Shape Change in Compressively Loaded Single Crystals

Abstract

This paper presents a study of compressively loaded single crystals of tantalum. Strain gauges, interferometry, optical microscopy, and micrometers were employed to measure the deformation caused by loading. All of the measures indicated non-uniform deformation at plastic strains of less than 0.01. By using these measurements we were able to show that surface creation and shape changes of the sample introduce additional components which affected the measurement recorded by the strain gauge.
