Utilizing magnetostrictive effect, the metallic glass is used to form mechanical resonators with different configurations. The resonance behaviors of these resonators are studied under different conditions, including different dc magnetic bias fields and different ac magnetic driving field. It is found that the resonators made of metallic glass exhibit a higher quality merit factor. Based on the results, it is also found that the acoustic wave velocity of the metallic glass decreases with increasing frequency. The application of these resonators as sensor platform is investigated. It is found that both odd and even vibration modes can be detected. Therefore, it provides a unique device that is capable to detect the target species on the sensor surface without “blind point(s)”, which is a challenge for all sensors based on other types of resonators. For the biosensors based on these resonators, a high sensitivity was observed. The advantages of these sensors over the current devices are demonstrated by the detection of Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium) in water.

Three families of NixZry (x = 28, 36, 38, x + y = 100%) metallic glasses were prepared and examined using X-ray, temperature dependent transport and magnetic field. X-ray characterization shows characteristic diffuse spectrum, except for narrow regions of control samples, where partial crystallization was induced in finite small volumes. Magnetic properties confirm spin-fluctuating paramagnetic-like behavior, which we asses from preliminary Hall coefficient measurements, which is quantitatively different in three sample families. Temperature dependent AC and DC transport measurements were conducted in a broad temperature range from 70 K to 700 K, finding both quantitative and semi-qualitative differences between samples with different Ni/Zr ratio.

We have succeeded in producing bulk metallic glass by partial substitution of Fe with Ni in Fe-B-Nb alloys which could otherwise be only melt spun into amorphous ribbons. Substitution by Ni in the Fe72-xB24Nb4Nix alloys with (x ~2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14) improves the glass forming ability of the materials and as a result rods of same compositions can be fabricated. Magnetically the BMG alloys remain soft with coercitivities below 500 mOe- However, the electrical resistivity of the system decreases significantly by as much as a factor of two with the increase of Ni concentration, and becomes more metallic like with a positive temperature coefficient.

The effects of annealing and fatigue on the local structure of Zr50Cu40Al10 and Zr60Cu30Al10 bulk metallic glasses (BMG) were investigated using the pair density function (PDF) analysis of synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction data. Our results indicate that the two compositions respond differently to annealing. The first PDF peak becomes sharper after annealing in Zr50Cu40Al10 with its intensity increasing, indicating that short-range ordering may be induced after the heat treatment. On the other hand, in Zr60Cu30Al10, the effects due to the heat treatment on the local structure are more subtle. Separately, the as-quenched and annealed alloys with the composition Zr50Cu40Al10 were subjected to fatigue loading conditions with ~ 106 compression cycles. The room temperature measurements showed changes in the local structure with fatigue especially for the annealed sample, involving the Cu-Zr correlations. Our results suggest that the physical properties of BMGs upon fatigue loading conditions may become accentuated due to the structural relaxation brought upon by annealing, leading to observable structural changes at the atomic level from fatigue.

With the aim of investigating fundamental properties and nano-imprintabilities of glassy alloy in the film form, Zr49Al11Ni8Cu32, Pd39Cu29Ni13P19 and Cu38Zr47Al9Ag6 alloy thin films were fabricated on Si substrate by a magnetron sputtering method. These thin films exhibit distinct glass-tradition phenomenon and large supercooled liquid region of about 80 K, confirming as a glassy structure and have very smooth surface and sufficient hardness to maintain imprinted shape, which are suitable for nano-imprint processing. Moreover, thermal nano-imprintabilies of these obtained films are demonstrated by using a dot array mold with a dot diameter of 90 nm and a pitch of 180 nm. Surface observations revealed that periodic nano-hole arrays were successfully imprinted on the surface of these films and precisely corresponded to the periodic dot pattern of the mold. Particularly, Pd-based glassy alloy thin film indicated more precise pattern imprintability, namely, more flat residual surface plane and sharper hole edge. These results suggest that these glassy alloy thin films, especially Pd-based glassy alloy thin film have high potential for application to the nano-imprinting materials.

