The ultimate source of energy in compact objects is investigated. The model is a highly flattened body of mass ≳ 104M, supported by centrifugal force in two directions and by gas and radiation pressure in the third. The properties of this model are compared with those nearly spherical supermassive stars introduced by Hoyle and Fowler.
