Field experiments were conducted in 2004 and 2005 to determine the tolerance of direct-seeded green onion to selected herbicides applied before or after green onion emergence. Preemergence herbicides included S-metolachlor, pendimethalin, dimethenamid, quinclorac, pronamide, ethofumesate, and DCPA, a registered standard. Herbicide applied to two- to three-leaf green onion included glyphosate, trifloxysulfuron, flumioxazin, phenmedipham, ethalfluralin, pendimethalin, S-metolachlor, and oxyfluorfen. Plots were cultivated and hand weeded to minimize negative effects of weed interference on the crop. All herbicides applied at seeding, excluding DCPA, caused excessive injury (>25%) to green onion in at least 1 of 2 years. Oxyfluorfen, ethalfluralin, or S-metolachlor applied after crop emergence caused less than 10% injury in both years to green onion. Green onion yields following treatment with oxyfluorfen, ethalfluralin, or S-metolachlor were equivalent to the nontreated control. All other herbicides applied after crop emergence resulted in height, density, or yield reductions relative to a nontreated control in at least 1 of 2 years.

Field studies were conducted during the 2003 through 2005 growing seasons to evaluate postemergence herbicides and timing of application for horse purslane, smellmelon, and Palmer amaranth control in peanut. Acifluorfen provided inconsistent control of the three weed species. Bentazon failed to control Palmer amaranth, horse purslane, and smellmelon (< 65%), whereas 2,4-DB controlled horse purslane and smellmelon less than 70%. Diclosulam applied early postemergence (EPOST) controlled Palmer amaranth at least 77% but horse purslane control varied from 27 to 73% when applied EPOST and was less than 50% with the late postemergence (LPOST) application. Diclosulam controlled smellmelon less than 65%. Imazethapyr and imazapic controlled Palmer amaranth and smellmelon at least 70% but controlled horse purslane less than 65%. Lactofen controlled Palmer amaranth and horse purslane at least 93% with the EPOST application but had inconsistent control (40 to 100%) when applied LPOST. Smellmelon control with lactofen was also inconsistent. Removal of weed interference with all herbicides except bentazon provided peanut yields greater than the nontreated check.

A study was conducted in 2005 and 2006 to evaluate the response of 10 rice cultivars to penoxsulam applied at 70 g ai/ha to two- to three-leaf rice. A related study was conducted in 2004 and 2005 to compare the rice response to applications of penoxsulam at 35 and 70 g/ha and bispyribac-sodium at 28 g ai/ha. In the first study, all 10 rice cultivars exhibited tolerance to penoxsulam as evidenced by plant height, number of days to 50% heading, and rice grain yield. In the second study, applications of both rates of penoxsulam and bispyribac-sodium reduced mass of rice roots 65 to 71% 2 wk after treatment compared with a nontreated control. However, rice grain yield was higher following application of penoxsulam at 70 g/ha compared with yield of the nontreated control or yield following penoxsulam at 35 g/ha and bispyribac-sodium. Rice recovered from injury observed following herbicide application with no negative impact on grain yield. Results indicate that, even though rice root injury can be severe following application, penoxsulam is safe for application to rice cultivars currently grown in the southern U.S. Rice Belt.

Annual bluegrass is one of the most difficult-to-control weeds in creeping bentgrass putting greens. Field trials were conducted in 2003 and 2005 to evaluate bispyribac-sodium for annual bluegrass management in creeping bentgrass greens maintained at a 3 mm mowing height. Bispyribac-sodium applied weekly at 12 or 24 g ai/ha controlled annual bluegrass 86% 12 wk after initial treatment (WAIT). In 2003, bispyribac-sodium applied at 12 and 24 g/ha/wk injured creeping bentgrass approximately 15 and 50% by 4 WAIT, respectively. However, injury was transient and was not evident by 12 WAIT. In 2005, the 12 and 24 g/ha/wk injured creeping bentgrass 15 and 85% by 8 WAIT, respectively, and was still evident throughout the trial. Putting green quality was reduced when compared to nontreated creeping bentgrass by the same treatments. The removal of annual bluegrass caused soil exposure until creeping bentgrass grew over the bare areas, contributing to decreased quality evaluations. Management of annual bluegrass in creeping bentgrass putting greens is possible with bispyribac-sodium. However, these results indicate bispyribac-sodium can cause excessive injury when applied to creeping bentgrass mowed at 3 mm.

