Une enquête a été réalisée en 1995, afin d’appréhender le niveau de connaissance des Suisses sur le thème du radon. En 2008, une deuxième enquête, basée sur une méthodologie similaire, a été menée par l’OFSP. La nouvelle étude a montré qu’environ 40 % de la population suisse a déjà entendu parler du radon, ce qui représente une augmentation de 8 % par rapport à l’enquête de 1995. La majorité des personnes interrogées savaient que le radon provoque le cancer du poumon, mais pensaient que le gaz induit aussi d’autres effets sur la santé, notamment la migraine et les affections dermatologiques. Par ailleurs, les personnes âgées, avec un niveau élevé de formation et propriétaires immobiliers connaissaient tendanciellement mieux la problématique du radon que le grand public. Les habitants des régions à risque élevé ont obtenus des résultats nettement meilleurs, ce qui démontre que les campagnes d’information dans ces régions ont porté leurs fruits. Par contre, un effort d’information supplémentaire est nécessaire dans les communes à risque léger et moyen, dans lesquelles la majeure partie de la population réside.

En 2007, le service de radiologie de l’Hôpital Trousseau (Paris) et l’IRSN ont initié une analyse détaillée des doses délivrées lors d’examens scanographiques chez l’enfant. Cette étude a porté sur trois types d’examen (thorax, abdomen-pelvis et rochers) et trois tranches d’âge (nouveau né à 1 an, 4 à 6 ans et 9 à 11 ans). Une première analyse des doses a été réalisée a posteriori sur l’activité du second semestre 2006. Elle a montré que les protocoles d’acquisition du scanner, qui satisfaisaient aux recommandations dosimétriques en vigueur, étaient mal respectés dans le service : les pratiques étaient hétérogènes et les valeurs moyennes de PDL supérieures aux recommandations. Après ces premiers résultats, une action de sensibilisation à l’optimisation des doses a été menée auprès du personnel et les protocoles d’acquisition du scanner ont été optimisés. L’analyse dosimétrique reprise en 2008 suivant le schéma de 2006 a montré une harmonisation des pratiques au sein du service, une diminution significative des PDL moyens (-50 % par exemple en scanographie thoracique) et le respect systématique des recommandations dosimétriques pour les trois examens étudiés.

The activity concentrations of potassium, uranium and thorium in minerals and soil samples from a mining site in Ibadan, Southwestern Nigeria were measured using gamma ray spectroscopy method. Effective dose per annum has been calculated from the activity concentrations of dominant gamma-emitting natural radionuclides, potassium, uranium and thorium. Samples collected include minerals (beryl, quartz and feldspar), soil samples from the mining pits, heaps and undisturbed land around the mining site. The activity concentrations of 40K, 238U and 232Th, respectively in Bq kg-1 in the mineral samples were as follows: 1985 ± 16, 4.8 ± 0.9 and 11.8 ± 5.8 for beryl sample, 115.1 ± 27.9, 5.0 ± 1.3 and 6.3 ± 5.0 for feldspar samples and 1421 ± 122, <4.8 and 20.1 ± 3.5 for quartz samples. For the soil samples, the mean activity concentrations of 40K, 238U and 232Th, respectively, were 314.2 ± 5.7, 27.7 ± 2.6 and 11.5 ± 5.9 Bq kg-1 for soil samples from the pits and 278.1 ± 5.4, 21.1 ± 2.0 and 15.3 ± 7.5 Bq kg-1 for soil samples from heaps. The mean activity concentrations of soil samples from the undisturbed land around the mining site were 194.3 ± 25.2, 14.5 ± 5.1 and 13.3 ± 5.9 Bq kg-1 for 40K, 238U and 232Th, respectively. The effective dose to which the miners are exposed according to exposure scenarios were calculated as 89.9 μSv y-1 for digging and handling of soil and mineral samples in the pit and 63.6 μSv y-1 for handling of soil and mineral samples at the heaps.

Precise and accurate estimation of natural radioactivity is essential in order to appraise the radiation dose to the member of public due to various intakes. In the present study, an attempt has been made to estimate the uranium content in packaged drinking water by laser induced fluorimetry and then to calculate the committed effective dose. Sixty packaged drinking water samples of different brands were analysed for uranium content. The total uranium content in these samples was found to be in the range of 0.04–3.88 µg l-1. The concentration of uranium is comparable with other reported worldwide values except a few high values such as 0.5–6000 µg l-1 in Finland, 0.1–28 µg l-1 in China, 0.1–40 µg l-1 in Switzerland and 0.04–1400 µg l-1 in Jordan and much lower than the drinking water limit of 15 µg l-1 (WHO, 2004) and 30 µg l-1 (USEPA, 2000a). The radiation dose due to uranium ingestion through packaged drinking water was found to vary from 0.08–3.19 µSv y-1, with an average dose of 1.21 µSv y-1.

In case of accidental exposure to radiation, it is necessary to establish as soon as possible a dosimetry report for each victim. In most cases, this report is based on medical images of the victim, enabling the construction of a personalized realistic numerical model, also called a voxel phantom. Unfortunately it is not always possible to perform the medical imaging of the victim since the technology may be unavailable or to avoid additional exposure to radiation. In such cases, the commonly used method is to represent the victim with a numerical model like the “Reference Man”, a voxelized phantom representative of the average male individual. The treatment accuracy depends on the diagnosis precision and, consequently, on the similarity of the phantom and/to the victim. A precise dosimetry evaluation requires a personalised and realistic phantom whose biometric characteristics match the victim; such model is often unavailable. The Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) is a problem solving method for the conception of intelligent systems. It imitates the analysis, understanding and reconstruction of the human intelligence. The ReEPh project (Research of Equivalent Phantom) proposes to use the CBR principles to retrieve from a set of phantoms, the most adapted one to the irradiated victim. For this study, the ReEPh platform retrieves, stores and compares existing phantoms to a victim. A graphic interface enables the user to compare victim’s characteristics to the ones of the most similar phantoms available in the database. This defines a similarity index presenting the equivalence between the victim and the suggested phantom. Moreover, a confidence index is also assessed to define the uncertainty implied by the RaPC choice procedure.

L'objectif principal de cette étude est de comparer les rendements radiochimiques des cassures simple et double brin (CSB et CDB) générées au niveau des hélices de la molécule d'ADN, suite à la prise en compte de deux spectres électroniques de désintégration de l'iode-125. En effet, l'emploi combiné de la méthode de Monte Carlo du type au coup par coup et de l'équation de diffusion $(\frac{\partial C_i}{\partial t}=D_i\nable^2C_i+S)$ permet de simuler le transport des électrons, et les réactions chimiques dues à la diffusion des entités crées tout au long des processus physico-chimique et chimique considérés (e-aq, H, OH, H2, H2O2, et H3O+). Nous tenons compte dans cette étude d'un modèle d'ADN complexe (nucléosome) et de son enveloppe d'hydratation, tout comme nous tenons compte également de l'effet radio-protecteur des inhibiteurs tels que le formiate (formiate de sodium, HCOO-). En outre, la comparaison de nos résultats à ceux obtenus par d'autres modèles, met en évidence d'une part une concordance certaine et d'autre part le pouvoir d'adaptation des codes élaborés à différents modèles d'ADN.
