We investigated the influence of sympathetic nervous system processes on mucosal immunity by comparing the effects of beta-adrenoceptor blockade with 40 mg propranolol and placebo on secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) at rest and during paced serial arithmetic, cold pressor, and submaximal cycling. These tasks produced patterns of cardiovascular activity indicative of combined alpha- and beta-adrenergic, alpha-adrenergic, and beta-adrenergic activation, respectively. The effectiveness of the beta blockade was confirmed by the attenuation under propranolol of the shortening of the cardiac preejection period and the tachycardia elicited by mental arithmetic and exercise. The cold pressor test did not affect sIgA under either the placebo or the propranolol. Mental arithmetic increased sIgA concentration, and this increase was not blocked by propranolol. Exercise elicited increases in both sIgA concentration and sIgA secretion rate, which were not diminished by beta blockade. These data suggest that sIgA is not regulated by beta-adrenergic mechanisms.

Transcranial cortical magnetic stimulation (CMS) is a noninvasive, non-noxious procedure to induce perceptual attenuation when applied concomitant to sensory stimuli. To investigate the perceptual timing of simple stimulus features in the somatosensory modality, we applied right hemisphere CMS at different intervals following a stimulus delivered to the left hand. Different intervals between peripheral stimuli and CMS were defined according to the components of the somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEP), previously obtained in response to the same stimulus. Perceptual attenuation was maximal when CMS coincided with the primary cortical response (parietal N20 potential); conversely, perception of stimulus intensity was not modified when CMS was concomitant with the N200 and P300 potentials. Using small CMS intensities, a “perceptual dip” was observed when CMS arrived in coincidence with the N120 potential, a SEP response thought to be originated in part in the second somatic area. Our results support the view that both N200 and P300 are post-perceptual responses. The results also suggest that the cortical processes active during the N20 and N120 potentials may be essential for the conscious perception of somatosensory stimuli delivered to the hand.

The role of the autonomic nervous system in secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) responses to laboratory challenge was explored in a study in which sIgA and cardiovascular activity were recorded at rest and during mental arithmetic and paced breathing. These tasks were selected to preferentially engage the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, respectively. Mental arithmetic elicited a mixed pattern of increased alpha- and beta-adrenergic activity and a reduction in parasympathetic activity; diastolic blood pressure, total peripheral resistance, and systolic blood pressure increased, preejection period shortened, and heart rate variability decreased. In contrast, paced breathing primarily elicited an increase in parasympathetic activity; heart rate variability increased. Mental arithmetic also provoked an increase in sIgA concentration but no change in saliva volume, whereas paced breathing affected neither sIgA concentration nor saliva volume. These data suggest that sIgA responses to laboratory challenges are mediated by sympathetic rather than parasympathetic processes.

In the current study, we examined lipid and cardiovascular responses to an acute stressor among men with and without a parental history of myocardial infarction. 37 men were selected from a large group who completed medical history questionnaires and interviews. Twenty-two men who denied parental history of heart disease (negative parental history) were compared with 15 men with one or both parents who had suffered a myocardial infarction (positive parental history). Total cholesterol, high- and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, heart rate, and blood pressure were measured at rest and during a videotaped speech stressor. Positive parental history men had significantly higher low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and blood pressure at baseline, significantly lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels at baseline, and significantly larger total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol reactivity, relative to negative parental history men. Because parental history is a risk factor for subsequent cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, these data suggest that lipid reactivity to stress may be biologically important.

Previous findings suggest that motoric response preparation cannot be initiated in parallel with memory scanning. In the present study, response preparation was initiated with the aid of a precue to examine whether such preparation can be maintained or continued while memory scanning is active. In Experiment 1, each trial began with a colored square indicating which hand might be needed to respond. A probe letter's memory set membership determined whether the primed response should be made or withheld. Lateralized readiness potentials were initiated by the square precue and continued to increase after letter presentation, suggesting that once response preparation had been initiated it was continued in parallel with memory scanning. Experiment 2 suggested that the difficulty of the concurrent memory search had little effect on the continuation of response preparation. The results support the view that motoric response preparation consists of at least two qualitatively distinct phases—initiation and continuation.

