Field studies were conducted over 2 yr to evaluate rhizome johnsongrass control with tank mixtures and sequential applications of bromoxynil at 1.7 kg ai/ha and the graminicides clethodim, fluazifop-P, and quizalofop-P. When compared with the graminicide alone, bromoxynil reduced johnsongrass control 28 days after treatment (DAT) 20, 36, and 55% when applied in combination with clethodim, fluazifop-P, and quizalofop-P, respectively. Application of bromoxynil 7, 3, and 1 d before or 1, 3, and 7 d after all graminicides reduced antagonism when compared with the bromoxynil plus graminicide mixtures. Based on johnsongrass control 28 DAT, antagonism was precluded when bromoxynil was applied 3 d before clethodim and 7 d before fluazifop-P and quizalofop-P. Application of bromoxynil 3 and 7 d after quizalofop-P and 7 d after clethodim also precluded antagonism. The antagonistic tank mixtures of bromoxynil and graminicides reduced cotton yield 17% because of reduced johnsongrass control compared with graminicides alone. A 3-d or greater application interval between bromoxynil and the graminicides was necessary to maximize cotton yield.

Premergence (PRE) herbicides were applied to a bermudagrass golf green overseeded with ‘Laser’ roughstalk bluegrass during 1995 and 1996 to determine their effects on roughstalk bluegrass injury and on the transition from a mixed cool- and warm-season grass back to the permanent bermudagrass. Roughstalk bluegrass tolerated single March applications of trifluralin plus benefin at 2.2 kg/ha, pendimethalin at 3.4 kg/ha, dithiopyr at 0.6 kg/ha, prodiamine at 0.8 kg/ha, bensulide plus oxadiazon at 8.4 kg/ha, and bensulide at 11.2 kg/ha. A single March application of oxadiazon plus benefin at 3.4 kg/ha severely injured (35%) the overseeded turf in 1 yr, but not when 1.7 kg/ha was applied in March and repeated in May. One-half recommended rates of oxadiazon and bensulide plus oxadiazon applied in March did not cause any undesirable injury, but when repeated in May, moderate to severe injury (28 to 33%) occurred in June. Oryzalin at ≥ 1.1 kg/ha, benefin plus oryzalin at ≥ 1.1 kg/ha, and oxyfluorfen plus oryzalin at ≥ 1.7 kg/ha severely injured (≥ 35%) roughstalk bluegrass. The rate of transition of mixed roughstalk bluegrass and bermudagrass back to permanent bermudagrass was not affected by any of the PRE herbicides except when oryzalin was applied alone or in combination with benefin or oxyfluorfen.

Field experiments were conducted to determine suitable application timings and rates of MON 37500 for downy brome control in winter wheat. MON 37500 applied preemergence (PRE) or in fall postemergence (POST) provided better control of downy brome than when applied spring POST. MON 37500 at rates ranging from 19 to 33 g ai/ha applied PRE or fall POST controlled downy brome >85%. MON 37500 applied spring POST at 60 g/ha only suppressed growth of downy brome. Winter wheat was not visibly injured and maturity was not delayed by MON 37500 applied up to 60 g/ha at any of the application timings. Winter wheat yield responded positively to all MON 37500 treatments but PRE or fall POST applications usually resulted in greater yields than spring POST applications. Wheat yields progressively increased with increasing rates of MON 37500 up to 30–40 g/ha, above which yields tended to plateau or, in two instances, decline slightly. MON 37500 is an important new herbicide that should enable growers to better manage downy brome in winter wheat production systems.

Duration and spectrum of preemergence (PRE) weed control following isoxaben application at 0.56, 0.84, and 1.12 kg ai/ha in spring, fall, or spring plus fall (double) application were evaluated by field experiments. Residual activity of isoxaben was assessed by monitoring weed counts at two locations for 12 mo after treatment (MAT). Buckhorn plantain and dandelion control from spring-applied isoxaben at 1.12 kg/ha was > 90% at 4 MAT in Blacksburg but dropped to < 51% at 12 MAT. Isoxaben at 1.12 kg/ha applied in fall provided ≥ 90% control of buckhorn plantain for 8–9 MAT, with control ranging from 69 to 91% at approximately 12 MAT. Dandelion control with fall-applied isoxaben at 1.12 kg/ha ranged from 60 to 75%, 8–9 MAT. Fall application of 1.12 kg/ ha isoxaben at Virginia Beach controlled henbit and cornspeedwell for 2–3 MAT. Multiple applications of isoxaben improved weed control at Virginia Beach, but results were inconclusive at Blacksburg. In comparison, oxadiazon controlled white sweet clover and dandelion for 1 MAT following spring application in Blacksburg, but < 65% broadleaf control was observed at 4 MAT. Broadleaf weed control following single application of oxadiazon at 3.36 kg/ha was < 60% at 9 MAT Poor weed control resulted from spring applications of isoxaben and oxadiazon when a 25-cm precipitation occurred within 2 wk after application in one study.