A non-equilibrium Cu-Zr-Ag alloy was designed for the development of an alternative electric connector to Cu-Be alloys. This work aims at producing a Cu-Zr-Ag sheet using a hot-powder-rolling (HPR) process. The sheets were produced by a sequential process of HPR, pre-annealing, and cold rolling, using Cu93.5Zr5.5Ag1 (at.%) alloy powder produced by an argon gas atomization method. The Cu93.5Zr5.5Ag1 alloy sheet has a tensile strength of 1188 MPa and a conductivity of 33.2% IACS, which are similar values to those of Cu-Be alloys. In this paper, we optimize the conditions of the HPR process and reveal the correlation between the microstructure and properties of the Cu-Zr-Ag sheet produced by the HPR process. In addition, we discuss the alloy’s applicability for use as a connecter material.

Mechanical properties and thermal stability of bulk glassy alloys depend on their chemical composition ratios, although their detailed local structures especially around free volume have not been clarified yet. In order to know the origin of property dependence on alloy composition in Zr-Cu-Al ternary bulk glassy alloys in a view point of atomic scale, positron annihilation lifetime, coincidence Doppler broadening (CDB) and EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure) measurements have been employed for eutectic Zr50Cu40Al10 and hypoeutectic Zr60Cu30Al10 bulk glassy alloys before and after structural relaxation by annealing below glass transition temperature Tg.

The result of CDB experiment, which represents the electron momentum distribution around free volume, shows that significant atomic reordering around free volume does not take place by the annealing in each alloy. Besides, CDB ratio profiles for each alloy suggest that the fraction of Zr atom around free volume does not match the chemical composition of each alloy system. Change in positron lifetime, which is proportional to the size of free volume, during annealing for hypoeutectic alloy almost remains unchanged.

Internal friction (IF) of a metallic glass Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 has been measured near the glass transition temperature Tg (= 666 K). The measurement is performed by using DMA (TA Instrument) apparatus at a frequency of 0.01 Hz for a specimen stabilized by annealing. The specimen is kept at a constant temperature T, and the IF value Q-1 is measured as a function of time t. A fluctuation of Q-1 with time is seen, and the magnitude of the fluctuation, F(t), is derived from the Q-1-vs-t data. F(t) is Fourier transformed to the frequency spectrum F(f). Such experiment and analyses are carried out at various temperatures near Tg. A characteristic peak (f ~ 10-3 Hz) is found in the spectrum F(f) in the glass transition region.

An innovative “Rapid-Solidification Centrifugal Casting (RSCC) Process” was applied to manufacturing more high functional Fe-based magnetic alloys and some amorphous bulk metallic glassy alloys (BMGs) components. The molten alloys were poured into copper mold with rotation speed up to 6000rpm which can cause the maximum 4000 times as much centrifugal pressurization force as gravity. The bulk components of ring or very small three dimensional component samples of Fe and Zr alloy systems were successfully fabricated within only a few seconds at one process from melts with more cheap production cost. The molten raw BMG alloys (ZrAl system) and Fe-based soft-magnetic alloys(FeGaAl and FeSiB systems) by high frequency induction heating method were poured into copper mold. The fabricated BMG components of artificial tooth and ring of ZrAlNiCu alloy system are almost amorphous state by XRD profiles. Especially, the soft magnetic properties of two Fe-based alloys showed drastic change and were enhanced generally depending on the unique very fine, nano-scale columnar grains with strong texture toward radius direction for FeGaAl(Galfenol) alloy. The magnetization saturation Bs was enhanced up to1.97T in FeSiBPCu alloy. In consequence, according to synergistic effect of rapid solidification and high pressurization casting in this manufacturing process, RSCCP has the technical advantages of expansion of element composition, uniformity of the quality, reduction of internal defects and prevention of degradation at the time of secondary fabrication process of nano-crystalline-structured alloys and BMGs.

Present progress in developments of glassy alloy composites for bit-patterned-media and non-equilibrium Cu-based alloys for conductive materials of electrical connectors are reviewed. It is proven that the imprinting of the Pd-based glassy alloy thin film is favorable for the formation of nano-structured devices. Detailed imprinted morphologies formed by different imprinting conditions were examined. In addition, technology of large area imprinting up to 2.5 inches area has been successfully developed and it is now available for production. These technological developments will be utilized for next generation bit-patterned-media with high data density. A newly developed non-equilibrium Cu-Zr-Ag alloy was prepared into sheet form by the combination of casting, cold rolling and annealing. The alloy sheet exhibited high tensile strength of exceeding 1500 MPa and good electrical conductivity of 30% IACS. However, bending ductility should be improved for the actual production of connector. Through the several examinations, remaining issues that should be solved are discussed in the framework of industrialization and commercialization. These obtained results suggest that the glassy alloy composite or non-equilibrium alloy designed by the glass-forming rules have a great potential to develop innovative products in the near future.

