than in the Galactic plane. It has been suggested that the formation of stars and clusters in this area is related to the orbital dynamics of the gas. The complex kinematic structure of the molecular gas was revealed by spectral line observations. However, these results are limited to the line-of-sight-velocities. To fully understand the motions of the gas within the CMZ, we have to know its location in 6D space (3D location + 3D motion). Recent orbital models have tried to explain the inflow of gas towards and its kinematics within this region. With parallax and proper motion measurements of masers in the CMZ we can discriminate among these models and constrain how our Galactic Center is fed with gas.

III Zw 2 shows dramatic radio outbursts roughly every five years. Here we present the light curves and VLBA observations of the latest flare with an excellent time sampling. We have detected superluminal motion with a lower limit for the apparent expansion speed of 1.25±0.09 c at 43 GHz. Spectral and spatial evolution are closely linked and the evolution of III Zw 2 in a turnover frequency vs. linear size diagram is similar to the correlation for GPS and CSS sources. Before and after this rapid expansion we observe a period of virtually no expansion. However, at 15 GHz III Zw 2 shows a constant slow expansion (∼0.6 c). The difference is qualitatively explained by optical depth effects in an ‘inflating-balloon model’, describing the evolution of radio lobes on an ultra-compact scale. The stop-and-go behaviour could be explained by a jet interacting with a molecular cloud or the molecular torus.

Accurate geometric distances, which are inherently free of systematic effects are of very great importance for an independent recalibration of extragalactic distance estimators. Local Group galaxies are close enough for both primary and secondary distance indicators to be readily isolated in ground- and space-based observations. Astrometric accuracies of a few micro-arcseconds based on Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations of water masers in high-mass star-forming regions in nearby galaxies allow a measurement of the proper motions of these masers. Since these high-mass star-forming regions rotate with the galaxies, one can deduce a rotational parallax by comparing the known rotation curve with the proper motions of the masers. I provide an update of our previous rotation parallax of M33 and show first results of observations of the recently discovered water masers in the Andromeda galaxy (M31).

Due to their compactness, persistence and slow motion, Class II CH3OH masers are excellent targets for parallax and proper motion measurements for massive star-forming regions in the Galactic Disk. These measurements can be used to improve our understanding of the spiral structure and dynamics of the Milky Way. At the same time, Class II CH3OH masers can also be used to study gas kinematics close to the exciting star, tracing rotation, infall and/or outflow motions.

We report on high-resolution astrometry of 22 GHz H2O maser emission in the Galactic massive star-forming region W51 Main/South using the Very Long Baseline Array. We measured the trigonometric parallax of W51 Main/South to be 0.185 ± 0.010 mas, corresponding to a distance of 5.41+0.31−0.28 kpc. The H2O maser emission in W51 Main/South traces four powerful bipolar outflows within a 0.4 pc size region, three of which are associated with dusty molecular hot cores and/or hyper- or ultra-compact Hii regions. The maser outflows in W51 Main/South have a relatively small range of internal 3D speeds, suggesting that multiple speed maser outflows in other Galactic massive star-forming regions may come from separate young stellar objects closely spaced on the sky.

We present astrometric results of phase-referencing VLBI observations of 22 GHz H2O maser and 43 GHz SiO maser emission towards the red hypergiant NML Cyg using VLBA. We obtained an annual parallax of 0.62 ± 0.04 mas, corresponding to a distance of 1.61+0.13−0.11 kpc. With a VLA observation in its largest (A) configuration at 43 GHz, we barely resolve the radio photosphere of NML Cyg, and find a uniform-disk diameter of 44 ± 16 mas.

We report a trigonometric parallax measurement for the H2O masers around the protoplanetary nebula OH 231.8+4.2 carried out with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). Based on astrometric monitoring for 1 year, we measured a parallax of 0.65 ± 0.01 mas, corresponding to a distance of 1.54 +0.02−0.01 kpc. The spatial distribution of H2O masers is consistent with that found in the previous studies. After removing the average proper motion of 1.4 mas yr−1, corresponding to 10 km s−1, the internal motions of the H2O maser spots indicate a bipolar outflow.

We monitored the 22 GHz maser line in the lensed quasar MG J0414+0534 at z = 2.64 with the 300-m Arecibo telescope for almost two years to detect possible additional maser components and to measure a potential velocity drift of the lines. The main maser line profile is complex and can be resolved into a number of broad features with line widths of 30-160 km s−1. A new maser component was tentatively detected in October 2008 at a velocity of +470 km s−1. After correcting for the estimated lens magnification, we find that the H2O isotropic luminosity of the maser in MG J0414+0534 is ~26,000 solar luminosities, making this source the most luminous ever discovered. Both the main line peak and continuum flux densities are surprisingly stable throughout the period of the observations. An upper limit on the velocity drift of the main peak of the line has been estimated from our observations and is of the order of 2 km s−1 per year. We discuss the results of the monitoring in terms of the possible nature of the maser emission, associated with an accretion disk or a radio jet. This is the first time that such a study is performed in a water maser source at high redshift, potentially allowing us to study the parsec-scale environment around a powerful radio source at cosmological distances.

