Fatoua villosa (mulberry weed) is a new and invasive weed of container nurseries and landscapes in the southeastern United States. Studies were conducted to determine the effects of light, planting depth, mulch depth, and temperature on mulberry weed seed germination and seedling emergence. Light stimulated mulberry weed seed germination, with less than 5% of seeds germinating in the dark compared with 48 to 60% germinating in the light. In all emergence studies, the highest number of seedlings emerged when seeds were placed on the soil surface, with emergence decreasing as planting or mulch depth increased. Planting depths of ≥ 1.8 cm or mulch depths of ≥ 3.7 cm reduced mulberry weed emergence by ≥ 90%. These data suggest that mulch would control mulberry weed effectively. To study the effects of temperature on germination, two seed batches collected locally in October 1998 and August 1999 were used. Maximum germination of seeds collected in 1998 occurred at 25 C, with germination decreasing at higher temperatures and no germination at lower than 15 C or over 40 C. For seeds collected in 1999, maximum germination occurred from 19 to 29 C, with germination decreasing with temperatures above 29 C or below 19 C. At temperatures of 15 and 42 C germination, percentages were 71 and 11%, respectively. Seedlings germinated at 15 C developed slowly but otherwise appeared normal. For both seed lots, seedlings were stunted and chlorotic at ≥ 38 C. That mulberry weed seed germinated over a wide range of temperatures suggests its potential to emerge throughout most of spring, summer, and autumn in the southeastern United States.

Field studies were conducted to evaluate soybean injury and yield reduction from foliar applications of mesotrione. Mesotrione was applied at 1.1, 3.2, 11, 35, and 105 g ai/ha to ‘BT 386C’ soybeans at the V1 stage of growth. All rates of mesotrione resulted in visual injury to soybean at 7 and 14 d after treatment (DAT). Overall soybean injury from mesotrione was greatest at 14 DAT, with 25 to 78% injury observed. By 28 DAT, soybean injury was 31 and 66% from mesotrione at 35 and 105 g/ha, respectively, and less than 10% from mesotrione at 1.1, 3.2, and 11 g/ha. Soybean yield was reduced 11 and 22% by mesotrione at 35 and 105 g/ha, respectively. No reduction in soybean yield was observed from mesotrione at rates up to 11 g/ha. Regression analysis indicated that soybean injury from mesotrione at 28 DAT was the best predictor of yield loss (r2 = 0.77), compared with injury evaluations at 7, 14, and 56 DAT. Greenhouse studies were conducted to determine whether soybean injury from mesotrione was affected by soybean growth stage and variety. Soybean varieties BT 386C, ‘Asgrow 4602RR’, ‘Pioneer 94B01’, and ‘LS 930375’ were more sensitive to mesotrione at the VC growth stage than at the V1 and V2 stages. At the V2 stage, Asgrow 4602RR was three to five times more sensitive to mesotrione than the other three varieties.

Multilocational characterization of selected herbaceous and shrub legumes was carried out over a 3-yr period at lowland and midlatitude sites in the moist savanna agroecological zone in Nigeria where a south–north gradient exists for rainfall, length of growing season, and insolation. One study site each was located in coastal–derived savanna (DS), southern Guinea savanna (SGS), and northern Guinea savanna (NGS). A fourth site was located in the plateau of the NGS. Only one legume cover crop, lablab, produced adequate ground cover and good weed suppression in three locations irrespective of rainfall amount, duration, and distribution. Velvetbean was superior to other legume cover crops in the lowland savanna locations where rainfall exceeded 1,100 mm/yr but not in the plateau of the NGS where rainfall was less than 1,000 mm. Pigeonpea grew luxuriantly and produced canopy cover that effectively suppressed weeds in the DS where rainfall was high. Centurion grew well and suppressed weeds effectively only in the SGS site where rainfall of 1,120 mm was well distributed over a 5-mo period. Sunnhemp grew well and suppressed weeds only in the NGS study sites where rainfall duration was 4 mo and the length of the growing period was short. Weed density was negatively correlated (P < 0.05) with percentage ground cover of those legume cover crops that were effective in weed suppression in all locations. Redundancy analysis revealed significant associations between weed species and cover crops at each of the locations.

