This study examined the hypothesis that global and selective inhibition are mediated by distinct mechanisms: respectively, a peripheral mechanism, indexed by heart rate slowing, and a central mechanism, indexed by cortical but not autonomic measures. Three varieties of a Go-NoGo task were presented in which the Go signal required an index finger response rapidly followed by a middle finger response. The NoGo signal required the inhibition of (a) both responses (global inhibition), (b) the middle finger response (simple selective inhibition), or (c) the index finger response of one hand and the middle finger response of the other hand (complex selective inhibition). As anticipated, global inhibition was indexed by heart rate slowing. Most importantly, heart rate slowing was also elicited by selective inhibition and was more pronounced for complex than simple selective inhibition. These findings suggest that global and selective inhibition are mediated by one rather than two mechanisms and that heart rate is sensitive to the demands placed on this inhibition mechanism.

This study examined the joint and independent effects of experimentally manipulated social contexts and individual differences in hostility and perceived social support on physiological responses to a social stressor, while illustrating the use of the interpersonal circumplex for integrative social psychophysiological research. Undergraduate women completed a speech task in a supportive, neutral, or provoking context and completed measures of hostility and perceived social support. The provoking context evoked the largest blood pressure and heart rate (HR) responses, followed by the neutral and the supportive context. Social context also influenced HR and electrodermal reactivity during task preparation. Hostility elicited higher systolic blood pressure (SBP) reactivity during preparation, speech, and recovery. Perceived social support interacted with context to affect SBP and HR during speech and preparation. The roles of interpersonal characteristics and contexts in the physiological stress response and the utility of interpersonal methods in studying these associations are discussed.

Real data often do not approximate the normal distribution. Under nonnormal conditions, psychophysiologists who use parametric statistics may be testing with inadequate power and/or testing a measure of location (i.e., the mean) that does not represent the desired portion of the distribution for statistical comparison. The purpose of this paper is: first, to provide psychophysiologists with a method to investigate group distributional characteristics; second, to evaluate the distributional characteristics of heart period and respiratory sinus arrhythmia in human adults and newborns; third, to demonstrate the increased statistical power that can accompany the selection of an alternative statistical analysis for nonnormal data. Suggestions are provided on how to analyze nonnormal data.

Event-related potentials were recorded from 11 subjects after ingesting caffeine (250 mg) or placebo. Subjects were instructed to attend selectively to stimuli with a specified color (red or blue) in order to react to the occurrence of a target within the attended category. Reaction times revealed faster responses for the caffeine condition, whereas no differences in strategy were observed. Color attention effects were identified as frontal selection positivity, occipital selection negativity, and N2b, whereas target detection was reflected in P3b. Effects of treatment were found as a more positive-going frontal P2 component in the caffeine condition. In addition, an interaction between attention and treatment could be observed on the N2b component. This pattern of results suggests that caffeine yields a higher overall arousal level, more profound processing of both attended and unattended information, and an acceleration of motor processes.

The effects of mental fatigue on planning and preparation for future actions were examined, using a task switching paradigm. Fatigue was induced by “time on task,” with subjects performing a switch task continuously for 2 hr. Subjects had to alternate between tasks on every second trial, so that a new task set was required on every second trial. Manipulations of response–stimulus intervals (RSIs) were used to examine whether subjects prepared themselves for the task change. Behavioral measurements, event-related potentials (ERPs), and mood questionnaires were used to assess the effects of mental fatigue. Reaction times (RTs) were faster on trials in which no change in task set was required in comparison with switch trials, requiring a new task set. Long RSIs were used efficiently to prepare for the processing of subsequent stimuli. With increasing mental fatigue, preparation processes seemed to become less adequate and the number of errors increased. A clear poststimulus parietal negativity was observed on repetition trials, which reduced with time on task. This attention-related component was less pronounced in switch trials; instead, ERPs elicited in switch trials showed a clear frontal negativity. This negativity was also diminished by time on task. ERP differences between repetition and switch trials became smaller with increasing time on task.

