Field and laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of postemergence johnsongrass control on incidence of maize chlorotic dwarf virus (MCDV) and maize dwarf mosaic virus (MDMV) in corn and to confirm the presence and movement of the blackfaced leafhopper, the insect vector of MCDV. Corn plants surrounded by MCDV- and MDMV-infected rhizomatous johnsongrass were either treated or not treated with nicosulfuron at 35 g ai/ha. Corn tissue samples were taken at the time of treatment and 4, 9, 14, and 21 d after treatment and the presence of MCDV and MDMV was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Virus incidence in treated experimental units was higher at the later sampling dates relative to the nontreated. Earlier differences in incidence of MCDV and MDMV double infection in corn were detected where johnsongrass was controlled. Movement of the insect vector of MCDV was observed within the experimental area after johnsongrass was controlled, but was not significantly different from that in nontreated areas.

In two separate field experiments conducted over time, at-planting preemergence (PRE) applications of sulfometuron at 110 to 150 g ai/ha followed by March applications of sulfometuron at 30 g/ha or metribuzin at 2,580 g ai/ha at the start of the initial (plant cane) growing season controlled more bermudagrass and johnsongrass emerging in sugarcane from rhizome and stolon pieces than standard at-planting followed by March applications of atrazine at 2,240 g ai/ha (no control), metribuzin at 2,580 g ai/ha, or pendimethalin at 2,240 g ai/ha. Treatments containing at-planting applications of imazapyr at 280 g ai/ha or thiazopyr at 560 g ai/ha did not provide levels of control similar to sulfometuron. Crop injury in excess of 10% occurred only when imazapyr at 280 g/ha (18 to 42%) or sulfometuron at 30 g/ha (11 to 32%) was applied in March to emerging sugarcane. Sugarcane stalk numbers, stalk heights, and ultimately cane and sugar yields were increased when compared to the standards with all sulfometuron treatments and when thiazopyr was applied at planting and again in March.

The isopropylamine salt of glyphosate at 420, 560, and 840 g ae/ha applied alone or mixed with the sodium salt of bentazon at 840 g ai/ha, chlorimuron at 9 g ai/ha, the sodium salt of fomesafen at 350 g ai/ha, or the ammonium salt of imazethapyr at 70 g ae/ha was evaluated for control of large crabgrass and broadleaf signalgrass. Neither grass was controlled by bentazon, fomesafen, or chlorimuron. Imazethapyr controlled large crabgrass and broadleaf signalgrass 30 and 72%, respectively, 3 weeks after treatment (WAT). Glyphosate at all rates controlled both grasses 100%. Control 3 WAT was unaffected by mixing bentazon, chlorimuron, fomesafen, or imazethapyr with glyphosate. Broadleaf signalgrass control 1 WAT was reduced 4 to 15% by mixing bentazon with glyphosate.

Field experiments were conducted at East Lansing and Clarksville, MI, to evaluate the efficacy of imazamox, imazethapyr, and CGA-277476 plus quizalofop applied postemergence in wide- (76-cm) and narrow- (19-cm) row soybean. Soybean injury from all herbicides was minimal 14 days after treatment (DAT), except for CGA-277476 at 79 g ai/ha plus 69 g ai/ha quizalofop, which caused 30% soybean injury at the Clarksville location. Adding 4 g ai/ha CGA-248757 to 65 g ai/ha CGA-277476 plus quizalofop reduced common ragweed control, but increased redroot pigweed control in wide rows compared to 79 g ai/ha CGA-277476 plus quizalofop. Imazamox at 35 and 45 g ai/ha provided greater common ragweed and common lambsquarters control than imazethapyr at 70 g ai/ha 28 DAT. All herbicide treatments controlled velvetleaf. Common ragweed and common lambsquarters control by all herbicide treatments was enhanced in narrow- compared to wide-row soybean 56 DAT as was redroot pigweed control by CGA-277476 treatments. Total weed biomass and soybean yield in wide-row soybean treated with imazamox at 45 g/ha was not different from the hand-weeded control. In narrow-row soybean, soybean yield was equal to the hand-weeded control for 35 and 45 g/ha imazamox and 70 g/ha imazethapyr. Postemergence herbicide treatments resulted in less weed biomass and greater soybean yield in narrow- compared to wide-row soybean.