A study was conducted in 1995 and 1996 to determine the effect of soybean planting date, tillage level, and glyphosate application on sicklepod control and seed production. Soybean was planted in April, May, June, and July into conventional and no-till seedbeds. Herbicide programs evaluated were metribuzin plus chlorimuron preemergence (PRE) followed by (fb) chlorimuron postemergence (POST) (standard program [STD]), metribuzin plus chlorimuron PRE fb glyphosate POST as-needed, and glyphosate POST as-needed. Control was similar across planting dates in both years with slight variations due to weather. The July planting date had the lowest total sicklepod seed production over the 2-yr study. Sicklepod control was better in conventional tillage, but soybean yields were greater in no-till. Herbicide programs that included glyphosate provided greater sicklepod control, lower sicklepod seed production, and higher soybean yields than the STD. Use of glyphosate in combination with later planting dates, especially July, has the potential to prevent sicklepod seed accumulation in the soil while maintaining yields in a dryland soybean production system.

Field studies were conducted to evaluate the tolerance of Italian ryegrass and the metribuzin-sensitive winter wheat cultivar Dozier to metribuzin, chlorsulfuron, flufenacet plus metribuzin, chlorsulfuron plus metsulfuron, diclofop, and combinations of these herbicides applied preemergence (PRE) and postemergence (POST) to wheat in the two- to three-leaf (2–3 LF) at Feekes' stage 1 and to one to two tiller wheat (TILL) at Feekes' stage 3. Italian ryegrass control was 80% or greater with diclofop at all rates and application timings; flufenacet plus metribuzin PRE at all rates; metribuzin POST at 2–3 LF at all rates; and chlorsulfuron or chlorsulfuron plus metsulfuron PRE followed by (fb) metribuzin POST at 2–3 LF. Control of 2–3 LF Italian ryegrass was inconsistent with flufenacet plus metribuzin, chlorsulfuron, and chlorsulfuron plus metsulfuron. Italian ryegrass control was poor with flufenacet plus metribuzin TILL, metribuzin PRE, and metribuzin TILL. Metribuzin applied alone and after chlorsulfuron or chlorsulfuron plus metsulfuron injured wheat. Wheat recovered from flufenacet plus metribuzin injury. However, injury from metribuzin at 280 g ai/ha PRE, 2–3 LF, and at 420 g/ha, 2–3 LF, resulted in season-long injury. Yields were significantly reduced because of metribuzin (PRE, 2–3 LF, or TILL) injury and also by chlorsulfuron or chlorsulfuron plus metsulfuron (PRE) fb metribuzin (2–3 LF).

Diphenylether herbicides may be viable options for postemergence (POST) control of common waterhemp in soybean. A 2-yr field research project was conducted to determine whether common waterhemp control is influenced by application timing and rate of acifluorfen, fomesafen, and lactofen. Common waterhemp control was 9, 9, and 8% greater 7, 14, and 21 d after treatment, respectively, after the early postemergence (EPOST) application timing compared with the POST application timing. Lactofen provided greater common waterhemp control than did acifluorfen or fomesafen, and only the highest application of lactofen provided greater than 85% common waterhemp control 21 d after POST application. No significant differences in common waterhemp dry weight were determined among the three rates of acifluorfen, fomesafen, and lactofen applied EPOST. The highest application rates of fomesafen and lactofen reduced common waterhemp dry weight more than did the lowest application rates applied POST. The highest application rate of fomesafen also reduced common waterhemp dry weight more than did the intermediate application rate. Single degree of freedom contrasts indicated that all diphenylether herbicides reduced common waterhemp dry weight more than did imazethapyr.