Common St. Johnswort is widespread in eastern Canada but it seldom constitutes a serious weed problem. A demographic study conducted in 1993 and 1994 at four typical undisturbed sites indicated that 36 to 96% of established St. Johnswort shoots died during the growing season. Mortality was always associated with infection by a host-specific Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. The leaf-feeding beetle Chrysolina hyperici occurred at all sites and caused maximum midsummer defoliation of 27% in 1993 and 51% in 1994. Healthy plants readily recovered from defoliation during pupation of the fourth instar of the insect in June and following adult estivation in August. Although widespread, C. hyperici populations appear transient and alone do not cause sustained feeding pressure resulting in weed control. When Chrysolina larvae and adults were collected at six field sites and placed on healthy seedlings under controlled conditions, up to 36% of the plants became infected with C. gloeosporioides. Scanning electron micrographs commonly showed Colletotrichum conidia among the setae on legs, tarsal pads, and antennae of adults and larvae. In a series of three experiments conducted under controlled conditions in which Chrysolina larvae and adults were placed on healthy plants after feeding on diseased ones, the incidence of infection ranged from 63 to 100%. Hence, under favorable conditions Chrysolina adults may selectively transmit the pathogen in the field. This study demonstrated the potential of enhancing biological control of weeds by insects with the integration of an effective, host-specific pathogen.

Following six consecutive annual applications of imazaquin in combination with trifluralin or pendimethalin to several soybean fields on the Delmarva Peninsula, unacceptable smooth pigweed control was observed. Field and greenhouse studies were conducted to determine if this population of smooth pigweed was resistant to imazaquin and other herbicides. In field research, imazaquin and imazethapyr gave complete control of the susceptible (S) population while providing no control of the resistant (R) population; pyrithiobac controlled 99 and 90% of the R and S populations, respectively. Pendimethalin, metribuzin, MON-12000, and flumiclorac gave less than 75% control of both S and R populations. Chlorimuron, primisulfuron, CGA-152005, and lactofen gave above 75% control, and thifensulfuron and nicosulfuron gave above 90% control of both S and R populations. Seeds were collected from the R and S smooth pigweed populations for research in the greenhouse. Greenhouse studies confirmed high levels of resistance to imazaquin and imazethapyr and low levels of cross-resistance to rimsulfuron and chlorimuron in the R population. Susceptibility of the R population to nicosulfuron, thifensulfuron, pyrithiobac, and pendimethalin was comparable to that of the S population.

Reciprocal controlled crosses were made in the greenhouse between Gulfmont rice transformed with the bialaphos resistance (BAR) gene and red rice and BAR-transformed Koshihikari rice and red rice to assess the inheritance of glufosinate resistance. All F1 plants were resistant to 2.2 kg ai/ha glufosinate. Ammonia accumulation as a measure of glufosinate resistance in the F1 hybrids was assayed at 4 and 8 days after treatment (DAT). Ammonia accumulation in hybrids 4 DAT was similar to glufosinate treated, transformed rice, while treated nontransformed plants accumulated 14 to 23 times more ammonia compared with the hybrids. The nature of inheritance of glufosinate resistance in F2 rice plants was studied by a glufosinate dip test, a spray test, and ammonia assay. All three tests confirmed that glufosinate resistance, as influenced by the BAR gene, segregated in a 3 (resistant): 1 (susceptible) ratio.

Three methods of predicting the impact of weed interference on crop yield and expected economic return were compared to evaluate the economic importance of weed spatial heterogeneity. Density of three weed species was obtained using a grid sampling scheme in 11 corn and 11 soybean fields. Crop yield loss was predicted assuming densities were homogeneous, aggregated following a negative binomial with known population mean and k, or aggregated with weed densities spatially mapped. Predicted crop loss was lowest and expected returns highest when spatial location of weed density was utilized to decide whether control was justified. Location-specific weed management resulted in economic gain as well as a reduction in the quantity of herbicide applied.