Bird vetch is a perennial Eurasian plant which, unlike many exotic weed species, can invade low fertility areas that have not been disturbed. It also is common in pastures, woodland, and tall forb communities. Bird vetch is expanding along Alaskan roadsides, in urbanized areas, and in low density forests. A greenhouse study was conducted to determine efficacy of six herbicide treatments applied at reduced rates in 2005 and again in 2006 for bird vetch seedling control. Bird vetch seedlings were tolerant of reduced rates of chlorsulfuron and 2,4-DB; however, complete control was achieved with rates of clopyralid, dicamba plus diflufenzopyr, triclopyr, and 2,4-D that were a fourth to an eighth of the full registered rate. These results will be important for developing effective, low-cost methods for controlling bird vetch in Alaska, especially on the outer margins of infestations.

Field studies were conducted during the 2002 thru 2004 growing seasons at two locations in the south-central Texas cotton-production region to evaluate trifloxysulfuron and trifloxysulfuron plus prometryn in combination with either S-metolachlor or glyphosate or both for weed control and cotton response. Cotton leaf burn (13 to 19%) was noted in 2002 at one location with trifloxysulfuron plus prometryn applied late POST-directed (LPDIR). Herbicide combinations that included trifloxysulfuron controlled barnyardgrass, hemp sesbania, yellow nutsedge, Palmer amaranth, smooth pigweed, ivyleaf morningglory, pitted morningglory, and smellmelon at least 80% in most instances. Glyphosate applied early POST over-the-top (EPOTT) and mid-POST over-the-top (MPOTT) at 0.84 kg ai/ha followed by trifloxysulfuron plus prometryn at 1.1 kg ai/ha applied LPDIR controlled the above-mentioned weeds plus Texas panicum at least 94%. No other herbicide systems provided effective control (greater than 79%) of Texas panicum. Higher cotton yields in 2002 were obtained with herbicide systems that included glyphosate alone or glyphosate plus S-metolachlor applied EPOTT or LPOTT followed by trifloxysulfuron plus prometryn applied LPDIR, whereas in 2003, none of the herbicide systems increased yield over the nontreated check.

Field experiments were conducted in 1999, 2000, and 2001 to investigate PRE and POST applications of halosulfuron-methyl in combination with clomazone plus ethalfluralin for control of several broadleaf weeds in cucumber and pumpkin. Halosulfuron was applied PRE or POST to cucumber and pumpkin at 9, 18, and 27 g ai/ha in combination with a PRE application of clomazone at 175 g ai/ha plus ethalfluralin at 630 g ai/ha. Halosulfuron applied POST at 27 g/ha in combination with clomazone plus ethalfluralin controlled weed species greater than 62%. Smooth pigweed control by addition of halosulfuron at 27 g/ha PRE or POST was greater than 88%, and common ragweed control was greater than 78% PRE and 88% POST, but control of ivyleaf morningglory and tall morningglory was 43 to 67% PRE and 62 to 76% POST. Cucumber injury with addition of halosulfuron did not exceed 13% PRE or POST, but pumpkin was injured as much as 43% with addition of halosulfuron PRE and 27% by POST applications. In a separate study without clomazone plus ethalfluralin PRE, smooth pigweed up to 13 cm tall was controlled 83% by halosulfuron at 27 g/ha in 2000, but rapidly growing smooth pigweed 15 to 40 cm tall was controlled only 58% in 2001. Cucumber and pumpkin yields were not affected by halosulfuron rate but were higher than yields produced by cucumber and pumpkin treated with only the mixture of clomazone plus ethalfluralin. In these studies, cucumber and pumpkin were tolerant to halosulfuron at 9 to 27 g/ha PRE or POST, making this herbicide acceptable for use in combination with clomazone and ethalfluralin for controlling several common weed species.

