In this paper, we continue the study of the Raman amplification in plasmas that we initiated in [Colin and Colin, Diff. Int. Eqs.17 (2004) 297–330; Colin and Colin, J. Comput. Appl. Math.193 (2006) 535–562]. We point out that the Raman instability gives rise to three components. The first one is collinear to the incident laser pulse and counter propagates. In 2-D, the two other ones make a non-zero angle with the initial pulse and propagate forward. Furthermore they are symmetric with respect to the direction of propagation of the incident pulse. We construct a non-linear system taking into account all these components and perform some 2-D numerical simulations.

In this paper we certify that the same approach proposed in previous works by Chniti et al. [C. R. Acad. Sci.342 (2006) 883–886; CALCOLO45 (2008) 111–147; J. Sci. Comput.38 (2009) 207–228] can be applied to more general operators with strong heterogeneity in the coefficients. We consider here the case of reaction-diffusion problems with piecewise constant coefficients. The problem reduces to determining the coefficients of some transmission conditions to obtain fast convergence of domain decomposition methods. After explaining the theoretical results, we explicitly compute the coefficients in the transmission boundary conditions. The numerical results presented in this paper confirm the optimality properties.

We construct a Galerkin finite element method for the numerical approximation of weak solutions to a coupled microscopic-macroscopic bead-spring model that arises from the kinetic theory of dilute solutions of polymeric liquids with noninteracting polymer chains. The model consists of the unsteady incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in a bounded domain Ω ⊂ $\mathbb{R}^d$, d = 2 or 3, for the velocity and the pressure of the fluid, with an elastic extra-stress tensor as right-hand side in the momentum equation. The extra-stress tensor stems from the random movement of the polymer chains and is defined through the associated probability density function that satisfies a Fokker–Planck type parabolic equation, crucial features of which are the presence of a centre-of-mass diffusion term and a cut-off function $\beta^L(\cdot) :=\min(\cdot,L)$ in the drag and convective terms, where L ≫ 1. We focus on finitely-extensible nonlinear elastic, FENE-type, dumbbell models. We perform a rigorous passage to the limit as the spatial and temporal discretization parameters tend to zero, and show that a (sub)sequence of these finite element approximations converges to a weak solution of this coupled Navier–Stokes–Fokker–Planck system. The passage to the limit is performed under minimal regularity assumptions on the data. Our arguments therefore also provide a new proof of global existence of weak solutions to Fokker–Planck–Navier–Stokes systems with centre-of-mass diffusion and microscopic cut-off. The convergence proof rests on several auxiliary technical results including the stability, in the Maxwellian-weighted H1 norm, of the orthogonal projector in the Maxwellian-weighted L2 inner product onto finite element spaces consisting of continuous piecewise linear functions. We establish optimal-order quasi-interpolation error bounds in the Maxwellian-weighted L2 and H1 norms, and prove a new elliptic regularity result in the Maxwellian-weighted H2 norm.

A variant of the Total Overlapping Schwarz (TOS) method has been introduced in [Ben Belgacem et al., C. R. Acad. Sci., Sér. 1 Math.336 (2003) 277–282] as an iterative algorithm to approximate the absorbing boundary condition, in unbounded domains. That same method turns to be an efficient tool to make numerical zooms in regions of a particular interest. The TOS method enjoys, then, the ability to compute small structures one wants to capture and the reliability to obtain the behavior of the solution at infinity, when handling exterior problems. The main aim of the paper is to use this modified Schwarz procedure as a preconditioner to Krylov subspaces methods so to accelerate the calculations. A detailed study concludes to a super-linear convergence of GMRES and enables us to state accurate estimates on the convergence speed. Afterward, some implementation hints are discussed. Analytical and numerical examples are also provided and commented that demonstrate the reliability of the TOS-preconditioner.

We study the approximation properties of some finite element subspaces of H(div;Ω) and H(curl;Ω) defined on hexahedral meshes in three dimensions. This work extends results previously obtained for quadrilateral H(div;Ω) finite elements and for quadrilateral scalar finite element spaces. The finite element spaces we consider are constructed starting from a given finite dimensional space of vector fields on the reference cube, which is then transformed to a space of vector fields on a hexahedron using the appropriate transform (e.g., the Piola transform) associated to a trilinear isomorphism of the cube onto the hexahedron. After determining what vector fields are needed on the reference element to insure O(h) approximation in L2(Ω) and in H(div;Ω) and H(curl;Ω) on the physical element, we study the properties of the resulting finite element spaces.

The aim of this paper is to develop a crowd motion model designed to handle highly packed situations. The model we propose rests on two principles: we first define a spontaneous velocity which corresponds to the velocity each individual would like to have in the absence of other people. The actual velocity is then computed as the projection of the spontaneous velocity onto the set of admissible velocities (i.e. velocities which do not violate the non-overlapping constraint). We describe here the underlying mathematical framework, and we explain how recent results by J.F. Edmond and L. Thibault on the sweeping process by uniformly prox-regular sets can be adapted to handle this situation in terms of well-posedness. We propose a numerical scheme for this contact dynamics model, based on a prediction-correction algorithm. Numerical illustrations are finally presented and discussed.

The standard multilayer Saint-Venant system consists in introducing fluid layers that are advected by the interfacial velocities. As a consequence there is no mass exchanges between these layers and each layer is described by its height and its average velocity. Here we introduce another multilayer system with mass exchanges between the neighboring layers where the unknowns are a total height of water and an average velocity per layer. We derive it from Navier-Stokes system with an hydrostatic pressure and prove energy and hyperbolicity properties of the model. We also give a kinetic interpretation leading to effective numerical schemes with positivity and energy properties. Numerical tests show the versatility of the approach and its ability to compute recirculation cases with wind forcing.