The tolerance of 10 broccoli cultivars to preemergence (PRE) applications of oxyfluorfen was evaluated in greenhouse and field experiments. Differences in tolerance among cultivars were expressed as differences in seedling injury ratings and growth and stand reduction. The cultivars ‘Pinnacle’ and ‘Mercedes’ were most tolerant, ‘Embassy’ and ‘Early Dawn’ were least tolerant, and other cultivars were intermediate in tolerance. Broccoli seedling weights and stand counts averaged across 10 cultivars and oxyfluorfen application rates of 0.125, 0.25, and 0.5 kg/ha were 70 and 81% of control, respectively, for the two fall-planted experiments and 39 and 50% of control, respectively, for the spring-planted experiment. Differences in tolerance among cultivars were less distinct in the cooler spring than in the warmer fall season. Oxyfluorfen application that caused stand and early growth reduction did not always affect broccoli head weight or quality or delay harvest.

An experimental turfgrass growth regulator, V-10029, was compared with trinexapac-ethyl, a growth regulator used commonly on highly maintained turfgrasses, to evaluate growth suppression patterns and suppression of seedhead formation; the latter was evaluated on turfgrass species and annual bluegrass, a weedy species that appeared and developed seedheads in tall fescue. Plugs of creeping red fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and creeping bentgrass were taken from the field into a greenhouse. V-10029 at three rates (0.015, 0.029, and 0.059 kg/ha) was compared to an untreated control and trinexapac-ethyl at a label rate (0.382 kg/ha for perennial ryegrass and 0.287 kg/ha for the other four species). Of the eight replications for each treatment, four were not mowed for the purpose of evaluating suppression of seedhead formation, and four were used for weekly clipping collection to evaluate growth suppression. Compared to the untreated control, V-10029 at all three applied rates caused significant seedhead suppression in both tall fescue infested with annual bluegrass (> 90%) and perennial ryegrass (50 to 80%). Trinexapac-ethyl was not as effective, causing seedhead suppression levels of 57% in annual bluegrass found in tall fescue and 43% in perennial ryegrass. V-10029 caused unacceptable levels of discoloration (> 20%) in all turfgrass species, and discoloration increased with increasing rates of application. Patterns of growth suppression for tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, and perennial ryegrass, in response to V-10029 at all rates and to trinexapac-ethyl, were similar on a percent of suppression basis. Growth of creeping bentgrass was suppressed by V-10029 only at high rates. In contrast, creeping red fescue was significantly injured by V-10029 at all rates. The greatest growth suppression, in response for all treatments, occurred 2 to 3 wk after application. The effect of trinexapac-ethyl dissipated after 4 wk, while V-10029 was effective until 5 to 7 wk after treatment. Observed effects of V-10029 were consistent with its activity as an ALS-inhibiting herbicide and, therefore, as a Class D turfgrass growth regulator.

Urea and ammonium nitrate are components of 28% nitrogen liquid fertilizer (UAN) that is often used as an adjuvant in addition to surfactants or oils with herbicides. Ammonium nitrate and/or UAN fertilizer enhancement of nicosulfuron phytotoxicity to large crabgrass or yellow foxtail depended upon the associated oil or surfactant adjuvant. Ammonium nitrate reduced the effectiveness of most block copolymers but not other surfactants with nicosulfuron for large crabgrass. Urea never enhanced and often reduced surfactant and oil adjuvant enhancement of nicosulfuron. Ammonium nitrate or UAN, but not urea, enhanced nicosulfuron phytotoxicity to yellow foxtail when the spray carrier contained sodium bicarbonate. These research results indicated that enhancement of nicosulfuron efficacy from UAN is mainly from the ammonium nitrate component. However, the benefit to nicosulfuron from UAN or ammonium nitrate depended upon the associated surfactant or oil adjuvants.

Following suggested guidelines developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), comparative snap bean herbicide performance field trials were conducted from 1993 to 1995 in New York. Data were obtained on crop injury, weed control, and weed biomass, and crop yield, quality, and losses during harvest. Trifluralin, EPTC, and pendimethalin applied preplant incorporated (PPI) and applications of metolachlor applied preemergence (PRE) provided less than adequate control of redroot pigweed, common lambsquarters, and hairy galinsoga. Cultivation improved weed control with PPI and PRE applications. Metolachlor + fomesafen PRE provided good control of hairy galinsoga, adequate redroot pigweed control, and marginal control of common lambsquarters. Fomesafen applied postemergence (POST), combinations of metolachlor applied PRE with fomesafen or bentazon applied POST, and fomesafen + bentazon applied POST adequately controlled the three weed species without cultivation. Herbicide treatments had little measurable impact on snap bean quality or losses during harvest. Information from product comparison trials may be useful in developing recommendations for growers but may prove less than adequate in providing data necessary for a thorough evaluation of the relative benefits of individual herbicides as intended by EPA guidelines. Difficulties were encountered in following the guidelines, and costs of conducting the product comparison trials for a single crop in one growing region exceeded $90,000 over 3 yr.