Twenty-four 8–10-year-old children (13 very low birthweight, 11 control) performed a lexical decision and a semantic classification task while event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded. Both groups were within normal range on standardized reading tests, but the very-low-birthweight group had lower scores. There were no differences between groups in reaction times or accuracy for ERP tasks. On analyses of P2a (246 ms anteriorly), P2p (336 ms posteriorly), N2a (356 ms anteriorly), and N2p (396 ms posteriorly) peaks and a late positive component, control children showed greater right than left asymmetry at P2p and greater left than right asymmetry at N2a. Very-low-birthweight children showed less asymmetry. For the late positive component, both groups showed greater left than right asymmetry, which was more marked for the semantic classification task. The results suggest that very-low-birthweight children display differing cortical utilization during reading.

Variation of the P300 component was studied in normal children and adults during an auditory oddball paradigm. In children, the target stimuli that were preceded by a large number of standard stimuli elicited about twice as large P300 with a significantly shorter latency, a more widespread distribution, and an earlier positivity in the frontal area than those that were preceded by a small number of standard stimuli. The P300 variation was not as marked in adults as in children. Based on the context updating theory of the P300, the finding suggests that a long intertarget interval (ITI) results in a profound decay of the neural representation of the target stimulus in children; consequently, more resources are needed to update the neural representation, and the target may even be processed as a novel input. The P300 variation may provide information about the brain functions related to memory, attention, and orienting in children. This variation should be considered when assessing cognitive brain functions with event-related potentials in children.

The capacity of working memory has been suggested to differ among people and these differences affect performance in a wide variety of cognitive tasks. This study explored electrophysiological correlates of individual differences in working memory capacity by means of event-related potentials. Thirty-four healthy students performed two- and five-choice reaction time tasks. In the two-choice reaction time (2CRT) task, two digits (3 and 7) were presented visually with probabilities of .20 and .80. In the five-choice reaction time (5CRT) task, five digits (3, 4, 5, 6, and 7) were presented equiprobably in a random order. Participants were required to press a button corresponding to each digit with a different finger. Working memory capacity of each participant was assessed by the reading span test originated by M. Daneman and P.A. Carpenter (1980). Participants with high reading span produced larger P300s than did persons with low reading span in the 5CRT task, but the difference was not significant in the 2CRT task. It had been suggested that individual differences in working memory capacity would affect initial stages of information processing as early as 300 ms after stimulus onset.

Physiological response stereotypy is a well-established psychophysiological construct. Unfortunately, specifying parameters of tasks that evoke differing physiological responses has proved difficult. We have recorded cardiovascular activity while subjects carried out executive and attentional tasks that differed not only psychologically but also in their sensitivity to brain pathology and to pharmacological manipulations. Finapres recordings were made of 30 healthy, normal subjects (mean age 24 years) performing two tasks involving differing aspects of sustained attention and two tasks involving differing aspects of spatial working memory and planning. Measures of heart rate and blood pressure, heart rate and blood pressure variability, and their spectral derivatives revealed differing patterns of cardiovascular adjustment between the “attentional” and “planning” tasks. Each test raised blood pressure, but changes in blood pressure and heart rate variability were confined to the attentional tasks. These findings suggest distinct brain mechanisms subserving different forms of arousal.

This study examined the effect of response selection and execution on P3 latency during the performance of simple reaction time (RT) and stimulus–response compatibility tasks. Response time on these tasks was defined in terms of RT and movement time (MT). Event-related brain potentials were recorded from 67 female participants concurrently with the performance measures. On the simple RT task, the distance of the response button from the home button was varied (7, 15, and 23 cm). When stimulus evaluation demands were minimal, response execution affected P3 latency, with increased response button distance resulting in increased P3 latency. However, these movement effects were modest, and in most protocols, would not be a confounding factor. The stimulus–response compatibility task examined the interaction of stimulus evaluation demands and response requirements. RT, MT, and P3 latency were affected by stimulus congruency, whereas RT and P3 amplitude were affected by response compatibility.

