A version of the Dade-Cline equivalence from Clifford theory is proved for non-normal subgroups of a finite group in the context of a synthesis of a number of equivalences that arise in the representation theory of groups and algebras.

The class CR of completely regular semigroups (unions of groups or algebras with the associative binary operation of multiplication and the unary operation of inversion subject to the laws x = xx-1, (x−1)-1 = x and xx-1 = x-1x) is a variety. Among the important subclasses of CR are the classes M of monoids and I of idempotent generated members. For each C ∈ {I, M}, there are associated mappings ν → ν ∩ C and ν → (Ν ∩ C), the variety generated by ν ∩ C. The lattice theoretic properties of these mappings and the interactions between these mappings are studied.

A balanced tournament design, BTD(n), defined on a 2n—set V is an arrangement of the () distinct unordered pairs of the elements of V into an n × 2n − 1 array such that (1) every element of V is contained in precisely one cell of each column, and (2) every element of V is contained in at most two cells of each row. In this paper, we investigate the existence of balanced tournament designs with a pair of almost orthogonal resolutions. These designs can be used to construct doubly resolvable (ν, 3, 2)- BIBD s and, in our smallest applications, have been used to construct previously unknown doubly resolvable (ν, 3, 2)- B I B D s.

Lie algebras whose finite-dimensional modules decompose into direct sums of modules involving only one type of irreducible are investigated. Some vanishing theorems for the cohomology of some infinite-dimensional Lie algebras are thereby obtained.

An extension R1 of a right chain ring R is called immediate if R1 has the same residue division ring and the same lattice of principal right ideals as R. Properties of such immediate extensions are studied. It is proved that for every R, maximal immediate extensions exist, but that in contrast to the commutative case maximal right chain rings are not necessarily linearly compact.

A completely regular semigroup is a semigroup which is a union of groups. The class CR of completely regular semigroups forms a variety. On the lattice L (CR) of completely regular semigroup varieties we define two closure operations which induce complete congruences. The consideration of a third complete congruence on L (CR) yields a subdirect decomposition of L (CR). Using these results we show that L (CR) is arguesian. This confirms the (tacit) conjecture that L (CR) is modular.

For a ZG-lattice A, the nth partial free Euler characteristic εn(A) is defined as the infimum of all where F* varies over all free resolutions of A. It is shown that there exists a stably free resolution E* of A which realises εn(A) for all n≥0 and that the function n → εn(A) is ultimately polynomial no residue classes. The existence of E* is established with the help of new invariants σn(A) of A. These are elements in certain image groups of the projective class group of ZG. When ZG allows cancellation, E* is a minimal free resolution and is essentially unique. When A is periodic, E* is ultimately periodic of period a multiple of the projective period of A.

The known characterization of the Mathieu group M12 by the structure of the centralizer of a 2-central involution is based on the application of the theory of exceptional characters and uses in addition a block theoretic result which asserts that a simple group of order |M12| is isomorphic to M12. The details of the proof of the latter result had never been published. We show here that M12 can be handled in a completely elementary and group theoretical way.

New oscillation criteria are given for second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations with alternating coefficients. The results involve a condition obtained by Kamenev for linear differential equations. The obtained criterion for superlinear differential equations is a complement of the work established by Kwong and Wong, and Philos, for sublinear differential equations and by Yan for linear differential equations.

Let G = ⊕∞i=0Zp, where p is a prime, let s be the shift mapping the i th summand of G to the (i+1) st and let ω be a 2 cocycle on G with values in S1, for which ω (s(g), s(h)) = ω (g, h). If Ω (ej, ek) = Ω (ek, ej) whenever │j - k│ is sufficiently large, where ei is the generator of the i th summand of G, then it is shown that the twisted group C* -algebra C*(G, ω) is isomorphic to the UHF algebra UHF (p∞). An immediate consequence, by results of Bures and Yin, is the existence of infinitely many non-conjugate shifts on UHF (p∞).

We prove the following results: (1) A quasi-metrizable space is compact if and only if every compatible quasi-metric has a quasi-metric left d—sequential completion. (2) A quasipseudometrizable space is countably compact if and only if every compatible quasi-pseudometric is pointwise bounded. (3) A quasi-pseudometrizable space is compact if and only if every compatible quasi-pseudometric is precompact.

We investigate the identities which hold in the associated Lie rings of groups of prime exponent. The multilinear identities which hold in these Lie rings are known, and it is conjectured that all the identities which hold in these Lie rings are consequences of multilinear ones. This is known to be the case for the associated Lie rings of two generator groups of exponent 5, and we provide some additional avidence for the conjecture by confirming that it also holds true for the associated Lie rings of three generator groups of exponent five.

