Dielectric capacitors for energy storage are of great importance in modern electronics and electric systems. It is a challenge to realize the high energy density while maintain the low dielectric loss. We investigated an ultra high breakdown electric field of 1.1 GV/m, which is approaching the intrinsic breakdown, in aromatic polythiourea, a new dielectric material that serves a high energy density of 23 J/cm3 as well as high charge-discharge efficiency above 90%. The molecular structure and film surface morphology were also studied, it was proved a polar amorphous phase and glass state material could significantly suppress the high field conduction to several orders smaller compared with regular polymer dielectric materials, which are usually semi-crystalline and in rubber phase.

Additive nanofabrication by two-photon polymerization (TPP) has recently drawn increased attention due to its sub-100 nm resolution and truly three-dimensional (3D) structuring capability. However, besides additive processes, subtractive process is also demanded for many 3D fabrications. Method possessing both additive and subtractive fabrication capabilities was rarely reported. In this study, we developed a complementary 3D micro/nano-fabrication process by integrating both additive two-photon polymerization (TPP) and subtractive multi-photon ablation (MPA) into a single platform of femtosecond-laser direct writing process. Functional device structures were successfully fabricated including: polymer fiber Bragg gratings containing periodic holes of 500-nm diameter and 3D micro-fluidic systems containing arrays of channels of 1-µm diameter. The integration of TPP and MPA processes enhances the nanofabrication efficiency and enables the fabrication of complex 3D micro/nano-structures that are impractical to produce by either TPP or MPA alone, which is promising for a wide range of applications including integrated optics, metamaterials, MEMS, and micro-fluidics.

The purpose of this work is the deposition of films in order to increase the corrosion resistance of AISI 304 steel, which is a material used to construct the reactors for bioethanol production. This deposition inhibits the permeation of corrosive species to the film-metal interface. Thin films were prepared by radio-frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF-PECVD) method using plasmas of hexamethyldisiloxane/argon/oxygen mixtures excited by signals of different powers. The plasma was generated by the application of RF power of 13.56 MHz to the sample holder while keeping grounded the topmost electrode and the chamber walls. The effect of the RF power on the properties of the samples was investigated by perfilometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results of the corrosion resistance tests of the AISI 304 steel were interpreted in terms of the energy delivered to the growing layer by plasma excitation power.

To investigate template releasing process in nanoimprint lithography, template releasing energy (i.e. surface energy between the template and the resist polymer) in various releasing conditions is evaluated using multi-axial controlled releasing system. The releasing energy is in proportion to the surface free energy of the template, but does not depend on the velocity of releasing. Also, a peeling mode where the template is released from a single side and a lift-off mode where the template is removed in the perpendicular direction to the resist are examined. The result shows that the releasing energy by peeling mode is lower than that by lift-off modes.

In this work, we take advantage of injection molding as a high volume and repeatable method to create surface areas for the growth of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). Ultraviolet lithography, combined with deep reactive ion etching, was used to generate micro-features over a relatively large surface area of a silicon wafer. The micro-featured silicon wafer was used as a mold insert for the micro-injection molding process to create polystyrene and low density polyethylene surfaces. Micro-geometry was used to alter the effective surface stiffness of the polymer substrate. Created samples were characterized via scanning electron microscopy and tensile testing. hMSCs were seeded onto samples for initial studies. Actin and vinculin were visualized through ICC to compare cytoskeletal elements. Changes in cell morphology were examined using ICC. Results indicate that injection molding of microfeatured substrates is a viable technique to produce surfaces amenable to stem cell growth.

We used sporopollenin prepared from Lycopodium Clavatum to encapsulate living yeast cells as a model for probiotics. The microencapsulation of cells was achieved by using the trilite scars of the sporopollenin microcapsules which can open up by compressing the sporopollenin into a pellet. Such compressed pellets were exposed to an aqueous suspension of yeast cells in the presence of a biocompatible surface active agent which allowed living cells to be loaded inside the sporopollenin particles by the influx of liquid to the sporopollenin interior as the deformed microcapsules re-inflated to their original state. We demonstrated that the cells viability and biological activity is preserved after the microencapsulation in the sporopollenin. Such microencapsulation technology could find application in preserving cells from mechanical stress and aggressive environments which can be used in protection of probiotics in food formulations.

