As a youth entering the sixth form to study Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics I enjoyed the riches of the school's mathematics library and in particular three books which appealed to me, A mathematician's apology [1], A book of curves [2] and On growth and form [3].

Hardy's book [1] is one that an impressionable, young mathematician should not read unguided. It left me with the impression that the proper pursuit of mathematics was as a pure subject, of no use or application, to be studied for its own sake; to my regret, I held to this view for several years before finally being able to shake it off through teaching Newtonian mechanics. Looking across mathematics teaching today I seem to observe great interest in geometry, number and algebra ‘curiosities’ that are rooted entirely in mathematics. This in itself is no bad thing, since it clearly draws us and our students into the fascinating world of mathematics. But what of the applications of mathematics? Might they be equally fascinating? Surely we do not want to lure our students into Hardy's trap?

In this brief Article, using the elementary theory of differential equations as well as some basic economic theory, we will develop several estimates for national health expenditures for the United States: one using a linear model and three using non-linear models. We will derive the nonlinear models first and then compare them to the linear one in order to see if they differ significantly. While these estimates are for the United States, the methods used here, because they are robust, could be used for any country. Statistical information may be obtained from the World Bank databases which store health statistics by country [1].

What we will do here is estimate the total health costs as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) if no further copayments are required. In other words, we are seeking to estimate the total cost of health care as a percentage of GDP when all health care costs are covered by insurance and government subsidy. Several models will be discussed here since such estimates may be made using a variety of assumptions. There is no ‘best’ model, although such a decision is possible when comparing the estimates to actual data.

Is the shortest path from A to B the straight line between them? Your first response might be to think it's obviously so. But in fact you know that it's not quite that straightforward. Your sat-nav knows it's not that straightforward. It asks whether you would like it to find the shortest route or the fastest route, because finding the best path depends on knowing what exactly you mean by ‘long’. Likewise, if you're on a walk in the mountains, there's a good chance you'd rather follow the path around the head of the valley, rather than heading down the steep slope and up the other side.

The same sorts of considerations apply in mathematical worlds. I use the mountainside image because it is my preferred way of thinking of a Riemannian metric. Pick an abstract surface S. A Riemannian metric on S gives a well-behaved distance function. By force of habit I tend to picture S as sitting somehow within the physical world. Probably, I'm looking at it from the outside. But if I change viewpoint, so that I am walking around on S, I can picture how the topography affects the idea of the ‘shortest path’.

A shape is called equable if its area and perimeter are numerically equal relative to some given system of units. For example, if a square is equable, then its side, a, must satisfy 4a = a2. So there is only one equable square, and it has side 4.

It is easy to investigate this idea for other shapes. Though not connected with this problem, the work of Imre Lakatos suggested a generalisation to us. Lakatos showed that Euler's classical formula V + F = E − 2 for polyhedra could be extended when the notion of tunnels was introduced [1].

What is an axiom? The meaning of the term ‘axiom’ varies between different fields of study. In philosophy it means a statement that is accepted without argument, while in physics the term ‘postulate’ is used and it means a theory that was verified in an experiment, and will be considered as true unless it is disproved by other experiments.

In mathematics the notion of ‘axiom’ is used in two related but distinguishable meanings: ‘logical axioms’ and ‘non-logical axioms’. Logical axioms are certain statements that are always true, and from them all tautologies of the language can be derived. Non-logical axioms are statements that are taken to be true, to serve as a premise or starting point for further reasoning and arguments.

Recently a friend kindly made me a birthday card whose background consisted of rows and rows of digits, some 3000 in all. There appeared to be no discernible pattern in the digits. Perhaps they had been taken from a table of random numbers. They were certainly not the opening digits of the decimal parts of π or , although they might, so far as I knew, have been consecutive digits of either number in some section remote from the decimal point.

On thinking about this, I realised that they must be the opening digits of the decimal part of the square root of some whole number. Indeed, they must be the opening digits of the decimal parts of the square roots of infinitely many positive integers. It is remarkably easy to prove this and the argument is simple enough to be appreciated and understood in school classrooms at GCSE level.

If no two of three non-collinear points share the same x-coordinate, then the parabola y = a2x2 + a1x + a0 through the points is easily found by solving a system of linear equations. That is but one of an infinite number of parabolas through the three points. How does one find the other parabolas? In this note, we find all parabolas through any three non-collinear points by reducing the problem to finding the equation of a parabola by using rotations.

The parabola y = a2x2 + a1x + a0 has an axis of symmetry parallel to the y-axis. Other parabolas have an axis of symmetry that is parallel to some line y = mx. We focus on the angle θ that the axis of symmetry makes with the y-axis, as in Figure 1, so that tanθ = 1/m. To find the parabola associated with θ that goes through three non-collinear points, we rotate the three points counterclockwise by θ, find the equation of the parabola, and then rotate the parabola (and the three points) counterclockwise back by −θ so that the parabola goes through the original points.