Field experiments evaluated pitted morningglory, velvetleaf, and barnyardgrass control in soybean with imazethapyr applied alone and with either crop oil concentrate at 1.0% v/v, a blend of methylated seed oil and organosilicone surfactant, or a blend of methylated seed oil, phosphate esters, and organosilicone surfactant at 0.5% v/v, each with and without a 28% N mixture of urea and ammonium nitrate (URAN) applied at 2.3 L/ha. Treatments were applied at spray volumes of 94 and 9.4 L/ha. Control of each species was often increased with the addition of both oil adjuvants and URAN. The blend of methylated seed oil, phosphate esters, and organosilicone surfactant and the blend of methylated seed oil and organosilicone surfactant were each more effective than crop oil concentrate on pitted morningglory and barnyardgrass, while each oil adjuvant was similar on velvetleaf. The URAN effectively increased imazethapyr control of all species. Control of all species was similar at the spray volume of 9.4 L/ha and at 94 L/ha.

Foxtail emergence patterns were evaluated in spring wheat under three tillage regimes, moldboard plow, chisel plow, and no-till, and three wheat planting dates. The first planting date was as soon as feasible in spring, and the second and third planting dates averaged 9 and 17 d later. Foxtail emergence patterns and seedbank density were evaluated each year for three consecutive years. Green foxtail was the dominant weed species. Tillage regime did not influence initial percent emergence of foxtail. Subsequent percent foxtail emergence was sometimes lower in no-till or chisel plow than in moldboard plow regimes until emergence approached 100%. By the third year, total foxtail plant emergence was greater in no-till and chisel plow than in moldboard plow and also greater in no-till than chisel plow. Earlier planting generally increased percent foxtail emergence until midseason. At 22 d after planting, average emergence of foxtail was 48, 67, and 81% for planting dates one, two, and three, respectively. Delayed planting increased rate of foxtail emergence but decreased density of emerged seedlings. Producers adopting chisel plow or no-till systems can expect to see greater foxtail infestations than in moldboard plow systems. Subsequently, more extensive weed management in reduced tillage systems will be needed to prevent heavy foxtail infestations. Delaying wheat planting may be a viable option for foxtail management through reduced plant densities and more simultaneous emergence patterns.

Devil's-claw and smellmelon are summer annual broadleaf weed problems in the southwest cotton production region. Field studies conducted in 1993 and 1994 evaluated the efficacy of pyrithiobac for postemergence (POST) control of devil's-claw and smellmelon compared with soil-applied fluometuron or prometryn. Pyrithiobac at 0.07 and 0.14 kg ai/ha early POST and 0.14 kg ai/ha mid-POST controlled devil's-claw more than 84% at the late rating. Devil's-claw control with mid-POST applications of pyrithiobac at 0.07 kg ai/ha was reduced when compared with other rates and application timings. Smellmelon control with pyrithiobac ranged from 57 to 84% and, except when applied at 0.07 kg ai/ha early POST, was equivalent to or greater than either fluometuron or prometryn. Crop injury with pyrithiobac treatments 16 d after treatment was 5 to 13%, but 33 d later, was no more than 3%.

Redstem filaree is becoming widespread and abundant on the Canadian prairies. A field study was conducted to determine the growth, development, and seed yield response of redstem filaree when grown under noncropped conditions and planted at various dates throughout the growing season in Alberta. Redstem filaree emerged within 7 to 13 d of planting with an accumulated 57 to 134 growing degree days (GDD). Flowering occurred within 46 to 65 d (327 to 779 GDD) of planting. Plants that emerged in August or later did not flower in that season and survived as winter annuals. Spring-emerging redstem filaree plants matured within 79 to 100 d (729 to 1,193 GDD). Plants that emerged in May and June attained more biomass and produced threefold more seeds than plants that emerged in July or later. Redstem filaree seed production ranged from 2,400 to 9,900 seeds/plant depending on emergence date and environmental conditions. Information from this study will assist in developing integrated management strategies for this increasingly important weed.