The interface between a matrix and its reinforcement is critical to the final composite properties. There are different ways to enhance bonding between the reinforcing fiber and the matrix, based mainly on surface plasma treatments which usually decrease the fiber tensile strength. In this research, atomic layer deposition (ALD) was tested as a possible way to enhance the chemical bonding between the fiber and matrix in the hope that it would not effect the fiber tensile strength. Microbond tests were carried out to measure the effect of an ALD aluminum oxide (Al2O3) coating on the fiber/matrix interfacial shear strength, and the fiber tensile strength was measured in order to assess whether this treatment harms the fiber strength. The ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers that were coated by ALD with aluminum oxide (Al2O3) showed a significant increase in the interfacial shear strength without reducing the fibers’ ultimate tensile strength.

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and several naturally occurring polyols or their derivatives (like glycerol) have been used as cryoprotective agents (CPAs) for many years. However DMSO shows high cytotoxicity and affects differentiation of cells, so it needs to be removed immediately after thawing, whereas polyols are comparatively weaker cryoprotective agents. Furthermore, some types of cells are extremely sensitive to damage during freezing and thawing, so cannot be cryopreserved properly using current CPAs. So there is a great need to develop newer cryoprotective agents with lower cytotoxicity and high efficiency for many biological and medical purposes.

Recently we showed that carboxylated poly-L-lysine, which is classified as a polyampholyte, has a cryoprotective effect on cells in solution without any other cryoprotectant. Polyampholytes are charged polymers with both positively and negatively charged groups.

Therefore, in this research, we are developing a completely synthetic polyampholytes by radical polymerization and will try to elucidate the key parameters of cryoprotective properties. Here we chose reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization as the mode of polymerization as it is a kind of living polymerization method and can give control over the molecular weight and composition of the copolymer. We evaluated the livingness of the 1:1 copolymer with methacrylic acid (MAA) and 2-Dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) with 2-(Dodecylthiocarbonothioylthio)-2-methylpropionic acid as the RAFT agent and the polymer solution showed good cell viability of L929 cells after cryopreservation at 15% copolymer concentration.

Ternary nanocomposites of poly (lactic acid) (PLA) were produced by melt blending with two types of elastomers and five types of organoclays to obtain improved mechanical properties such as tensile strength, modulus and impact strength. One of the elastomers is a random copolymer of ethylene and glycidyl methacrylate (E-GMA) and the other one is a random terpolymer of ethylene-butyl acrylate-maleic anhydride (E-BA-MAH). Organically modified montmorillonites (OMMT) were utilized as nanofillers. XRD, DSC, tensile and impact tests were done on the injection molded samples. FTIR, SEM and TEM analyses are still in progress. As preliminary results, thermal analysis showed that the addition of compatibilizers and organoclays does not have a distinct effect on the thermal properties of the composites, and no evidence of nucleation activity of compatibilizers or organoclays was found. For all types of organoclays, the nanocomposites produced with E-GMA exhibited better mechanical properties in comparison to nanocomposites containing E-BA-MAH, especially for the impact strength.

Magnetic polyolefin-based nanocomposites were fabricated through a facile one-pot thermal decomposition of organo-metallic precursor, i.e. Fe(CO)5 in polymer-solvent solution condition. The whole fabrication includes dissolution of polyolefin-based hosting matrix in refluxing organic solvent followed by the injection of metallic precursor to perform the in-situ thermal decomposition step. The particle sizes, morphology and dispersion quality of these in-situ synthesized magnetic nanoparticles were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Room temperature mössbauer spectrum analysis was used to determine the species of these magnetic nanoparticles. Room temperature magnetic property investigation was utilized to further reveal the magnetic behaviors of these nanocomposites by specifying the saturation magnetization and coercive forces. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to determine the thermal stability of these as-prepared nanocomposites and the particle loadings. The formation mechanisms of these magnetic particles were proposed from the evidence of TEM observations and detailed evolutions are detailed as well.

