Abstract

A model of radiation induced phase transformations in quartz using the old idea of Weissmann and Nakajama is developed. The kinetics of these phase transitions is described taking into account intermediate phase formation. A model of the final radiation induced metamict state of quartz is suggested. The metamict state consists of amorphized matrix SiO2+X, where x ≈0.15 (radioglass), in which pure silicon precipitates are included.