Curves are given in polar coordinates (r, θ)by equations of the form r = f (θ), where for f (θ) > 0 all θ. Consider curves which are symmetric about the origin O, so that, f(θ + π) = f (θ) for all θ. For such a curve, its interior is the set {(r, θ) : 0 ≤ r ≤ f (θ)}. Further, assume that the curve is convex. Recall that a closed curve is convex if a line segment between any two of its points has no points exterior to the curve [1], [2, pp. 198-203]. We call these curves M-curves, because the curves are fundamental objects in Minkowski geometry, where they are called Minkowski circles or simply circles [3, 4]. That application is briefly discussed in the Section 4 but is not required for our purposes.

Examples of M-curves are displayed in Figures 1 to 6. In order to express these curves as functions in rectangular coordinates, we need axes.

We can obtain a two-fold symmetric figure by folding a square sheet of paper in the middle and then cutting along some curves drawn on the paper. By making two perpendicular folds through the centre of the paper and then cutting, we can obtain a four-fold symmetric figure. We can also get an eight-fold symmetric figure by making a fold bisecting an angle made by the two perpendicular folds before cutting. But it is not possible to obtain a three-fold, five-fold or six-fold symmetric figure in this way; we need to make more folds before cutting. Making a three-fold (respectively five-fold and six-fold) figure involves the division of the angle at the centre (360°) of a square sheet of a paper into six (respectively ten and twelve) equal parts. In other words, we need to construct the angles 60°, 36° and 30°. But these angles cannot be obtained by repeated bisections of 180° by simple folding as in the making of two-fold, four-fold and eight-fold figures. In [1], we see that each of the constructions of 60° and 30° applies the fact that sin 30° = ½ and takes only a few simple folding steps. The construction of 36° is more tedious (see, for example, [2] and [3]) as sin 36° is not a simple fraction but an irrational number. In this Article, we show how to make, by paper-folding and cutting a regular pentagon, a five-pointed star and create any five-fold figure as we want. The construction obtained by dividing the angle at the centre of a square paper into ten equal parts is called a pentagon base. We gained much insight from [2] and [3] when developing the method for making the pentagon base to be presented below.

Finding an expression for the length of a curve is one of the simpler geometric applications of the integral. If f is a function with a continuous derivative, then the expression gives the length of the curve y = f (x) on an interval [a, b]. However, after writing out the integrand for familiar functions such as y = x2 and y = sin x, it quickly becomes apparent that, in general, finding an antiderivative is a challenge. Of course, a computer can give accurate approximations for the value of the integral for the length of a curve, but it would be nice to find the exact length rather than a decimal approximation. In his work on geometry (from 1637), Descartes stated that he believed it was not possible to determine the exact lengths of curves. However, just twenty years later, William Neile was able to find the length of arcs of semicubical parabolas (see Katz [1]). These curves have the form y = kx3/2 and are usually the first examples or exercises given to students since the resulting integral is very easy to compute. In this paper, we are going to examine this curve and other related curves and consider problems such as the following: find rational numbers a and b so that the length of the curve over the interval is an [a, b] integer. As we shall see, problems such as this provide a variety of opportunities for undergraduate students to explore some interesting mathematics arising from a few simple and accessible questions.

The main goal of this paper is to give a deeper understanding of the geometrical inequality proposed by Martin Lukarevski in [1]. In order to formulate our results we shall introduce and use the following notation throughout this paper. Let A1A2A3 be a triangle a1, a2, a3, the lengths of the sides opposite to A1, A2, A3 respectively, P an arbitrary inner point of it xi, the distance of P from the side of length ai. Let r, R be the inradius and circumradius of the triangle hi, the altitude belonging to side ai, Δ the area and finally let α be a real parameter. We adopt also the use of Σui to refer the sum taken over the suffices i = 1, 2, 3. Now we are in the position to reformulate the original problem into a more general form namely: find bounds for Σxαi in terms of r and R. The main results of our investigation are summarised in the following theorem.

This Article deals with the following problem.

Problem: Find positive integers x, y and z with x < y < z such that

x + y, x + z, y + z and x + y + z are squares. (1)

The interest in this problem arose from a conversation between the first two authors at The Times Listener Crossword Setters’ Dinner in March 2017. The Listener was a weekly magazine published by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) from 1929 until 1991. Its main purpose was to reproduce the text of broadcast talks. However, from 1930 onwards it also contained a crossword, which was acknowledged to be the hardest cryptic crossword in a national weekly. When the magazine ceased publication, the crossword was ‘rescued’ by The Times newspaper and has appeared therein on Saturdays for over 25 years.

