Based on deep analysis of technological data of the sinter plant and experiments, the chlorine input in the sinter mix was identified as the main factor influencing the dust precipitation efficiency in ESP. On the basis of this perception two different ways of emission control where successfully worked out and realized: first, the control of chlorine input with the charge, second, the selective filter dust removal. The annual average of dust content in clean gas was reduced from 49.7 mg/m3 (2004) to 24.6 mg/m3 (STP) (2006). In parallel this measures lead to a reduction of Dioxin emission level < 1 ng/m3 pt (STP).

The action of ArcelorMittal Maizières in the domain of physical chemistry of metallurgical slags and liquid steel has always been sustained. In particular, this activity gave birth to several models among which the cell model that describes the properties of metallurgical slags (and of liquid oxide inclusions) has a special place. This model, along with other specific models describing the metallic phases, has been included in a home-built equilibrium calculation code CEQCSI (Chemical EQuilibrium Calculations for the Steel Industry) to allow easy calculations by non specialist users. Several applications to steel elaboration will be presented. An insight into the development of new models such as the Generalized Central Atom model is also given. The application domain of this latter model is high alloyed and segregated steel grades and the same formalism is also used to improve the performance of the cell model for slags.

The aim of the research is to produce an algorithm for scrap quality determination which can be on-line integrated in the combined process model. The method combines simple metallurgical relationships for residual elements with complete reduction in steel and complex distribution based assemblages for some other elements.

The end blow manganese behavior in BOF process was assessed through analysis of an industrial data base.
The available literature suggests that the main operational factors to influence the end blow manganese behavior in BOF are: manganese input, slag volume, oxidation level and temperature. The large extension of the industrial data base has made possible to separate the influence for each factor. Then correlations between end blow manganese and these factors have been obtained.

Asymmetric hot rolling has been found to decrease the rolling loads, to increase recrystallisation kinetics and to refine the grain size. Thereby this rolling practice opens the way to save energy, to decrease hot band thickness, to enlarge formats, to increase strength, to reduce alloying additions and to improve formability.

Nakayama Steel Works LTD. has succeeded in attaining the cooling rate (105 -106 K/s) necessary for amorphous layering technique by using the innovative idea of immediately cooling the spraying flame. Amorphous alloy (Fe70Cr10P13C7) formed by the new technique displays a corrosion resistance more than 500 times higher than the one of SUS316L in aqua-regia immersion test, while the similarly formed amorphous magnetic alloy film (Fe81B13Si4C2) indicates high magnetism of 15.4 kGauss in magnetic flux density.