Reducing seeding rates in 19- or 76-cm row soybean below the optimum rate may reduce soybean competitiveness with weeds, and indirectly increase production costs to the grower. Field studies in 2001 and 2002 evaluated the effect of soybean seeding rate and row spacing on the emergence, growth, and competitiveness of eastern black nightshade (EBN) in soybean. EBN emergence ceased within 45 d after planting (DAP), and was similar across soybean seeding rates and row spacing. EBN control by glyphosate was not affected by soybean population or row spacing. Soybean planted in 19-cm rows was more competitive with EBN, regardless of seeding rate. Increasing the soybean seeding rate in 76-cm rows from 185,000 seeds/ha to 432,000 seeds/ha reduced EBN dry weight threefold at East Lansing and nearly twofold at Clarksville in 2002. There was no increase in EBN density or dry weight in 19-cm row soybean planted at 308,000 seeds/ha compared with 556,000 seeds/ha, whereas a seeding rate of 432,000 seeds/ha in 76-cm row soybean did not suppress EBN dry weight or increase soybean yield in the presence of EBN compared with a seeding rate of 308,000 seeds/ha.

Bioassay experiments were conducted to determine the phytotoxicity of methanol and ethyl acetate extracts of hairy vetch and cowpea residues on the germination and radicle elongation of three vegetable crops and three weed species. The species tested included common chickweed, redroot pigweed, wild carrot, tomato, corn, and cucumber. The extracts of both species were dissolved in methanol to yield seven concentrations ranging from 0 to 8 g/L. Germination was significantly reduced by methanol and ethyl acetate extracts of hairy vetch extracts except for corn and tomato. Common chickweed and wild carrot were the only species that showed consistent reduction in germination with the methanol and ethyl acetate cowpea extracts. The radicle growth of most species, with the exception of corn and cucumber, was reduced by the extracts of both cover crops. Corn and cucumber radicle elongation was stimulated at low concentrations of the extracts; however, these observations were not significantly different among treatments. This study demonstrated that methanol and ethyl acetate extracts of hairy vetch and cowpea contained allelopathic compounds and that their phytotoxicity is likely species specific. Future studies should focus on the identification and isolation of the allelochemical(s) found in the methanol and ethyl acetate extracts of the hairy vetch and cowpea residues.

Field studies were conducted near Clayton, Goldsboro, Kinston, and Rocky Mount, NC in 2003 to evaluate weed control and cotton response to postemergence (POST) treatments of glufosinate applied alone or in tank mixtures with s-metolachlor, pyrithiobac, or trifloxysulfuron. Late-season control of common lambsquarters, common ragweed, entireleaf morningglory, ivyleaf morningglory, jimsonweed, pitted morningglory, purple nutsedge, and sicklepod with glufosinate early postemergence (EPOST) was ≥90%. The addition of S-metolachlor to glufosinate EPOST improved control of all weeds except sicklepod, ivyleaf morningglory, and entireleaf morningglory. When applied POST, glufosinate provided ≥90% late season control of common lambsquarters, common ragweed, entireleaf morningglory, ivyleaf morningglory, jimsonweed, large crabgrass, pitted morningglory, purple nutsedge, and sicklepod. Control of goosegrass and Palmer amaranth was 81 and 84%, respectively. When pyrithiobac or trifloxysulfuron were added in POST tank mixtures, control of Palmer amaranth improved 6 and 9 percentage points, respectively. Control of goosegrass remained near 80% regardless of herbicide treatment used. The addition of a late post-directed (LAYBY) tank-mixture of glufosinate plus prometryn provided ≥88% late season control of all weeds. Reduced control of goosegrass and Palmer amaranth was observed with the LAYBY tank mixture of glufosinate plus MSMA when compared to other LAYBY tank mixtures. Cotton lint yields in plots receiving any herbicide application were significantly higher than plots receiving no herbicide application for all application timings. Cotton lint yields were ≥ 740 kg/ha where an EPOST was applied and ≥ 680 kg/ha when a POST herbicide was applied. Cotton lint yields were at least 200 kg/ha greater on plots receiving a LAYBY application when compared to plots where no LAYBY treatment was applied.

