X-ray fluorescence spectrometry was used in mapping and spot analysis modes, to help identify which elements are useful for understanding the composition of ancient papyrus inks, for 25 papyri from four age groups. We report seven elements (Al, Si, P, S, Ca, Ti, Fe) which provide sufficient contrast to be useful for mapping analysis, and 16 elements (P, S, Cl, K, Ca, V, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Rb, Sr, Nb, Ag, Ba, and Pb) which show significant differences through time. Only one element – Pb – showed sufficient contrast in the thin ink layer to be significantly different when measured on the ink and adjacent papyrus. There is greater complexity in the elemental compositions of the papyrus and ink than can be understood with a study this size and additional work is required to develop and explain the patterns observed here.

New Ca8−xPbxCdBi(VO4)7 with the whitlockite-type structure were prepared by a standard solid-state method in air. Le Bail decomposition was used to determine unit-cell parameters. Structural refining was carried out by Rietveld's method. It is found that Bi3+ cations located partially in M1 and M2 sites along with calcium, while M3 site is settled in half by Pb2+-ions. Second-harmonic generation demonstrate highest non-linear optical activity and along with dielectric investigations indicate polar space group R3c.

Archaeometrists use a variety of analytical methods to determine trace elements in ancient Greek silver coins, for provenance studies, understanding social and technological change, and authentication. One analytical problem which is little documented is understanding the horizontal spatial heterogeneity of coin elemental composition in micro-sampled areas, which are usually assumed to be uniform. This study analysed ten ancient Greek coins representative of silver circulating in the Aegean region in the sixth to third centuries BC. Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectrometry was used to map the spatial distribution of elements on coins that were abraded to remove the patina. Time of flight-secondary ion mass spectrometry was then conducted on selected coins, mapping an area ~100 × 100 µm and depth profiling from 0 to 10 µm. These data revealed the three-dimensional elemental complexity of the coins, in particular, the heterogeneity both in the patina and beneath it. These data will guide future authentication and provenance studies of larger sample sets of ancient Greek coins including the use of line scanning for laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry data collection rather than spot analyses, and non-destructive analytical techniques such as X-ray fluorescence spectrometry.

The paper describes an approach for automated crystal structure solution from powder diffraction data using the multi-population genetic algorithm (MPGA). The advantage of using co-evolution with the best individual exchange, compared with the using of the evolution with a single genetic algorithm without interpopulation exchange, is shown. As an example, the paper describes the use of MPGA for solving the [Pt(NH3)5Cl]Br3 crystal structure, having the tetragonal I41/a space group [a = 17.2587(5) Å, c = 15.1164(3) Å, Z = 16, unit-cell volume V = 4502.61(10) Å3]. The MPGA convergence charts and the atomic positions distribution maps of the MPGA populations are given. The description of the final structure solution is also shown.

Two examples of anionic complexes having vapochromic behavior are investigated: [K(H2O)][Pt(ppy)(CN)2] “Pt(ppy)” and [K(H2O)][Pt(bzq)(CN)2] “Pt(bzq)”, where ppy = 2-phenylpyridinate and bzq = 7,8-benzoquinolate. These monohydrate-potassium salts exhibit a change in color from purple to yellow [Pt(ppy)] and from red to yellow [Pt(bzq)] upon heating to 110 °C, and they transform back into the original color upon absorption of water molecules from the environment. Available only in the form of polycrystalline samples, no structural information on such compounds is accessible, due to highly overlapping peaks in powder diffraction profiles. We use in situ Pair Distribution Function measurements on powder samples to investigate the dynamics of the structural changes induced by temperature variations. By means of a multivariate approach, we were able to extract dynamic structural information from collected profiles without using prior knowledge on the static crystal structure of the compounds. The critical temperature and the characteristics of the vapochromic transition have been identified, as well as the main structural changes causing it.

This paper describes new features implemented in the EXPO2014 software and aimed at assisting crystallographers in the use of quantum-chemistry calculations in combination with experimental powder diffraction data. The implemented tools are useful in particular in two important steps of the process of crystal structure determination from powder diffraction data: (1) preparing accurate structural model suitable for crystal structure determination by real-space methods; (2) validating structure determination. The combination of experimental/quantum-chemical methods in EXPO2014 is now managed easily thanks to the following capabilities: (a) converting crystallographic data in input files and reading molecular geometry from output files of a wide variety of computational chemistry packages (GAMESS-US, NWChem, Gaussian, CRYSTAL, ABINIT, QUANTUM ESPRESSO); (b) optimizing the geometry of a molecule using Open Babel's force fields; (c) a graphical interface to run semi-empirical quantum calculation by MOPAC (Molecular Orbital PACkage); (d) producing input file for dispersion-corrected density functional theory.