Experiments were conducted to determine peanut tolerance to CGA-362622 applied preemergence (PRE) and postemergence (POST) and to determine the potential for CGA-362622 applied PRE and POST to cotton to injure peanut grown in rotation the following year. CGA-362622 at 3.75 and 7.5 g ai/ha applied PRE visually injured peanut 11 and 16%, respectively, at 5 wk after treatment (WAT) but did not influence peanut yield. POST treatments at 3.75 and 7.5 g/ha injured peanut 63 and 93%, respectively, at 4 WAT and reduced peanut stand by 53 and 89% at 11 WAT, respectively. Peanut pod yield was reduced 73.1 and 97.9% by CGA-362622 POST at 3.75 and 7.5 g/ha, respectively, compared with the untreated weed-free control. CGA-362622 PRE at 3.75 and 7.5 g/ha reduced peanut pod yield 7.5 and 12.6%, respectively. Cotton was injured 9% or less by CGA-362622 PRE or POST at 3.75 or 7.5 g/ha and up to 25% with CGA-362622 POST at 15 g/ha. However, CGA-362622 did not influence weed-free cotton lint yields, regardless of method or rate of application. Peanuts grown in rotation were not injured, and yields were not influenced by CGA-362622 applied PRE or POST the previous year to cotton.

Field experiments were conducted in 1994 and 1995 at Vegreville, Legal, and Lacombe, AB, to determine the effects of a preharvest application of glyphosate on seedling emergence and growth of field pea. Glyphosate was applied at 0.9 kg ai/ha at each of the three crop development stages, as determined by seed moisture content (SMC), to determinate (‘Ascona’ and ‘Radley’) and indeterminate (‘Miko’ and ‘Trapper’) cultivars. Applying glyphosate when the SMC was less than 30% had little to no effect on seedling emergence but reduced seedling shoot fresh weight in two of six experiments. Applying glyphosate at SMC above 40% reduced seedling emergence and shoot fresh weight in two and three of the six experiments, respectively. Reductions in seedling emergence and shoot fresh weight were greater from seeds collected from the top than from seeds collected from the bottom one-third of sprayed plants. Differences in response between determinate and indeterminate cultivars occurred, but there was no consistent trend. Given the variable maturity in most fields and on individual pea plants, applications of preharvest glyphosate to peas destined for seed production may decrease seed germination and biomass accumulation.

Field studies were conducted in 1995 and 1996 to investigate postemergence tank mixtures of sethoxydim with various acetolactate synthase (ALS)- and non–ALS-inhibitor herbicides for weed control in sethoxydim-resistant (SR) corn. Giant foxtail control with sethoxydim was 96% and was equal to control with tank mixtures of sethoxydim plus bentazon, dicamba, dicamba plus atrazine, bromoxynil, and nicosulfuron plus bromoxynil. Giant foxtail control with sethoxydim plus atrazine, sethoxydim plus bentazon plus atrazine, and sethoxydim plus ALS-inhibiting herbicides plus 2,4-D was reduced to 60 to 89%. Common ragweed control was equal to or above 91% for tank mixtures that included bentazon plus atrazine, dicamba, dicamba plus atrazine, halosulfuron plus 2,4-D, and CGA 152005 plus primisulfuron plus 2,4-D, and the tank mixture of nicosulfuron plus bromoxynil. Common lambsquarters control was equal to or above 91% from all broadleaf herbicide treatments except bentazon and the tank mixture of halosulfuron plus 2,4-D. In these studies, only tank mixtures of sethoxydim plus dicamba or dicamba plus atrazine controlled giant foxtail, common ragweed, and common lambsquarters equal to or greater than 91% in SR corn.