Producers in the semiarid Great Plains are exploring alternative crop rotations, with the goal of replacing winter wheat–fallow. In 1993, a study was established to compare performance of eight rotations comprised of various combinations with winter wheat (W), spring wheat (SW), dry pea (Pea), safflower (Saf), corn (C), sunflower (Sun), proso millet (M), or fallow (F). After 8 years, we characterized weed communities by recording seedling emergence in each rotation. Seventeen species were observed, with downy brome, kochia, horseweed, and stinkgrass comprising 87% of the community. Rotations with the least number of weed seedlings were W–F and SW–W–C–Sun; in comparison, weed density was six-fold higher in W–M. Density of downy brome and kochia was highest in W–M compared with other rotations, whereas stinkgrass and green foxtail were prominent in proso millet of the W–M and W–C–M rotations. Horseweed established readily in safflower and dry pea. In the semiarid Great Plains, designing rotations in a cycle of four that includes cool- and warm-season crops can be a key component of integrated weed management.

Six weed control programs with and without irrigation were investigated in a newly established pecan orchard. Irrigation increased crown diameter growth in only one of seven growing seasons but increased nut yield an average of 35% in the first two bearing years. Weed control program significantly influenced crown diameter beginning in the fourth growing season and continued through season six while also impacting final crown diameter. The use of postemergence (POST) herbicides increased crown diameter a minimum 4 mm vs. preemergence (PRE) herbicides. Mowing neither increased nor decreased crown diameter when used with herbicides; however, when used solely, crown diameter was 29% less. Highest growth rates were obtained with a combination PRE plus POST weed management system. Nut yields were closely linked to growth data. No differences in nut yield were observed between PRE- or POST-herbicide programs alone or in combination with mowing. Mowing alone decreased nut yield 57% vs. herbicide-based approaches. A combination PRE- plus POST-weed control program increased yield 38% vs. all other treatments.

Cogongrass and guineagrass are serious perennial weeds in small-scale farms in lowland subhumid zones of West Africa. Field studies were conducted in 2002 and 2003 at two sites in Ibadan, Nigeria [Ijaye and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)], to evaluate the effect of rimsulfuron on weed communities dominated by cogongrass and guineagrass in corn. At both sites, treatments were rimsulfuron dosages of 0 (nontreated control), 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 g ai/ha. Rimsulfuron did not cause any visible phytotoxicity on the corn at any dosage at either site. There was a rapid increase in weed control as the dosage of rimsulfuron increased from 0 to 20 g/ha. Weed control was not improved at rates higher than 20 g/ha. Rimsulfuron was very effective against sedges, Ipomoea involucrata, Bengal dayflower, gulf leafflower, old-world diamond-flower, and wild jute providing more than 80% control at dosages between 10 and 20 g/ha at Ijaye. Rimsulfuron was less effective for cogongrass, with a maximum of only 38% control observed. At IITA, the herbicide was very effective against guineagrass, Bengal dayflower, nodeweed, coat buttons, redfruit passionflower, and waterleaf; all of which were controlled more than 70% with any rate of rimsulfuron. Regression analysis showed that the dosage of rimsulfuron required to reduce shoot dry biomass by 70% was 5 g/ha for guineagrass and 35 g/ha for cogongrass at 3 wk after treatment (WAT). At crop maturity, the dosage of rimsulfuron required to reduce shoot dry biomass by 70% was 43 g/ha for guineagrass and 200 g/ha for cogongrass. The dry biomass of cogongrass and guineagrass was higher at crop harvest than at 2 WAT regardless of herbicide dosage. Corn grain yield was 1.8 times higher at IITA than at Ijaye. At both sites, corn grain yield increased with increased herbicide dosage. Maximum corn grain yields were obtained at a rimsulfuron dosage of 20 g/ha.

A callus induction and plantlet regeneration system for croftonweed was developed by studying the influence of explant type (leaf, stem, and nodal segment) and different concentrations of plant growth regulators. The leaf was a better explant for callogenesis compared to the stem. The highest callus induction frequency (87.2%) was obtained from leaf segments on Murashige and Skoog's medium (MS medium) supplemented with 0.5 mg/L (2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid and 2.0 mg/L 6-benzylaminopurine (BA), and 71.6% differentiation along with a multiplication rate of 4.1 adventitious shoots per callus was achieved with a combination of 0.5 mg/L 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 1.0 mg/L BA. In addition, MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/L NAA and 1.0 mg/L BA was the best medium for axillary shoot regeneration from nodal segments. Rhizogenesis of cultured shoots was satisfactorily obtained in half-strength MS without any growth regulators. The regenerated rooted plantlets were successfully acclimatized in soil where they grew normally without showing any morphological variation. These studies provide the prerequisite system for the development of genetic engineering in the future and propagating croftonweed rapidly for further study.