The effect of level of muscle tension on the perception of painful stimuli was assessed in 13 chronic back pain patients, 14 subjects at high risk for chronic back pain, and 14 matched healthy controls. Subjects received painful intracutaneous electric stimuli to the forearm or the lower back while they produced either high or low muscle tension levels. Visual analog scale (VAS) ratings of acute pain were obtained after each trial. Electroencephalograms, electromyograms, skin conductance levels, and blood pressure were measured during the trials. Although subjective pain ratings were not significantly affected by muscle tension levels, the chronic pain patients displayed elevated N150 and N150/P260 amplitudes of the somatosensory-evoked potentials in the low as compared to the high muscle tension condition. The high risk group showed a trend toward higher N150 amplitudes in the low as compared to the high tension condition. The results of this study partially support the hypothesis that increases in muscle tension might serve as a pain-reducing mechanism in chronic pain patients and those at risk for chronicity, thus leading to a vicious pain-tension cycle.

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring was used to investigate the cardiovascular correlates of naturally occurring interpersonal interactions. Participants were New York City traffic agents, who routinely engage in conflict-prone communication with the public under relatively fixed conditions. Talking with the public, supervisors, or coworkers was associated with levels of systolic and diastolic blood pressure and heart rate that exceeded a resting baseline. Blood pressure was higher when agents were talking to the public than when they were talking to coworkers or engaged in a noncommunicative work task. Systolic blood pressure response during communication was associated with the agent's mood. Blood pressure effects associated with communication appear to persist after the communication has ceased. Implications of these data for the reactivity hypothesis of the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease are discussed.

Attentional modulations of event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were measured when subjects were cued to attend to a visual quadrant or to a ring-shaped region of visual space to detect infrequently presented targets within the attended region. Spatial attention directed to quadrants was reflected in modulations of sensory-evoked P1 and N1 components at lateral posterior sites and enhanced negativities (Nds) at midline electrodes that started around 150 ms poststimulus. When attention was directed to ring-shaped regions, no modulations of P1 and N1 amplitudes were found, and Nd effects observed at midline electrodes were delayed by about 50 ms. These findings indicate that behavioral effects observed both when attention is directed to contiguous regions and to general areas of visual space may be caused by different underlying processes. Intraperceptual “sensory gating” mechanisms operating in a way suggested by the notion of an attentional “zoom-lens” may be responsible for the selection of single regions, quadrants, or hemifields. When relevant regions are more complex, spatial selectivity will affect primarily postperceptual processes.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) were elicited with auditory stimuli, and spectral analysis was performed on the poststimulus electroencephalographic (EEG) activity to assess how variables that influence the P300 affect spectral parameters of the resultant ERP. In Experiment 1, a no-stimulus condition was compared with a single repeated tone that was either ignored or counted. In Experiment 2, an auditory oddball paradigm was used in which the subject ignored all stimuli, counted only the target, or counted both the target and the standard stimuli in different conditions. In Experiment 3, stimulus probability was manipulated in separate conditions (.20, .50, .80), with the subject required to count the target stimulus. Delta and theta band spectral power increased whenever P300 amplitude increased. However, as the attentional requirements increased across tasks, alpha-1 and alpha-2 power and mean frequency increased. The findings indicate that auditory stimulus processing modulates the EEG more than just by adding ERP components to the epoch.

The electroencephalogram (EEG) was used because of its dimensional complexity to establish a differentiation of divergent versus convergent thought, considered fundamental modes of cortical processing. In 28 men, the EEG was recorded while solving tasks of divergent and convergent thinking and during mental relaxation. The EEG during divergent thought was compared between subjects achieving high versus low performance scores on this type of task. The dimensional complexity of the EEG was greater during divergent thinking than during convergent thinking. While solving tasks of divergent thinking, subjects with high performance scores had a lower EEG dimension than did subjects with low scores, in particular over frontal cortical areas. The changes were not reflected in single frequency bands of conventional EEG analysis. Based on Hebb's view of neuron assemblies as functional processing units, the higher EEG complexity during divergent than convergent thinking could be the result of the concurrent activation of a greater number of independently oscillating processing units.