The impact of evaluative observation on cardiovascular reactivity and adaptation to recurrent psychological stress was evaluated in 162 undergraduate men and women. All participants performed three mental arithmetic tasks with or without evaluative observation. Impedance cardiographic, blood pressure, task performance, and stress appraisal measures were recorded for each task. Evaluative observation moderated the effects of task repetition on cardiac reactivity but not vascular reactivity. The introduction of evaluative observation disrupted cardiac adaptation, resulting in a resurgence of β-adrenergic cardiac reactivity (p < .005), whereas the removal of evaluative observation promoted cardiac adaptation. Evaluative observation also increased stress appraisals and slowed task performance. The results support the dual process theory of habituation, rather than stimulus comparator theory, but only partially support cognitive appraisal theory.

The present study investigated psychophysiological responses to paced respiration of different frequencies. Twenty men and 20 women (mean age: 24.3 years) underwent five breathing conditions (paced with 0.15 Hz, 0.20 Hz, 0.25 Hz, 0.30 Hz, and unpaced), each lasting 5 min. As dependent physiological measures heart period, and different heart period variability (HPV) parameters were assessed. Psychological variables consisted of mood estimates as well as rated accuracy and effort to follow the pacing rhythm. HPV decreased with higher breathing frequencies, under paced and unpaced conditions, whereas mood ratings did not change. Subjects indicated more effort and less accuracy in following the pacing signal, the more its frequency differed from their spontaneous breathing frequency. The comparison of a spontaneous breathing condition with a frequency-matched paced condition revealed that pacing per se provoked a reduction in heart period. Because this decrease was not accompanied by changes in any of the HPV frequency components, their validity as measures of autonomic control needs to be questioned.

A fundamental question in attention theory concerns the earliest processing stages that can be modulated by selective attention. A series of experiments is reported in which very early attention effects are found under specific conditions in the frequency-following potential (FFP), a brain stem response to low-frequency tone stimuli. In two experiments, stimuli of two different modalities were applied, and attention directed to one of the modalities. In two further experiments, only auditory stimuli were presented. In the first of these last two experiments, a dichotic paradigm with sustained attention to one ear was used, in the second a monotic paired-stimuli paradigm was used, in which the first stimulus served as reference for the second one. Only in the last experiment significant attention effects were found in the latency, but not in the amplitude of the FFP. The results show that a very early attention effect on the latency of the FFP can be demonstrated, but only under highly specific conditions. The size and preconditions of the attention effect suggest that it reflects subtle intramodal tuning mechanisms in the cochlea or in the lower brain stem.

We evaluated the effects of selective slow-wave sleep (SWS) deprivation and time-of-night factors on cognitive performance upon awakening. Ten normal men slept for 6 consecutive nights in the laboratory: 1 adaptation, 2 baseline, 2 selective SWS deprivation, and 1 recovery night. Cognitive performance was assessed by means of a Descending Subtraction Task after 2, 5, and 7.5 h of sleep. There was an almost complete selective SWS suppression during both deprivation nights, and a significant SWS rebound during the recovery sleep. Regarding cognitive performance, a progressive linear decrease of sleep inertia upon successive awakenings was found during all experimental nights except for the recovery night. In addition, a significant decrease of sleep inertia was observed upon the morning awakening of the second deprivation night for the measure of performance speed, and a significant increase of sleep inertia upon the morning awakening of the recovery night for the measure of performance accuracy. The results show that cognitive performance upon awakening is adversely affected by sleep depth and that, during the sleep–wake transition, cognitive performance accuracy is more impaired than performance speed.

Many previous studies have demonstrated that the visual N1 component is larger for attended-location stimuli than for unattended-location stimuli. This difference is observed typically only for tasks involving a discrimination of the attended-location stimuli, suggesting that the N1 wave reflects a discrimination process that is applied to the attended location. The present study tested this hypothesis by examining the N1 component elicited by attended stimuli under conditions that either required or did not require the subject to perform a discrimination. Specifically, the N1 elicited by foveal stimuli during choice-reaction time (RT) tasks was compared with the N1 elicited by identical stimuli during simple-RT tasks. In three experiments, a larger posterior N1 was observed in choice-RT tasks than in simple-RT tasks, even when several potential confounds were eliminated (e.g., arousal and motor preparation). This N1 discrimination effect was observed even when no motor response was required and was present for both color- and form-based discriminations. Moreover, this discrimination effect was equally large for easy and difficult discriminations, arguing against a simple resource-based explanation of the present results. Instead, the results of this study are consistent with the hypothesis that the visual N1 component reflects the operation of a discrimination process within the focus of attention.