Annual bluegrass is a troublesome weed of Kentucky bluegrass because of a lack of selective POST herbicides for control. Field experiments were conducted in New Jersey to investigate the potential of bispyribac-sodium, primisulfuron, and sulfosulfuron for selective annual bluegrass control in Kentucky bluegrass. Primisulfuron provided the best combination of Kentucky bluegrass safety and annual bluegrass control with greater efficacy in summer than fall. Bispyribac-sodium also provided substantial annual bluegrass control, especially in the summer, but caused unacceptable (> 20%) Kentucky bluegrass injury, whereas annual bluegrass control with sulfosulfuron was inconsistent. Growth chamber experiments confirmed that greater primisulfuron efficacy in summer than fall may be attributed to higher temperatures. Overall, primisulfuron has promising implications for future use in Kentucky bluegrass for annual bluegrass control whereas bispyribac-sodium will likely be more applicable in other cool-season turfgrasses.

Volunteer potato is highly competitive with onion and few control tactics are effective for removing this weed from an onion crop. Both volunteer potato density and duration of interference reduce onion yield, but the interaction of these factors is unknown. Field trials were conducted in 2003 in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington to determine the influence of volunteer potato density on the critical time of weed removal (CTWR) in onion. Yield losses of 2.5, 5.0, and 10% were estimated to occur at 534, 654, and 830 growing degree days (GDD) after onion emergence, respectively, with a volunteer potato density of 0.5 plants/m2. At 2.0 volunteer potato plants/m2, yield losses of 2.5, 5.0, and 10% were estimated to occur at 388, 481, and 598 GDD after onion emergence, respectively. Volunteer potato at 2.0 plants/m2 had to be removed at least one onion leaf stage sooner, compared to a weed density of 0.5 plants/m2, to avoid yield loss. Yield loss due to volunteer potato density or duration of interference was greatest among jumbo, colossal, and supercolossal market grades (P ≤ 0.1). Lowering potato tuber density in crops preceding onion will extend the critical time for weed removal and reduce the risk of crop loss.

Foramsulfuron has recently been registered for weed control in corn in Ontario, but there is very little information on the rate of foramsulfuron required to obtain at least 90% weed control. Our objective was to determine the foramsulfuron rates giving at least 90% weed control while maintaining crop yield loss due to weed interference and injury at less than 5%. Ten field trials were conducted at five Ontario locations (Exeter, Harrow, Ridgetown, Woodslee, and Woodstock) in 2001 and 2002 to evaluate the effectiveness of foramsulfuron at rates ranging from 8.75 to 140 g ai/ha. To obtain a reduction in biomass of 90% (I90) at 78 d after treatment (DAT), foramsulfuron must be applied to common lambsquarters at 68 g/ha and to common ragweed at 86 g/ha, respectively. For green foxtail a foramsulfuron rate of 25 g/ha was required to achieve 90% control. The application of foramsulfuron caused injury to corn at 7 DAT at Ridgetown and Woodstock only, but did not exceed a rating of 10%; by 14 and 28 DAT no corn injury was recorded at any location. Corn yield of at least 95% of a weed-free check was obtained at Woodstock when foramsulfuron was applied at 70 g/ha. At Exeter and Woodslee yield was 90% of the weed-free check at a foramsulfuron rate of 35 g/ha. Finally, at Harrow and Ridgetown, corn yield was lowered at all foramsulfuron rates because of broadleaved weed interference. Tank-mixing foramsulfuron with dicamba plus prosulfuron improved common lambsquarters and common ragweed control and final corn yield was improved by more than 20% when compared with an application of foramsulfuron alone. Thus, these results show that weed control with foramsulfuron is species specific and that tank mixtures with a broadleaf herbicide may be required for broad-spectrum weed control and to protect the full yield potential of corn.