Field research conducted for 3 yr evaluated weed control in glyphosate-resistant soybean with glyphosate applied alone and in mixtures with reduced rates of the broadleaf herbicides acifluorfen, CGA-277476 (proposed name: oxasulfuron), chlorimuron, fomesafen, or lactofen. Barnyardgrass was controlled at least 95% with glyphosate at 840 and 1,120 g ai/ha, and control was not antagonized with any of the mixtures. At 14 d after treatment (DAT), wild poinsettia and prickly sida were controlled at least 90% with all glyphosate treatments. Control remained greater than 90% 28 DAT in one of the 2 yr, but in the other year, wild poinsettia was controlled 80%, and prickly sida was controlled 43% with the high rate of glyphosate. Acifluorfen or fomesafen (210 and 315 g ai/ha), or lactofen (112 and 168 g ai/ha) applied with glyphosate increased wild poinsettia control to 91 to 95% and prickly sida to 60 to 83%. At 14 DAT, pitted morningglory control improved in most cases when acifluorfen, fomesafen, or lactofen was applied with glyphosate. Hemp sesbania control was increased when glyphosate was applied with these same herbicides as well as CGA-277476 (39 and 59 g ai/ha) and chlorimuron (4.5 and 6.7 g ai/ha). But by 28 DAT, improvement in weed control with glyphosate and broadleaf herbicide mixtures was noted only in 1998, when pitted morningglory and hemp sesbania were larger at time of application (15 to 18 cm). Glyphosate alone in 1998 controlled these weeds no more than 30%, and only for hemp sesbania was control consistently more than 80% with the addition of acifluorfen or lactofen. At 28 DAT in 1999 and 2000, when weeds were no more than 10 cm, pitted morningglory was controlled 91 and 98%, respectively, and hemp sesbania 88 and 100%, respectively, with glyphosate alone at 1,120 g/ha. Soybean injury 28 DAT, consisting of foliar chlorosis and height reduction, was as much as 14, 13, and 23% for the acifluorfen, chlorimuron, and lactofen treatments, respectively, but no more than 6% for the CGA-277476 and fomesafen treatments. When weed control with glyphosate alone was at least 85%, addition of broadleaf herbicides did not improve soybean yield.

Row spacing affects the time of canopy closure, thus influencing the growth and development of both crop and weeds. Field studies were conducted in 1999, 2000, and 2001 at Mead, NE, and 2000 and 2001 at Concord in eastern Nebraska to determine the effects of three row spacings (19, 38, and 76 cm) on the critical time for weed removal (CTWR) in dryland soybean. A three-parameter logistic equation was fit to data relating relative crop yield to increasing duration of weed presence. In general, earliest CTWR occurred in the 76-cm rows, and coincided with the first trifoliate stage of soybean. Latest CTWR occurred in the 19-cm rows and coincided with the third trifoliate. The CTWR in 38-cm rows occurred at the second trifoliate. Practical implications are that planting soybean in wide rows reduces early-season crop tolerance to weeds requiring earlier weed management programs than in narrower rows.

The effect of spurred anoda competition in narrow- (35 cm) and wide-row (70 cm) soybean was studied in field experiments for 2 yr. Vigorous early soybean growth in narrow- compared with wide-row soybean resulted in lower radiation transmitted through the canopy, which can partially account for greater competitiveness of narrow-row than wide-row soybean. Soybean plant height was not significantly influenced by the row spacing. Relative yield total (RYT), which is the relationship between yield in mixtures and in monocultures of the crop or the weed and indicates resource complementarity, was equal to 1 with 12 spurred anoda/m2 in the year with less precipitation. Regardless of the row spacing, spurred anoda gave resource use complementarity with the crop (RYT > 1) in all other treatments; therefore, partial avoidance of competition in mixed species was evident. Soybean aggressivity, which takes into account the effect of competition on both the crop and the weed and indicates competitive ability, decreased with weed density in both row spacings. Soybean yield loss at harvest was linearly related to relative dry weight 40 d after planting. Weed-free narrow- and wide-row soybean produced similar yields. In the presence of the spurred anoda, soybean yield was greater in narrow-row compared with wide-row soybean only in the most humid year. A management system that uses quick canopy closure with narrow-row soybean can provide excellent soybean yield and suppression of low spurred anoda densities.

Field studies were conducted in 1999, 2000, and 2001 to evaluate mesotrione at 105 and 210 g ai/ha alone and in mixtures with imazethapyr at 70 g ai/ha and the prepackage mixture of imazethapyr at 47 g/ha plus imazapyr at 16 g ai/ha postemergence. Mixtures of mesotrione with imazethapyr and imazethapyr plus imazapyr controlled common ragweed, common lambsquarters, and morningglory species better than imazethapyr or imazethapyr plus imazapyr alone. Similarly, mixtures of mesotrione with these imidazolinone herbicides improved the control of giant foxtail over that by mesotrione alone. Crop injury did not exceed 11% with all treatments and appeared as transient stunting. Yields of corn treated with mixtures of mesotrione plus imidazolinone herbicides were highest in 2000 and 2001, when rainfall was higher than in 1999.