The phase identification of a polycrystalline mixture by X-ray powder diffraction data is often requested for studying materials interesting to different scientific and technological fields: chemistry, pharmaceutics, mineralogy, archeometry, forensic science, etc. The availability of user friendly computer programs, able to carry out qualitative phase analysis in efficient and possibly automatic way, is extremely useful to the scientific community involved in powder diffraction. QUALX2.0, the evolution of QUALX, is a freely distributed software for qualitative phase analysis. Based on the traditional search–match method, it is able to manage both a commercial database (PDF-2 maintained by ICDD), and a freely available database (POW_COD generated by the structure information contained in the Crystallography Open Database). QUALX2.0 is continuously improved in terms of computing and graphic tools. Correspondingly, the database POW_COD is suitably modified to make efficient the operations of search. The search–match approach can be facilitated by the use of restraints, when available, involving the chemical composition, the kind of compound(s) (e.g., organic, inorganic, etc.), the symmetry (space group, crystal system), the unit-cell parameters and/or volume, the crystal properties (measured and/or calculated crystal density, crystal color). An outline of the main features of QUALX2.0 and an example of application is described.

In this work, a poorly water-soluble drug (efavirenz) was mechanically activated by ball-milling. The effect of the mechanical activation on the dissolution behavior was investigated considering changes in the particle size and morphology. The powder diffraction was used to follow the comminution process, verifying phase compositions, and crystalline domain size. The interplay between domain and grain size was studied in relation to the solubility rate, through specific dissolution tests. Finally, the morphological characterization has allowed to complete the physical–chemical characterization of the milled powders. This study demonstrated that the mechanical activation of the drug leads the particle size reduction and, with a long milling time, morphological changes. The grain size reduction is not always sufficient to increase the solubility: morphology and agglomeration grade play an important role in the dissolution process.

This study investigates the morphology changes in thin diblock copolymer (DiBCP) films occurring in the interaction with modified nanoparticles (NPs). Magnetite (Fe3O4) and silica (SiOx) were prepared and used. Poly(pentyl methacrylate-b-methyl methacrylate) (PPMA-b-PMMA) (70/30 mol mol−1, hcp cylinders of the PMMA phase) DiBCP were employed to prepare thin films having thicknesses to realize standing cylinders in pure DiBCP films. The investigations aimed at two topics: (1) morphology after controlled incorporation of organo-modified NP (gold, silver, Fe3O4, SiOx) and (2) additional solvent vapour annealing (SVA) with tetrahydrofuran (and chloroform for comparison). The laterally ordered morphology in thin films was examined by GISAXS and atomic force microscopy. Keeping the same type of morphology in nanocomposites, the dimensions of the periodic nanostructure altered depending on type and amount of incorporated NP. It was found that SiOx clusters enlarge the lateral distance of the PMMA cylinders, whereas metallic NPs reduce this parameter. Applying SVA improves the phase separation slightly, whereas lateral distances were kept constant or were reduced a little. Switching of domain orientation upon SVA could not be detected in the presence of NPs located at the polymer/substrate interface.

A combined X-ray powder diffraction (XPD) and high-resolution extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) at the Co and Ga K-edges study has been performed for LaCoO3 and LaGaO3 ceramics, the latter sample was used as a reference without spin transitions. Based on the X-ray diffraction data, we have found that isotropic atomic displacement parameters (ADP) or mean-squared displacement of the Co–O bond exhibit gradual growth below ~50 K, wherein the strain dependencies testify rapid increase below 150 K for the LaCoO3 having rhombohedral structure. No similar features could be observed for LaGaO3 sample. Above ~100 K the isotropic ADP of the Co–O bond indicate a gradual growth, whereas strain curves show distinct bend near the spin-state transition temperature at about 150 K. According to the EXAFS data, the correlated parallel mean squared relative displacement (MSRD||) of Co–O and Ga–O bonds exhibit a gradual growth above 150 K; however, in the LaCoO3 this parameter is notably bigger. It is supposed that at low temperature the cobalt ions are dominantly in low-spin (LS) state, while certain amount of Co3+ ions located within the surface layer of the crystallines have high-spin state (HS). Temperature growth leads to a gradual transformation of the HS state of the cobalt ions into the highly-hybridized intermediate-spin (IS) state, while the cobalt ions located in the inner part of the crystallines remain LS configuration up to 150 K. Further temperature increase leads to a spin transition of the Co3+ ions located within the crystallines from the LS state into the IS one.