A thermo-responsive hydrogel was prepared on the basis of terpyridine endfunctionalized polystyrene-block-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) diblock copolymer. As a first level of assembly, the copolymer was dissolved in a selective solvent to yield micelles bearing terpyridine ligands at the extremity of the coronal chains. The second level of self-assembly was triggered upon addition of metal ions to the micellar solution. Mechanical properties of the accordingly obtained micellar gel were finally characterized by rotational rheometry, below and above the lower critical solution temperature.

Two-photon fabrication is a powerful method of fabricating complex microstructures. Superresolution by methods analogous to stimulated emission depletion (STED) has been described previously, enabling sub-100 nm imaging with 800 nm light. STED-related methods of enhancing imaging resolution require photoresists with exposure conditions for which the photoresist exhibits negative contrast, i.e., image density decreases with increasing exposure from the depletion beam. We have observed decreasing voxel size with increasing exposure during two-photon initiated polymerization of acrylate- and methacrylate-based photoresists, that is, negative imaging contrast, γ < 0, independent of the type of photoinitiator. Negative contrast is not observed in epoxy-type photoresists containing photoacid generators. An investigation of the exposure conditions has led us to conclude that radical-radical recombination at high exposure is responsible for negative contrast. Results of the investigation, discussion of the proposed mechanism for negative contrast and implications for two-photon superresolution will be presented.

In this paper, we developed textile-based sensors for measuring vital signs. We fabricated conductive fiber made from organic conjugated polymers without the use of inorganic materials. While the tensile strength of pure poly-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene/poly-4-styrene sulfonic acid (PEDOT/PSS) fiber was low, it was unsuitable to fabricate textile-based devices. To avoid this drawback, we examined the composite fibers composed of PEDOT/PSS and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) to obtain good mechanical properties as well as a high electronic conductivity. PVA was used as a matrix component to connect colloidal PEDOT/PSS particles within the fibers. We succeeded continuous and uniform spinning from the mixed solution of PEDOT/PSS and PVA through the modified wet spinning process. Tensile strength of the composite fiber increased to twice that consisted only of PEDOT/PSS. In addition, the electric conductivity increased about three times by the combination with PVA. Textiles made of conductive fibers behaved as flexible electrodes for the detection of heartbeat.

A molecular dynamics simulation was performed to study the polymer filling process in nanoimprint lithography for a bi-layered resist. The bi-layered resist consisted of PMMA resins with different molecular weights. When the mold cavity size became smaller than the polymer size of the top layer resist, the required force to fill the cavity became large. The molecular weight of the top layer dominated the filling characteristics in the bi-layered resist process.

The internal micro/nano-structure of anisotropically oriented polymer/CNTs composites determines their macroscopic properties. However, the connections between the two are not fully understood. The varying of CNT concentration, preparation method, and a thermodynamic parameter (e.g. temperature) can all play interconnected role. In this work, the macroscopic electrical conductivity was measured perpendicular to the film thickness of an insulating polymer (isotactic PolyPropylene, iPP) and a nano-composite of iPP with 5 weight percent of CNT. The thin films studied were sheared (anisotropically nano-structured) and non-sheared (with random internal structure). In general the effect of melt shearing induces anisotropy on the electrical transport properties of the iPP/CNT films in directions parallel and perpendicular to the direction of orientation. Our results show that for the pure iPP, resistivity slightly increases with shear at higher temperatures. When CNTs are introduced, there is a large difference between the resistivity of the sheared and non-sheared nanocomposite. The sheared PNCs when the CNTs are aligned parallel to each other, have higher resistivity, which is possibly due to the higher concentration at which the percolation threshold occurs in this arrangement. The resistivity decreases overall, as the temperature increases from 0 to 50 °C. These results show that CNTs can be used to control and fine tune the desired macroscopic physical properties of nanocomposites, by concentration and orientation, such as electrical conductivity, for applications where such properties are necessary.