Studies were conducted to develop a weed management strategy for common purslane in lettuce based on available cultural and chemical control methods and an understanding of common purslane biology. A wide-band application of bensulide or pronamide reduced common purslane emergence compared with the standard narrow band. Both narrow and wide bands of pronamide as well as a wide band of bensulide reduced the time required to thin and hoe lettuce. The wide-band pronamide treatment reduced thinning time more than did the narrow band. Overall, none of the herbicide weed management expenses were lower for pronamide treatments than for bensulide and the control. Wide-band bensulide reduced weed management expenses compared with the control, whereas narrow bands did not. Common purslane plants uprooted 1 or 2 wk after emergence (WAE) did not produce any viable seed. Plants uprooted 3 WAE produced from 1 to 60 viable seeds, and seed production increased rapidly from 4 to 6 WAE. Flame and 2% (v/v) glyphosate treatments reduced seed production by uprooted common purslane.

Field research was conducted during 3 yr to evaluate response of rice and corn to simulated drift rates representing 12.5, 6.3, 3.2, 1.6, and 0.8% of the usage rates of 1,120 g ai/ha glyphosate (140, 70, 35, 18, and 9 g/ha, respectively) and 420 g ai/ha glufosinate (53, 26, 13, and 4 g/ha, respectively). Early-postemergence applications were made to two- to three-leaf rice and six-leaf corn, and late-postemergence applications to rice at panicle differentiation and to corn at nine-leaf stage (1 wk before tasseling). Crop injury was generally greater for the two highest rates of both herbicides when applied early. Little to no reduction in rice or corn height was observed with glufosinate. Glyphosate consistently reduced rice plant height when the two highest rates were applied early, and heading was delayed 2 to 5 d. In 2 of 3 yr, the highest rate of glyphosate reduced rice yield 99 and 67% when applied early and 54 and 29% when applied late. Germination of rice seeds from glyphosate-treated plants was reduced in 1 of 2 yr and for only the highest rate. For glufosinate, rice yield was reduced 30% and in only one year when applied late at the highest rate. Early application of glyphosate reduced corn yield an average of 22 to 78% for the three highest rates, but only for the highest rate at the late timing (33%). Corn yield was reduced an average of 13 and 11% for the highest rate of glufosinate at the early and late timings, respectively. In greenhouse studies, five rice varieties were equally sensitive, as were five corn varieties, to reduced rates of glyphosate and glufosinate.

A field study was conducted during 1999, 2000, and 2001 at Stoneville, MS, on a Dundee silty clay loam to determine the impact of a rye cover crop with one or two postemergence (POST) herbicide applications on weed control, yield, and net return in narrow-row glyphosate-resistant, glufosinate-resistant, and conventional soybean systems. Cover crop systems included no–cover crop conventional tillage (CT), no–cover crop no-tillage (NT), and rye NT, all with early POST (EPOST), EPOST followed by late POST (LPOST), and no-herbicide weed management. Weed control and net return among glyphosate-resistant, glufosinate-resistant, and conventional soybean systems were similar. One POST ($111/ha) application of herbicides was more profitable than two POST ($79/ha) applications regardless of soybean cultivar and cover crop system. Rye residue reduced total weed density by 9 and 27% and biomass by 19 and 38% compared with no–cover crop CT and NT, respectively. In the rye cover crop, input costs were higher because of the additional cost of seed, planting, and rye desiccation. The additional cost resulted in a lower net return with the rye cover crop ($29/ha) compared with the no–cover crop CT ($84/ha) or NT ($87/ha) system, even though soybean yield in the rye cover crop system was comparable to that from the no–cover crop CT and NT systems. These results showed that because of additional cost, rye cover crop–based soybean production was less profitable compared with existing no–cover crop–based production systems.