Evoked and induced magnetic brain activity measured over the left hemisphere were tested for their specificity to language-related processing. Induced activity refers to oscillatory alterations time locked but not phase locked to the stimulus. Words, false font stimuli, and two types of nonverbal patterns were presented visually while subjects performed a nonlinguistic visual feature detection task. The comparison of evoked and induced brain activity around 200 ms after stimulus onset revealed differential sensitivity to the stimuli. The M180 component of the evoked magnetic field was larger at the processing of words and false font stimuli compared with nonverbal stimuli. The induced magnetic brain activity in the 60-Hz band at a compatible latency range was correlated with the familiarity of the visual Gestalt. Sensitivity to language-specific information processing can be concluded if a parameter differentiates the word condition from the nonlexical conditions. Such a difference was observed at sensors located over the frontal-temporal scalp regions for induced but not evoked magnetic brain activity. Thus, evoked and induced magnetic brain activity revealed a differential sensitivity to elements of cognitive processing during the given task.

The error-related negativity (ERN) is a response-locked brain potential generated when individuals make mistakes during simple decision-making tasks. In the present study, we examined ERN under conditions of reward and punishment, among participants who scored extremely low or high on the socialization scale of the California Psychological Inventory (CPI). Participants completed a forced-choice task, and were rewarded for correct responses in half the trials, and punished for incorrect responses in the remaining trials. A significant interaction between socialization (SO) and condition revealed that low-SO participants produced smaller ERNs during the punishment task than during the reward task, whereas high-SO participants produced similar ERNs in both conditions. Reaction time and electromyogram data essentially bolster the interpretation that the ERN effects reflect differences in error salience for high-SO and low-SO participants, and are consistent with the avoidance-learning deficits seen in psychopathy.

Heart rate was recorded from five different groups of children (ages 7, 10, 12, 14, and 20 years) while they were performing an auditory selective attention task. The participants were instructed to count rare tone pips embedded in a series of standard tone pips presented at one (attended) ear while ignoring rare and standard stimuli presented at the other (unattended) ear. A pattern of anticipatory heart rate deceleration followed by acceleration was associated with rare tone pips at the attended ear but not with rare tone pips that should be ignored. The absence of differential sensitivity of heart rate responses to rare tone pips presented at the unattended ear was observed for all age groups. These findings were interpreted to suggest that the ability to ignore irrelevant target stimuli has reached mature levels during middle childhood. The depth of anticipatory deceleration increased until age 14, suggesting that the ability to maintain attentional set continues to develop beyond childhood.

Emotional reactions to naturally occurring sounds (e.g., screams, erotica, bombs, etc.) were investigated in two studies. In Experiment 1, subjects rated the pleasure and arousal elicited when listening to each of 60 sounds, followed by an incidental free recall task. The shape of the two-dimensional affective space defined by the mean ratings for each sound was similar to that previously obtained for pictures, and, like memory for pictures, free recall was highest for emotionally arousing stimuli. In Experiment 2, autonomic and facial electromyographic (EMG) activity were recorded while a new group of subjects listened to the same set of sounds; the startle reflex was measured using visual probes. Listening to unpleasant sounds resulted in larger startle reflexes, more corrugator EMG activity, and larger heart rate deceleration compared with listening to pleasant sounds. Electrodermal reactions were larger for emotionally arousing than for neutral materials. Taken together, the data suggest that acoustic cues activate the appetitive and defensive motivational circuits underlying emotional expression in ways similar to pictures.

The present study assessed the effects of occlusion duration and attention on components of the respiratory-related evoked potential (RREP). Twenty-nine channel evoked potential recordings were obtained from 12 young adults exposed to a pseudorandom sequence of 100-, 200-, 400-, and 800-ms inspiratory occlusions, under attend and ignore conditions. Results demonstrated that the duration of an inspiratory occlusion does not affect RREP components systematically, highlighting the importance of the onset of the occlusion in producing the cortical responses. Attention resulted in augmentation of the N1, P2, and P3 components but did not affect the early latency Nf and P1 components. P1, N1, and P3 occurred with shorter latencies in the attend condition. One subject with poor duration estimation ability displayed substantially delayed P3 latency. This result highlights the relationship between P3 and perception of respiratory somatosensory information.