We discuss some general properties and limitations of the concept of outer Fitting pairs introduced earlier by the author. We describe an outer Fitting pair as a co-cone in the category of what we call outer groups (roughly speaking the category of groups modulo inner automorphisms). It is shown that generally no universal outer Fitting pair exists, whence this category is not co-complete. Additionally it is shown that if the target group of an outer Fitting pair is finite, then the much more amenable concept of normal Fitting pairs (that is, co-cones in the category of groups) applies.

The surjective additive maps on the Lie ring of skew-Hermitian linear transformations on a finite-dimensional vector space over a division ring which preserve the set of rank 1 elements are determined. As an application, maps preserving commuting pairs of transformations are determined.

The structure of semigroups with atomistic congruence lattices (that is, each congruence is the supremum of the atoms it contains) is studied. For the weakly reductive case the problem of describing the structure of such semigroups is solved up to simple and congruence free semigroups, respectively. As applications, all commutative, finite, completely semisimple semigroups, respectively, with atomistic congruence lattices are described.

John Conway's analysis in 1968 of the automorphism group of the Leech lattice and his discovery of three sporadic simple groups led to the immediate speculation that other Z-lattices might have interesting automorphism groups which give rise to (possibly new) finite simple groups. (The classification theorem for the finite simple groups has since told us that no new finite simple groups can arise in this or any other way.) For example in 1973, M. Broué and M. Enguehard constructed, in every dimension 2n, an even lattice (unimodular if n is odd) whose automorphism group is related to the simple Chevalley group of type Dn. This family of integral lattices received attention and acclaim in the subsequent literature. What escaped the attention of this literature, however, was the fact that these lattices had been discovered years earlier. Indeed in 1959, E. S. Barnes and G. E. Wall gave a uniform construction for a large class of positive definite Z-lattices in dimensions 2n which include those of Broué and Enguehard as special cases. The present article introduces an abstracted and generalized version of the construction of Barnes and Wall. In addition, there are some new observations about Barnes-Wall lattices. In particular, it is shown how to associate to each such lattice a continuous, piecewise linear graph in the plane from which all the important properties of the lattice, for example, its minimum, whether it is integral, unimodular, even, or perfect can be read off directly.

Suppose λ is an isolated eigenvalue of the (bounded linear) operator T on the Banach space X and the algebraic multiplicity of λ is finite. Let Tn be a sequence of operators on X that converge to T pointwise, that is, Tnx → Tx for every x ∈ X. If ‖(T − Tn)Tn‖ and ‖Tn(T − Tn)‖ converge to 0 then Tn is strongly stable at λ.

The theory of multimeasures (set valued measures), has its origins in mathematical economics and in particular in equilibrium theory for exchange economies with production, in which the coalitions and not the individual agents are the basic economic units (see Vind [25] and Hildenbrand [15]). Since then the subject of multimeasures has been developed extensively. Important contributions were made, among others, by Artstein [1], Costé [8], [9], Costé and Pallu de la Barrière [10], Drewnowski [12], Godet-Thobie [13], Hiai [14] and Pallu de la Barrière [17]. Further applications in mathematical economics can be found in Klein and Thompson [16] and Papageorgiou [19].

In this paper we consider O. Bonnet III-isometry (or BIII-isometry) of surfaces in 3-dimensional Euclidean space E3 Suppose a map F: M → M* is a diffeomorphism, and F* (III*) = III, ki(m) = k*i (m*), i = 1, 2, where m ∈ M, m* ∈ M*, m* = F (m), ki and k*i are the principal curvatures of surfaces M and M* at the points m and m*, respectively, III and III* are the third fundmental forms of M and M*, respectively. In this case, we call F an O. Bonnet III-isometry from M to M*. O. Bonnet I-isometries were considered in references [1]-[5].

We distinguish three cases about BIII-surfaces, which admits a non-trivial BIII-ismetry. We obtain some geometric properties of BIII-surfaces and BIII-isometries in these three cases; see Theorems 1, 2, 3 (in Section 2). We study some special BIII-surfaces: the minimal BIII-surfaces; BIII-surfaces of revolution; and BIII-surfaces with constant Gaussian curvature; see Theorems 4, 5, 6 (in Section 3).

We consider two unique products for a given p—adic integer x with leading coefficient 1, where anbn ∈ {0, 1,… p − 1}. It is shown that, for almost all such x relative to Haar measure on the p—adic integers, the sequences (an), (bn) are normal to base p, and have standard normal distribution functions.