Field studies were conducted in 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000 to determine the effect of glyphosate (isopropyl amine salt) on rice injury and yield when applied postemergence at 0, 70, 140, and 280 g ai/ha to dry-seeded rice in the three- to four-leaf (3- to 4-L), midtiller (MT), panicle initiation (PI), and boot (BT) growth stages. Glyphosate at 140 and 280 g ai/ha applied at the 3- to 4-L, MT, and PI growth stages resulted in the greatest foliar injury, and 280 g ai/ha was more injurious than 140 g ai/ha at the first rating, with the exception of MT and PI 2000, where they were equal. Glyphosate treatments resulted in the least visible foliar injury when applied at the BT stage. Rough rice yield was reduced by glyphosate applied at 280 g/ha to rice in the MT growth stage three out of four years. Applied to rice at PI, glyphosate at 140 g/ha reduced yields two out of four years, and three out of four years when applied at 280 g/ha. BT-stage applications of glyphosate at 70, 140, and 280 g/ha reduced yields two out of four, three out of four, and four out of four years, respectively.

Field studies were conducted from 1996 through 1998 to evaluate control of broadleaf signalgrass and slender amaranth by clethodim, fluazifop-P-butyl, and fluazifop-P-butyl plus fenoxaprop-P-ethyl applied alone, in combination with pyrithiobac, or sequentially with pyrithiobac. Broadleaf signalgrass control with graminicides alone was 75 to 100%. Although broadleaf signalgrass control with clethodim was not reduced by pyrithiobac, control with fluazifop-P-butyl and fluazifop-P-butyl plus fenoxaprop-P-ethyl was reduced by pyrithiobac. Pyrithiobac controlled slender amaranth 85 to 100% when applied alone. However, slender amaranth control by pyrithiobac was inconsistent when pyrithiobac was applied in mixture or sequentially with graminicides. A reduction in slender amaranth control may have resulted from a combination of reduced graminicide efficacy and interference caused by broadleaf signalgrass with slender amaranth (pyrithiobac alone). Cotton yields were highest when pyrithiobac was applied 24 h after graminicides.

Greenhouse and field experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of nicosulfuron, primisulfuron, glyphosate, glufosinate, imazethapyr plus imazapyr, and quizalofop on johnsongrass biomass reduction, rhizome total nonstructural carbohydrate (TNC) content, and subsequent regrowth from rhizomes. In the greenhouse, johnsongrass plants originating from rhizome segments were controlled 88 to 97% with quizalofop, glyphosate, imazethapyr plus imazapyr, nicosulfuron, and primisulfuron and 56% with glufosinate 3 wk after treatment (WAT). Johnsongrass treated with quizalofop, glyphosate, and nicosulfuron did not regrow 6 WAT, whereas plants treated with primisulfuron, imazethapyr plus imazapyr, and glufosinate regrew from the rhizome of the treated plant. Rhizome TNC levels 3 WAT were not reduced by glufosinate or nicosulfuron, but they were reduced 64% by quizalofop, 32% by primisulfuron, 61% by glyphosate, and 29% by imazethapyr plus imazapyr. When rhizome TNC was reduced by 60% or more compared with nontreated plants, johnsongrass did not regrow from the treated rhizomes. In field experiments, nicosulfuron and glyphosate controlled johnsongrass 94 and 99%, respectively, whereas imazethapyr plus imazapyr (79%) and glufosinate (85%) provided less control 6 WAT.

Field studies were conducted in 1999, 2000, and 2001 to investigate weed control and glyphosate-resistant corn tolerance to postemergence applications of mesotrione at 70, 105, and 140 g ai/ha applied with and without glyphosate at 560 g ai/ha. Mesotrione alone and mixed with glyphosate controlled smooth pigweed greater than 97% and common lambsquarters 93 to 99%. Control of common ragweed and morningglory species was variable. Common ragweed control was generally best when mesotrione was applied at 105 or 140 g/ha, and control increased only in 2000 with the addition of glyphosate. Giant foxtail control was below 25% with all rates of mesotrione, but mixtures of mesotrione plus glyphosate controlled giant foxtail 65 to 75%. Mesotrione injured glyphosate-resistant corn 4 to 24% when averaged over glyphosate rates, and injury was usually increased by higher mesotrione rates, with rainfall after herbicide applications, and in mixtures with glyphosate. Injury was transient and did not reduce corn yields. Mesotrione injury on glyphosate-resistant corn was confirmed in the greenhouse, where all mesotrione treatments reduced glyphosate-resistant corn biomass 9 to 23% compared with the nontreated check.