Additive series studies were conducted under greenhouse conditions to determine the effects of nitrogen (N) rate and purple nutsedge densities on the yield of ‘California Wonder’ bell pepper. Initial densities of purple nutsedge were 0, 100, 200, and 300 plants/m2. Nitrogen was applied at 70, 140, and 210 kg/ha. Plants were allowed to interfere for 10 wk. There were significant purple nutsedge population density by N rate interactions on bell pepper fruit yield. At 70 kg N/ha, no significant effect of weed population densities was found on fruit yield, whereas at the rates of 140 and 210 kg N/ha there were significant nutsedge density effects. As N rates and nutsedge densities increased, so did purple nutsedge biomass. Linear regression models described the interference. Bell pepper fruit yield reduction was 73% at 210 kg N/ha with an initial nutsedge population density of 300 plants/m2.

Field experiments were conducted to evaluate postemergence (POST)-applied tank mixtures of 560, 1,120, and 1,680 g ai/ha glyphosate with or without 1,120 g ai/ha SAN 582 (proposed name, dimethenamid) as burndown treatments or POST in glyphosate-tolerant soybean. SAN 582 was not antagonistic with glyphosate at the glyphosate rates evaluated. In the burndown study, glyphosate controlled horseweed 98% or more and curly dock 82% or more with or without SAN 582. However, broadleaf signalgrass emerged after the burndown treatments were applied. All tank mixtures that included SAN 582 controlled broadleaf signalgrass 84 to 96%, 6 wk after treatment. In the glyphosate-tolerant soybean study, glyphosate controlled barnyardgrass and johnsongrass present at the time of application 89% or more, regardless of rate. Tank mixtures of SAN 582 with glyphosate controlled late-season flushes of barnyardgrass through residual activity of the SAN 582. Applying SAN 582 with glyphosate improved soybean yield 500 kg/ha over glyphosate applied alone.

The practical application of yield loss prediction models using relative leaf area of weeds is limited due to the lack of a quick and accurate method of leaf area estimation. Leaf cover (the vertical projection of plant canopy on the ground) can be used to approximate leaf area at early stages of plant development. An automated digital image analysis system for measuring leaf cover has been developed. The system has an operator-assisted module aimed at validating the automated functions. The objective of this research was to demonstrate the accuracy of the operator-assisted module under different weed–crop conditions. A laboratory experiment was conducted using simulated weed–crop populations. Two additional field experiments were conducted using corn in competition with: (1) common lambsquarters, barnyardgrass, or a mixture of both species, and (2) a natural weed community. In the laboratory experiment, a narrow linear relation was observed between leaf cover estimated with the operator-assisted module and leaf area measured with an optical area meter (r2 > 0.98). In field experiments, the regression between corn leaf cover estimated by the operator-assisted module and corn leaf area measured with the optical area meter was not as good (r2 < 0.55). The poor performance of the module was probably due to the overlapping and the architecture of corn leaves (especially unexpanded leaves). Nevertheless, the system showed high precision in estimating leaf area of both grassy weeds and broadleaf weeds (r2 > 0.89). Generally, the accuracy of the estimates decreased as the growth stage became more advanced. Apart from its initial purpose as a calibration tool for the automated system, the operator-assisted module can have several potential research applications. It can be used: (1) as an alternative to destructive leaf area measurement at early stages of plant development, (2) as a tool in the study of plant competitive ability, and (3) as an objective and quantitative support to visual observations.

Field experiments were conducted at six locations across the U.S. in 1995 and at two locations in 1996 to determine the yield and grade of slicer type cucumber after treatment with sulfonylurea herbicides. In 1995, thifensulfuron, bensulfuron, or 2,4-D amine was applied postemergence (POST) to cucumber at the initiation of vines. Thifensulfuron and bensulfuron were applied at concentrations between 0 and 2.24 g ai/ha, and 2,4-D amine was applied at 0 to 28 g/ha. Only thifensulfuron applied at 2.24 g/ha (51% of the maximum use rate in soybean) reduced yield of No. 1 cucumber. In 1996, chlorimuron and metsulfuron were applied preplant incorporated (PPI) at rates between 0 and 2.24 g/ha, and atrazine was applied at 0 to 1,120 g/ha. The herbicides were incorporated to a depth of 7.6 cm prior to planting cucumber. Only atrazine applied at ≥ 560 g/ha reduced yield of No. 1 and No. 2 grades of cucumber. The results led us to conclude that these sulfonylurea herbicides, at the low rates used in this research, do not adversely affect yield or grade of field-grown cucumber.
