This book would not have been possible without the help and support of many people. It is an outcome of the project Engaged Humanities in Europe: Capacity building for participatory research in linguistic-cultural heritage, a Twinning programme coordinated by the Faculty of ‘Artes Liberales’ of the University of Warsaw and carried out jointly with the Department of Linguistics at SOAS, University of London and Leiden University’s Faculties of Linguistics and Archaeology. The project was funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement number 692199. This grant sponsored much of the preparation of the book, including editorial assistance, and also fully funded the free Gold Open Access online edition. We would also like to thank SOAS University of London’s Publication Fund for financing the preparation of the Index.

The Engaged Humanities project (ENGHUM) also enabled us to get to know many of the authors of this book, and to learn about many of the things that the book includes. We would like to thank all of the contributors to the book, and everyone who participated in the project workshops, field schools and visits, and all the community members who hosted our visits and research, without whom nothing would be possible and who have taught us so much.

Individuals have given their time and effort well beyond contractual obligations. They are too many to name all of them, but we would particularly like to thank (in alphabetical order) Willem Adelaar, Peter Austin, Bartłomiej Chromik, Ebany Dohle, Maarten Jansen, Stanisław Kordasiewicz, Tymoteusz Król, Genner Llanes Ortiz, Justyna Majerska-Sznajder, Zuzanna Rosłaniec and Anna Styczeń-Kawałek. We are particularly grateful to Ellen Foote for her excellent stylistic revision of the book, to Mary Chambers for preparing the Index, and to Joanna Maryniak for her technical support during our work on this complex publication.