In 2004 and 2005, glyphosate + diuron and flumioxazin + MSMA were applied POST-directed to cotton at 20, 30, 40, and 50 cm in height. Herbicides were directed to either the lower 2 cm of the cotton stem or to the lower 50% of the cotton stem to determine the impact of application timing and placement on cotton response. Glyphosate + diuron resulted ≤ 22% injury when applied high on the stem and ≤ 8% injury when applied low on the stem. Regardless of application placement or timing, no yield reductions were observed as a result of glyphosate + diuron application. Conversely, flumioxazin + MSMA applications resulted in 93 and 64% injury when applied high POST-directed (HPD) to 20- and 30-cm cotton, respectively. Low POST-directed (LPD) applications caused 33 and 23% injury to 20- and 30-cm cotton, respectively. In both years, HPD applications of flumioxazin + MSMA on 20-cm cotton resulted in excessive yield loss (94 to 87%), whereas yield loss was only noted in 30-cm cotton in 2004. No yield loss was observed in 40- or 50-cm cotton. Additionally, LPD applications of flumioxazin + MSMA, though causing significant visual injury, did not result in a yield reduction at any application timing. Although cotton became more tolerant to flumioxazin + MSMA as the season progressed, the research suggests that applications of flumioxazin should be made with precision or delayed until cotton reaches 40 cm in height.

Cogongrass, a rhizomatous perennial, is among the world's most troublesome weeds. Research was conducted at the Southern Weed Science Research Unit, Stoneville, MS, to determine cogongrass rhizome mortality with increasing temperature and duration of exposure to heat and to determine if 2,3,5 triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) could be used to evaluate cogongrass rhizome mortality following heat treatment. Cogongrass rhizome mortality was 100% at 65, 79, 93, 107, 121, 149, 177, and 187 C at time periods greater than or equal to 25, 5, 2.5, 2.5, 2.5, 2, 2 and 1 min, respectively. The duration of heat required for cogongrass mortality decreases as temperature increased. The standard greenhouse bioassay was more effective than tetrazolium chloride in predicting viability of cogongrass rhizomes following heat treatments.

Field and greenhouse experiments were conducted during 2005 and 2006 at Stoneville, MS, to determine control of ragweed parthenium with several preemergence (PRE) and postemergence (POST) herbicides registered for use in corn, cotton, peanut, rice, and soybean. Norflurazon, pendimethalin, clomazone, diuron, fluometuron, pyrithiobac, dimethenamid, flumetsulam, imazaquin, s-metolachlor, metribuzin, chlorimuron, atrazine, simazine, flumioxazin, and quinclorac were applied PRE. Ragweed parthenium control was highest with norflurazon (100%) and clomazone (100%) followed by fluometuron (96%), metribuzin (90%), diuron (87%), flumioxazin (84%), chlorimuron (77%), and quinclorac (67%) at 6 wk after treatment (WAT) under greenhouse conditions. Control of ragweed parthenium was less than 58% with all other herbicides. Ragweed parthenium appears to be highly sensitive to pigment and photosynthetic inhibitors compared to herbicides with other modes of action. Glyphosate, glufosinate, paraquat, bentazon, acifluorfen, chlorimuron, halosulfuron, MSMA, bromoxynil, atrazine, 2,4-D, flumioxazin, trifloxysulfuron, and clomazone were applied POST to field-grown rosette and bolted plants. Glyphosate, glufosinate, chlorimuron, and trifloxysulfuron applied at rosette stage provided greater than 93% control of ragweed parthenium at 3 WAT. Halosulfuron, MSMA, bromoxynil, 2,4-D, and flumioxazin controlled 58 to 90% rosette ragweed parthenium at 3 WAT. Ragweed parthenium control with all other POST herbicides was less than 38%. At bolted stage, glyphosate, glufosinate, and trifloxysulfuron controlled 86 to 95% ragweed parthenium and control was 61 to 70% with chlorimuron, halosulfuron, and 2,4-D 3 WAT. Overall, efficacy of POST herbicides was better on rosette plants than on bolted plants. Amino acid synthesis and glutamine synthase inhibitors were more active than herbicides with other modes of action. These results indicate that norflurazon, clomazone, fluometuron, flumioxazin, halosulfuron, chlorimuron, and trifloxysulfuron could provide effective control of ragweed parthenium.