Field experiments were conducted from 1987 to 1990 to investigate the combination of cultural and chemical methods for control of Amaranthus spp. in corn. The tolerance of corn hybrids to herbicides or herbicide combinations was dependent on application rate. The early season threshold level for a mixed population of Amaranthus spp. occurred 3.5 wk after emergence. Density of Amaranthus spp. from 155 to 495 plants/m2 caused corn yield reduction of 50%. A quadratic model was derived relating percentage of yield reduction vs. duration of weed competition. The results emphasize the importance of using herbicides, cultural practices, and competition thresholds for an integrated weed control approach of Amaranthus spp. in corn.

Field experiments were conducted in 1994 and 1995 to evaluate weed control in imidazolinone-resistant corn with postemergence applications of imidazolinone and sulfonylurea herbicides. Imazethapyr controlled 100% of redroot pigweed, jimsonweed, and eastern black nightshade. Control of fall panicum with imazethapyr was inconsistent, with control ranging from 42 to 85%. Imazethapyr provided less than 55% control of common lambsquarters and 43% of large crabgrass. Imazethapyr plus either atrazine, 2,4-D, or dicamba increased control of common lambsquarters compared to imazethapyr alone. Fall panicum control was > 95% with nicosufluron. CGA-152005 and MON 12000 did not control eastern black nightshade. In 1995, corn yield was greater with the hand-weeded check compared to all herbicide treatments. The greatest return over herbicide cost with imazethapyr was obtained with imazethapyr plus atrazine. Nicosulfuron plus CGA-152005 provided the greatest return over herbicide cost when averaged across years.

Field experiments were conducted at three locations in Mississippi in 1995 and 1996 to evaluate labeled and alternative herbicides and herbicide combinations for weed desiccation prior to soybean harvest. Weeds evaluated included pitted morningglory, hemp sesbania, spotted spurge, common cocklebur, and sicklepod. Soybean yield and harvestable soybean losses were not affected by preharvest herbicide treatments, spray volume, or surfactant concentration. Soybean moisture was most consistently reduced by glufosinate compared to the untreated and other herbicides and herbicide combinations evaluated. Most desiccation treatments at Stoneville and Brooksville resulted in foreign material similar to the weed-free check. Glufosinate at 0.84, 1.1, and 1.4 kg ai/ha desiccated all weeds evaluated 90% or more with no differences among rates. The addition of 3.4 or 6.7 kg ai/ha sodium chlorate to 0.28 kg ai/ha paraquat, 1.1 and 2.2 kg ai/ha glyphosate, or 0.28 and 0.56 kg ai/ha oxyfluorfen increased desiccation of most weeds evaluated, with no difference between sodium chlorate rates. In some instances, reducing application volume from 281 to 94 L/ha improved pitted morningglory desiccation when 0.28 g/ha paraquat was applied alone. There were no differences between 0.25 and 0.50% (v/v) surfactant for most parameters evaluated.

With the shift to earlier maturing soybean cultivars, harvest interference data are needed at low weed densities that will not reduce yield, but may affect soybean quality or harvesting efficiency. Field experiments were conducted in 1995 and 1996 to determine the density of five weeds necessary to warrant desiccation treatments. There were no consistent differences in losses of harvestable soybean due to weed density. Common cocklebur increased foreign material and soybean moisture at a greater rate than did hemp sesbania, ivyleaf morningglory, or redroot pigweed, with sicklepod intermediate among these species. Soybean test weight was reduced by 17, 13, and 59 g/L for each plant/meter of row with redroot pigweed, sicklepod, and common cocklebur, respectively, whereas hemp sesbania and ivyleaf morningglory did not affect test weight. However, all species evaluated increased damaged soybean seeds by 8.2 to 11.1% for each plant/meter of row. Combine speed was not affected substantially by the weed densities evaluated.