We examined the relationship between force and rate of force development aspects of movement dynamics and electroencephalogram motor components as reflected in the lateralized readiness potential (LRP). Using self-paced tasks, in Studies 1 and 3 we investigated whether differential speed and accuracy constraints in discrete and repetitive finger force production tasks influenced the LRP. These studies showed that speed tasks produced larger LRP than accuracy tasks regardless of whether the movement type was discrete or repetitive. In Studies 2 and 4 we studied four conditions with two levels of force and two levels of rate of force development. The largest LRPs were found with the greatest rate of force development. Overall, the four studies demonstrated that preparation for differential rates of force development is a major component reflected in the LRP.

Thought disorder in schizophrenia may involve abnormal semantic activation or faulty working memory maintenance. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while sentences reading “THE NOUN WAS ADJECTIVE/VERB” were presented to 34 schizophrenic and 34 control subjects. Some nouns were homographs with dominant and subordinate meanings. Their sentence ending presented information crucial for interpretation (e.g., The bank was [closed, steep]). Greatest N400 activity to subordinate homograph-meaning sentence endings in schizophrenia would reflect a semantic bias to strong associates. N400 to all endings would reflect faulty verbal working memory maintenance. Schizophrenic subjects showed N400 activity to all endings, suggesting problems in contextual maintenance independent of content, but slightly greater N400 activity to subordinate endings that correlated with the severity of psychosis. Future research should help determine whether a semantic activation bias in schizophrenia toward strong associates is reflected in ERP activity or whether this effect is overshadowed by faulty verbal working memory maintenance of context.

The present study investigated the effects of lead stimulus modality on modification of the acoustic startle reflex during three reaction time tasks. In Experiment 1, participants (N = 48) were required to press a button at the offset of one stimulus (task relevant) and to ignore presentations of a second (task irrelevant). Two tones that differed in pitch or two lights served as signal stimuli. Blink startle was elicited during some of the stimuli and during interstimulus intervals. Skin conductance responses were larger during task-relevant stimuli in both groups. Larger blink facilitation during task-relevant stimuli was found only in the group presented with auditory stimuli, whereas larger blink latency shortening during task-relevant stimuli was found in both groups. Experiment 2 (N = 32) used only a task-relevant stimulus. Blink magnitude facilitation was significant only in the group presented with tones, whereas blink latency shortening was significant in both groups. Experiment 3 (N = 80) used a go/nogo task that required participants to press a button if one element of a compound stimulus ended before the second, but not if the asynchrony was reversed. The offset asynchrony was varied between groups as a manipulation of task difficulty. Startle magnitude facilitation was larger during acoustic than during visual stimuli and larger in the easy condition. The present data indicate that startle facilitation in a reaction time task is affected by stimulus modality and by task demands. The effects of the task demands seem to be independent of lead stimulus modality.

As an indicator of cortical excitability, direct current (DC) potentials were recorded from thirsted subjects before, during and after drinking 400 ml of water. Self-rated thirst was distinctly reduced after drinking. Compared with control conditions in which the subjects remained thirsty, during drinking a widespread negative potential shift occurred averaging over −70 μV at Cz. At the transition from the consumatory phase to the postconsumption phase, a slow positive potential shift commenced that was most pronounced over the anterior cortex (averaging over +40 μV at Fz) and persisted for more than 3 min after drinking. Control conditions excluded muscle activity, ocular movements, and changes in body fluid and serum osmolality as possible non-neuronal sources of the DC-potential changes. The sequence of negative and positive potential shifts associated with drinking indicates a coordinate regulation of cortical excitability that may facilitate consumatory behavior and its context-dependent encoding into memory.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded during a visual two-choice reaction time (RT) task in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and control boys selected using strict inclusion and exclusion criteria. No group differences were found in mean RT and correct responses. Although early occipital ERPs were not affected in the ADHD group, the peak latency of early anterior ERPs (N1, P1, N2) was significantly delayed. ADHD showed a larger effect of stimulus type on the frontal negativity (N530) and the posterior late negativity (nSW) and a smaller effect of stimulus type on anterior N2 and posterior P3b amplitude. The development of N530 and P450 amplitude across blocks of five trials was analyzed using orthogonal polynomial trend analysis of variance software. In the control group, P450 amplitude to “frequent” stimuli reduced across blocks. In the ADHD group, N530 amplitude increased for “rare” stimuli across blocks. It is suggested that the ADHD group showed a lack of automatization of the categorization process with increasing time on task for which they compensated by controlled attentional processes.