We report trigonometric parallx measurements for H2O masers around the protoplanetary nebula OH 231.8+4.2 carried out with the Very Long Baseline Array. Based on astrometric monitoring for 1 year, we measured a trigonometric parallax of 0.89 ± 0.04 mas, corresponding to a distance of 1.12+0.05−0.05 kpc. This is the most accurate distance to OH 231.8+4.2, and the first one based on an annual parallax measurement. The distribution and internal motions of the H2O masers are consistent with the bipolar outflow suggested in literatures.

We have measured the distance to the high-mass star-forming region G59.7+0.1 (IRAS 19410+2336) and W3OH. Their distances, 2.20 ± 0.11 kpc and 1.95 ± 0.04 kpc, respectively, were determined by triangulation using Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of 12.2 GHz methanol masers phase-referenced to compact extragalactic radio sources. In addition to the distances, we have also obtained their proper motions.

We performed phase-referencing VLBI astrometric observations of the H2O maser source IRAS 02395+6244, located well beyond the solar circle. We measured its heliocentric distance to be 5.49 ± 0.80 kpc, implying a Galactocentric distance of 12.5 ± 0.5 kpc and a distance of 270 ± 40 pc above the Galactic plane.

Measuring the proper motions and geometric distances of galaxies within the Local Group is very important for our understanding of its history, present state and future. Currently, proper motion measurements using optical methods are limited only to the closest companions of the Milky Way. However, given that VLBI provides the best angular resolution in astronomy and phase-referencing techniques yield astrometric accuracies of ≈ 10 micro-arcseconds, measurements of proper motions and angular rotation rates of galaxies out to a distance of ~ 1 Mpc are feasible. This paper presents results of VLBI observations in regions of H2O maser activity of the Local Group galaxies M33 and IC 10. Two masing regions in M33 are on opposite sides of the galaxy. This allows a comparison of the angular rotation rate (as measured by the VLBI observations) with the known inclination and rotation speed of the Hi gas disk leading to a determination of a geometric distance of 730 ± 100 ± 135 kpc. The first error indicates the statistical error of the proper-motion measurements, while the second error is the systematic error of the rotation model. Within the errors, this distance is consistent with the most recent Cepheid distance to M33. Since all position measurements were made relative to an extragalactic background source, the proper motion of M33 has also been measured. This provides a three dimensional velocity vector of M33, showing that this galaxy is moving with a velocity of 190 ± 59 km s−1 relative to the Milky Way. For IC 10, we obtain a motion of 215 ± 42 km s−1 relative to the Milky Way. These measurements promise a new handle on dynamical models for the Local Group and the mass and dark matter halo of Andromeda and the Milky Way.

We have measured the distance to the high-mass star-forming region G59.7+0.1, which harbors the far-infra-red source IRAS 19410+2336. The distance is 2.20 ± 0.11 kpc and was determined by triangulation using Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of 12.2 GHz methanol masers phase-referenced to two compact extragalactic radio sources.

So far, few direct sub-arcsecond resolution studies exist of the dense material that, according to the standard unified scheme, should obscure the central engines of radio galaxies. In the following, observations are presented that highlight the nuclear environment of the prototypical X-shaped FR II galaxy 3C 403. To date, it is the only powerful radio galaxy known to host a water megamaser.

Astrometric observations with the VLBA with accuracies approaching ~ 10 μas are being conducted in order to better understand the Galaxy. The location of Sgr A* on infrared images can be determined with an accuracy of a few mas, using stars with SiO maser emission as a calibration grid for infrared images. The apparent proper motion of Sgr A*, which is dominated by the effects of the orbit of the Sun around the Galactic center, has been measured with high accuracy. This measurement strongly constrains Θ0R0 and offers a dynamical definition of the Galactic plane with Sgr A* at its origin. The intrinsic motion of Sgr A* is very small and comparable to that expected for a supermassive black hole. When combined with infrared results, this provides overwhelming evidence that Sgr A* is a supermassive black hole. Finally, we are engaged in a large project to map the spiral structure and kinematics of the Galaxy. Preliminary trigonometric parallaxes, obtained with the VLBA, to eight massive star forming regions are presented.

In the course of following up compact methanol masers at 6.7 GHz which were found in the Torun blind survey (Szymczak et al. 2002), we discovered a ring structure in the source G23.657−00.127. This source provides interesting insights into whether methanol masers arise in rotating disks around massive stars, in their outflows, or behind shocks. By monitoring the 12.2 GHz masers, which fortunately follow the same structure, we hope to resolve the kinematics of the ring. Moreover, the symmetry of the source points to the existence of a central source. Early results on the nature of this source indicate the existence of a hyper–compact H II region.

So far all relativistically boosted jets with superluminal motion have only been detected in normal radio galaxies that have early-type host galaxies. We have now discovered superluminal motion in the Seyfert 1 galaxy III Zw 2, classified as a spiral. Spectral and spatial evolution are closely linked. Since III Zw 2 is part of a sample of so-called radio-intermediate quasars (RIQ), it confirms earlier predictions of superluminal motion for this source, based on the argument that RIQs could be relativistically boosted jets in radio-weak quasars and Seyfert galaxies.