We tested the hypothesis that psychopathy is associated with abnormal processing of semantic and affective verbal information. In Task 1, a lexical decision task, and in Task 2, a word identification task, participants responded faster to concrete than to abstract words. In Task 2, psychopaths made more errors identifying abstract words than concrete words. In Task 3, a word identification task, participants responded faster to positive than to negative words. In all three tasks, nonpsychopaths showed the expected event-related potential (ERP) differentiation between word stimuli, whereas psychopaths did not. In each task, the ERPs of the psychopaths included a large centrofrontal negative-going wave (N350); this wave was absent or very small in the nonpsychopaths. The interpretation and significance of these differences are discussed.

Temporal stability is an important fundamental quality when measuring sleep parameters, yet it has been infrequently assessed. Generalizability theory was used to estimate the short-term temporal stability of five variables commonly used to characterize insomnia: sleep onset latency, total sleep time, wake after sleep onset, time in bed, and sleep efficiency. Estimates were calculated for 32 elderly primary insomniacs and 32 elderly normal sleepers, both in the lab and at home, using both sleep logs and polysomnography (PSG). A week of recording using either PSG or sleep logs was typically sufficient to achieve adequate stability (defined as G coefficient of at least 0.80) with some notable exceptions: (a) when using log-derived measures with insomniacs, a 3-week average was necessary for wake after sleep onset and (b) more than a 2-week average was necessary for sleep onset latency. Because of the substantial commitment involved in the physiological recording of sleep, alternative forms of aggregation are considered with the intent of improving temporal stability.

Psychophysiological measures such as the lateralized readiness potential (LRP) have been used to study information processing in the Eriksen flankers task. The data provided by these measures are consistent with a continuous flow theory, which proposes that the output of stimulus evaluation is continuously available to the response channels. Cohen et al. (1992) realized this theory in a connectionist model and showed that its behavior corresponded to that of human subjects in the flankers task. We report here a modification of the model and an analysis of the degree to which simulated LRPs (based on the activation functions of the response units of the model) resemble the actual LRPs of human subjects in the same task. Across a variety of different experimental conditions and outcomes, there was a marked correspondence between the simulated and actual LRPs. These observations strengthen the propriety of the connectionist model and of the continuous flow theory on which it is based.

In the context of picture viewing, consistent and specific relationships have been found between two emotion dimensions (valence and arousal) and self-report, physiological and overt behavioral responses. Relationships between stimulus content and the emotion-response profile can also be modulated by the formal properties of stimulus presentation such as screen size. The present experiment explored the impact of another presentation attribute, stimulus motion, on the perceived quality of the induced emotion and on its associated physiological response pattern. Using a within-subject design, moving and still versions of emotion-eliciting stimuli were shown to 35 subjects while facial muscle, heart rate, skin conductance, and emotion self-reports were monitored. The impact of motion was dramatic. Self-report and physiological data suggested strongly that motion increased arousal, had little impact on valence, and captured and sustained the subject's attention to the image.

Research has indicated that performance on heartbeat counting tasks may be influenced by beliefs about heart rate. Sixty male subjects were administered the Schandry heartbeat counting task after viewing fast, slow, or no heart rate feedback. Subjects were also administered the Whitehead signal-detection type task. Results indicated that subjects who received fast or no heartbeat feedback performed better on the Schandry task than subjects who received slow feedback. Feedback presentation did not affect performance on the Whitehead task. These results suggest that the Schandry task is influenced by external variables (expectations, beliefs) beyond pure awareness of “discrete” visceral sensations and, thus, may not be as powerful a method for determining awareness of individual heartbeats as some other paradigms.