Various chemical and mechanical weed control treatments for kidney bean production were evaluated on irrigated, sandy loam sites from 1993 to 1995 near Staples, MN. Weed biomass can be controlled either mechanically or chemically, but a combination of the two gave the most effective and dependable weed control over years. Good weed control by either mechanical or chemical means reduced white mold infection of dry bean because of better aeration of dry bean plants and thus less favorable conditions for infection. Dry bean seed yields were inversely related to weed yields, and weed competition was similar from indigenous stands of either grass or broadleaf weeds. Row cultivation was more effective than rotary hoeing for controlling weeds, reducing white mold infection of dry bean, and increasing dry bean seed yields.

Field studies were conducted in 1995 and 1996 at three locations in Illinois to determine soybean response to combinations of thifensulfuron and bentazon. Thifensulfuron was applied at 2.2 to 8.8 g ai/ha alone or in combination with 280 to 560 g/ha of bentazon. Soybean injury 30 d after treatment ranged from 0 to 22% when thifensulfuron was applied alone at 2.2 g/ha. Increasing thifensulfuron rate to 8.8 g/ha increased soybean injury to a range of 12 to 44%. Soybean grain yield was significantly reduced compared to the yield of untreated soybean when thifensulfuron was applied at 4.4 and 8.8 g/ha in two of five and four of five experiments, respectively. The addition of bentazon to thifensulfuron consistently reduced soybean injury and stunting. In many cases, increasing the bentazon rate to 420 g/ha decreased soybean injury from thifensulfuron to a greater extent than 280 g/ha. In cases where thifensulfuron decreased soybean yield, the addition of 420 or 560 g/ha of bentazon restored yields to levels that were not lower than untreated soybeans. These studies demonstrate that thifensulfuron at 2.2 to 8.8 g/ha in combination with bentazon at 420 g/ha may be safely applied to soybean for broadleaf weed control.

Greenhouse and field studies were conducted to determine the interaction of clethodim sprayed in low volume with pyrithiobac or bromoxynil and to determine the influence of these mixtures on large crabgrass control. A low-volume, air-assisted spraying system was calibrated to deliver 26 L/ha and was compared to a conventional hydraulic fan spraying system calibrated to deliver 140 L/ha. Greenhouse data indicated that carrier volume had no effect on large crabgrass control with clethodim. The addition of pyrithiobac to clethodim in mixture was antagonistic compared to control with clethodim applied alone. The addition of bromoxynil to clethodim in mixture was synergistic. Field studies showed similar results.

Pluchea lanceolata (DC.) C. B. Clarke # PLULA is an aggressive, pernicious, rhizomatous evergreen weed in the Asteraceae. In other literature, P. lanceolata Oliv. & Hiern has also been mentioned (Anonymous 1992, pp. 731 and 1147). With heavy root branches and dense subterranean parts, P. lanceolata is a common weed of sandy and saline tracts of the dry plains of the northwestern parts of India (Dakshini and Sabina 1981; Inderjit 1993; Rice 1995). It also occurs in North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan (Nasir and Ali 1972; Oliver 1885). In India, it occurs both in cultivated and uncultivated areas. It causes considerable damage to winter and summer season crops. The control measures through conventional methods such as deep plowing, burning of aboveground parts, and herbicides are found to be unsuccessful. This rapidly spreading perennial weed apparently cannot be used for forage because of its disagreeable bitter taste (Anonymous 1976). Allelopathy has been reported as a probable cause of P. lanceolata interference (Inderjit and Dakshini 1990, 1992b, 1994a, 1994b, 1996a, 1996b; Inderjit et al. 1996).

The genus Conium is comprised of two or three temperate species of biennial herbs with highly divided leaves and compound umbels of small white flowers. All parts of C. macula tum have long been recognized as being highly poisonous; it was the plant used to kill Socrates in BC 399 (Gledhill 1985; Holm et al. 1997; Hyam and Pankhurst 1995). Conium is a member of the Umbelli ferae or Apiaceae, the carrot family, which accommodates 300 genera and between 2,500 and 3,000 species.