The low loss coefficient and high elastic energy storage of amorphous metals may provide novel opportunities in the design of stringed musical instruments. To produce prototypes for metallic glass music wire, bulk metallic glass pre-forms were reheated into the supercooled liquid region and stretched into wires. Investigations of these wires’ geometrical, mechanical, and physical properties are reported. The process is relatively simple and could be practical for producing continuous wire. A theoretical analysis shows the importance of the interaction between heating power input, radiative and convective cooling, and area reduction in determining the wire’s final properties.

Measuring residual-stresses at the micron scale in glassy materials imposes experimental challenges, particularly when using diffraction, or other conventional laboratory methods, e.g., optical non-contact methods, grid methods, etc. In this short paper, a technique for mapping residual-stress profiles in amorphous materials with high spatial definition is used to measure residual-stresses in a laser-peened and fatigued bulk-metallic glass - Vit-105. The method involves local deposition of nano Pt dots patterns on the mapped region of the specimen and milling of a series of micro-slots of size 15 × 2 × 0.4 μm3 using the focused ion beam of a dual beam Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Microscope / Focused Ion Gun (FEGSEM/FIB) instrument. The deformation fields in the vicinity of slots are reconstructed by the digital image correlation analyses (DICA) of FEGSEM images recorded during milling. The residual-stresses are inferred by fitting a reference displacement field obtained from finite-element analyses (FEA) with the recorded displacement field. In this way, residual-stress distributions have been characterized as a function of the distance from the laser-peened surface to a depth of 1,200 microns with a spatial resolution of 30 μm. The influence of fatigue loading on the compressive residual-stresses spatial distribution is studied and discussed. It was found that the fatigue loading significantly changes the compressive residual-stress spatial distribution in the laser-peened layer.

Depth sensing nano-indentation investigations have been performed to determine the radial dependence of the hardness through the cross section of a Fe-based bulk glassy rod. We have found the hardness of the material decreases along radius from the centre to the outermost surface. This phenomenon is attributed to the ‘cooling rate induced surface softening’. Furthermore, a significant change (~15 %) in elastic modulus is noticed along the radius as well.

Effects of shot peening on fatigue properties of Zr-based amorphous matrix composite containing ductile crystalline particles were investigated, and fatigue processes were analyzed and compared with those of an as-cast composite. The microstructural analysis results of the shot-peened composite surface indicated that the deformation and surface flexion were observed as the shot-peening time or pressure increased. The compressive residual stress formed on the shot-peened surface was about the half of the ultimate tensile strength, and was not varied much with shot-peening time or pressure. The fatigue limit and fatigue ratio of the shot-peened composite were considerably higher than those of the as-cast composite. This was because the compressive residual stress formed by the shot peening induced the initiation of fatigue cracks at the specimen interior, instead of the specimen surface, thereby leading to the enhanced fatigue limit and fatigue life.

One potential application for Bulk Metallic Glasses (BMGs) is in dies with micro- and nano-sized features. Three basic characteristic sets inherent to BMGs make them ideal materials for micro/nano-tooling applications: (1) excellent compressive strength, wear and corrosion resistance; (2) amorphous structure which presents no microstructural length scale limitation to cutting and forming operations; (3) the presence of a glass transition temperature above which they can be easily formed. There are many potential applications for multi-scale BMG tooling, including in production of microfluidic and other precision biomedical devices. In the current work, discs were cut from 5 mm diameter cylindrical specimens of Zr44Cu40Al8Ag8 BMG produced via arc melting and casting into water-cooled copper molds. The cylindrical specimens were then thermoplastically formed into thin coin-like disc samples. The thin disc-shaped plates were then ground and polished to create a smooth flat surface. Sub-micron-sized features were patterned into the plates via a focused ion beam. We demonstrated that such feature sizes are not achievable in conventional crystalline metallic tool materials. The patterned BMG tools were then set in a compression press where the platen temperature was precisely controlled and a series of load-controlled embossing trials were carried out in which the features of the BMG tooling were replicated in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) sheet. An exercise in mapping out the size limitation of such a multi-scale embossing operation is reported.