Difference equations have a wide variety of applications, including fluid flow analysis, wave propagation, circuit theory, the study of traffic patterns, queueing analysis, diffusion theory, and many others. Besides these applications, studies into the analogy between ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and difference equations have been a favourite topic of mathematicians (e.g. see [1] and [2]). These applications and studies bring to light the similar character of the solutions of a difference equation with a fixed step size and a corresponding ODE.

Also, an important numerical technique for solving both ordinary and partial differential equations (PDEs) is the method of finite differences [3], whereby a difference equation with a small step size is utilised to obtain a numerical solution of a differential equation. In this paper, elements of both of these ideas will be used to solve some intriguing problems in pure and applied mathematics.

The following Japanese Temple geometry theorem appears in Fukagawa and Rigby [1]:

Thoerem 1: The products of the radii of the excircles on each pair of opposite sides of a circumscribed quadrilateral are equal.

See Figure 1. A circumscribed quadrilateral (also called a tangential quadrilateral) is one that possesses an inscribed circle. Now the diagram contains four lines (the sides of the quadrilateral) and one circle S (the inscribed circle) that touches all four of them; this we call the base circle of the theorem. The other four circles each touch just three of the lines. For the moment, assume no two of these lines are parallel, and also assume that no circle apart from S touches all four lines; the exceptional cases will be discussed in Section 4. So any three of the lines are sides of a triangle.

Some forty years ago my wife Christine and I considered the problems in this article, which involves a fair amount of computation. Computing facilities were not good then, so we considered instead the problems in [1] in which we showed, without using computers, that there were 64703 ways to make up £1 using coins; this was before the introduction of the 20p and £1 coins, and the ½p coin was in circulation. If Christine were still with us, this would have been another piece of joint work. I therefore dedicate this article to her memory.

The design of a coinage system depends on considerations we give to various criteria: for example, the number of denominations for the coins, the maximum number of coins required to deliver any given amount in a range, or the required number of coins averaged over the range; see also §3.

The quadratic equation is a central topic in high school algebra. It provides the simplest generalisation of the familiar linear equation, and finding its roots introduces students to a non-trivial problem that requires the application of new techniques, such as completing the square and/or factorisation into linear factors involving the roots. It also introduces the student to the phenomenon of repeated roots, which opens the door to a discussion of multiplicities of roots. Furthermore, it naturally exposes the student to the case where the equation has no real roots, a phenomenon that could also be used to introduce the student to complex numbers.

Calculating Fisher's F-ratio is a key step in a number of statistical procedures involving null hypothesis significance testing. This is particularly so in the case of ANOVA (analysis of variance) in its several forms, but even multiple regression includes a test of significance of the overall model which employs an F-ratio. The present paper aims at making the basic ideas behind this common statistic more comprehensible by providing a visual counterpart to, and justification for, its algebraic definition.

As an example of how the definition works, consider the following very simple set of data comprising an independent variable consisting of three groups, where the values of the dependent variable are 1, 2, 3 for the first group, 4, 5, 6 for the second group and 7, 8, 9 for the third group. The groups could represent three drug treatments, and the numbers, a measure of clinical outcome for each of nine participants. One might represent this set of data as a row vector thus: (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9).

In a recent and illuminating article that provided much food for thought [1], the problem of tethering a goat at the edge of a circular pasture so as to restrict its attentions to only one half of the grazing supply was elegantly addressed and developed further to embrace the corresponding three-dimensional scenario involving a bird. The exercises resulted in mathematical formulations that required the use of numerical methods to extract practical results. Following the article, various questions and different scenarios sprang to my mind. The following poser perhaps best illustrates one of these, and it is the purpose of this Article to address this particular conundrum:

It used to be the case in some jurisdictions that a rhythmic knell of the Angelus bell would mark the onset of dawn, noon and the passing of a day at dusk. Between these times there is daylight whose duration varies from place to place and from day to day and which can be predicted either exactly or approximately. An illuminating problem concerning the number of daylight hours at a winter solstice in London was posed recently and answered in the Problem Corner of The Mathematical Gazette [1]. It was shown, for example, that a calculation of daylight hours rested strictly upon the numerical solution to a transcendental trigonometric equation. Related references to earlier works in the Gazette involving a point source Sun were also given.

The purpose of this note is multifold. First, it is to point out that the above-cited equation might be viewed also as a “Sun-ray-to-Earth tangency condition”. Such a condition was developed earlier by the author in a publication that is now defunct [2], and so for completeness the steps necessary to establish the condition will be produced again here. Second, it will be evident from the manner of its derivation that the governing equation is valid at all orbit points, not just at a given solstice.
